Match the fix to what looks wrong: pinch out on a playing video to fill more of the screen, use Settings > Display > Full screen apps if the YouTube app window itself looks constrained, and check Flex mode if the problem happens while the phone is partially folded. These controls do different things; none guarantees a full, uncropped picture for every video or app version.
First identify which part of YouTube’s layout is wrong
A Galaxy Z Fold can show YouTube in several ways: as a video inside the player, as an app window on the unfolded inner display, in a layout adapted to a partially folded phone, or across a transition between the cover and main displays. A remedy aimed at one of these may have no effect on the others.
Watch for the exact moment and location of the problem before changing a setting. That observation prevents you from using an experimental app-scaling option to solve black bars that are actually part of a video.

- YouTube’s controls and interface look narrow, letterboxed, or oddly scaled on the unfolded display: check Samsung’s Full screen apps setting, then consider a Labs option if one is available.
- The layout changes when the phone is propped open at an angle: check Flex mode and its panel settings.
- YouTube refreshes or reloads when you fold or unfold the phone: treat this as a display-transition continuity issue, not ordinary letterboxing.
- The problem occurs only with one upload: compare another video before changing system settings. The upload’s aspect ratio or embedded bars may be the deciding factor.
Before changing anything, note whether the phone is on the cover display or the inner display, whether it is fully open or partly folded, and whether the YouTube player is in portrait or landscape. Also note your Fold model, Android version, One UI version, region and YouTube version. Samsung’s menus and available options vary by device and software, so a setting shown in one guide may not appear on every Fold.

Make a video fill more of the screen
Use YouTube’s pinch gesture
- Open the video in YouTube and start playback.
- Place two fingers on the video image and spread them apart to zoom in.
- Check the enlarged frame for clipped subtitles, faces, logos or text near the edges.
- Pinch inward on the video to return to its original framing.
The gesture enlarges the picture; it does not change the video file or make its original frame wider. To fill more of the display, the player crops part of the image. That trade-off can be acceptable for a cinematic clip, but it may hide details that matter in a tutorial, a game, a sports scoreboard or a video with captions and on-screen text.
Use the gesture on the video itself, not on the surrounding YouTube page. If two fingers are moving the page rather than the picture, make sure playback is active and that your fingers start within the video area. The available result can also differ between the cover display and the larger inner display because each has a different shape.
Samsung explains that a video may not fill every corner of a Galaxy screen even when the player is in fullscreen mode. The reason can be the source video’s aspect ratio, not a fault in the Fold or YouTube. Samsung also notes that zoom cannot remove black bars that the creator encoded into the video itself, and that videos whose aspect ratio already matches the screen cannot use this zoom function. Why zoom may not give the result you expect
- The picture fills more of the display, but the sides or top and bottom disappear: that is the expected crop from zooming. Pinch inward to restore the full image.
- Black bars remain after zooming: if the bars are embedded in the uploaded video, a player gesture cannot remove them. Bars can therefore remain even though the app and display are working normally.
- The zoom gesture does nothing: Samsung says the function is unavailable for videos whose aspect ratio matches the screen. The specific video, rather than the Fold’s display, may determine whether zoom is available.
- The video still does not reach every corner: fullscreen playback and a full-display crop are not the same thing. The result depends on the source video’s proportions and encoding; do not assume every video can fill the inner display without cropping or distortion.
- Subtitles or controls are cut off: return to the original framing before continuing to watch. Enlarging the picture is optional; it is not a quality or resolution repair.
A useful test is to play a different upload with a different shape. If one video fills the display while another keeps bars, that points to the uploads rather than to a global Fold setting. If every video has the same unused area and the entire app also looks narrow, move to the app-window checks below.
Make the YouTube app window use the unfolded display
Check Full screen apps
If YouTube’s entire interface—not just the video—looks constrained on the unfolded screen, check whether Samsung offers a full-screen presentation for the app:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Display.
- Open Full screen apps.
- Select YouTube.
- Choose Full screen if that option is available.
This setting controls how an app is presented on the display; it is separate from YouTube’s video zoom gesture. Full screen apps can affect the app window and its usable display area, but it cannot rewrite the aspect ratio of an uploaded video. You may still see bars in a correctly sized app if the video itself was produced in a different shape.

