Most Yale Luna Pro+ failures fall into one of three categories: a depleted rechargeable battery, a Bluetooth or network connection problem, or a deadbolt that is physically binding. Keep the door open while testing so you cannot lock yourself out. First check the thumbturn and mechanical key. If the bolt is stiff, correct alignment before repeatedly running the motor. If the lock moves freely, charge the lithium battery with a 5V2A charger, restore Bluetooth proximity, and observe the three-minute credential lockout after five failed attempts.
Start with a safe diagnosis
Keep the door open throughout the first tests. This prevents a partially working lock from leaving you outside and lets you separate an electronic fault from a door, frame, or striker fault. Have the mechanical key available before removing the battery or restarting the lock.
- Turn the inside thumbturn by hand. It should move smoothly through the complete locking and unlocking range, without grinding, catching, or requiring unusual force.
- Use the mechanical key override. If the key or thumbturn is difficult, stops near the frame, or feels loaded only when the door is closed, treat the problem as mechanical first.
- Try one known-good electronic credential with the door open. Do not keep entering a PIN, fingerprint, FaceScan, or CPU card after several rejections.
- Check the app locally. Stand close to the lock with Bluetooth enabled before investigating remote access, a Wi-Fi bridge, or an access module.
- Note exactly what fails. A low-battery warning, an app that says offline, an accepted credential followed by a stalled bolt, and a rejected credential are different failure paths.
Yale support identifies low battery, lost connectivity, physical obstruction, and motor calibration as common causes of an unresponsive lock. The symptom-to-action table below keeps those causes separate.

Fixing Yale Luna Pro+ battery drain
Know the Pro+ battery and charging figures
The Luna Pro+ is powered by a rechargeable lithium battery. Yale Home’s 2026 Luna Pro/Pro+ manual specifies approximately six to eight hours of charging with a 5V2A charger. It estimates six to eight months per full charge, but actual life varies with use. Frequent motor cycles, repeated stalled attempts, biometric activity, and connectivity retries can shorten that period.

Those figures describe normal charging and an estimated interval, not a guarantee. A lock used many times each day or repeatedly forced against a misaligned strike can consume power much faster. Compare your result with the conditions in which the lock is operating before assuming the battery pack has failed.
Do not apply the AA-battery instructions from the Luna Pro documentation to the Pro+. The Pro+ uses its compatible lithium pack. Follow the exact regional manual for removing the cover, charging the pack, and seating its connector.
Charge or replace the battery correctly
- Open the door and unlock it mechanically if necessary. Do not begin a battery procedure with the door closed and no backup access.
- Remove the battery cover. Inspect the pack, connector, and cable for a loose fit, contamination, or visible damage. Do not use a damaged pack or connector.
- Charge the installed pack or fit a fully charged compatible lithium pack. For normal charging, use a 5V2A charger and allow roughly six to eight hours.
- Reseat the connector and battery. A partially seated pack can mimic rapid drain, intermittent shutdowns, or a lock that appears offline.
- Replace the cover and test locally. Run one app command and one physical credential cycle with the door open.
- Record the result. Note when charging ended, whether the low-battery warning cleared, and whether the motor completed a full cycle.
A battery that reaches a full charge but drops rapidly again is not necessarily defective. A misaligned door can make the motor stall repeatedly, while a failed bridge or unstable Bluetooth session can cause repeated connection attempts. Correct those conditions before judging the pack.
Use emergency USB-C power only to get in
The manual distinguishes normal charging from emergency access. If the internal battery is critically depleted, temporary power can be supplied through the lock’s emergency power-supply port with a USB-C cable. Yale describes this port as for emergency access, not for charging. Use it to operate the lock, then restore or replace the internal battery through the normal battery procedure.
Do not treat the emergency port as a way to replenish the internal pack. If the lock opens on temporary power, remove that temporary connection after access and charge the installed battery correctly. Continuing to rely on emergency power leaves the underlying low-battery condition unresolved.
Keep the mechanical key override outside the property, as Yale recommends. Emergency power and a spare key solve different failure modes: USB-C power helps when the electronics have no energy, while the key remains useful when the motor, calibration, alignment, or credentials are at fault.

