The simplest way to fly in Minecraft is Creative mode: double-tap the jump control, hold jump to rise, and use sneak to descend. Survival players cannot use Creative flight unless a permitted command changes their game mode or grants an ability. On a multiplayer world, commands also require the right permission. Bedrock Dedicated Server administrators can control these options in server.properties. Elytra flight is a separate item-based mechanic; the authoritative material available here does not establish its current activation, durability, boosting or edition-specific details, so those points should not be guessed.
Choose the flight method that fits your world
“Flying” in Minecraft can mean two different things. Creative flight is unrestricted, free movement built into the Creative game mode. Elytra is a separate mechanic associated with an item and should not be treated as a Creative-mode toggle. Commands can change a player’s game mode, but command use is protected by cheats or server permissions.

Use the Creative instructions below when you need dependable, unrestricted movement. Use the command and server sections when you control the world or server. If you specifically need Elytra instructions, consult a current authoritative Minecraft reference for the version and edition you play; the available documentation does not support precise claims about activation, durability, fireworks or gliding physics.
How to fly in Creative mode
Creative flight is toggled by pressing the jump control twice quickly. Minecraft’s controls guide describes the keyboard action as double-tapping Space. After flight starts, holding the jump control moves you upward, while the sneak control moves you downward.

Keyboard controls
- Enter a world in Creative mode.
- Press Space twice in quick succession. The second press toggles flight on.
- Hold Space to ascend.
- Release Space to stop rising and use the normal movement controls to move horizontally.
- Hold Shift, the keyboard sneak key, to descend.
- Double-tap Space again to leave flight and return to normal ground movement.
The double tap is a toggle, not a requirement to keep holding jump. Holding Space after the toggle controls upward movement; holding Shift controls downward movement.
Xbox and Nintendo controllers
On Xbox and Nintendo controllers, double-tap A to toggle Creative flight. Hold A to rise. Use the controller’s sneak control to descend. The exact sneak button can vary with the platform’s control layout, so check the in-game controller mapping if the expected button does not work.

On PlayStation, double-tap X to begin or stop Creative flight. Hold X to rise and use O to move downward, according to Minecraft’s controls documentation.
Touch controls
On a phone or tablet, double-tap the on-screen jump button to toggle flight. Keep holding that jump control to rise. Use the on-screen downward-arrow control to descend. Because touch layouts can move or resize controls, identify the jump and downward-arrow buttons in the current HUD before troubleshooting flight.

What Creative flight does and does not require
- You do not need a command every time you fly if the world is already in Creative mode.
- You do not need an Elytra for Creative flight.
- Changing from Survival to Creative is a separate permission or cheat decision; see the command sections below.
- Creative flight is free flight, not the separate Elytra mechanic.
Enable the permissions needed for commands
Commands are entered in chat with a leading slash, but most commands are protected by a permission layer. Minecraft’s official command guidance calls this control “Allow Cheats.” Creative worlds default this setting on, while Survival worlds default it off. Multiplayer players also need a high-enough permission level.
Bedrock single-player
- Open the world and pause the game.
- Open Settings and select the Game tab.
- Find Allow Cheats and enable it.
- Return to the world and enter the required command in chat, beginning with
/.
Bedrock permanently disables achievements in that world when cheats are enabled. Turning cheats off later does not restore eligibility. Treat this as a world-level decision rather than a temporary switch.

Java single-player
Java Edition exposes Allow Commands during world creation and later in World Options. Enable it at creation time if you know the world will need commands. For an existing world, open its World Options and enable the command setting there, then use the command in chat.
Java single-player through LAN
To give LAN players command access, open the pause menu, choose Open to LAN, and configure both Game Mode and Allow Commands. This makes the permission choice part of the LAN session, so select the intended game mode before starting the session.

Realms and multiplayer servers
On a Realm or server owned by someone else, being able to open chat does not automatically grant command access. The owner or an administrator must provide the required permission. Minecraft’s multiplayer guidance states that users need a high-enough permission level; a player on another server must ask its operator. If you own the server or Realm, your owner-level access generally gives you the authority to configure the world or grant access.
Use the Bedrock command to enter Creative mode
On Bedrock, Microsoft’s documented command syntax is:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
/gamemode creative
The command accepts the mode names survival, creative, adventure, and default. After /gamemode creative succeeds, use the platform-specific double-jump control described above.
If the command is rejected
- “You do not have permission” or a similar error: Allow Cheats may be off in a Bedrock world, Allow Commands may be off in Java, or your multiplayer permission level may be too low.
- The command is treated as ordinary chat: Check that it begins with a forward slash and that commands are enabled for the current session.
- The command changes someone else’s mode unexpectedly: Confirm the target syntax and the player selected before sending a command. If you only need your own mode, run the command as the intended player or use the game’s command suggestions to select the correct target.
Configure flight-related behavior on a Bedrock Dedicated Server
Bedrock Dedicated Server uses an INI-style file named server.properties. The documented properties below control the default game mode, whether the server forces that mode on connecting clients, whether cheat commands are available, and the default player limit.

