First check the free space on the drive where the game will be installed, then use Windows’ storage tools to identify safe cleanup options. Check the game’s current storage requirement and the installer’s estimate too: there is no universal game size or free-space buffer that applies to every title.

Check the correct drive and the game’s space requirement

A PC can have plenty of free space overall and still lack room on the specific drive selected for a game. In File Explorer, select This PC and look under Devices and drives for the available space on the intended destination. If the installer lets you choose a drive, check that drive rather than assuming Windows will install the game to the one with the most room.

Next, look up the game’s current storage requirement and pay attention to the installer’s own space estimate. Requirements can be specific to a particular game or version, so a size quoted for another title is not a reliable guide. The Windows and Steam support guidance linked here does not establish a standard amount of extra free space to reserve; use the figures shown for your game and installation.

Microsoft recommends checking whether each action freed enough space before moving on to another one. That prevents unnecessary deletion: if the installer now has enough room, there is no need to keep cleaning.

See what is using space in Windows

Windows’ Storage view gives you a starting point before you decide what to remove. On Windows 10 or Windows 11, open Settings > System > Storage. The page groups storage into categories such as installed apps, temporary files, and system and reserved space. The exact labels and layout can vary between Windows versions or updates.

Select the drive you are trying to clear if Windows presents a drive list. Review the categories to locate likely targets, rather than treating all used space as disposable. In particular, System & reserved includes space Windows uses; do not try to reclaim it by manually deleting system folders.

Windows may also show Cleanup recommendations. These can identify temporary files, previous Windows installations, large or unused files, cloud-synced files, and unused apps. The page can estimate how much selected items might free, but that estimate is specific to your PC and selections—not a general promise of how much cleanup will recover.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review each selection before running a cleanup. A recommendation can include material you still want, such as a large personal file or an app you use. Open the relevant category, inspect the listed items, and leave anything you are unsure about unchecked. Microsoft’s Storage settings in Windows guide explains the available storage categories and recommendations.

Choose cleanup options based on what they remove

Different Windows cleanup tools affect different kinds of files. The key question is not simply how much space an option might free, but whether it removes something you need, makes a cloud file available only online, or leaves personal files untouched.

Option What it can do What to check first
Cleanup recommendations Surfaces selected temporary files, previous Windows installations, large or unused files, cloud-synced files, and unused apps; Windows may show an estimated amount to recover. Inspect the items and estimate on your own PC. Do not assume every suggested file or app is unwanted.
Storage Sense Can clean selected temporary files and Recycle Bin contents, automatically or when run, depending on your settings. Its defaults do not clean Downloads or cloud content, and Storage Sense works on the system drive. Review its configuration before enabling or running it.
Disk Cleanup Lets you select temporary and system files for removal. Review the categories before confirming, especially when removing system-related cleanup items.
Deleting or moving personal files Can free space by removing unneeded files or moving wanted files to separate storage. Confirm the file is no longer needed or that the destination copy is complete. Empty the Recycle Bin if you want deleted files to release space.

Use Storage Sense carefully

Storage Sense can remove selected temporary files and items in the Recycle Bin. You can review its settings from Settings > System > Storage; available controls can vary with the Windows version. Do not assume its default settings include Downloads: Microsoft says Storage Sense does not manage Downloads or cloud content unless you configure it to do so. It works on the system drive, so it may not clean the separate drive that will receive your game.

Cloud files need special care. Microsoft says files made online-only in OneDrive are not permanently deleted and may be made local again when there is space and a network connection. That can reduce local disk use, but it is different from deleting a file, and an online-only file may need to download before you can use it offline. Check the Storage Sense settings and the file’s status before relying on cloud cleanup to make room.

For the controls and behaviors documented for Windows 10 and Windows 11, see Microsoft’s Manage drive space with Storage Sense guide.

Use Disk Cleanup for files you have reviewed

Disk Cleanup can remove selected temporary and system files. Search Windows for Disk Cleanup, open the utility, choose the drive to clean if prompted, and review the categories it offers. Select only items you are comfortable removing, then confirm. As with other cleanup tools, the amount recovered depends on what is present on your PC; there is no fixed recovery amount.

