You can usually recover Android storage without removing your installed apps by targeting large personal files, offline downloads, backed-up media, temporary cache data, and—on supported phones—archived app software. Start with Settings > Storage to see which category is actually consuming space, then work from the largest safe target. Review every selection before confirming: Files deleted through cleanup tools and app data removed with Clear storage may not be recoverable.
Storage and memory are different
Storage is the phone’s long-term space for photos, videos, downloads, music, documents, app software and app data. Memory (RAM) is working space used while Android and apps run. Force-closing apps may change available memory temporarily, but it does not meaningfully reclaim the internal storage this guide addresses.
Android does not provide a universal “recover X GB” result. The amount depends on your files, cached data, offline media, backups and the cleanup choices you make. The safest approach is to inspect usage first instead of deleting by guesswork.
Prepare before you clean
- Make sure you know which Google account contains your backed-up photos. A signed-in gallery view is not, by itself, proof that every item finished uploading.
- Have a stable internet connection available if you plan to check cloud copies or download an archived app again. Cloud-backed files may not be available offline after local copies are removed.
- If you are transferring files, confirm that the computer or SD card has enough free capacity. Copy irreplaceable files first; do not start with a move command.
- Keep the phone unlocked during a transfer and avoid deleting anything until you have opened files at the destination.
- Take a note of the current free-space figure in Settings. Android can take a little time to recalculate totals after a large deletion.
Choose the safest target before deleting anything
| Target | What happens | Data-loss risk | Compatibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Downloaded files, screenshots and duplicates | You review and delete selected files | High if you delete the wrong copy; review is required | All Android phones, with different menu labels |
| Offline music, video or maps | The downloaded copy is removed; online access may remain | Low to medium if you can download again; high if the content is no longer available | Depends on the app that created the download |
| Files by Google cleanup suggestions | Selected junk or other files are permanently deleted | Medium to high; inspect each card and selection | Requires Files by Google |
| App cache | Temporary files are removed; the app remains installed | Usually low, but the next launch can be slower | Available for apps that expose a cache setting |
| App storage/data | Accounts, settings, saved data and other app data are permanently deleted | High | Available in an app’s storage settings; avoid unless you understand the consequence |
| Backed-up photos and videos | The local copy is removed while the backed-up copy remains online | High if backup was incomplete or attached to a different account | Requires a verified Google Photos backup and internet access to view cloud copies |
| Transfer to a computer or SD card | A second copy is created elsewhere, then the phone copy can be deleted | Low after you verify the transfer; deleting before verification is risky | Computer works broadly; SD cards require a supported phone |
| App archiving | App software, permissions, temporary files and notifications are removed while the icon and data remain | Medium; restoration depends on app-store availability | Version, hardware and app support vary; some controls require Android 15 |
1. Inspect storage usage in Android Settings
- Open Settings and select Storage. On some phones, Storage is under a device-care, battery-and-device-care, or similar section; manufacturers can rename or rearrange the menus.
- Wait for Android to calculate categories such as apps, images, videos, audio, documents, downloads and system files.
- Open the largest category and identify specific files or apps before changing anything. A large “apps” total can include both the installed program and its stored data; a large “videos” total may be offline downloads rather than camera recordings.
- Record which account, folder or app owns important files. This prevents deleting a local copy that is the only copy.
Some storage-management options differ by Android release. If a control described below is missing, it may be unavailable on that phone, restricted by the manufacturer or tied to a newer Android version.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
How to read the categories
The category with the largest total is the best place to investigate, but it is not automatically the safest thing to erase. “Apps” can include user data and downloaded content as well as the program itself. “Images” and “videos” can combine camera media, screenshots, messaging attachments and files saved by editing apps. “System” space is used by Android and is not a normal folder for manual cleanup. Open subcategories where your phone provides them, then identify the actual folders or apps before confirming a deletion.
Check the total again after each major action rather than performing many destructive actions at once. This makes it easier to see what changed and to stop if an app or file behaves unexpectedly.
2. Remove files you can identify
Downloads
Open the app that downloaded the item and use its own download-management screen when possible. A browser, messaging app or document app may keep downloads in a separate folder. Delete only files you recognize, then empty that app’s trash or recycle area if it has one; otherwise the space may not return immediately.
Offline music, video and maps
Streaming and navigation apps often keep offline copies for use without an internet connection. Remove downloads from inside the originating app rather than deleting an unfamiliar folder in a file manager. Check whether a playlist, episode, film or map can be downloaded again before treating it as disposable.
Screenshots, recordings and duplicate media
Screen recordings and camera videos are often much larger than ordinary photographs. Sort a gallery or file manager by size when that option exists, and inspect duplicates side by side. Keep the highest-quality or edited version, and verify that a shared or backed-up copy exists before deleting the device copy.
Messaging attachments
Large images, videos and voice files saved by messaging apps can be hidden in app-specific folders. Use the messaging app’s storage-management page first; it can show conversations or attachment types more clearly than a generic file browser. Removing an attachment from the phone may also remove its offline availability inside the conversation.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Other easy-to-miss copies
Look for exported edits, screen recordings, old installation packages and files saved by a document scanner or video editor. Do not delete a file merely because its name looks unfamiliar. Open it, check its location and determine whether another copy exists. If you cannot identify it, leave it in place until you can copy it elsewhere.
3. Use Files by Google, but review every suggestion
- Open Files by Google and select Clean.
- Read each cleanup card, such as junk files, duplicate files, old screenshots or unused items. Open the card to see the individual files whenever that option is offered.
- Deselect anything you still need, including files that exist only on this phone or that you may need without an internet connection.
- Confirm the cleanup only after checking the selection. Google warns that clearing junk files or deleting files with Files by Google permanently deletes the data.
Google describes junk-file cleanup as separate from app settings, but “junk” does not mean “recoverable.” Treat the confirmation screen as a permanent-delete prompt, not as a temporary recycle bin. If you are unsure about a file, leave it selected out and move it to a computer first.
4. Clear app cache without clearing app data
Cache is temporary data an app can recreate. Google’s Android guidance states: “Clear cache: Deletes temporary data. Some apps may be slow the next time that you open them.” The app, account and saved content remain in place, although the first launch may take longer while files are rebuilt.
- Open Settings.
- Open Apps (the label may be App management or similar), then choose the app using substantial space.
- Select Storage or Storage & cache.
- Choose Clear cache, not Clear storage or Clear data.
- Reopen the app and check that it behaves normally. If it is briefly slower, allow time for the cache to rebuild.
Clear storage is a different operation. Google defines it as “Permanently deletes all app data.” It can sign you out, erase downloaded content, reset preferences and remove locally saved progress. Before using it, look for a delete-downloads, reset or account-management option inside the app itself, and confirm that important data is synchronized or exported.
Cache clearing is most useful when one app has an unusually large temporary-data total. It is not a substitute for deleting videos, downloads or app-owned offline media. If the cache is small, clearing it will make little visible difference.

