Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
A 404 at /wp-admin/ usually means WordPress is sending the request to the wrong host, scheme, or path, or the web server cannot route it. Broken rewrite rules, a damaged .htaccess file, disabled Apache mod_rewrite, migration URL values, redirect and proxy conflicts, plugin or theme code, and damaged core files are the usual causes.
Use the response itself as your first clue: a server-branded 404 points to the document root, virtual host, rewrite configuration, or proxy; a WordPress- or theme-branded 404 points more often to URL settings, redirects, extensions, or custom login code. The sequence below starts with reversible checks and moves toward server and file repairs.
First, determine what is actually returning the 404
Open the exact address in a private browser window and note the page design, URL after any redirect, and whether the public site still works. Test both https://example.com/wp-admin/ and https://example.com/wp-login.php, replacing the host and path with your real installation.
| What you see | Most likely area | First checks |
|---|---|---|
| A plain or host-branded 404 | Web-server routing | Document root, virtual host, Apache rewrite support, .htaccess, Nginx or IIS rules, CDN/proxy routing |
| A WordPress- or theme-styled 404 | Application URL or extension logic | home/siteurl, redirects, plugins, themes, custom login URL code |
| Login succeeds, then the browser lands on a 404 | Redirect target or URL mismatch | Scheme, host, subdirectory, cookies, proxy headers, WP_HOME and WP_SITEURL |
| Only one or a few dashboard screens fail | Screen-specific extension or rewrite request | Disable plugins and theme customizations, inspect the failing request and logs |
| The front end also returns 404s | Site-wide routing or migration issue | Canonical URL, rewrite base, server configuration, and database address values |
When logged out, visiting /wp-admin/ normally redirects to wp-login.php. If that redirect never happens, loops, or points to an old domain, treat the redirect as evidence rather than repeatedly retrying the same URL.

Before changing anything
- Record the complete failing URL, including
httporhttps, wwwor non-www, port, and any subdirectory. - Write down the time of the failure and whether it began after a migration, domain change, HTTPS rollout, update, plugin installation, or host change.
- Make a database and file backup before editing
wp-config.php, the options table,.htaccess, or core directories. - Keep a second browser session logged out so you can distinguish login behavior from an authenticated dashboard request.
- Do not delete plugins, themes, or core files as a first step. Renaming a folder is reversible; deletion is not.
Fix the canonical URL and migration paths
After a migration, the most common application-level mistake is a mixture of old and new addresses. WordPress needs one consistent scheme, host, and path. For example, https://www.example.com/blog is not interchangeable with http://example.com or https://example.com.
Check the two address values
In a working dashboard, go to Settings > General and inspect WordPress Address (URL) and Site Address (URL). The WordPress address is where the application files reside; the site address is the public address visitors use. Both must reflect the live scheme, host, and subdirectory.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If the dashboard cannot be opened, inspect wp-config.php for constants such as:
define('WP_HOME', 'https://example.com/blog');
define('WP_SITEURL', 'https://example.com/blog');
Use the real canonical values and preserve the installation’s subdirectory. These constants override the corresponding database values, so changing the database while a conflicting constant remains in place will not solve the problem.
Check the database when constants are absent
In the WordPress options table, verify the home and siteurl rows. The table may have a custom prefix rather than wp_. Both values should match the intended address, including a subdirectory, and should not contain an extra trailing path segment. Change them only after a backup and only when you are certain the database belongs to this installation.
Once the values are corrected, clear browser cookies for the old and new hosts, open the canonical URL in a private window, and test /wp-login.php followed by /wp-admin/. A redirect to an old hostname indicates that another layer—often a proxy, redirect rule, or cached response—is still using the previous address.