If Windows offers an option to remove a previous Windows installation, pause before selecting it. That is a rollback choice, not routine temporary-file cleanup.

Decide whether to delete, move, or keep large personal files

Microsoft notes that folders such as Videos, Music, Pictures, and Downloads often contain large personal files. In File Explorer, open those folders and sort by size to spot large items. The exact sorting controls depend on the folder view, but you can use the column headings or view options to arrange files by size.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Delete a file only if you no longer need it or can replace it. Deleting usually sends it to the Recycle Bin first, so empty the bin when you are sure you do not need to restore anything and want the space released.
  • Move a file if you want to keep it but do not need it on the PC’s internal drive. Microsoft identifies a connected USB drive, SD card, or other external storage as possible destinations for infrequently used files. Confirm the file is present on the destination before removing any original copy.
  • Leave it in place if you are unsure what it is, whether an app depends on it, or whether it is backed up. A smaller cleanup is safer than deleting files just to reach an arbitrary target.

A move to external storage can solve a shortage for personal files without changing where the game runs. That distinction matters: external storage may be useful for keeping media or archives, while a launcher may have separate requirements and performance considerations for running an installed game.

Seagate Portable 1TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0 for PC, Mac, PlayStation, & Xbox, 1-Year Rescue Service (STGX1000400) , Black
  • Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

Before moving a large group of files, compare the likely benefit with the inconvenience: Windows’ estimate can help you prioritize cleanup recommendations, while sorting personal folders by size can reveal individual files worth moving. Prefer items you can identify and replace or access elsewhere. If you copy files to a USB drive, SD card, or other external storage, check that the copies open from the new location before deleting the originals. A move is only a space-saving step on the original drive once the original copy is gone; until then, it may not reduce that drive’s used space.

Uninstall apps only when you no longer want them

Installed apps can account for a significant share of a drive, and Windows’ Storage categories or Cleanup recommendations may help identify large or unused ones. Before uninstalling, confirm that you do not need the app, its local projects, or its settings. If it is a game, check whether its saved progress is synchronized or backed up before removing it; save behavior varies by game.

Use Windows’ installed-app controls rather than deleting an application’s folder by hand. Removing a folder manually can leave an app partially installed or remove data you did not intend to lose. After uninstalling, check the destination drive’s available space again in File Explorer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep or remove the previous Windows installation deliberately

Windows may offer to delete files from a previous installation, commonly stored in Windows.old. Removing them can recover space, but those files are what allow you to return to the previous Windows version. Microsoft warns that once they are deleted, the action cannot be undone and you cannot use those files to restore the prior version.

Only choose this cleanup if you have decided you do not need the rollback option. If you are uncertain, keep the files and try less consequential steps first, such as reviewing temporary files or moving personal media.

Install or move the game to another drive when the launcher supports it

If cleaning the destination drive is not the best option, the game may be installable on another drive. An internal drive with adequate space can be a practical additional game location if your PC supports one. Windows’ Storage page accounts for other drives, and Steam supports additional library locations; neither fact establishes which drive types or capacities are compatible with every PC.

Think about the destination as well as the amount of free space. An internal drive can provide another location for a library when the computer supports it. External storage is useful for moving infrequently used personal files, but it is not automatically the right place to run a game or launcher. Whether a launcher can install or move a game to a particular drive depends on that launcher’s own controls.

For Steam: add a library location and move a game

  1. Open Steam and go to Settings > Storage.
  2. Choose an available drive and create an additional library location there.
  3. In Storage, select an installed game and use the Move option to move it to the new library location.
  4. Wait for the move to finish, then verify that Steam recognizes the game and that the destination drive has the expected free space.

These steps are for Steam only; other launchers have their own controls and may not support moving an installed game. Steam’s support page, Moving a Steam Installation and Games, documents moving Steam installations and games.

