Check free space on the drive where you plan to install the game, then make room there—not automatically on your Windows system drive. In Steam, open Settings > Storage to see your library drives and installed games. You can move a game to another Steam library, uninstall one you no longer want, use Windows cleanup tools, or move personal files off the destination drive. Check available space again before starting the install.

The safest approach is to work in stages: identify the destination, choose the least risky way to make room, review every deletion, and then verify the result. There is no universal amount of space that cleanup tools will recover, and the exact temporary space a particular game may need is not established by its listed size alone. Use the game’s current store requirements and Steam’s available-space report as your guide.

Start by checking the right drive

A Steam game does not have to be installed on the same drive as Windows. If your PC has multiple drives or Steam libraries, clearing space on C: will not help if the game is set to install somewhere else. The important number is the available space on the drive that will hold the new game’s library folder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open File Explorer, select This PC, and note the available space on the drive you intend to use.
  2. Open Steam and go to Settings > Storage. Review the listed library drives and installed games, and identify the library you plan to use for the new game.
  3. Check the game’s current store page for its stated system requirements, including storage. The available guidance does not establish a universal extra-space allowance for installation or updates, so do not assume that the listed game size is a precise guarantee of the free space Steam will require.

If Steam reports that there is not enough disk space, verify the selected library and its drive first. The warning may be about the destination drive even when another drive on the PC has plenty of room. Likewise, a drive with enough free space for personal files is not automatically the drive Steam is using for this install. Confirm the destination in Steam rather than guessing from the Windows drive letter or from where another game is installed.

It helps to write down or remember the free-space figure before you begin. After each move, uninstall, or cleanup step, check it again. That makes it easier to tell whether your actions affected the correct drive and whether you have made enough room, without assuming that a particular category of files will free a predictable amount.

Choose a way to make room

There is no single best cleanup method for every PC. Start with an option that retains data when possible, and use deletion only for files or installations you have decided you no longer need. The table compares the main choices by effort, what they keep, and the risks to consider.

Option What it can do What to consider
Move an installed Steam game Retain the game installation while freeing space on its current library drive, if another library has room. Requires another suitable Steam library on the same computer. Check the game’s save arrangements before moving or changing files.
Uninstall an unwanted game Remove that game’s installed content from its library drive. Only do this if you no longer need the installation, and check whether important saves are stored separately.
Use Windows cleanup tools Remove selected temporary or other unneeded files. Review what Windows has selected before deleting anything; the amount recovered depends on your PC and choices.
Move or delete personal files Free space by moving wanted files elsewhere or deleting files you no longer need. Choose files deliberately. Deleted files may remain in the Recycle Bin until it is emptied.
Add an internal SSD Provide more capacity for future installations if existing drives are not enough. Check your PC’s supported capacity, interface, and form factor before buying or installing a drive.

If you already have another Steam library with capacity, moving a game or installing the new title there may be the quickest way to avoid deleting anything. If you want to retain a personal file, moving it is safer than deleting it, provided the other location has room. Windows cleanup and uninstalling games can recover space from the target drive, but those actions remove selected files or installed content. Buying storage is a longer-term option that adds cost and requires compatibility checks; it is not the first step if a suitable library is already available.

Move a Steam game to another library

If another library drive already has room, moving an installed game can preserve its installation instead of making you download it again. Steam’s Storage settings show the available libraries and provide a way to move an existing game’s installation folder to another location on the same computer. The practical benefit is that the original library drive gets space back while the game remains installed on the PC.

  1. In Steam, open Settings > Storage.
  2. Review the listed library drives and confirm that the destination library is on a drive with enough available space for the game.
  3. Select the installed game you want to relocate and use Steam’s move option to choose the other library.
  4. After the move completes, check the destination drive’s available space and confirm the game appears in the intended library before beginning the new installation.

If you do not yet have another Steam library on the drive you want to use, Steam’s Storage tab lets you create an alternate library location. Then select that library as the destination when moving an existing game or installing a new one. When installing the large game, choose the library that has room rather than assuming Steam will use the drive you prefer.

Moving is useful when you still want the game and want to avoid removing its installation. It does not create more total storage across the computer; it redistributes the installation between drives. Make sure the destination has enough available space before beginning the move, and do not interrupt the process by manually dragging the game’s folders in File Explorer. Steam documents moving the game through its client, so use the Steam option to keep the library location organized.

Moving an installation is separate from managing saves. Game developers choose where and how saves are stored, so do not treat a move as a guarantee that every local setting or save is handled identically for every game. If a game has important local data, check its specific save arrangements before altering files.