Use the direct login endpoint to separate login from dashboard routing
- Open the canonical
/wp-login.phpURL directly. - Sign in with an account that has administrator privileges.
- After authentication, open the canonical
/wp-admin/URL manually rather than relying on a bookmark. - Observe whether the browser changes host, scheme, or path before showing the 404.
If wp-login.php works but the redirect to /wp-admin/ fails, focus on URL values, the subdirectory, HTTPS termination, cookies, and proxy headers. If both endpoints return a server-branded 404, investigate the web root and server rules before changing WordPress settings.
Regenerate rewrite rules from the dashboard
If any dashboard page remains accessible, go to Settings > Permalinks and click Save Changes without changing the selected structure. WordPress flushes its rewrite rules and regenerates the server rules it can manage. This is a low-risk repair for stale rules after a migration or permalink change.
Test the admin URL and one ordinary front-end permalink afterward. If saving permalinks has no effect, the server may be ignoring .htaccess, the file may be unwritable or malformed, or the site may be running on Nginx or IIS, where the Apache file is not used.
Repair Apache .htaccess and verify rewrite support
On Apache installations, WordPress commonly uses a root-level .htaccess file to route pretty URLs. A corrupted file is a frequent cause of 404 responses, even when the home page loads. A host must also permit overrides and have the Apache rewrite module enabled.
Safely test the file
- Connect with SFTP, FTP, or the hosting file manager and enable display of hidden files.
- Download the existing root
.htaccessas a backup, then rename it to something such as.htaccess.backup. Renaming preserves the original for rollback. - If you still have dashboard access, use Settings > Permalinks > Save Changes to let WordPress create a fresh file.
- If you cannot access the dashboard, create a temporary file containing the standard rules for your installation’s location, then test before making other changes.
For a root installation, the usual WordPress block is:
# BEGIN WordPress
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteRule ^index.php$ - [L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule . /index.php [L]
</IfModule>
# END WordPress
Do not paste this root rule unchanged into a subdirectory installation or multisite network. The rewrite base and destination must match the actual path.

Ask the host to check Apache configuration
If renaming the file changes nothing, ask the hosting provider to verify that mod_rewrite is loaded and that the site’s directory allows .htaccess overrides. WordPress describes mod_rewrite as the Apache extension that rewrites URLs on the fly; without it, pretty URLs and some admin routes can fail. A host can also confirm that the virtual host’s document root points to the directory containing wp-admin, wp-login.php, and index.php.
Check Nginx, IIS, and proxy rules instead of relying on .htaccess
Nginx and IIS do not process Apache .htaccess directives. On those stacks, the equivalent routing belongs in the server or site configuration. Ask the administrator to confirm that requests are passed to the correct WordPress front controller and that the /wp-admin/ and /wp-login.php paths are not blocked or mapped to another root.
Recommended Free Tools
For a reverse proxy or CDN, compare the origin response with the public response. A proxy may send a cached 404, route the admin host to a different origin, or strip the forwarded HTTPS information. Temporarily bypass the proxy only if you control the change and understand its security implications; never expose an unprotected administration endpoint unnecessarily.
Account for subdirectory installs and multisite
Subdirectory installations
If the files live in /blog, the admin URL is normally /blog/wp-admin/, not the root /wp-admin/. Confirm that both WP_HOME and WP_SITEURL, the database values, rewrite base, and proxy rules include the same subdirectory. A root-install rewrite block can send a valid subdirectory request to the wrong location and produce a 404.
Multisite networks
Multisite uses network-specific rewrite rules and can have distinct paths for the network admin and individual sites. Use the rules generated for the network’s actual subdomain or subdirectory mode. Do not replace them wholesale with a single-site root rule. Check the network’s domain, site path, and domain-mapping or proxy configuration when one site fails while the network dashboard works.
Isolate plugins and themes without deleting them
Extensions can alter login URLs, redirect destinations, rewrite rules, permissions, or admin requests. A theme can also add redirect code that runs before the dashboard loads.

