A missing Game Pass game usually has one of three explanations: the membership or signed-in account no longer has catalog access, the title is unavailable on that device, or the Xbox app is failing to display or recognize an installation. Check those possibilities in that order. Do not assume that a vanished listing means the game files were deleted.

Start with the two checks that explain most disappearances

Confirm the Microsoft account and membership

Installing a Game Pass title does not convert it into a permanent purchase. Access continues only while the signed-in Microsoft account has the relevant membership and the game remains included in that membership’s catalog. If the subscription ended, changed tier, was attached to another account, or the title left the catalog, the game can stop launching or disappear from the available library even though it was previously installed.

  • Check the account shown in the Xbox app.
  • Check the account shown in Microsoft Store.
  • Make sure that account is the one associated with the active Game Pass membership.
  • Verify that the title is still listed in the current Game Pass catalog and that your membership tier includes it.

When more than one Microsoft account is used on the PC, compare the account identity carefully rather than assuming the Xbox app and Store are using the same sign-in. Microsoft Q&A guidance identifies account and subscription recognition as a common cause, but account switching is not a guaranteed fix by itself.

Check whether the game is available for your device

Game availability can differ by device. A title may be included for console but not Windows PC, or may require a different edition or platform entitlement. Microsoft’s Store guidance says to verify the account and the target device when an item cannot be found. A catalog page that exists somewhere else does not prove that the Windows installation is entitled to it.

Understand what “disappeared” means on Windows

The Xbox PC app can present an aggregated gaming library. Xbox described this library as a single view that can bring together Xbox, Game Pass, Battle.net and other supported PC storefront titles. That design means a missing tile is not conclusive evidence that the underlying files were removed. The app may be presenting a different filtered view, may not have recognized an installation, or may be showing a catalog state that changed after the last synchronization.

Separate these questions before changing anything:

Question What it tells you
Is the membership active for this account? Whether the account is entitled to subscription access.
Is the title still in the catalog for this device? Whether the game can currently be installed or launched through Game Pass.
Does Microsoft Store find the title? Whether Store can identify the product and its device availability.
Does the Xbox app show an installation elsewhere in its aggregated library? Whether the problem is likely a view or recognition issue rather than deleted files.
Can the game be launched from an existing shortcut or installation entry? Whether the files and registration are still usable even if the library tile is missing.

Do not delete a protected game folder merely because its tile vanished. None of the Microsoft guidance summarized here requires deleting protected folders or running unverified PowerShell commands.

Windows fix: follow this diagnostic order

1. Recheck both app sign-ins

  1. Open the Xbox app and note the Microsoft account currently signed in.
  2. Open Microsoft Store and note its signed-in account.
  3. Compare the two accounts with the account that owns the Game Pass membership.
  4. If they differ, use the account associated with the membership for the entitlement check. Change only one account at a time so you can tell which change affected the result.

The available Microsoft Q&A guidance supports checking account and subscription recognition, but it does not establish one universal account-switching procedure for every Windows release. Menu names and sign-in prompts can therefore differ.

2. Verify the title in the current Game Pass catalog

Search the title in the current Game Pass catalog while signed in to the membership account. Confirm both the exact game and the edition. Games with similar names can have separate PC, console, cloud, standard and deluxe listings. If the title has left the catalog, a missing library entry is an access change, not an Xbox app display fault. If the catalog page says the game is not available for Windows, reinstalling the app will not create a PC entitlement.

3. Search Microsoft Store and inspect its library

Microsoft’s Store instructions recommend searching for an app or game in Microsoft Store and checking the Store library. Use that as an independent cross-check:

  1. Open Microsoft Store.
  2. Search for the exact game title.
  3. Open the matching product page and check the device and account context.
  4. Open the Store library and look for the title among owned, installed or available items.

If Store cannot find the product for the signed-in account and intended device, treat that as an availability or entitlement problem first. If Store can find it while the Xbox app cannot, the discrepancy points toward Xbox app presentation, synchronization or recognition rather than a catalog removal.

4. Check every relevant view in the Xbox PC app

Because the PC app can aggregate multiple storefronts, a game may not appear in the view you normally use. Look through the app’s library areas and any filters that separate installed, Game Pass, Xbox, or other storefront games. The precise labels can change as the app is updated, so focus on whether the title appears in another library category, not on one fixed menu name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the game appears in an alternate view, open it and check whether the app offers launch, install, update or locate actions. A listing in another section is evidence that the app knows about the product; it does not by itself prove that the files are complete or that the membership still grants access.

5. Test the existing installation before reinstalling

If the game was installed, check whether an existing shortcut, Start-menu entry or other launcher can open it. A successful launch indicates that the files may still be present even though the library presentation is wrong. A failed launch should be recorded along with the exact message, because an entitlement error and a missing-file error require different next steps.

Do not move, rename or delete protected installation folders while diagnosing the listing. Those actions can turn a display problem into a genuine installation problem and can make a later repair or reinstall harder.

6. Repair the Xbox app, then reset it only if necessary

Microsoft’s general Store troubleshooting guidance includes repairing or resetting apps. In Windows app settings, open the Xbox app’s options and use Repair first when that option is available. Repair is the less disruptive choice because it attempts to correct the app without removing its stored state. Reopen the Xbox app and repeat the catalog and library checks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Repair does not help, use Reset from the same app-options page. Windows warns that resetting an app can remove its local app data and sign-in state, so expect to sign in again and recheck the account afterward. Resetting the app does not restore a title that has left the Game Pass catalog; it only addresses local app state.

