First identify where the failure occurs: an Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S console, or a Windows PC using the Xbox app or Microsoft Store. The messages may look similar, but the fixes are different. Record the complete wording and any code—especially codes beginning with 0x—before changing settings.

For Windows, work from low-risk checks (account, entitlement, updates, restart and storage) toward app repair and Gaming Services recovery. Console installs are model- and code-specific, so use the current Xbox Support guidance for your generation rather than applying PC procedures to a console.

Start by identifying the platform and exact symptom

An “Xbox game won’t install” problem can mean several different things: the title is unavailable, the download never begins, progress stops at a percentage, Windows reports that Gaming Services is required, or an “Installation stopped” message appears. Each points to a different branch of troubleshooting.

Console or Windows PC?

Where you are installing Use this article’s guidance Do not assume
Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S Use the console section and the current Xbox Support article for the exact console generation and error code. Windows Xbox-app commands such as wsreset.exe repair a console installation.
Windows 10 or Windows 11 through the Xbox app Follow the Windows sequence below, including account, Game Pass, drive and Gaming Services checks. A console storage or power-cycle procedure applies to Windows.
Windows through Microsoft Store Use the Store update, reset, repair and reinstall steps, then retry from the Store or Xbox app that owns the installation. The Xbox app and Store always have identical entitlement or destination settings.

Record the failure before changing anything

  • Copy the full error text and code. Search the exact code in Microsoft’s Xbox error-code guidance rather than guessing what a number means; Microsoft’s PC material notes that these codes generally begin with 0x (Microsoft’s app troubleshooting guidance).
  • Note whether the download never starts, stops at a percentage, says “Installation stopped,” or redirects you to install Gaming Services.
  • Write down the game, the app used (Xbox or Microsoft Store), your Windows version, and the drive selected for the game.
  • If the title is from Game Pass, note which Microsoft account is signed in and whether the PC is online.

Run the low-risk checks first

Confirm the account and entitlement

Sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the game or the active Game Pass subscription. The account must be signed in to the app or Store actually performing the install. For a Game Pass title, verify that the plan is current and that Windows is connected to the internet. A stale sign-in can leave a game visible but make the install button unavailable, or can stop validation after a download has begun.

Check why a game may be unavailable

If the title cannot be found, the install button is missing, or the Store says the device is not eligible, Microsoft lists several possible causes: regional availability, family settings, the app or game having been removed from the Store, device incompatibility, a recent update that still requires a restart, or authorization limits on the device. Check those conditions before treating the problem as a broken download. Microsoft’s availability guidance is in I can’t find or install an app from Microsoft Store.

Close, update and restart

  1. Close the Xbox app and Microsoft Store completely, then open only the app you intend to use for the installation.
  2. In Microsoft Store, open the Library section and install available app updates. Also install pending Windows updates.
  3. If Windows installed an update recently, restart the PC before trying the game again. A restart can complete servicing work that otherwise leaves Store or Gaming Services in an inconsistent state.
  4. Retry the installation once and observe whether the symptom changes. Do not repeatedly cancel and restart while you are still determining the cause.

Microsoft’s Store guidance recommends closing and reopening the app, applying updates and restarting as part of initial troubleshooting (Microsoft Support). A Microsoft Flight Simulator support guide likewise advises retrying a download error; after a Game Pass restart, returning to the game’s details page may allow a partial download to resume (Windows Xbox-app installation troubleshooting).

Windows: check storage and the destination drive

Verify actual free space

Low storage can prevent an installation from completing even when the download begins normally. Check the free space on the drive selected for the game and leave room for temporary files and updates. If the drive is nearly full, remove or move data you no longer need, or select another drive with sufficient capacity. Buying another drive is not a general Xbox fix; it is relevant only after you have verified a capacity problem.

