If YouTube will not keep your chosen speed, first test the same control on another video and on another supported playback environment. On desktop or supported mobile playback, open the video, select Settings > Speed, and choose a rate. If the control is absent, unavailable on your television or streaming device, or returns to 1x, update YouTube, your browser, and device software; close and reopen the app or browser; restart the device; clear the YouTube cache on Android; then test another browser, network, or device. A repeatable failure should be reported through YouTube’s Help and feedback menu with the exact device, versions, video and action that trigger the reset.
Start with a two-minute diagnosis
Playback-speed problems have different causes. A missing control on a smart TV is usually a platform limitation, while a speed that resets only after a particular gesture may be a browser or app bug. Use this matrix before changing settings:

Set playback speed correctly
Desktop browser
- Open the video on YouTube.
- Hover over the player and click the Settings gear.
- Click Speed.
- Select the rate you want.
These labels match YouTube Help’s documented path: “Go to a video,” “Hover over the player and click Settings,” “Click Speed,” and “Select the speed at which you’d like the video to be played.” If Speed does not appear, continue with the device and scope checks below rather than repeatedly clicking the gear.

- Open the video in the current YouTube app.
- Tap the player’s gear icon.
- Tap Speed and select a rate.
Menu wording and placement can vary with app releases, but the control should be inside the player settings on supported mobile playback. If it appears briefly and then returns to 1x, reproduce the reset once and record whether it follows a seek, pause, screen rotation, navigation, or a touch-and-hold gesture.

Smart TV or streaming device
Do not assume that a missing control is a malfunction. YouTube states that playback speed may not be available on some smart TVs and streaming devices. Check the device’s current YouTube app and documentation; then test the same account and video on a desktop browser or supported phone. If speed works there, the television or streamer is the limiting platform, not a setting you can unlock with cache clearing.
Follow this troubleshooting sequence
1. Verify the platform and control
Identify exactly where playback occurs: desktop browser, mobile app, mobile browser, smart TV, game console, set-top box, or another streamer. On a supported desktop or mobile player, open Settings > Speed. On a TV or streamer, first establish whether that platform supports speed control. This prevents spending time on browser fixes for a feature the device does not provide.
2. Test a second video
Play a different video and select the same rate. If only one video fails, note its URL and title and treat the issue as content- or player-specific. If every video fails, continue with software and environment checks. This simple comparison narrows the fault without changing your account or deleting data.
3. Refresh the software path
- Install any available update for the YouTube app.
- Update the desktop or mobile browser you use for YouTube.
- Install pending operating-system or device-firmware updates.
- Close and reopen the app or browser completely.
- Close unnecessary browser tabs and resource-heavy applications.
- Restart the phone, computer, TV, or streaming device.
A full restart clears temporary player state that can survive a tab refresh. Reducing excess tabs also removes memory pressure that can cause a player to reload while you are watching.

4. Clear the YouTube cache on Android
Use Android’s app settings, not the YouTube player menu:
- Open the device’s Settings.
- Tap Apps (the label may be Apps & notifications on some releases).
- Select YouTube.
- Tap Storage & cache.
- Tap Clear cache, then reopen YouTube and test two videos.
Clearing cache removes temporary files; it does not normally remove your Google account or subscriptions. Do not use Clear storage unless you are prepared to reset the app’s local data and sign in again.
5. Change one environment at a time
Run controlled comparisons so you know which change mattered:

- Use another current browser on the same computer.
- Compare the browser with the YouTube app on the same phone.
- Try another supported device while signed in to the same account.
If the speed works on another browser, the original browser’s profile, extensions, or cached site state is suspect. If it fails on every browser and device, a temporary YouTube service or account issue becomes more plausible. If it fails only on one network, investigate that network’s filtering or instability after confirming the control itself is available.