Uninstall games carefully

Uninstall a game through the Steam client if you are sure you no longer need its installed files. This is a straightforward way to free space occupied by a game, but it is a destructive choice for the installation: you will no longer have that installed game content in its library. Before doing so, check whether you want to keep its saves, settings, screenshots, or other local data. Steam Cloud availability and save handling vary by game; a developer decides how and where a game’s saves are stored.

For some third-party games that do not save through Steam Cloud, Steam says saves or profiles may be in DocumentsMy Games. That is not a universal location, so check the particular game’s information before deleting files or assuming a save will be restored automatically. If you cannot confirm where a save is kept, pause before removing related files. In particular, do not manually delete a folder simply because it appears connected to a game unless you have confirmed what it contains and that you no longer need it.

Uninstalling a game is different from uninstalling Steam itself. Do not uninstall the Steam client as a shortcut for reclaiming space. Steam warns that uninstalling Steam removes Steam and installed game content. If you are reinstalling Steam and want to preserve game installations, Steam advises moving the steamapps folder outside the Steam directory first. This is a separate preservation step from uninstalling an individual game, and it is relevant when the goal is to reinstall the client rather than simply make room for one new game.

If you are deciding between moving and uninstalling, ask whether you still expect to play the older game. If yes and another library has space, a move retains the installation. If no, uninstalling through Steam can clear that game’s installed content, after you consider saves and other local data. Neither option should be treated as a substitute for checking the destination drive afterward.

Use Windows cleanup tools, but review the selections

Windows 10 and Windows 11 include tools for finding and removing files that may no longer be needed. The available choices differ by Windows version. Windows 11 Cleanup recommendations can list temporary files, large or unused files, cloud-synced files, and unused apps. Review the items in each category before approving removal rather than treating a category label as permission to delete everything in it.

  • Micron 3D NAND – advancing the world's memory and storage technology for 40 years
  • Crucial 3-year limited warranty
  • Windows 11: Check Cleanup recommendations and inspect the suggested categories and selected items before deleting. Categories can include temporary files, large or unused files, cloud-synced files, and unused apps. A cloud-synced file or a large personal file may still be something you want, so make the decision item by item.
  • Windows 10 and Windows 11: Windows documents Storage Sense as a way to manage storage and free space. Review what it will remove and its settings before relying on it. Treat its available settings as choices to inspect, not as a promise that a certain amount will be recovered.
  • Windows 10: Microsoft also documents Disk Cleanup as a built-in cleanup option. Review the items it offers before confirming removal.

These tools are useful because they surface potential cleanup choices without requiring you to guess which system files to delete by hand. They are not a reason to approve every suggested item automatically. For each category, consider whether you recognize the file or app, whether you still need it, and whether removing it could affect something you rely on. If the description is unclear or a file looks important, leave it in place and use a different cleanup option.

Be especially cautious with files related to a previous Windows installation. Removing the prior installation can take away the ability to roll back an upgrade. Do not select it simply because it appears to offer a large space saving unless you are comfortable losing that rollback option. The tradeoff is not just space recovered: it is giving up the ability to return to the earlier Windows installation through that rollback path.

After each cleanup, return to This PC in File Explorer and check the available space on the intended Steam library drive. The tools do not guarantee a particular amount of recovered space; results depend on which files are present and which selections you approve. If the number has not changed enough, confirm that the cleanup affected the same drive Steam will use and then consider another reviewed option.

Review large personal files

Look through folders such as Downloads, Videos, Music, and Pictures for files that are taking space on the installation drive. Delete only files you no longer need. If you want to keep a file, move it to another drive or external storage instead. Microsoft recommends deleting or moving personal files as ways to free drive space, and the choice depends on whether the file is expendable or something you want to retain.

Take time to review before selecting files in bulk. A large download may be an installer, archive, recording, or document you still need. A file’s size alone does not tell you whether it is safe to remove. If you are uncertain, keep it or move it to a location with space, then verify that it is available there before removing the original. Avoid deleting files from game save locations or other folders just to make the number look better.

When you delete files, they may continue using space while in the Recycle Bin. Empty it only after checking that you do not need to restore anything from it. Then check the destination drive’s available space again. If you moved files rather than deleting them, confirm the move completed and that the files are still accessible in their new location.

