Start inside Call of Duty rather than deleting folders at random. Launch the game, open Menu > Manage Files, and remove only the titles, campaigns, multiplayer packs, Zombies content, Warzone files, or other add-ons you no longer use. Then check the installation prompt for your exact game and platform, because Call of Duty has no universal size and mandatory updates can require additional free space.
If the built-in manager cannot reclaim enough room, remove other unneeded games or backed-up files. A compatible SSD is the fallback for a PC or console that supports expansion; compatibility, installation destination, and whether games can run from the drive must be verified before buying anything.
How much free space do you actually need?
The number shown in an old article or a combined Call of Duty library total is not a reliable target. Required space changes with the title, edition, platform, language packs, installed modes, updates, and whether Call of Duty HQ or another shared component is already present. Use the current store page or installation screen for your own device as the controlling figure.

A published example: Black Ops 6 on PC
Activision’s official Black Ops 6 PC requirements list an SSD with 149 GB available at launch. The same requirement lists 78 GB when COD HQ and Warzone are already installed. Those are title-specific, PC figures with a stated existing-install condition; they are not a promise that every Call of Duty game, console, update, or content selection will fit in either amount.

When a launcher asks for more room than the download itself appears to contain, it may need temporary space to unpack, patch, verify, or replace files. Treat the prompt’s available-space check as authoritative for that transaction and leave practical headroom instead of trying to meet a guessed number.
Identify your exact game, platform and desired content first
Before uninstalling anything, write down three details: the Call of Duty title and edition, the device on which it will run, and the modes you actually intend to play. Pack names and menu choices differ between PC, PlayStation and Xbox, and even between releases that use the shared Call of Duty experience.
Check the current installation screen
- Open the platform’s store, library or launcher page for the specific Call of Duty game.
- Start the installation flow far enough to display the current required space and any selectable components.
- Note whether the screen distinguishes the base game, shared launcher files, campaign, multiplayer, Zombies, Warzone or language and texture packs.
- Cancel or pause the installation while you clean up; return to the same screen afterward to recheck the calculation.
A size shown for a complete bundle is not necessarily the size of a custom installation. Conversely, a small initial download does not guarantee that later updates will fit without more room.

- Campaign: keep it if you are playing the story; remove it when you have finished and do not need local access.
- Multiplayer: retain the multiplayer packs required by the modes you play.
- Zombies or cooperative modes: uninstall them if they are not part of your current rotation.
- Warzone or shared components: check dependencies carefully; a pack used by another installed title may be shared.
- Languages, high-resolution textures and optional packs: select only the languages and visual assets your device and connection justify.
Do not assume that a pack with a familiar name is safe to remove. Read the dependency or warning text in the manager, and make a note of any mode you may want to download again later.
Use Call of Duty’s Manage Files system
Activision’s support instructions describe the in-game file manager as the preferred way to control downloaded content. Its stated purpose is to reduce the overall storage of a Call of Duty library, and Activision recommends it when uninstalling full games or game modes.
Remove an unused title or mode
- Launch Call of Duty and wait for the main menu to load.
- Open Menu.
- Choose Manage Files.
- Select the installed title, mode or content category you want to change.
- Choose Uninstall or the equivalent remove option, review the selection, and confirm.
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not shut down the device while files are being changed.
- Reopen Manage Files and then check the platform’s free-space display.
The exact pack labels can change with the current release. Follow the entries shown on your screen rather than a list copied from another Call of Duty version.

Why the in-game manager is safer than manual deletion
Platform-level storage menus can expose individual files that the game treats as a group, while the in-game manager understands the game’s content relationships. Removing the wrong file at the platform level can leave a partial installation, trigger a repair download, or remove a component another mode needs. Do not delete Call of Duty folders manually and do not use a third-party “cleaner” to guess which files are disposable.