Set up a drive that Windows says is not ready for games

The Xbox app can let you choose the hard drive for content. If Windows reports that the selected drive is not set up for game installs, change the default app destination:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System, then Storage.
  3. Open Advanced storage settings and choose Where new content is saved (the wording may appear as Change where new content is saved).
  4. Under New apps will be saved to, select the drive you want to use.
  5. Return to the Xbox app, choose that drive in the game’s installation options and retry.

This setting addresses a destination configuration problem; it does not repair an account, Store or Gaming Services error. If the game installs on the system drive but not on a secondary drive, compare the drive’s free space and Windows’ destination setting before changing anything else.

Repair Microsoft Store and Xbox app components

Reset the Microsoft Store cache with wsreset.exe

Use this when Store pages fail to load, downloads remain queued, or the Store behaves as though an update is missing:

  1. Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.
  2. Enter wsreset.exe and select OK.
  3. A blank command window appears. Wait for it to close and for Microsoft Store to open automatically.
  4. Sign in again if necessary, then retry the installation.

Do not close the blank window while it is working. This procedure resets the Store cache; it does not remove your installed games or change the Windows account. Microsoft documents it alongside Store repair options in Fix problems with apps from Microsoft Store.

Use Windows’ Repair, Reset or Reinstall options

When one app is failing while other Store downloads work, repair that app rather than changing the whole system:

  1. Open Settings and go to Apps > Installed apps (Windows 11) or Apps & features (Windows 10).
  2. Find Xbox or Microsoft Store, open its additional options, and choose Advanced options where available.
  3. Select Repair first. This attempts to fix the app without deleting its data.
  4. Retry the game. If the failure remains, return to the same page and consider Reset, understanding that app data and sign-in state may be cleared.
  5. If Microsoft’s current troubleshooting page offers a reinstall path for the affected app, use that documented path and then sign in again.

Repair is the reversible step; reset and reinstall are more disruptive. Keep the exact error code available so you can compare the result after each change.

Fix Gaming Services errors on Windows

Recognize the Gaming Services branch

Follow this branch when the Xbox app says Gaming Services is required, repeatedly redirects you to a Microsoft Store Gaming Services page, or displays a related error instead of downloading the game. Microsoft describes the Windows 10 symptom this way: “When you try to install or start an Xbox Game Pass game on your Windows 10 device, you may be redirected to the Microsoft Store page for Gaming Services.” That statement comes from Microsoft Support’s KB5004327 article, which addresses errors 0x80073D26 and 0x8007139F (KB5004327).

Prefer the current Gaming Services Repair Tool

For a persistent Gaming Services message, use the Gaming Services Repair Tool exposed through the Xbox app’s support flow. Follow the prompts, allow it to make the requested component changes, restart Windows if prompted, and retry the game. A Microsoft Flight Simulator support document says the PC Xbox app must be version 2311.1001.7.0 or newer to run that tool. Because app requirements can change, update the Xbox app and confirm the tool’s current prerequisite in the support flow before relying on that version number (installation troubleshooting guide).

Use the older package-removal workaround only for a matching code

KB5004327 documents a technical workaround for Windows 10 errors 0x80073D26 and 0x8007139F. It removes Gaming Services packages, restarts the device and reinstalls Gaming Services from the Xbox app. This is not a universal “Xbox games stopped installing” cure. Do not run package-removal commands merely because a download is slow or storage is low. First confirm that the exact error and Windows version match Microsoft’s article, try the safer app repair and Gaming Services Repair Tool options, and follow the KB’s current instructions exactly. If your code differs, use the exact-code support path instead of adapting commands from an unrelated error.

Match the action to the failure

Observed symptom Most useful next action Escalate when
Game is missing or Install is unavailable Check account, Game Pass status, internet connection, region, family settings, device compatibility and Store authorization. The title remains unavailable after those checks; consult Microsoft’s Store availability guidance.
Download never starts or stays queued Close and reopen the app, update Windows and Store, restart, then use wsreset.exe if Store behavior is abnormal. Only one app fails after cache reset; use that app’s Repair option.
Progress stops at a percentage or says “Installation stopped” Check free space and the selected drive, confirm the drive is configured under New apps will be saved to, then retry. The drive has capacity and is configured correctly but the same code returns.
Message says Gaming Services is required Update the Xbox app and run the Gaming Services Repair Tool. The tool fails or the error matches KB5004327’s documented Windows 10 codes; follow the matching Microsoft procedure.
An error code beginning with 0x Search the complete code in official Xbox or Microsoft Support documentation. Do not substitute a registry, PowerShell or package-removal fix without a code-specific Microsoft instruction.

