If World of Warcraft looks corrupted or the interface changed after an update, start by identifying whether the failure is layout-related, caused by addons and local UI data, or a rendering problem. For broken panels and missing interface elements, test a clean UI by renaming the affected version’s Cache, Interface, and WTF folders. For distorted textures, flickering, or the wrong adapter, verify the selected graphics card and its driver. DirectX changes and Scan and Repair are useful diagnostic experiments for some texture reports, but they are community suggestions rather than universal fixes.
Identify what actually broke
An update can coincide with several different problems, and the remedy depends on the symptom. A moved action bar is a layout issue; missing buttons after an addon update is an interface-data issue; shimmering terrain or unreadable icons is a rendering issue. Do not assume that every post-update fault has the same cause or that resetting every setting is the safest first move.

Player reports often use phrases such as “my UI broke after the patch,” “WoW graphics look corrupted after an update,” or “WoW is using the wrong graphics card.” A report titled “textures and icons bugging out” describes a narrower visual symptom; use that kind of wording when comparing your own behavior with a support thread, not as proof that the same cause applies to your system.
Record the state before changing anything
Write down what happens and when it happens before you rename folders or change a graphics API. This gives you a baseline and makes a later support request actionable.

- Describe the visible symptom precisely: unreadable textures, missing icons, flicker, misplaced frames, a crash, or an error message.
- Note whether it affects every character, one character, one interface panel, or only certain zones or encounters.
- Record the WoW version or game branch affected, such as the version you selected in the launcher.
- Write down your graphics card model and operating system.
- State whether addons were enabled, and name any addon manager that automatically synchronizes files.
- List each test you perform and what changed afterward.
Take a screenshot or a short recording when the problem is visual. Keep the original graphics settings and API setting in your notes so you can undo an experiment cleanly.
Reset the WoW UI and addon data with a clean-folder test
Blizzard Support states, in instructions reproduced in a Blizzard forum post, that “Resetting your UI to default settings can resolve various display and interface issues.” The documented procedure renames three local folders rather than merely turning off an addon or typing /reload. Use it when panels, icons, saved settings, or addon-created elements are missing or behaving unpredictably.
Before the reset
- Exit World of Warcraft completely. Do not leave the game running in the background while renaming its folders.
- Temporarily stop any addon manager from synchronizing or reinstalling files. If it immediately restores the old folders, the test no longer represents a clean UI state.
- Open the Battle.net launcher’s options for World of Warcraft and choose the command to open the game’s install location.
- Enter the folder for the affected WoW version. If you have more than one installed version, work only in the one that shows the problem.
Rename the three folders
- Find the folders named
Cache,Interface, andWTF. - Rename them to backup names, for example
CacheOld,InterfaceOld, andWTFOld. Renaming preserves the data while preventing the game from loading it under the original names. - Launch WoW again without allowing an addon manager to copy the old data back.
- Reproduce the problem using the default interface before reinstalling or enabling addons.
Keep the renamed folders until you know which settings or addon data you need. The reset discards the active local UI, addon, and configuration state from the game’s point of view, so restoring everything at once can bring the original fault back. Do not delete the backup folders during the first test.
Interpret the clean-state result
- The problem disappears: The fault is likely in local UI data, an addon, or an addon interaction. Close the game, restore only the data you need, and enable addons in small groups. Test after each group so the change that reintroduces the fault is identifiable.
- The problem remains with the default interface: Do not keep repeating the folder reset. Move to graphics-card, driver, API, or file-integrity checks, depending on the symptom.
- The old behavior returns immediately: Check that the addon manager is stopped and that no script or synchronization job recreated

This full folder procedure is different from disabling one addon, logging in with a different character, or running /reload. Those actions can leave the underlying configuration and cached data in place.

Check which graphics card WoW is using
For texture corruption, flicker, unexpectedly low performance, or a message resembling “hardware changed. reload default settings?”, verify the adapter selected by WoW. A Blizzard forum reply recommends checking the selected graphics card and updating its driver for a hardware-changed settings issue. That post is older and specific to that scenario, so treat these as troubleshooting checks, not a guaranteed fix for every update problem.
Verify the adapter
- Open WoW’s graphics settings and locate the graphics-card or display-adapter selection.
- Confirm that the game is using the intended discrete GPU when your computer has both a discrete card and an integrated adapter.
- If the selected adapter is unexpected, switch to the intended card, apply the setting, and restart the game.
- Test the same location or action that exposed the fault. Record whether the visual symptom, frame rate, or crash behavior changed.
A computer can expose more than one adapter, especially after a hardware change, driver update, laptop power-mode change, or operating-system reset. Selecting a different adapter is a diagnostic step; it does not establish that the update itself damaged the GPU.
Check the driver through the manufacturer
Use the current driver guidance supplied by your graphics-card manufacturer for your exact model and operating system. Avoid assuming that the newest available package is automatically best for every system, and do not copy a driver version from an unrelated forum report. If you change the driver, note the old and new versions and retest before making another change.
Use DirectX 11 and Scan and Repair only as targeted experiments
A community bug report about textures and icons includes suggestions to test DirectX 11, verify GPU selection, and run Scan and Repair. These ideas come from a symptom-specific forum discussion; they are not confirmed universal remedies from Blizzard. Try them when your symptoms resemble that report, and change one variable at a time.