Investigate drain that returns after a full charge
- Check for motor stalls. With the door open, lock and unlock using the thumbturn. If movement is smooth open but binds when the door is closed, inspect the strike and door position.
- Look for repeated connectivity retries. An unstable Bluetooth session or offline bridge can make the system reconnect repeatedly.
- Confirm the pack is seated. Remove and reinstall it while the cover is open, following the regional manual.
- Check for a changed door. Seasonal swelling, sagging, frame work, or a shifted strike can increase motor load even when the lock worked previously.
- Observe the low-battery warning after replacement. Yale support says a low-battery alert that remains for 24 hours after replacement, while the app operates, should be referred to regional support.
A figure of about 50 operations after a low-battery reminder appears in a 2022 Luna Pro document. It is not a guaranteed Pro+ reserve and should not replace prompt charging. Treat the warning as a request to charge, not as a countdown on which to plan continued use.

Recovering from an offline or unresponsive app
Separate local Bluetooth control from remote access
First determine whether the lock itself is offline or only the remote path. Stand within approximately 10 feet (3 m), turn Bluetooth on, and try the Yale Access app. If local control works but remote commands or activity updates do not, inspect the installed Wi-Fi bridge or access module. A bridge outage can make the app appear offline even while nearby Bluetooth control continues to work.
This distinction prevents an unnecessary lock reset. If local Bluetooth works, the lock has power and is responding over its short-range link; focus on the phone, bridge, access module, or network path. If local Bluetooth also fails, return to the battery, reboot, and calibration checks.
Follow Yale’s connection sequence
- Move close to the lock. Remain within about 10 feet (3 m) during the test.
- Enable Bluetooth on the phone. If it is already enabled, turn it off and back on.
- Confirm the Yale Access app is current. Use the version available for your phone rather than an obsolete installation.
- Force-quit the app. Remove it from the phone’s recent-app view, reopen it, and retry.
- Try one local command. Avoid sending repeated commands while the app is reconnecting.
- Remove the lock’s battery or power source. Wait briefly, reinstall it, and allow it to boot fully.
- Recalibrate when calibration is suspected. In the app, open Device Settings and use the recalibration function, following the on-screen prompts with the door open.
- Check the bridge or access module. Verify that it has power and an internet connection before testing remote control again.
Rebooting the lock is different from recalibrating it. A reboot clears a temporary system state; calibration teaches the motor the correct bolt travel. Perform either operation with a physical access method available.
When the app remains offline
- If Bluetooth control fails even at close range, concentrate on battery seating, power, reboot, and calibration.
- If Bluetooth works but remote access fails, concentrate on the Wi-Fi bridge or access module and its network connection.
- If the app works after force-quitting but fails again, avoid rapid repeated commands and check phone Bluetooth behavior before changing the lock’s installation.
- If the lock is offline only at a distance, do not mistake the result for a dead battery; local and remote paths have different dependencies.
Fixing failed unlocks and the three-minute lockout
Wait out a credential lockout
The Luna manual states that five failed FaceScan, fingerprint, CPU-card, or PIN attempts accumulated within three minutes trigger a three-minute lockout. Stop entering credentials as soon as the lockout starts. Wait the full period, then try one known-good credential with the door open.
Entering more credentials during the timeout does not speed recovery. If access is urgent, use an authorized mechanical method, such as the key override, rather than attempting to defeat the lock. Keep the key outside the property before an emergency occurs.

After the timeout, avoid testing every credential at once. Start with the method you know is valid, then test other configured methods individually. This prevents a second burst of failed attempts and shows whether the issue concerns one credential type or the lock as a whole.
When the credential works but the bolt does not move
An accepted credential proves that authentication succeeded; it does not prove that the bolt can travel. Inspect the door gap, strike opening, and frame for pressure or deformation. A bolt that retracts with the door open but stalls when closed is being loaded by alignment, not rejected by the credential system.
Adjust the striker plate or correct the door position so the deadbolt enters and leaves the opening without rubbing. Test several complete cycles with the door open before closing it. Do not repeatedly force the motor against a binding strike, because those stalls can also accelerate battery drain.
Retest every authorized method
After the timeout or an alignment repair, test one method at a time: app/Bluetooth, keypad PIN, fingerprint or FaceScan where configured, CPU card, thumbturn, and mechanical key. Testing separately identifies whether the fault is authentication-specific or mechanical. Keep the door open until all required methods operate normally.
Use the system restart when the lock reports an error
The Luna guide says that if a system error prevents operation, use a tool to press the system restart button for a reboot. Treat this as a controlled recovery, not a substitute for fixing a binding door or depleted battery.
- Open the door and keep the mechanical key and an authorized credential available.
- Restore adequate battery power or connect temporary emergency power if you are recovering access.
- Press the system restart button with the appropriate tool.
- Wait for the lock to complete its boot sequence.
- Test the app, keypad or biometric method, thumbturn, and key override separately.
- If operation remains abnormal, run recalibration from Device Settings and repeat the open-door tests.
Do not press the restart control repeatedly while the lock is trying to boot. Give it time to return to a stable state, then perform one deliberate test per access method.

