To make room for Steam games safely, move installed games to another drive through Steam > Settings > Storage, or uninstall only after checking that game’s save coverage and preserving any local saves you need. Moving a game changes where its installation files live; it does not delete the installation. Steam Cloud is not a universal save backup: each game’s developer chooses which files sync, and some games or save files may not be covered.

First, decide whether you need to move a game or remove it

Steam games can take up space in two different ways: their installed files occupy storage, and their save files preserve your progress. These are not necessarily stored together. The safest space-saving choice depends on whether you have another suitable drive, whether you still want the game installed, and whether the saves you care about are protected separately.

Option What happens to the installation What happens to the current drive Save-data consideration
Move an installed game in Steam Storage Steam moves the installation folder to another library; the game is not uninstalled. Frees space on the source drive, but the files still occupy space on the destination drive. Moving the installation is different from backing up saves. Check the game’s Cloud coverage and save location before handling save files separately.
Uninstall one game The installed game files are removed. Frees the space those files used on that drive. Check Cloud status and preserve local saves first if the game’s coverage is uncertain.
Add another internal drive Creates room for a new library or games moved from another library. Provides additional storage; moving games can relieve a full drive. Adding a drive does not itself create a separate save backup.
Use Steam Backup Creates a backup of eligible game files for restoration. Uses storage at the backup destination; it is not a method for relocating an active installation by itself. Do not assume it contains saved games or other user data.

If you have a second drive with enough available space and want to keep playing the game, move its installation first. If you do not need the game installed, uninstalling it may be the more direct way to reclaim space. In either case, treat saves as their own files to protect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The key difference is what each action does to the installed game, not whether it creates a save backup. Moving keeps the installation available on a different library; uninstalling removes the installed files; adding storage gives you another place to keep them. None of those actions guarantees that local saves are protected. Steam Backup has a separate purpose, and its eligibility and exclusions mean it should not be your only save-preservation step.

Move a game to another Steam library

Steam’s Storage settings can add another library location and move selected installed games there without uninstalling them. The destination library must exist before you move a game. The exact layout or wording may vary with the Steam client version, but the supported workflow is through the Storage settings.

  1. Check the drives. Open the Steam client and go to Settings > Storage. Review the listed drives and library folders, including how much room is available on the destination.
  2. Add a library location if needed. In Storage, use the control to add a library location on the drive where you want the game. Complete Steam’s prompts and confirm that the new location appears in the Storage view before moving anything.
  3. Select the source drive. In Storage, choose the drive that currently contains the game. Find and select the game or games you want to relocate.
  4. Choose Move. Use Steam’s Move action and select the destination library you created or chose. Confirm the move in the client.
  5. Wait for Steam to finish. Keep Steam open while it moves the installation. When the move completes, check that the game appears under the destination drive in Storage and launches from the Library.

Steam’s default Windows installation location for game files is C:Program Files (x86)Steamsteamappscommon. Users can create an alternate library on another drive. The default path is not a universal save location, and changing a game’s library does not establish where that game stores progress.

What moving a game does—and does not do

A move shifts the game’s installation folder from one Steam library to another. It does not reduce the game’s total installed size, and it is not a save-file export or backup. It is useful when one drive is nearly full and another has room, because it frees capacity on the source drive while retaining the installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Moving a game through Steam is preferable to manually dragging its folders: the client provides the library-aware move workflow. Do not delete the old installation folder yourself as a substitute for completing the move. Check the Storage view and launch the game before removing any files manually.

Think of the destination as a requirement, not an optional extra step: Steam needs a library location on a drive with room before it can move a game there. If no suitable location exists, add one in Storage first. Moving several selected installations can shift space use across drives, but it does not make those files disappear or shrink their total size. If your goal is to reduce the total storage used across all drives, moving alone will not do that; uninstalling games you no longer need is the action that removes their installed files.

Check Steam Cloud before deleting or changing files

Steam Cloud support and coverage are game-specific. Developers choose which files a game synchronizes, so a game marked as supporting Cloud does not necessarily sync every save-related file, configuration, or piece of custom content. Check both the game’s store page for Cloud support and its individual setting in your Library before relying on synchronization.

  1. In your Steam Library, open the game’s Properties.
  2. Find the game’s Cloud synchronization option and check whether it is enabled.
  3. Check the game’s store page for its Steam Cloud support indicator.
  4. Also verify that Steam Cloud is enabled in the Steam client’s Settings if you expect the client to synchronize Cloud files.

These checks establish whether the game is configured to use Cloud; they do not prove that every file you care about is included. If Cloud is disabled for a game, progress that would otherwise be saved through Cloud remains local to that machine. If the game’s coverage is unclear, preserve a separate copy of its saves before uninstalling, deleting folders, or changing files.

Cloud is useful when the game supports it and its relevant files are included, but do not treat the Cloud label as proof that every kind of user data is covered. Developers decide which files are uploaded. That is why checking the title’s settings and store listing is only part of the safety check: for any progress you cannot afford to lose, confirm the game’s save location and keep a separate copy when coverage is uncertain.