Install only the content you want
If this is a first installation, the most effective cleanup is not downloading unwanted content in the first place. Current Activision guidance directs new installers to select specific content where the installer offers choices. That approach also applies when installing a newer title such as Black Ops 7 through the current Call of Duty experience: inspect the available selections instead of accepting an aggregate launcher package by default.
A selective first-install workflow
- Open the title’s current install prompt on your platform.
- Expand the content or manage-installation section.
- Untick modes, campaigns, language packs or optional texture assets you do not plan to use.
- Record the revised required space shown by the installer.
- Start the installation only after the device reports enough room for the selected set and its expected update process.
Selections can be changed later through Menu > Manage Files. Uninstalling a mode is therefore reversible in the sense that you can download it again, although a later download will consume bandwidth and time.
Leave room for updates and temporary files
Meeting the headline download size is not a guarantee that an update will install. The Xbox listing for Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 explicitly warns: “Additional storage space may be required for mandatory game updates.” It does not specify one buffer that works for every title or platform.
Use a practical verification routine
- After removing content, open the device’s storage view and record the free capacity.
- Return to the game’s current store or launcher prompt and compare that capacity with the required-space figure for your selected content.
- Check for a pending update before starting the install; an update can change the requirement.
- Keep some uncommitted capacity for the update process instead of filling the drive to its last gigabyte.
- If the installer still reports insufficient room, stop and clean up more rather than repeatedly retrying.
Because no universal update buffer is published, avoid advice such as “always leave exactly 20 GB.” The correct margin depends on the title, patch, platform and files already present.

Free space elsewhere without risking personal data
When Manage Files has removed everything you are comfortable losing, look for other large, replaceable items. Work from the platform’s own storage screen so you can see the size and location of each item.
Low-risk candidates
- Games you have not played recently and can reinstall from your library.
- Completed downloads, duplicate installers and local captures that are already backed up.
- Applications you no longer use.
- Offline video, music or map data that can be downloaded again.
- Old update packages or cache entries when the platform labels them as safe to remove.
Items requiring extra care
- Save data that has not been synchronized or copied to a verified backup.
- Photos, recordings and documents stored only on the device.
- Files shared by several games or by the operating system.
- Anything whose purpose is unclear in a generic folder.
Deleting a personal file can reclaim more space than removing a mode, but it is less reversible if no backup exists. Confirm the backup before deletion and empty the recycle bin or equivalent only after you are certain the files are no longer needed.
Should you change streaming settings?
On-Demand High-Quality Streaming is a bandwidth and image-quality control, not a substitute for uninstalling a content pack. Activision describes the Optimized setting as high fidelity with increased internet-bandwidth use. Minimal lowers bandwidth use but also reduces graphical quality.
| Setting | Visual result | Network effect | Local-storage expectation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Optimized | Higher-fidelity streamed assets | Uses more internet bandwidth | No supported claim that it frees a fixed amount of disk space |
| Minimal | Reduced graphical quality | Uses less internet bandwidth | Do not treat it as equivalent to uninstalling a pack |
Choose Minimal when your priority is reducing bandwidth consumption and you accept the visual compromise. Use Manage Files when the goal is to reclaim local storage.
When a storage upgrade makes sense
A larger drive is reasonable only after selective installation and cleanup fail, or when you routinely need several large games installed at once. For Black Ops 6 on PC, the published requirement specifically calls for an SSD. That makes a compatible SSD a legitimate upgrade path for a PC, but it does not establish one universal drive for every computer, PlayStation and Xbox model.
Check compatibility before buying
- Form factor: confirm that the device accepts the physical size of the drive.
- Interface: match the supported connection, such as the internal slot or expansion standard specified by the manufacturer.
- Capacity: calculate space for the game, updates and the other software you intend to keep, not just the current download.
- Install destination: verify that the game can be installed and run from that drive rather than merely stored or moved there.
- Platform rules: console expansion requirements differ by generation; an ordinary external USB drive is not guaranteed to run every current-generation console game.
- Migration process: check how your platform formats, initializes or moves games to the new drive before disconnecting the old one.
For a PC, check the motherboard or system manual for supported SSD slots and the operating system’s available installation locations. For a console, use the manufacturer’s compatibility guidance for internal expansion or an approved expansion card. Do not buy based only on a connector that physically fits.