Photos and videos can be the largest category on a phone. If Google Photos reports that items are backed up, you can use its option to remove the device copies. The backed-up versions remain available in Google Photos when the phone has an internet connection.

- Open Google Photos and switch to the account where your photos are stored.
- Check backup status and inspect recent photos, videos and folders—not just older items. A photo that appears in the gallery is not proof that its full-resolution copy finished uploading.
- Confirm that the important items are visible from the backed-up library and that the correct account is active.
- Use the app’s Free up space or equivalent remove-device-copies workflow, then read the item count before confirming.
- Afterward, open several older items while connected to the internet. They should stream from the backup; they may not be available offline.
Do not enable automatic Smart Storage casually. Google describes it as clearing backed-up photos and videos when device storage is nearly full. That behavior can be useful during an emergency, but you should understand which account is backing up the files and that the local copies will no longer be on the phone.
6. Move files off the phone, then delete verified copies
Move to a computer
- Connect the phone to the computer with a data-capable USB cable and unlock the phone.
- Choose the phone’s file-transfer mode if Android presents a USB notification.
- Copy photos, videos, documents and recordings to a clearly named folder on the computer. Copy first; do not use a move operation for irreplaceable material.
- Open several transferred files on the computer and compare counts or folder sizes with the phone.
- Only after verification, delete the phone copies and empty any phone trash folder.
Move to an SD card
An SD card is an option only on phones with an SD-card slot and compatible software. Files by Google can move or copy files to an SD card when one is available. Use copy-and-verify for important data, and remember that an SD card stores files; it does not automatically expand internal space for every app or convert internal app storage into removable storage.
Label the destination clearly so you know whether a folder contains a complete copy or only selected files. Keep the card or computer available before deleting the originals. A second copy that has not been opened or checked is not a verified backup.