Handle a synchronization conflict carefully

If Steam presents a conflict between local and Cloud files, do not choose a version automatically. Compare the dates shown for the available files and consider which one matches your most recent progress. Selecting an older version can replace newer progress. Steam notes that its ability to recover lost Cloud data is limited, so Cloud should not be treated as a guaranteed recovery service.

Do not resolve a conflict based only on which option is labelled local or Cloud. The dates and your recent play history are the useful clues: choose the copy that corresponds to the progress you want to keep. If neither version is clearly the right one, pause rather than choosing at random and consult the game’s official support information. A sync prompt is a decision about which files to keep, not a substitute for having a separate backup.

Find and copy local saves when needed

Save locations vary by game and developer. On Windows, Steam says many third-party games that do not use Steam Cloud may store saves in C:Users[username]DocumentsMy Games. This is a starting point, not a universal location. A game may store data elsewhere, and the Steam installation directory or its steamappscommon folder is not a reliable substitute for checking the game’s own save location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Check Cloud coverage first. Review the game’s store page and its Library Properties as described above.
  2. Look for the game’s save-location guidance. Check the game’s official support information or contact its publisher if the location is not clear.
  3. Copy, do not move, the saves initially. Copy the relevant save folder to a separate safe location, such as another drive or a backup location that will not be removed with the game. Keeping the original in place until you have verified the copy lowers the risk of losing it.
  4. Verify the copy. Open the copied folder and confirm it contains files and folders for the game. Do not assume a folder with a familiar name is complete without checking the game’s instructions.
  5. Only then take the space-saving action. Move or uninstall the game after you have checked that the save copy is separate from the files you plan to remove.

Steam Cloud data is locally stored under userdata by default, with different paths on Windows, macOS, and Linux. That location is not a universal home for all game saves: it concerns Cloud data and does not mean every game’s complete local save files are there. Do not delete a userdata folder to free space unless you know exactly what it contains and have preserved the data you need.

There is no single save path to check for every Steam game. The Windows Documents\My Games location is only a common possibility for third-party games that are not using Steam Cloud; it is not a requirement that developers follow. If a title’s support information points to a different location, use that guidance rather than searching only the Steam game-installation folder. This matters especially before uninstalling, because a save can be outside the game’s installation and still be important to preserve.

Keep the copy separate from the files you plan to remove. A copy placed inside the game’s installation folder would not be a reliable safeguard if you later remove that folder. Once the copy is in a separate location, leave the original untouched until you have completed the move or uninstall and are confident the progress you need remains available. This is a cautious workflow, not a claim that every game’s files can be restored in the same way.

Do not mistake Steam Backup for a save backup

Steam’s Backup feature is for eligible game files. It works only for games that completely download, install, and patch through Steam. It should not be treated as a guaranteed backup of progress, custom content, or configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Steam specifically warns that backups for Valve-created games do not include saved games, custom multiplayer maps, or configuration files. For third-party games, save locations vary; the files may need to be copied back to their corresponding folders after a game is restored. If your goal is to protect progress, identify and copy the relevant save files separately rather than relying on a game-files backup alone.

That distinction also affects what a backup can do for disk space. A backup is another copy of eligible game files, so it needs room at its destination; it is not the same as moving the active installation to a different library. Use Backup when you need a restorable copy of eligible game files, but do not count it as proof that your progress, custom multiplayer maps, or configuration files have been saved. Those items need separate attention according to the game and the location where they are stored.

For a third-party game, the relevant save files may need to be returned to their corresponding folders after restoring the game. Because those folders vary, make a note of the game’s actual save location and keep a separate copy of the save data. A game-files backup can still be useful for its intended purpose, but it does not remove the need to verify user data independently.

Uninstall a game only after protecting its saves

Uninstalling a game removes its installed files and is a straightforward option when you no longer need it on the current drive. Before uninstalling, verify that the specific game’s save data is covered by Cloud or copy local saves separately if coverage is missing or uncertain. Do not assume that an uninstall will preserve every local file, or that every save is in the same folder as the game.

  1. Check the game’s Cloud support and individual Cloud setting.
  2. Identify where the game stores local saves using its official support information if necessary.
  3. Copy saves to a separate safe location when Cloud does not cover them or you cannot confirm the coverage.
  4. Uninstall the game through the Steam client when you are satisfied that the save files you need are protected.

Choose the title you actually intend to remove and distinguish its uninstall from uninstalling Steam itself. Uninstalling one game is a way to reclaim space used by that game’s installation. It is not a reason to delete the entire Steam directory or assume other installed games and Steam data will be handled safely. If you may want the game again, check that your saves are protected first, then reinstall it later as needed.

Do not uninstall Steam just to remove games

Steam warns that uninstalling Steam removes installed game content. If you are reinstalling Steam and want to retain game installations, Steam instructs users to move the steamapps folder outside the Steam directory before uninstalling. This is a different operation from uninstalling an individual game; do not remove Steam itself as a routine disk-cleanup step.