When another drive or an SSD makes sense

If another Steam library already has room, selecting it for the new installation may be simpler than deleting files. Steam’s Storage settings can show existing libraries and let you create an alternate library location. If no existing drive has enough capacity and you regularly run short, adding a compatible internal SSD is a longer-term option. Check your computer manufacturer’s or motherboard’s storage specifications for supported capacity, interface, and form factor; compatibility cannot be determined without the PC’s specific model and configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An internal SSD involves purchase cost and may require checking what the computer supports before you buy or install it. Do not choose a model based only on a general assumption that any SSD fits any PC. The sources do not identify a specific drive or model for your system, so use the PC or motherboard documentation to verify the required interface, physical form factor, and supported capacity. Once installed, Steam can use an alternate library location on the computer for future installations or moved games.

Steam says, “It is not recommended that you install Steam to an external hard drive, due to potential performance issues.” External storage can still be useful for offloading personal files, but Steam’s warning means it should not be treated as a general-purpose substitute for an internal game drive. The warning does not establish that every external drive performs identically, nor does it settle compatibility for every external SSD. Keep the distinction clear: an external drive may be a place to move or store personal files, while Steam does not recommend installing Steam to an external hard drive because of potential performance concerns.

If you are choosing between free cleanup and more storage, try the free, reversible choices first: use an existing library if it has room, move wanted personal files, and review cleanup selections. Consider a compatible internal SSD when the problem is recurring or no current library has suitable capacity. Check the current game requirements and your system’s specifications before deciding; neither the game size nor a generic storage recommendation identifies the exact drive that fits a particular computer.

Confirm space before you install

  1. In Steam, check Settings > Storage and confirm which library will receive the game.
  2. In File Explorer, check the free space on that library’s drive—not only on C:.
  3. Compare the available space with the game’s current store requirements, keeping in mind that the exact temporary space needed for installation or updates is not established here.
  4. If Steam still reports insufficient space, choose another library with adequate capacity or repeat the cleanup process on the actual destination drive, reviewing files before removing them.

If the install still cannot proceed, go back to the destination rather than deleting unrelated files from another drive. Steam’s installation troubleshooting guidance suggests trying another hard drive and adding a Steam library folder. That is a practical next step if another suitable drive is available: create or select the alternate library, then retry the installation there. If no other drive is available, continue with reviewed cleanup on the actual destination or consider whether additional compatible internal capacity is appropriate.

There is no reliable universal figure for how much space you will recover by running Storage Sense, deleting downloads, or uninstalling one game. Your result depends on what is currently stored on the PC and which items you choose. Rechecking after each step keeps the process grounded in the free-space figure Windows reports rather than an estimate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Steam say there is not enough disk space when another drive has room?

Steam may be set to install the game in a library on a different drive. Open Settings > Storage, confirm the selected library, and check free space on that drive in File Explorer. You can select another library with room or create an alternate library location.

How do I move a Steam game to another drive?

In Steam, open Settings > Storage, select the installed game, and use Steam’s move option to choose another library on the same computer. Confirm that the destination drive has enough free space. This keeps the installation on the PC while freeing space on the original library drive.

Will uninstalling a Steam game delete its saves?

Save handling varies by game, and developers choose where and how saves are stored. Steam says saves or profiles for some third-party games that do not use Steam Cloud may be in DocumentsMy Games, but that is not universal. Check the particular game’s save arrangements before uninstalling or deleting related files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I uninstall Steam to free space and keep my games?

Steam warns that uninstalling the Steam client removes Steam and installed game content. If you are reinstalling Steam and want to preserve game installations, Steam advises moving the steamapps folder outside the Steam directory first. For ordinary cleanup, uninstall an individual game through Steam instead, after checking its local save data.

Should I install Steam on an external hard drive?

Steam says it does not recommend installing Steam to an external hard drive because of potential performance issues. External storage can be useful for moving personal files off the destination drive, but it should not be treated as a general-purpose Steam installation recommendation. A compatible internal SSD is an optional longer-term capacity solution.

How much free space does a large Steam game need?

Check the game’s current store requirements and the free space on the Steam library drive you plan to use. The exact temporary space required for a particular installation or update is not established here, so the listed game size is not a precise guarantee of the space Steam will require.

Will Storage Sense or Cleanup recommendations free a set amount of space?

No fixed amount is guaranteed. The result depends on which files are on your PC and which items you approve for removal. Review each category, be cautious with prior Windows installation files because deleting them can remove the upgrade rollback option, then recheck the destination drive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Before deleting anything, confirm the destination in Steam > Settings > Storage and check that drive in File Explorer. Prefer moving a game or wanted personal files when another suitable location is available; uninstall or clean up only after reviewing saves and selected files. Recheck free space before installing, and consider a compatible internal SSD only if your current libraries and careful cleanup are not enough.