Correct door and striker alignment
Signs of a mechanical binding problem
- The thumbturn is stiff only when the door is closed.
- The motor sounds as if it starts but stops before the bolt reaches the end of travel.
- The bolt rubs the strike, frame, or weather seal.
- The door has shifted, swollen, sagged, or become deformed.
- The key override is difficult even though the credential is accepted.
Open-door testing removes frame pressure. If the lock cycles normally open but not closed, adjust the strike or correct the door rather than replacing electronic parts first. The goal is smooth, complete bolt travel without pushing or pulling the door.

Use the installation acceptance checklist
After installation or adjustment, Yale’s acceptance checks cover more than one unlock attempt. Verify:
- Deadbolt extension and retraction with the door open and closed.
- Thumbturn movement through its full range.
- Mechanical key override.
- Every configured credential type.
- App and Bluetooth operation.
- Any networking or access module.
- Door and striker alignment under normal closing pressure.
Run this checklist after frame work, a strike adjustment, a battery replacement, or calibration. A lock that passes only with the door held in a particular position is not fully corrected.

| Normal low-battery warning and the door still opens | Charge the lithium pack for approximately six to eight hours with a 5V2A charger. | This restores normal operation rather than relying on emergency access. |
| Battery critically depleted and entry is needed now | Use the emergency USB-C power port for temporary access, then charge or replace the internal pack. | The port is specified for emergency access, not charging. |
| App offline but local Bluetooth works | Check the Wi-Fi bridge or access module and its network connection. | The lock and local link are functioning; the remote path is the likely fault. |
| Credential accepted but bolt stalls | Correct the door or striker alignment. | Authentication succeeded, but physical resistance prevents travel. |
| Five failed credentials in three minutes | Wait three minutes or use an authorized mechanical method. | The lockout is a security feature and cannot be bypassed by more entries. |
| System error remains after power and alignment checks | Restart, recalibrate if needed, and contact regional Yale support if the fault persists. | Persistent electronic or calibration faults need support diagnosis. |
When to escalate to Yale support
Contact regional Yale support after the prescribed sequence fails, especially when a low-battery alert persists for 24 hours after a correct replacement and the app itself operates. Escalation is also appropriate when the battery or connector is damaged, the lock cannot cycle with the door open, the restart button does not restore operation, or calibration repeatedly fails.
Before contacting support, record the symptom, whether the bolt moves with the door open, the result of the key override, the last full-charge time, whether local Bluetooth works, and whether a bridge or access module is installed. This information lets support distinguish power, mechanics, authentication, and networking without repeated trial-and-error.

How long should a full Luna Pro+ charge last?
The manual estimates six to eight months per full charge, depending on actual usage. Frequent cycles, motor stalls, and connection retries can shorten that interval.
Can I use AA batteries in the Luna Pro+?
No. The Pro+ uses a compatible rechargeable lithium battery. AA guidance in Luna Pro documentation does not apply to the Pro+.
What is the USB-C emergency port for?
It supplies temporary power for emergency access when the internal battery is critically depleted. Yale specifies that it is not for charging the internal battery.
Why does the app say offline when the lock works nearby?
Local Bluetooth may still be working while a Wi-Fi bridge or access module is offline. Test within about 10 feet (3 m) with Bluetooth enabled, then check the bridge and its internet connection.
How many failed attempts cause a Luna lockout?
Five failed FaceScan, fingerprint, CPU-card, or PIN attempts within three minutes trigger a three-minute lockout. Wait for the full timeout before trying one known-good credential.
Why is my credential accepted but the door will not unlock?
Authentication may have succeeded while the bolt is binding against the strike or a deformed door. Test with the door open and correct the striker or alignment if the bolt moves freely unloaded.
When should I contact Yale support?
Escalate when a low-battery alert remains 24 hours after replacement while the app operates, when the lock cannot cycle with the door open, when the restart or recalibration sequence fails, or when the battery or connector is damaged.
The Bottom Line
Diagnose the Luna Pro+ in this order: test the bolt with the door open, charge the rechargeable lithium pack correctly, restore close-range Bluetooth, and check the bridge only when local control works. Respect the three-minute lockout after five failed credentials. Use USB-C emergency power only for temporary entry, correct striker alignment when the bolt binds, and escalate persistent battery, calibration, or system faults to regional Yale support.