Test DirectX 11
- Write down the graphics API currently selected in WoW.
- Change the API to DirectX 11 using the game’s graphics settings or the launcher option provided for your installation.
- Restart WoW fully and reproduce the same texture or icon problem.
- If there is no improvement, or another problem appears, restore the original API setting and test again.
Changing the API can alter rendering behavior without touching addon data. It therefore helps distinguish a rendering-path problem from a UI-folder problem, but a result on one computer does not prove that DirectX 11 is the correct permanent setting for all players.
Run Scan and Repair
Use the Battle.net launcher’s Scan and Repair command for World of Warcraft when files may be damaged or incomplete. Let the operation finish, then launch the game and repeat the same reproduction steps. If the command reports no repair or the visual problem persists, continue with the GPU and driver checks rather than treating the scan as a guarantee that the issue is solved.
Fix a layout that moved without treating it as corruption
The updated WoW interface includes layout customization through Edit Mode, accessible from the Game Menu. Open it when frames, bars, or panels are still present but positioned differently after the update.

- Open the in-game Game Menu.
- Choose Edit Mode.
- Select the layout or frame that is out of place and move, resize, or otherwise adjust it using the available controls.
- Save the layout, exit Edit Mode, and verify the affected character and screen.
Edit Mode addresses placement and layout choices. It does not repair corrupted textures, select a different graphics adapter, replace a driver, or cure a crash. If the frame itself is unreadable or missing, return to the clean UI test and graphics checks instead.

Handle crashes and launcher-related symptoms methodically
A crash can be triggered by an addon, local configuration, a graphics path, or damaged files. Avoid changing all of these at once because you will not know which action mattered.
- Reproduce the crash once with addons disabled or with the clean-folder state still active.
- Record the exact error text, the screen or action that preceded the crash, and whether it occurs for every character.
- If the crash is accompanied by corrupted textures or icons, check the selected GPU and consider the DirectX 11 experiment described above.
- Use Scan and Repair when the launcher or game behavior suggests an incomplete or damaged installation.
- Restore one change at a time and retest. If re-enabling a specific addon brings the crash back, leave that addon disabled while seeking an updated compatible version from its maintainer.
A launcher failure, an inability to reach the game installation, and an in-game rendering fault are separate categories. Note which stage fails so support does not have to infer it from a generic statement such as “the update broke WoW.”

If the default UI, adapter check, driver check, and relevant file or API tests do not resolve the issue, provide a compact record rather than repeating the same reset. Blizzard community troubleshooting asks players to include the video card and a clear description of the problem, and official support material points players toward community help when its troubleshooting steps do not work.

- Hardware: graphics-card model and, if relevant, whether the computer has both integrated and discrete adapters.
- Software: operating system, WoW version or branch, and the graphics API selected during each test.
- Symptom: exact visual behavior, error text, affected locations, and whether the issue affects one character or all characters.
- Addon state: whether addons were enabled, whether an addon manager was running, and whether the clean-folder test changed the result.
- Actions already tried: folder renaming, adapter selection, driver check or update, DirectX 11 test, Scan and Repair, and Edit Mode adjustments.
- Results: what happened after each action, including any new symptom or improvement.
Attach a screenshot when it demonstrates the problem, but keep the written description specific enough to stand on its own. A report that says “textures and icons bugging out in one zone after loading a particular character” is more useful than “graphics are broken.”

Restore settings safely after the fault is isolated
Once the game works in a clean state, restore only what you can test. Close WoW before changing the backup folders. Copy or rename a small set of addon and configuration data, launch the game, and reproduce the original scenario. If the problem returns, undo that last change and identify the addon or setting responsible.
Do not overwrite the working folders with the old backups merely to recover every preference at once. Keep a second backup of any files you plan to edit, and stop synchronization software while you are deciding which data to restore.
A practical order for the next update
When a future update changes the interface or graphics behavior, use this order to minimize unnecessary changes:

- Use Edit Mode if the complaint is only that a frame or bar moved.
- Run the clean UI folder test for missing or broken interface elements.
- Check the selected GPU and the manufacturer’s driver guidance for rendering problems.
- Try DirectX 11 or Scan and Repair only when the symptom warrants those community-suggested diagnostics.
- Escalate with the complete test record if the issue persists.
This sequence keeps reversible layout and configuration checks separate from rendering changes. It also leaves you with evidence about what changed, which is essential when a patch-specific cause has not been established.