Samsung’s current foldable guidance uses this path, but the exact menu names and choices can depend on the Fold generation and software build. If YouTube is absent from the list or Full screen is not offered, that option is not available for the app on the configuration you have. Do not infer that the display is defective merely because a menu item is missing.

YouTube can therefore look correct on one display and constrained on the other without the two symptoms having the same cause. Compare the same video and the same orientation on both screens before deciding which setting to change. Read Samsung’s Full screen apps and foldable guidance.
Try Labs only if the standard setting does not address the layout
Samsung Labs may expose options such as Landscape view for portrait apps or App screen zoom. These are optional experiments for orientation or scaling problems, not guaranteed YouTube fixes. Samsung describes Labs features as experimental and notes that options vary by device.
- Open Samsung’s Labs settings on your device and look for the relevant option, if present.
- Change only one option at a time, then return to YouTube and check the same screen that looked wrong.
- Test both the app interface and a playing video, because an orientation or scale change can affect the window without changing the video’s encoded frame.
- If the interface becomes less usable or the problem remains unchanged, restore the previous setting before trying another option.
Changing one variable at a time makes it easier to tell whether a setting helped. Keep a note of the original value so you can undo an experiment. A Labs option may solve a portrait-app orientation problem while doing nothing for letterboxing, and a setting available on one Fold generation may be absent on another.
Do not assume that every Fold has the same Labs menu, or that an option will be available for every software release. Samsung’s current explanation of these experimental options is at Samsung Labs guidance for Galaxy foldables.

Do not apply an older aspect-ratio path to every Fold
Samsung’s One UI 3.1.1-era announcement described a Customized App Aspect Ratios option in Labs, with choices for Full screen, 16:9, 4:3 and App default. That guidance specifically names the original Galaxy Fold, Z Fold2 and Z Fold3. It is useful historical context, but it is not evidence that the same menu or choices exist on newer Fold models or current software.

If an older instruction tells you to look for that exact label and you cannot find it, use the current Full screen apps and Labs menus on your phone instead of repeatedly searching for a retired path. The older setting also controlled app presentation; it could not remove creator-added bars from a video. The announcement is available from the Samsung Newsroom.
Use Flex mode when the phone is partially folded
If the layout changes when the Fold is bent into a partially open position, the phone may be adapting to that posture rather than displaying the same layout as it does when fully open. Samsung lists YouTube among apps usable while a Fold is partially folded. Flex mode can arrange an app and its controls for that posture; it is not a way to remove bars embedded in a video or correct every third-party app layout issue.
Flex mode is relevant when you want to set the phone down at an angle, with the video in one portion of the display and controls in another. It is not the first setting to try when the phone is lying completely open and only one video has unused space.
Check the Flex mode panel setting
- Open Settings.
- Tap Advanced features.
- Open Flex mode panel.
- Review the available controls and enable or configure the panel if that matches how you want to use the phone.
- Partially fold the phone and check YouTube’s layout in that position.
The available apps, controls and exact settings vary by model. If you want the phone propped up with video on the upper half and controls available below, Flex mode is the relevant feature to investigate. If YouTube does not expose the behavior you expect, that can reflect app support for the particular Fold build rather than a problem with the hinge or inner screen. The posture-specific behavior is intentional: Samsung’s developer explanation describes Flex mode as apps adapting on a partially folded device and notes that developers need to design for the half-open posture. Fix YouTube refreshing during a fold or unfold
If YouTube reloads when you switch between the cover display and the main display, use the continuity troubleshooting path rather than changing video zoom. Samsung documents a specific fix for a continuity problem after Android 16 upgrades; it is relevant to an app refreshing during the display transition, not to a video that simply has bars or fails to fill the screen.

