To pass along a voice message in Messages, save it to Voice Memos and share the resulting recording. In Apple’s iPhone guide, a voice message in Messages is called an audio message; Apple documents saving it to Voice Memos, then sharing the recording from there.
Save the audio message to Voice Memos
-
Open Messages and go to the conversation with the audio message.

Apple’s Voice Memos sharing instructions describe a rendered option that shares a single .m4a file, as well as an editable option for recipients with compatible devices and software updates. For a straightforward pass-along, choose the rendered audio file. It is a shared recording, not the original Messages bubble.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCan you forward the audio message directly in Messages?
If your iPhone shows a forward control for the audio message, you can use it. But Apple’s general message-forwarding instructions describe forwarding text messages, while its audio-message guide documents saving the audio to Voice Memos. Those instructions do not establish that direct forwarding of an audio-message bubble is available on every iOS version. If the control is absent, use the save-and-share steps above.

Keep audio messages from expiring
Apple says an audio recording is deleted from the sender’s conversation two minutes after sending or listening unless the sender taps Keep. After listening, a recipient also has two minutes to tap Keep to save the message in the conversation. To change the expiration setting, go to Settings > Apps > Messages > Expire under Audio Messages, then choose Never. You can also save an individual message to Voice Memos instead of relying on it remaining in the conversation. See Apple’s audio-message guidance for these options.