Console installs: use generation-specific support

Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S installations have their own storage, account, network and system-software behavior. The console help pages for preparing games and paused or stopped downloads are model-specific, and the available browser material does not expose their full instructions. For that reason, do not transplant Windows steps such as wsreset.exe, Windows Storage settings or PC Gaming Services repair to a console.

  1. Record the console model, game, exact message and any error code.
  2. Open the current Xbox Support site and choose the article for your console generation and the exact code or “installation stopped” symptom.
  3. Follow the button sequence and storage instructions in that article, because labels and recovery options can differ between Xbox One and Series X|S.
  4. If the official Xbox status information shows an outage affecting downloads or entitlements, wait for service recovery before repeatedly changing local settings.

Do not buy a console expansion card or external drive solely because an installation failed. Confirm a genuine capacity or compatibility problem in the console-specific support instructions first; the Windows evidence above does not establish console accessory compatibility.

What to avoid while troubleshooting

  • Do not guess from the wording alone. “Installation stopped” can result from storage, entitlement, updates, destination configuration or a service component; the phrase does not identify one universal fix.
  • Do not repeatedly cancel, delete folders or restart the download before checking the account, updates and destination drive. You can discard usable partial data and make diagnosis harder.
  • Do not run registry edits, administrator scripts or PowerShell package removal copied from an unrelated forum. Use a technical workaround only when the exact code, Windows edition and Microsoft instructions match.
  • Do not confuse a Store problem with a game problem. If other Store apps also fail, repair the Store path; if only one Xbox title fails, concentrate on entitlement, compatibility and the game’s destination.
  • Do not assume extra hardware is required. A second drive helps only when verified free-space or destination issues are blocking a Windows PC install.

  1. Identify console versus Windows PC and capture the exact wording and code.
  2. Confirm the Microsoft account, Game Pass entitlement, online connection and device eligibility.
  3. Close and reopen the Xbox app or Store, install pending updates and restart Windows if an update was recently applied.
  4. Check free space and select a correctly configured destination under Settings > System > Storage > Where new content is saved.
  5. For Store symptoms, run wsreset.exe, then retry.
  6. Repair the affected Xbox or Store app; reset or reinstall only if repair does not help and you are prepared to sign in again.
  7. For a Gaming Services message, update the Xbox app and run the Gaming Services Repair Tool.
  8. Only if the exact Windows 10 error is 0x80073D26 or 0x8007139F, consult KB5004327 for its documented package-recovery procedure.
  9. For a console, stop after identifying the code and use the current generation-specific Xbox Support instructions.

If one step changes the error, record that result before proceeding. The new message is often more diagnostic than the original symptom and tells you which support branch to follow.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does wsreset.exe fix every Xbox installation error?

No. It resets the Microsoft Store cache and is appropriate when Store pages or downloads behave incorrectly. It does not fix low disk space, an expired Game Pass plan, an incompatible device or a console installation.

Should I buy another hard drive when an Xbox PC game will not install?

Only after confirming that the selected Windows drive lacks capacity or is not configured for apps. You may solve the issue by freeing space or changing New apps will be saved to; hardware is not a general fix.

What should I do with an error code that starts with 0x?

Copy the complete code and search it in the official Xbox or Microsoft Support error-code guidance. Different codes can require different fixes, so do not apply a workaround written for another number.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can Windows Gaming Services fixes be used on an Xbox console?

No. Gaming Services repair steps apply to Windows Xbox-app installations. Console installs require the current Xbox Support instructions for the specific Xbox generation and code.
