For a valuable original video-game poster, the safest policy is to keep the original in controlled storage and display a well-made reproduction. Paper and printing inks suffer cumulative, irreversible light damage, so a frame can slow deterioration but cannot make permanent display safe. If you decide to show the original, use conservation-grade materials, keep it away from direct or intense light, separate it from the glazing, and limit the time it is exposed.
This guide explains how to choose the frame package, mount the poster without adhesive damage, manage the display environment, store it between exhibitions, and recognize when a paper conservator should take over.
Why light is the main preservation problem
Light damage is cumulative. Ultraviolet radiation accelerates fading, yellowing and chemical breakdown, but visible light also damages paper and inks. The damage does not reverse when the poster is moved into darkness: faded colors, discoloration and embrittlement remain.
The Library of Congress states: “Long-term/permanent display of paper-based materials is not recommended because light exposure causes permanent damage that manifests in fading, yellowing/discoloration, embrittlement, and other irreversible changes.” That warning applies to works on paper generally; no published longevity test establishes a specific safe display period for collectible video-game posters.

UV protection is useful but limited
UV-filtering glass or acrylic removes much of the ultraviolet reaching the poster. It does not block all visible-light damage, and it does not compensate for a bright location or years of continuous exposure. Lowering light intensity and shortening exposure time usually provides more protection than relying on UV filtering alone. The Canadian Conservation Institute publishes estimated fade-time ranges for paper materials at different light levels and sensitivities, but those ranges are general estimates, not a forecast for a particular poster whose paper, inks and condition have not been examined.
Original or reproduction?
If the poster is rare, expensive, signed, unusually colorful, or historically important, use a facsimile for routine viewing and reserve the original for occasional, low-light display. This separates the enjoyment of the image from the irreversible exposure of the collectible. A reproduction should be identified as such and should never be sold or stored as the original.
Choose a preservation strategy before buying a frame
| Approach | Preservation effect | When it makes sense | Main compromise |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original in controlled storage; reproduction on the wall | Minimizes cumulative light exposure and handling of the original | High-value, rare, fragile, or irreplaceable posters | You do not see the original in everyday display |
| Original in a conservation-minded frame for limited periods | Reduces contact, pollutants and UV exposure compared with ordinary framing, but light damage still accumulates | Owners who want occasional display and can rotate it out | Requires a dark, stable location and a display schedule |
| Original on permanent display in a bright room | Provides the least protection, even with UV-filtering glazing | Only when the owner accepts progressive, irreversible change | Fading and paper deterioration cannot be undone |
Decide this first. A more expensive frame cannot eliminate the risk created by continuous bright exposure.

Build the frame package from stable, compatible materials
Use archival mat board
The Library of Congress recommends mat board made from 100% cotton rag or chemically purified, lignin-free wood pulp. The board should be pH-neutral or slightly alkaline and at least four-ply. These specifications reduce the risk that acidic or lignin-rich materials will discolor the poster as they age.

The mat should create a physical air space around the poster. A window mat covers the edges while leaving the image visible; a separate spacer can create the same gap when a different presentation is required. Do not allow the printed surface to lie against the glazing.
Select glazing that matches the frame and handling conditions
UV-filtering glass or acrylic is appropriate where the poster will be displayed. The Library of Congress notes that acrylic is lighter and less brittle than glass, while also being more prone to scratching and possible bowing in larger sizes. Choose according to frame size, how often it will be moved, and the characteristics of the specific glazing product.
| Glazing | Advantages | Limitations to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| UV-filtering glass | Rigid surface and good scratch resistance | Heavier and more brittle; breakage is a handling hazard |
| UV-filtering acrylic | Lighter and less likely to shatter during handling | Scratches more easily and can bow in large frames; protect the surface during cleaning and transport |
“UV-filtering” describes ultraviolet transmission, not immunity from fading. Visible light still reaches the poster, so the frame must be paired with sensible placement and limited exposure.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsProvide a stable backing and frame
Use a rigid, chemically stable backing compatible with the mat board. Avoid unknown foams, untreated wood, acidic cardboard and decorative materials that can release harmful compounds into the closed package. A conservation framer can specify a backing and frame that remain stable at the poster’s size and weight.