The steamapps instruction applies to retaining game installations during a Steam reinstall; it is not a save-backup instruction. Your save files may be outside that folder, and their locations still depend on the game. Keep the two concerns separate: preserve steamapps if you need to retain installations during a Steam reinstall, and separately check Cloud and local save locations to protect progress.

Choose a storage drive that fits your setup

An additional drive is optional. Steam allows another library location on a different drive, so you can use an existing drive with enough room instead of buying new storage. If all current drives are full, an internal SSD or other internal drive can host another library. You can then move selected installations into that library using Storage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Steam does not recommend installing Steam to an external hard drive because of possible performance problems. External drives can also disconnect, which can lead to recognition or performance issues. If an external-drive setup causes those problems, Steam’s support guidance recommends an internal drive. Avoid treating external storage as a risk-free permanent destination for games you need available.

There is no mandatory purchase for the Storage workflow: if you already have another suitable drive, you can add a library there. Buying an internal drive is an option only when the drives you have do not provide enough room. A new drive adds capacity, but it does not automatically move existing installations or create a separate save backup; use Steam Storage for the game move and separately preserve saves when needed.

When comparing the options, ask whether you need to keep the game installed and whether the destination drive has room. Moving is appropriate when you want to keep the game and free space on its current drive. Uninstalling is more direct if you no longer need the installation. An extra drive is only necessary if you have nowhere suitable to move games you want to retain. External storage may be convenient, but Steam warns about possible performance problems, and disconnections can affect recognition or performance.

If free space keeps shrinking, look beyond the installation

Steam identifies automatic patches, saved-game file creation, and custom-content downloads as possible reasons available disk space can decrease after a game has been run. If a drive seems to lose space even when you have not installed another game, check whether updates or content downloads are being applied and whether the game itself is creating additional files. The amount and location can vary by game; no universal amount of space is established.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Steam applies a patch: updates can change the files needed by the game and consume storage.
  • The game creates save files: progress-related files can grow or accumulate locally, depending on the game.
  • Custom content downloads: additional content can use space beyond the base installation.

Before deleting unfamiliar folders to reclaim space, confirm what they belong to. In particular, do not remove save folders or Cloud-related data merely because their names look temporary or because they are outside the main game installation directory.

These causes are not interchangeable: an update may affect installed game files, while saves and custom content can be separate user data. If space use changes after playing, first identify whether Steam applied an update or whether the game downloaded or created files. Do not assume that deleting the game’s save data is a safe cleanup method, and do not remove Cloud-related folders simply because they appear separate from the installation. The right next step depends on what the files are and whether the game needs them.

A safe decision checklist

  • Want to keep playing and have another drive with room? Add or select a Steam library in Settings > Storage, then move the game with Steam’s Move action.
  • Do not need the game installed? Check its Cloud coverage and save location, copy local saves if needed, then uninstall that game.
  • Unsure whether a save is protected? Assume it may be local until you confirm the title’s Cloud coverage and locate the relevant save files.
  • Planning to reinstall Steam? Do not treat Steam’s uninstall as an individual-game cleanup. If you need to retain installations, move steamapps outside the Steam directory first, as Steam instructs.
  • Considering an external drive? Account for possible performance and connection problems; Steam recommends an internal drive if those issues occur.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will moving a Steam game to another library delete my saves?

Steam’s Storage workflow moves the game’s installation folder without uninstalling the game. Save data is a separate concern: check the individual game’s Cloud coverage and save location, and copy local saves separately if you are unsure what is protected.

Does Steam Cloud save every game and every save file?

No. Cloud support is game-specific, and developers choose which files synchronize. Check the game’s store page and its Library Properties Cloud option, as well as Steam’s client Cloud setting. Even when Cloud is enabled, do not assume every save-related file is included.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where are Steam game saves stored on Windows?

There is no universal location. Steam says many third-party games without Steam Cloud may store saves in C:Users[username]DocumentsMy Games, but developers choose save locations. Check the game’s official support information if you cannot identify its folder.

Does Steam Backup include my saved games?

Do not rely on it as a save backup. Steam Backup is for eligible game files and works only for games that completely download, install, and patch through Steam. Steam warns that Valve-game backups exclude saved games, custom multiplayer maps, and configuration files; third-party save locations vary.

Can I put a Steam library on an external drive?

Steam allows another library location, but it does not recommend installing Steam to an external hard drive because of possible performance problems. External drives can disconnect and cause recognition or performance issues. Steam recommends an internal drive if those problems occur.

Do I need to buy another drive to free up Steam space?

No. If you already have another suitable drive with room, add a Steam library there and move selected games through Settings > Storage. Buying an internal drive is optional when your existing drives do not provide enough space.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

To keep a game installed while freeing space on its current drive, add or select another library in Steam > Settings > Storage and move the game with Steam’s Move action. To remove an installation, check that game’s Steam Cloud coverage and save location first, then copy local saves separately when needed. Steam Cloud and Steam Backup are not guaranteed backups of every save.
