“Flash a screen” can mean two different things: rewriting a device’s software, or seeing the display flicker or flash. Firmware flashing is not a screen-panel repair, and a flickering display is not a reason by itself to reinstall firmware. The steps below cover Google Pixel and Nexus guidance only; other devices need their manufacturer’s instructions.
First, identify what you mean by “flash”
- Reinstall or update device software: This is a firmware operation. It changes software on the device and must follow instructions for the exact model and build.
- The display flashes or flickers: This is a symptom to troubleshoot. It does not establish that firmware is the cause, and flashing firmware is not a universal fix.
How to update or repair software on a supported Pixel
Google’s Update and Software Repair tool is documented for Pixel 4a and later, including Pixel Fold. You need a computer and a USB cable that connects the phone to it. Use Google’s Update and Software Repair tool instructions and follow the current on-screen steps. The documented eligibility and workflow are Pixel-specific, not general Android instructions.
When to use a factory image—and what it does
Google provides factory images for restoring original Nexus or Pixel firmware. Its documentation says that sideloading a full OTA image is usually easier and safer than installing a factory image; in most cases, a full OTA sideload does not require a data wipe or an unlocked bootloader. Choose a factory image only when that is the restoration path you need and you can verify the exact device and build.

Which Pixel firmware route fits your situation?

These are Google’s Pixel and Nexus routes, not a comparison that applies to other manufacturers. If you cannot confirm that an image and its instructions match your exact device and build, do not proceed.

Start with support for the exact device and the symptom you see rather than attempting a firmware flash. Pixel owners can use Google’s separate guidance for screen appearance issues and, where relevant, its freezing and troubleshooting guidance. Those are distinct support paths; the sources do not establish a universal checklist that can determine whether every flicker is software- or hardware-related.