6. Reproduce and isolate browser-specific behavior
Use the exact action that causes the reset: changing speed, seeking, pausing, entering full-screen, rotating the phone, or holding a finger on the player for temporary 2x playback. Test that action in a second browser and in the app. A documented Brave mobile-browser issue, for example, described playback returning to 1x after touch-and-hold 2x playback while the same behavior did not occur in the YouTube app. That report supports a browser-specific explanation for some cases; it is not evidence that every YouTube reset has the same cause.
Temporarily disable nonessential extensions in the affected desktop browser and retry in a private window. If the private-window test succeeds, re-enable extensions one at a time to identify an interfering extension. Keep this test separate from account changes so you do not lose the evidence of what fixed the problem.
7. Send a useful report if the failure remains
Immediately after reproducing the problem, open your YouTube profile menu and choose Help and feedback > Send Feedback. Include:

- Device model and operating-system version.
- YouTube app version or browser name and version.
- The video URL and whether another video behaves normally.
- Selected speed and the speed shown after the reset.
- The trigger: refresh, seek, pause, navigation, full-screen, rotation, or touch-and-hold.
- Whether the same account works on another browser, network, or device.
- Approximate time and your region, if the issue appears service-wide.
A report with these details lets YouTube distinguish a missing platform feature from a reproducible player defect.

Platform-specific fixes and limits
Desktop browsers
Desktop playback normally exposes the full gear-menu path. If the menu is incomplete or the chosen rate will not persist, reload after closing extra tabs, update the browser, and test a different current browser. A private-window comparison helps separate browser-profile data and extensions from YouTube itself. If only one browser fails while another works on the same video, keep using the working browser while reporting the reproducible defect; changing the computer or network is unlikely to address a browser-only fault.
Android phones and tablets
Update YouTube through the device’s app store, restart the device, and clear the app cache using the path above. Test both Wi-Fi and mobile data, because a network transition can force a player reload that looks like a speed reset. If the app fails but a current mobile browser works, record the app version and report it rather than repeatedly clearing data.
iPhone and iPad
Install the latest YouTube and iOS/iPadOS updates available for the device, force-close and reopen the app, and restart the device. Compare the app with YouTube in a current browser. iOS does not expose Android’s identical cache menu; avoid deleting the app unless you accept the sign-in and local-data consequences. A report should state the iPhone or iPad model, iOS/iPadOS version, YouTube version, and the exact reset trigger.
Smart TVs and streaming devices
Check whether the model’s YouTube app supports playback speed before troubleshooting. If it does, update the app and device firmware, restart the device, and test another video. If it does not, use a supported phone or computer when variable speed is required. Buying a faster router, changing picture settings, or replacing the television cannot add a control that the platform does not implement.

Why YouTube may be stuck at 1x
Feature availability
The control can be absent because the device category does not support it. This is a capability boundary, not a corrupted preference. Confirm support on the same model and app version before attempting resets.
Temporary app or browser state
A stale player session, cached files, memory pressure, or an extension can reload the player with its default rate. Restarting, updating, reducing tabs, clearing Android cache, and comparing a clean browser context address these causes in that order.
Video- or action-specific bugs
A single video, seek operation, or touch-and-hold gesture can expose a player defect that does not occur elsewhere. Record the trigger and compare platforms; this creates a useful reproduction instead of a vague “speed is broken” report.
Service-side or historical bugs
Android Authority reported on August 6, 2025, that YouTube had acknowledged an Android playback-speed-controls problem and was working on a fix. That is historical evidence, not a guarantee of the current status. If updated software fails across multiple videos and devices, check current YouTube support communications and send feedback with your reproduction details rather than assuming the 2025 incident is still active.
Connection speed: what the 7 Mbps guidance does and does not mean
YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance lists a minimum of 7 Mbps for HD streaming; the page’s publication year is not stated. That figure concerns the connection needed to deliver HD video. It does not establish that insufficient bandwidth causes the playback-speed selector to disappear or reset to 1x. A slow connection can cause buffering or quality changes, so test another network when diagnosing general playback, but do not treat a speed-control reset as proof that your internet plan is too slow.
Choose the fix by scope and intervention

What to record before you escalate
- Write down the selected rate and the rate displayed afterward.
- Note whether the failure occurs immediately or only after a seek, pause, refresh, navigation, rotation, or long press.
- Test one additional video and one additional playback environment.
- Capture the app, browser, operating-system, and device versions.
- Record whether Wi-Fi and mobile data produce different results.
- Include the video URL and a concise sequence another person can repeat.
This record prevents support from treating a platform limitation as a cache problem and makes a genuine bug easier to reproduce.
When the problem is fixed
Confirm the result rather than stopping after one successful click. Play two different videos, select the desired rate, seek forward and backward, pause and resume, and reopen the player. Test the environment in which you normally watch. If the rate survives those actions, keep the app and browser updated and retain the successful troubleshooting detail in case the behavior returns. If it fails again, use the same recorded trigger in your feedback report.
