To flip an entire clip in Premiere Pro, apply Horizontal Flip for a left-to-right reversal or Vertical Flip to turn the image top-to-bottom. Both are Transform effects. A horizontal flip changes the image, not playback direction: the clip still plays forward.
Choose the right effect for the result you want

Flip a clip horizontally or vertically
- Select the clip: In the timeline, select the video clip whose image you want to change.
- Find the effect: Open the Effects panel and search for
Horizontal FliporVertical Flip. - Apply it: Apply the matching effect to the selected timeline clip.
- Check the result: Inspect the Program Monitor. Use Horizontal Flip for a left-right reversal; use Vertical Flip if the image should be upside down.
These steps are practical guidance based on Adobe’s documented effect names and behavior; Adobe’s Transform reference does not specify one universal sequence of panel clicks for every desktop release. If you cannot find an effect, check the effect names and availability for your installed version.
Check the image and any text
A horizontal flip reverses the entire frame, so lettering and logos in the picture can appear backward. Inspect the finished image wherever readable text, branding, or directional details matter. The flip does not reverse the clip’s playback direction.

Confirm effect availability in your Premiere version
Effect names and availability can change between releases, and older tutorials may describe features that are no longer current. Adobe’s Premiere 26.0 effects and transitions changes, updated February 25, 2026, lists Horizontal Flip and Vertical Flip among Transform effects and lists the older Flip Over transition as removed. Do not confuse that removed transition with the current Flip Motion Impacts transition.