Mount the poster without adhesive damage
Ordinary tape and glue can stain paper, pull fibers, leave brittle residues and make future conservation harder. The Library of Congress specifically warns against self-stick tape, including products marketed as archival. Do not attach an original poster directly to a backing with pressure-sensitive adhesive.
Preferred attachment methods
- Non-adhesive photo corners: The poster rests in folded corners rather than being glued to the support. The corners must be sized and positioned so they do not bend or abrade the paper.
- Conservation hinges: Japanese paper hinges adhered with wheat-starch paste or methyl cellulose are established conservation methods. They require appropriate paper, paste preparation and placement; a conservator or experienced conservation framer should install them on a valuable original.
- Spacer and mat support: The mat holds the sheet at its edges while the mounting system allows slight movement instead of restraining every part of the paper.
Never laminate the poster, dry-mount it, spray adhesive onto it, or place tape over tears as a do-it-yourself “archival” repair. Reversibility matters: a future conservator should be able to remove the mounting without sacrificing original paper or ink.
Step-by-step framing workflow
- Document the condition. Photograph the front and back in even light. Record folds, tears, stains, pinholes, writing, detached layers, flaking ink and any previous repairs.
- Inspect before flattening. Look for brittle edges, powdery or lifting ink, mold odor, active mold, cockling and pressure-sensitive tape. Stop if any of these are present; do not force the sheet flat.
- Prepare a clean work surface. Remove food, liquids, jewelry and rough objects. Wash and dry your hands, or use clean gloves only when they improve control; slippery gloves can cause a large sheet to fall.
- Support the entire sheet. Slide a stiff, clean sheet of paper or mat board underneath before lifting. The Canadian Conservation Institute advises supporting paper with stiff paper or mat board when moving it.
- Choose the attachment system. Use non-adhesive corners for a suitable, stable sheet. For hinges, have a qualified paper conservator or conservation framer select materials and placement.
- Set the air gap. Install a window mat or spacers thick enough to ensure no part of the poster touches the glazing, including raised folds or loose edges.
- Close without pressure. Fit the backing and frame so the poster is held securely but not crushed. Check that clips or points do not bow the package.
- Recheck after standing the frame upright. Examine the poster from an angle for contact with the glazing, slipping, new cockling or pressure marks before putting it on the wall.
Control where and how long the framed poster is displayed
Choose a low-risk location
- Keep the frame out of direct sunlight, sunbeams, skylight glare and intense spotlights.
- Do not place it above radiators, heaters, fireplaces, vents or equipment that produces heat.
- Avoid rooms with unstable conditions, including attics, basements and areas subject to leaks or condensation.
- Keep the frame away from windows that are frequently opened onto damp or polluted air.
- Use blinds, curtains or repositioning to reduce the amount and duration of light reaching the frame.
There is no universal “safe forever” light level for an unexamined poster. Ink sensitivity, paper composition, existing fading and the color palette all change the risk. Treat every hour of illumination as part of a finite exposure budget.
Limit exposure time
For a valuable original, rotate it out of the frame and into dark storage rather than leaving it up continuously. A timer or occupancy-controlled light can prevent unnecessary illumination, but neither device makes bright light harmless. Keep a simple display log so you know how long the original has been exposed and can replace it before changes become obvious.

Watch for environmental symptoms
High relative humidity can cause paper to swell, ripple and distort, accelerate chemical degradation and support mold. Heat and rapid environmental swings add stress. If you see new waviness, edge lifting, mold growth, a musty odor, flaking ink or condensation inside the frame, move the frame away from the hazard without opening it in a contaminated area and obtain professional advice.

Use archival enclosures
For an unframed poster, use acid-free folders and boxes sized so the sheet is supported without being forced into a crease. The Canadian Conservation Institute recommends acid-free folders and boxes for unframed works. Keep the poster in a clean enclosure with enough room to remove it without dragging an edge across the box.
Handle as little as possible
Plan each move before touching the sheet. Clear the route, support the full poster with stiff paper or mat board, and carry it with two hands. Do not grab a single corner, roll a brittle sheet tightly, or stack heavy objects on top of the enclosure. Return the poster to its enclosure promptly after inspection or display.

Attics and basements are poor choices because temperature and humidity can fluctuate and leaks are more likely. Avoid heat sources, exterior walls with condensation risk and locations where water pipes run overhead. Stable, moderate indoor conditions are preferable to a nominally “dry” space that changes sharply from day to night.

Know when DIY treatment is unsafe
Cleaning, repair, humidification and flattening can permanently alter a poster. Water can tide-mark paper, dissolve or move inks, and encourage mold; pressure can break brittle fibers; aggressive erasers can remove image material. A poster that looks dirty may have friable pigment, a water-sensitive surface or historic evidence that should be retained.
Contact a paper conservator when the poster is:
- Rare, expensive, signed, historically significant or irreplaceable
- Brittle, torn, folded, water-damaged, mold-affected or actively deteriorating
- Covered with old tape, glue, lamination or an unknown repair
- Showing flaking, powdering or lifting ink
- Frequently handled, transported or exhibited
- Printed with inks whose stability is uncertain
The Library of Congress recommends a paper conservator when an item is particularly valuable, has progressing damage, is frequently handled or presents a complicated problem. It also notes that faded ink cannot be restored to its former intensity. A conservator can examine the paper and inks, test materials, recommend treatment and specify a reversible mounting system.
Work with a conservation framer or conservator
Questions to ask before authorizing work
- What mat-board fiber, pH and thickness will be used?
- What is the glazing’s UV transmission, and how will visible-light exposure be controlled?
- What spacer or window-mat design guarantees that no part of the poster touches the glazing?
- Will the poster be held with non-adhesive corners or reversible hinges rather than pressure-sensitive tape?
- How will the frame support a sheet of this size without bowing or crushing it?
- Will the condition be photographed and the mounting documented for future removal?
- What display duration and storage conditions are recommended for this specific poster?
Ask for written material specifications and a condition report. A professional should be willing to explain limitations instead of promising that a frame will preserve the poster indefinitely.
Separate treatment from framing
Framing does not replace conservation treatment. If the poster is dirty, distorted or damaged, have it examined before it is mounted. The correct sequence may be assessment, stabilization or treatment, then framing. In other cases, the safest recommendation is no treatment and a simple storage enclosure.
Maintenance checklist for an installed frame
- Inspect the front and back at regular intervals for glazing contact, slipping, new waviness, stains, mold or insect evidence.
- Check that the frame remains dry and is not receiving a new beam of sunlight after seasonal changes.
- Clean only the exterior glazing, using a method approved for that glazing material; never let liquid run into the frame edges.
- Do not open the package casually. Opening can introduce dust, disturb the mounting and expose the poster to handling.
- Record any change with dated photographs so a conservator can distinguish old damage from active deterioration.
- Rotate the original out of display when the planned exposure period ends, and keep a reproduction available for continued viewing.
A practical preservation policy
Treat the poster as a light-sensitive paper artifact, not as ordinary wall décor. Store the original in an acid-free enclosure whenever possible; when display is important, use a stable four-ply-or-thicker mat, UV-filtering glazing, a spacer or window mat, reversible non-adhesive mounting and a low-light location. Keep the exposure limited, support the sheet during every move, and refer valuable or damaged work to a paper conservator before attempting cleaning, flattening or repair.