Steam cautions against installing Steam on an external hard drive because of potential performance issues. That warning concerns running Steam from that external drive; it does not negate Microsoft’s suggestion to use external storage to move personal files you want to keep but use infrequently.

Check save files before moving a full Steam installation

Game saves are not all handled the same way. Steam says many third-party saves not covered by Steam Cloud may be in Documents\My Games, but each game’s developer determines its save location. Verify the location and backup or confirm synchronization for the specific game before moving a full Steam installation. Do not assume every save is in that folder or protected by Steam Cloud.

If Steam later shows games as uninstalled after a move or library change, do not immediately download them again or delete their files. Steam’s Installed games are appearing as uninstalled support page covers that specific situation.

If space is still low, troubleshoot instead of deleting system folders

After cleanup, recheck the destination drive and compare its available space with the game’s current requirement and installer estimate. If Windows’ temporary-file area quickly grows again, Microsoft documents a case in which the Temp folder may refill with Microsoft Store app package files after cleanup. Its guidance is to reset the Store, clear its cache with wsreset.exe, run the relevant troubleshooters, and restart.

Use that sequence for the described Store-related symptom rather than as a general cleanup ritual. Do not manually delete arbitrary Windows or game folders to force space back: a folder may contain data Windows, an app, or a game needs, and removing it can cause further problems.

A safe order of operations

  1. Check free space on the exact drive selected for the game, then check the game’s current storage requirement and installer estimate.
  2. Review Settings > System > Storage and the Cleanup recommendations for your PC. Inspect selections and their displayed estimate.
  3. Use Storage Sense or Disk Cleanup for items you understand and are comfortable removing. Account for Storage Sense’s system-drive scope and its default treatment of Downloads and cloud content.
  4. Sort personal folders such as Videos, Music, Pictures, and Downloads by size. Delete only unwanted files, or move wanted but infrequently used files to separate storage.
  5. Uninstall apps you no longer want. Consider previous Windows installation files only if you are willing to give up the rollback option.
  6. If the launcher supports it, create or choose another library location and install or move the game there. For Steam, verify saves before moving a full installation.
  7. Recheck the destination drive before attempting the install. If space keeps disappearing or cleanup does not behave as expected, use the relevant Windows troubleshooting guidance instead of deleting system folders manually.

Microsoft’s Free up drive space in Windows guide covers Windows 10 and Windows 11 cleanup options, including personal files and external storage.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much free space should I leave before installing a PC game?

There is no universal free-space buffer established for every game. Check the game’s current storage requirement and the installer’s estimate, then compare them with the free space on the exact destination drive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will Storage Sense delete files from Downloads?

Not by default. Microsoft says Storage Sense does not manage Downloads or cloud content unless you configure it to do so. Review its settings before enabling or running cleanup.

Can I use an external drive to free up space?

Yes. You can move wanted but infrequently used personal files to a connected USB drive, SD card, or other external storage, and verify the copies before deleting originals. Steam cautions against installing Steam on an external hard drive because of potential performance issues.

Will deleting files immediately free up disk space?

Files sent to the Recycle Bin may still occupy space. Empty the bin only after you are sure you do not need to restore those files.

Can I move a Steam game to another drive without losing saves?

Steam supports additional library locations and moving selected installed games through Settings > Storage. Save locations and cloud coverage vary by game, so verify the specific game’s save location and back up or confirm synchronization before moving a full Steam installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if Windows cleanup frees space but the Temp folder fills again?

Microsoft documents a case involving Microsoft Store app package files that can refill Temp after cleanup. For that specific symptom, its guidance is to reset the Store, clear its cache with wsreset.exe, run the relevant troubleshooters, and restart. Avoid deleting arbitrary Windows folders.

The Bottom Line

Check the game’s requirement and the free space on its actual destination drive first. Then use Windows Storage, Cleanup recommendations, Storage Sense, or Disk Cleanup carefully; move or delete only personal files you understand, and treat rollback files and game saves as decisions that may be hard to reverse. If another drive is an option, follow the launcher’s instructions—Steam supports library moves but warns against running Steam from an external hard drive.