- Open Settings.
- Tap Display.
- Open Screen layout and zoom.
- Change Screen zoom once, then return it to your preferred position.
- Fold and unfold the phone to test whether YouTube still refreshes.
- Check for available software updates if the issue continues.
Changing Screen zoom twice is a troubleshooting reset for the documented transition symptom. It is not a recommendation to use a larger or smaller permanent zoom level, and it does not change the aspect ratio of a YouTube upload.
Follow this sequence only when the symptom is a refresh during the display transition. Samsung’s instructions are tied to the Android 16 continuity issue and should not be treated as a universal solution for every Fold or every YouTube layout problem. Common pitfalls to avoid
- Confusing black bars with a narrow app window: bars inside the player can belong to the upload, while a narrow YouTube interface points to app presentation. Check both separately.
- Expecting Full screen apps to uncrop a video: it changes the app window, not the source video’s frame.
- Zooming without checking captions: the gesture can crop subtitles, faces and important edge details.
- Changing several Labs options together: you will not know which option changed the result, and restoring the layout becomes harder.
- Following a menu path from a different Fold generation: the Customized App Aspect Ratios path was documented for the original Fold, Z Fold2 and Z Fold3 with One UI 3.1.1-era guidance, not as a universal current setting.
- Using Flex mode for a fully open phone: Flex mode addresses the partially folded posture and does not repair ordinary letterboxing.
- Treating a fold/unfold refresh as a zoom problem: use the continuity steps only for the transition-refresh symptom.
If none of these changes fixes it
- Recheck the symptom: decide whether the remaining issue is in the video frame, app interface, partially folded posture or fold/unfold transition. Avoid changing a setting for a different symptom.
- Compare another video: a second upload helps show whether the limitation follows the source video or every YouTube session.
- Check the relevant menu on your own device: a missing option can reflect differences in Fold generation or software, rather than a setting you overlooked.
- Restore experimental changes: if a Labs setting made the layout worse, return it to the earlier value before continuing.
- Check for software updates: Samsung specifically recommends checking for updates when troubleshooting the documented continuity-refresh issue.
- Keep the source video in mind: if the app interface uses the display as expected but one video retains bars or loses content when enlarged, the video’s framing or encoding may be the limiting factor.
Because the exact Fold model, region, carrier software, One UI build and YouTube version determine which menus are present, there is no single universal aspect-ratio setting to recommend for every Galaxy Z Fold. Use the current menu labels on your phone and change only the setting that corresponds to the symptom you are seeing.

YouTube’s pinch gesture changes the framing of the current video and may crop it. Settings > Display > Full screen apps changes how the YouTube app window is presented. Use the first for unused space around a video and the second when the whole interface is constrained.

Why is YouTube arranged differently when my Fold is half open?
A partially folded phone can activate Flex mode, which adapts supported apps and controls to that posture. Review Settings > Advanced features > Flex mode panel. Flex mode does not remove embedded video bars or correct every third-party layout.
I cannot find Customized App Aspect Ratios. Is something wrong?
That menu came from Samsung’s One UI 3.1.1-era guidance for the original Galaxy Fold, Z Fold2 and Z Fold3. It is not a universal current path. Check Full screen apps and the current Labs options on your own model and software build.
What should I do if YouTube refreshes every time I fold the phone?
For the continuity-refresh symptom documented after Android 16 upgrades, open Settings > Display > Screen layout and zoom, change Screen zoom once, return it to the preferred value, then test folding and unfolding. Check for software updates if it continues.

Can a stand or screen protector fix YouTube’s layout?
No physical accessory changes the video’s aspect ratio or Samsung’s app-scaling behavior. A stand can hold the phone in Flex mode, but it does not correct framing or app compatibility.
The Bottom Line
Start by separating video framing from app layout. Pinch the playing video to fill more space, use Full screen apps when the YouTube window is constrained, and use Flex mode only for a partially folded posture. Treat Labs options as experimental, remember that creator-added bars cannot be removed, and use the Screen zoom reset only for a fold/unfold refresh problem.