Why Call of Duty can occupy so much space
A modern Call of Duty installation can combine a shared launcher, several games, high-resolution assets, multiple language resources and separate mode packs. Keeping every campaign, multiplayer component, Zombies pack and Warzone-related file installed creates a larger footprint than selecting one mode. Updates can also need temporary working space while files are replaced.
That is why two players can see different requirements for what appears to be the same franchise: their platforms, editions, existing COD HQ files, selected modes and update states differ. The Black Ops 6 figures of 149 GB and 78 GB illustrate how the existing installation changes the published requirement; they are not a universal Call of Duty answer.

The game still says there is not enough space after uninstalling a mode
- Wait for the uninstall operation to complete instead of relying on the initial progress message.
- Restart the game or platform storage view so the free-space figure refreshes.
- Check whether another title, language pack or high-resolution asset remains selected.
- Reopen the current install prompt; its calculation may include an update or shared component.
- If the prompt still fails, remove a separate large game or backed-up file and check again.
A mode disappeared after cleanup
Open Menu > Manage Files to see whether it is listed as uninstalled. If you need it, select the mode and install it again. Keep in mind that reinstalling consumes bandwidth and may require the same temporary space that caused the original problem.
The platform shows free space, but the installer reports less
Use the installer’s figure for that transaction. The platform may reserve space for updates, temporary files or system functions that are not reflected in a simple file-size total. Close other downloads and avoid starting another large installation while the Call of Duty process is running.
An external drive is detected but the game will not launch from it
Detection only proves that the platform can see the drive. Check whether that device supports running this generation of game, whether it must be formatted by the console, and whether the title must be moved to internal or approved expansion storage before play.

Historical cleanup information you should not rely on today
Activision’s Modern Warfare II setup documentation recorded that older files within the Call of Duty experience were scheduled for automatic removal on August 7, 2025, and that Modern Warfare II moved outside the Call of Duty experience as a standalone title. The page displays a June 30, 2026 update date. This explains why older storage advice can conflict with what a current launcher shows, but it is historical context—not a cleanup action to schedule now.

A repeatable checklist
- Identify the exact title, edition and platform.
- Open the current install prompt and note the required space for the content you selected.
- Launch Call of Duty and use Menu > Manage Files.
- Uninstall unused campaigns, modes and optional packs through that manager.
- For a first install, select only the content you intend to play.
- Refresh the platform’s free-space display and recheck the installer.
- Leave practical capacity for mandatory updates and temporary files.
- Remove other games or personal files only after checking backups and dependencies.
- If you remain short, verify the form factor, interface, platform support and run-from-drive rules for a compatible SSD or console expansion device.
Bottom line
The dependable order is: inspect the current installation prompt, trim Call of Duty content in Menu > Manage Files, install only the modes you want, and verify free capacity again before accounting for updates. Use the published 149 GB/78 GB Black Ops 6 PC figures only in their stated context. If selective cleanup is not enough, expand storage with a device your particular PC or console explicitly supports; no generic external drive or universal Call of Duty size applies to every setup.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I uninstall only the Call of Duty campaign and keep multiplayer?
Usually, the Manage Files screen presents campaigns and modes as separate selectable content, but the exact labels and dependencies vary by title and platform. Select the campaign entry in that screen and read the warning before confirming.
Does setting On-Demand High-Quality Streaming to Minimal free disk space?
It is documented as reducing bandwidth use and graphical quality. Activision does not establish a fixed amount of local storage that Minimal frees, so use the content manager for disk-space cleanup.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIs 149 GB the required size for every Call of Duty installation?
No. That figure is the Black Ops 6 PC launch requirement for an SSD. The same page lists 78 GB when COD HQ and Warzone are already installed, showing why title and existing-install conditions matter.
Can I install a current console Call of Duty game on any USB hard drive?
No universal rule applies. Some external drives can store or move games but may not run a current-generation title. Check your console’s supported expansion type and the game’s run-from-storage requirements.
What should I do if an update asks for more space than the game download?
Follow the current platform prompt, which may reserve temporary working space and additional room for mandatory updates. Remove more content or another large item, then retry after the storage view refreshes.