7. Consider app archiving when app software is the problem
Archiving is different from clearing cache and different from deleting personal files. Google explains that when an app is archived, the device removes its software, permissions, temporary files and notifications but retains the app icon and data. This can reclaim the program’s installed space while preserving a path to restore it later.
- The feature is not universal. Availability depends on Android version, device hardware and whether the app supports archiving.
- Some manual archive controls require Android 15 and supported hardware; other phones may offer automatic archiving only.
- Restoration generally requires the app to remain available from the device’s app store and an internet connection to download it again.
- An archived app will not send notifications until restored, so do not archive an app that must receive alerts continuously.
Use archiving for infrequently used apps whose data you want to retain. If an app contains data that is not synchronized or exportable, confirm how restoration works before archiving it. Archiving is not a promise that a discontinued, delisted or incompatible app can be returned later.
A practical order for a nearly full phone
- Inspect Settings > Storage and identify the largest category.
- Delete recognizable downloads, offline media and duplicate screenshots or recordings.
- Review Files by Google > Clean and confirm only selected, understood items.
- Clear cache for unusually large apps; never choose Clear storage unless you intend to erase that app’s data.
- Verify Google Photos backup before removing local photo and video copies.
- Copy remaining files to a computer or supported SD card, verify them, then delete the originals from the phone.
- Check for app archiving if installed app software—not personal files—is the dominant consumer of space.
Reopen Settings > Storage after each major action. Android may take time to recalculate totals, and deleting files from an app’s trash or recycle area may be necessary before the space is reported as free.

Troubleshooting common problems
Storage barely changes after deletion
- Empty the gallery, file manager or app trash if it has one.
- Wait for Android to recalculate storage, then check the category again.
- Look for a second copy in a messaging, editing or download folder.
- Restart the phone only after confirming that the deletion completed; restarting does not itself clean storage.
The “apps” category is still huge
Open the largest apps individually and compare app size, user data and cache. Clear cache where appropriate. For user data, use the app’s own download-removal or export controls first; clearing storage is a permanent reset, not a routine cleanup.
Photos disappeared from the gallery
Check Google Photos’ account and library while connected to the internet. Removing a device copy can make an item unavailable offline even though the backed-up version remains online. If an item was never backed up, look in the phone’s trash or backup destination before taking further action.
An archived app will not return
Check the internet connection, available storage and the app store listing. Restoration depends on the app still being available and compatible with the device. Archived data is retained by the device, but archiving is not a guarantee that a discontinued app can be reinstalled.
A cleanup card selects something important
Cancel the cleanup, open the card and inspect each item. Files by Google lets you review selections before confirmation; deselect anything that is your only copy, needed offline or not clearly identifiable. Copy uncertain files to a computer first.
Actions to avoid
- Do not tap Clear storage when you mean Clear cache.
- Do not accept every Files by Google suggestion without opening the selection.
- Do not delete photos merely because they appear in Google Photos; verify backup completion and account identity first.
- Do not delete a phone copy immediately after transferring it; open the destination files first.
- Do not assume an SD card can hold every app or increase internal app storage on every model.
- Do not expect force-closing apps to solve an internal-storage shortage.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will clearing an app’s cache uninstall it?
No. Clear cache removes temporary files and leaves the app installed. The next launch may be slower while the app recreates those files. Clear storage or Clear data is the destructive option that permanently deletes app data.

Can I free space without an internet connection?
Yes. You can review local downloads, offline media, screenshots, duplicates and app caches, or copy files to a computer or supported SD card. Cloud-backed copies and archived-app restoration require connectivity to view or download them.
Does an SD card increase internal storage for apps?
Not automatically. An SD card can hold files on phones that support one, but it does not universally expand internal app storage. Compatibility and available controls depend on the phone.
What happens when an Android app is archived?
The device removes the app software, permissions, temporary files and notifications while retaining the icon and app data. Restoration depends on Android support, available storage, an internet connection and the app still being available from the app store.
Why did clearing cache recover almost no space?
Cache is only temporary data, and some apps may have little of it. Large totals often come from videos, downloads, offline media or app data instead. Check Settings > Storage and investigate the largest category.
Is Files by Google junk cleanup reversible?
Treat it as permanent deletion. Google warns that clearing junk files or deleting files with Files by Google permanently deletes the selected data, so review every item before confirming.
How much storage will these steps free?
There is no standard amount. The result depends on the phone’s files, cached data, offline downloads, photo backups and the actions you choose. Check the storage total after each major step.
The Bottom Line
Start with Settings > Storage, target the largest category you can identify, and review every deletion. Remove known downloads and offline media, clear cache rather than app storage, verify Google Photos backups before removing local copies, and copy files to a computer or supported SD card before deleting them. If app software is the problem, use archiving only when your Android version, hardware and app-store availability support it.