Windows versions use slightly different settings labels. If you cannot find the options, search Windows Settings for the Xbox app’s installed-app entry and open its advanced options rather than following a menu path from a different release.

7. Reinstall from Microsoft Store library when the app remains broken

Microsoft’s Store guidance also supports reinstalling through the Store library. Use that route when the title is still available to the correct account and device but the Xbox app cannot produce a working installation entry.

  1. Confirm the title is still listed for the membership account and Windows device.
  2. Open Microsoft Store’s library and select the game.
  3. Choose the available install or reinstall action.
  4. Allow the installation to finish before opening the Xbox app again.
  5. Check whether the title now appears in the Xbox library and whether it launches.

A reinstall can require substantial download time and disk space. It is not an appropriate response to a catalog removal or an account mismatch, so perform the entitlement checks first.

8. Consider Gaming Services only as community-suggested troubleshooting

A Microsoft Q&A response about subscription recognition suggests repairing or resetting the Xbox app and checking Gaming Services. This is community guidance, not a guaranteed Microsoft fix or an official promise that changing Gaming Services will restore a missing game. If the Xbox app reports that a valid membership is missing after the account and catalog checks, you can inspect Gaming Services using Windows’ installed-app troubleshooting controls, then restart the Xbox app and test again.

Store finds the game, but the Xbox app library does not. Xbox app view, synchronization or recognition. Check alternate library views, then Repair and, if needed, Reset the Xbox app.
The game appears in another aggregated-library section. Presentation or storefront grouping. Open that entry and check its launch, install or update state.
An existing shortcut opens the game. The files may still be present despite a missing tile. Keep the installation intact and troubleshoot the library display rather than deleting folders.
The Xbox app says the membership is missing even though it is active. Account recognition or local app services. Compare sign-ins, Repair or Reset the Xbox app, and treat Gaming Services checks as community guidance.
The title is missing on an Xbox console. Console-specific account, catalog or installation state. Verify membership and catalog access, then use current Xbox Support instructions for the console.

What to do when you use an Xbox console

The Windows procedure above should not be copied to a console. The available support pages for console troubleshooting opened as JavaScript-only pages, so an exact, current console menu sequence cannot be substantiated here. Console users should verify the membership account and whether the title remains in the applicable catalog, then consult current Xbox Support for the device-specific library and installation procedure.

Do not assume that repairing a Windows app, resetting Windows app data or checking Windows Gaming Services will alter a console library. Those are separate platforms with different account and installation controls. If the game is available on PC but not on the console, check the platform listing and edition rather than treating the difference as proof of a broken console.

How to tell an access change from a deleted installation

Signs of an access or catalog change

  • The game is no longer shown as included for the membership account.
  • The membership is inactive, attached to another account, or does not include the required platform.
  • Store and Xbox both identify the title as unavailable for the intended device.

These conditions require an account, membership or catalog decision. App repair cannot grant an entitlement that is not present.

Signs of a Windows library or recognition problem

  • Microsoft Store can find the title for the correct account and device.
  • The title appears in another section of the Xbox PC app’s aggregated library.
  • An existing shortcut or installation entry still reaches the game.
  • Repairing or resetting the Xbox app changes the listing without changing catalog status.

These signs justify app-level troubleshooting before any destructive file operation.

Common mistakes that make recovery harder

  • Assuming installation equals ownership: A downloaded Game Pass title remains subject to membership and catalog rules.
  • Checking only the Xbox app: Microsoft Store provides a separate account, product and device check.
  • Using a console guide on Windows: Console and PC library controls are not interchangeable.
  • Deleting protected folders: A missing tile can be a presentation issue, and deletion can remove a still-usable installation.
  • Running unverified commands: Scripts that alter permissions or services are not part of the supported steps summarized here.
  • Reinstalling before checking entitlement: A large download cannot fix a title that is no longer in the catalog or is unavailable for the device.
  • Treating community advice as a guarantee: Gaming Services checks come from Microsoft Q&A community guidance and may not resolve every recognition failure.

A compact recovery checklist

  1. Compare the Xbox app and Microsoft Store accounts with the account that holds the membership.
  2. Confirm the membership is active and includes the game’s platform and edition.
  3. Check the current Game Pass catalog.
  4. Search Microsoft Store and inspect its library on the intended device.
  5. Review alternate sections and filters in the Xbox PC app’s aggregated library.
  6. Test an existing shortcut or installation entry without deleting files.
  7. Use Windows app Repair, then Reset if Repair fails.
  8. Reinstall from Microsoft Store library only after entitlement and device availability are confirmed.
  9. If subscription recognition remains wrong, consider the community-suggested Gaming Services check, without treating it as a guaranteed fix.
  10. For a console, stop using the Windows path and follow current Xbox Support instructions for that console.

The Bottom Line

Check account, membership and catalog status first; use Microsoft Store to verify the Windows product; then treat the Xbox PC app as a display or recognition layer and repair it before reinstalling. Console troubleshooting requires current Xbox Support steps rather than copied Windows instructions.