Set a server’s default mode to Creative
- Open the Bedrock Dedicated Server’s
server.propertiesfile. - Set
gamemode=creative. - Decide whether joining clients should always receive that configured mode. If so, set
force-gamemode=true; otherwise leave itfalse. - Save the file and start or restart the server according to your server administration procedure.
- Join the world and double-tap the platform’s jump control to begin flying.
Enable commands without making Creative the default
If players should remain in another game mode but administrators need command access, leave gamemode at the desired mode and set allow-cheats=true. Command use still depends on the player’s multiplayer permission level. Enabling the property does not by itself make every player an administrator.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhy force-gamemode matters
A saved world can contain players or world data associated with a different mode than the value currently configured. With force-gamemode=false, the server does not force the configured mode on every client. With force-gamemode=true, it sends clients the configured game mode, which prevents a player’s saved mode from overriding the server’s chosen mode when they connect.
Troubleshoot “I can’t fly” problems
Double-tapping does nothing
- Check that the player is actually in Creative mode. Double-tap flight is a Creative feature, not a universal toggle for Survival.
- Use the correct control for the platform: Space on keyboard, A on Xbox or Nintendo, X on PlayStation, or the on-screen jump button on touch.
- Press the jump control twice quickly, then hold it only after flight has toggled on. Holding the button without the initial double tap will not start Creative flight.
- On touch devices, confirm that you are pressing the current jump button rather than a resized or moved HUD control.
The game will not let you switch to Creative
- Bedrock single-player: enable Allow Cheats in Settings under Game.
- Java single-player: enable Allow Commands during world creation or in World Options.
- Java LAN: use Open to LAN and turn on Allow Commands for that session.
- Multiplayer: ask the Realm owner, server owner or operator to grant the required permission.
The server keeps putting players back in another mode
Inspect gamemode and force-gamemode in Bedrock Dedicated Server’s server.properties. A configured mode of survival combined with force-gamemode=true can send clients Survival even if the world was originally created with another mode. Set the intended mode and decide deliberately whether forcing it is appropriate.
Commands work for the owner but not for another player
This is a permission issue, not a flight-control issue. Multiplayer command access requires a high-enough permission level. The owner or operator must grant access; changing a player’s keyboard or controller settings will not solve it.
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
Achievements disappeared after enabling cheats
In Bedrock, enabling cheats permanently prevents achievements in that world, even if cheats are disabled later. There is no in-world switch that restores the previous achievement status. If achievements matter, make the permission decision before enabling cheats in a new world.

Creative flight is a game-mode capability with a documented toggle: double-tap jump, hold jump to rise, and use sneak to descend. Elytra is a separate mechanic that requires its own item and rules. The authoritative information available for this article does not adequately establish the current Elytra activation sequence, durability behavior, firework boosting, gliding physics or edition differences.
That distinction matters when diagnosing a problem. A player who can fly in Creative has not necessarily learned how Elytra works, and obtaining or equipping an Elytra should not be assumed to grant the same free vertical movement as Creative mode. Conversely, changing a server’s gamemode or allow-cheats setting documents Creative and command behavior; it does not document every Elytra rule.
What can safely be concluded
- Creative flight is available through the controls listed in Minecraft’s controls guidance.
- Commands can change a player’s game mode when cheats or the necessary permissions are enabled.
- Bedrock Dedicated Server properties can set Creative as the configured mode and can enable cheat commands.
- Elytra-specific activation, durability, boosting and physics require a current authoritative Elytra reference for the edition and version in question.
A practical decision path
- Need unrestricted movement immediately? Use Creative mode and double-tap jump.
- Already in Survival? Determine whether you control the world. If you do, enable the applicable command setting and use
/gamemode creativeon Bedrock; if you do not, ask the owner or operator. - Running Bedrock Dedicated Server? Choose the intended
gamemode, decide whetherforce-gamemodeshould be true, and setallow-cheats=trueonly when command access is wanted. - Protecting Bedrock achievements? Do not enable cheats in that world; use a separate world for command-enabled play.
- Looking specifically for Elytra flight? Treat it as a different mechanic and verify the current, edition-specific instructions before relying on details not established here.
Platform control reference
| Platform | Start or stop Creative flight | Rise | Descend |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keyboard | Double-tap Space | Hold Space | Hold Shift |
| Xbox or Nintendo controller | Double-tap A | Hold A | Use the platform’s sneak control |
| PlayStation controller | Double-tap X | Hold X | Press O |
| Touch | Double-tap the on-screen jump button | Hold the jump button | Use the downward-arrow control |
Minecraft notes that its basic controls are broadly similar between Bedrock and Java, but the physical control differs by input device. When a control does not match the table, verify the active platform mapping rather than assuming that a Java keyboard instruction applies unchanged to a controller or touch screen.