Disable every plugin through the file system
- Using SFTP, FTP, or the host’s file manager, rename
wp-content/pluginsto a temporary name such asplugins.disabled. - Open
/wp-login.phpand then/wp-admin/in a private window. - If access returns, restore the folder name to
plugins. - Reactivate plugins one at a time, testing the dashboard after each activation, until the conflicting extension is identified.
Renaming the directory deactivates plugins without removing their settings. If the folder name is restored and the error immediately returns, leave the plugins inactive while you inspect the last activated extension and its redirect or URL settings.
Switch to a default theme
If plugins are not responsible and you can use the database or a file manager, switch temporarily to an installed default WordPress theme. This rules out theme code that changes login behavior or admin redirects. Restore the original theme only after the admin URL works consistently.
Resolve HTTPS, cookies, redirects, and proxy conflicts
- Mixed scheme: Make sure the canonical address is consistently HTTP or HTTPS. A site that terminates TLS at a proxy must pass the correct forwarded-protocol information to WordPress.
- Host mismatch: Choose either the
wwwor non-wwwhostname and redirect the other one deliberately. Do not let the login page use one host while the dashboard uses another. - Stale cookies: Delete cookies for both the old and new host, then retry in a private window. Cookies issued for a previous domain can create loops or make a valid login appear to fail.
- Redirect chains: Inspect the browser’s final URL and every host or scheme change. Remove obsolete migration redirects from server configuration, a redirect plugin, or a proxy.
- Cached errors: Purge the relevant page or edge cache after correcting the origin. A cached 404 can remain visible even when the server is fixed.
Do not solve a loop by disabling all security controls permanently. Make the smallest configuration change, test, and restore protection once routing is correct.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check file integrity and logs
A damaged or incomplete WordPress update can remove or alter files under wp-admin or the root. Compare the installation with a fresh WordPress package of the same version and replace only files known to be missing or damaged, after taking a full backup. Do not overwrite wp-content or wp-config.php indiscriminately.
Review wp-content/debug.log if debugging is enabled, along with PHP-FPM, Apache, Nginx, or IIS error logs. Look for the exact timestamp and request path. A PHP fatal error usually produces a different response from a server-level 404, but the logs can reveal a redirect hook, permission problem, missing file, or upstream routing failure.
Enable WordPress debugging only temporarily and avoid displaying errors to visitors on a production site. Log errors instead, reproduce the request, and turn debugging back off after collecting the evidence.

When you cannot reach the dashboard at all
You can still perform the safest isolation tests through SFTP, FTP, or a hosting file manager: back up and rename .htaccess, rename wp-content/plugins, inspect wp-config.php, and review logs. Database address corrections require a verified backup and careful identification of the correct options table. Server-module changes require host or administrator access.
Avoid repeatedly editing several layers at once. Change one item, test the canonical login and admin URLs, and record the result. This preserves a clear rollback path and prevents a successful fix from being hidden by a second unrelated change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat to send your hosting provider
Escalate when you cannot edit server configuration, do not have file access, or the host controls the proxy. Provide:
- The exact failing URL and the canonical URL you expect.
- Whether the response is server-branded or WordPress-styled.
- The result for
/wp-login.phpand whether login succeeds. - The final URL after any redirect, including host, scheme, and subdirectory.
- The timestamp with time zone and your public IP if the host uses access controls.
- Recent migration, domain, HTTPS, update, plugin, or theme changes.
- Relevant Apache, Nginx, IIS, PHP, and WordPress log lines.
- Whether the front end, other admin screens, and another browser or network show the same behavior.
Ask the provider specifically to verify the virtual-host document root, rewrite support, override permissions, upstream proxy headers, and whether the request is reaching the intended WordPress installation.
Prevent the next admin 404
- Keep current database and file backups before migrations and updates.
- Record the canonical scheme, hostname, and installation path in deployment notes.
- After a migration, test the home page, several front-end permalinks,
wp-login.php,/wp-admin/, media URLs, and logout in a private window. - Use one controlled redirect from alternate hosts or schemes to the canonical address.
- Check that the web server can read the WordPress root and that its rewrite configuration matches the installation type.
- After changing permalinks or moving servers, save Settings > Permalinks once and verify the generated rules.
- Keep plugins, themes, WordPress core, PHP, and server software updated, and document the last change when an error appears.
The repair is complete when the canonical login endpoint authenticates, the browser remains on the intended host and scheme, /wp-admin/ opens without a redirect loop or 404, and representative front-end permalinks continue to resolve.
