Start with the symptom, not a random fix. An outright crash or freeze usually calls for file repair, driver and system updates, and a requirements check. Low frame rates need graphics and background-load checks. Lag, rubber-banding, “You have been disconnected,” and a client stuck at “Retrieving realm list” require addon and network isolation. Record the exact error code, when it appears, which Classic version is selected, and whether other players or devices have the same problem before changing settings.
The steps below follow that decision path. They can identify a damaged installation, software conflict, addon problem, Wi-Fi weakness, or an issue outside your computer. They cannot prove that a realm outage is occurring; if many players report the same failure, check Blizzard’s current service notices before reconfiguring your PC.
Quick triage: identify the failure before fixing it
“WoW Classic is broken” describes several different failures. A game that closes to the desktop is not repaired the same way as a game that runs at 15 frames per second, and neither follows the same path as a disconnect. Use this first-minute triage:
- Capture the exact message or code. Write down the complete text, including capitalization and numbers. Search that exact code in Blizzard Support first; Blizzard notes that a dedicated article may contain steps that are more specific than general troubleshooting.
- Record when it happens. Note whether the failure occurs while launching, signing in, loading a character, entering a realm, or during play.
- Classify the symptom. Choose one primary category: crash or lockup, low FPS or stutter, or lag, rubber-banding, and disconnection.
- Identify the installed game. Classic has multiple versions and each can have different requirements. Confirm the selected game and edition in the Battle.net app before checking hardware or driver guidance.
- Check the scope. Ask whether another computer, phone, or game on the same connection has trouble and whether other players are reporting the same failure. A single affected PC points toward local software or hardware; several affected devices or players can indicate a network or service problem.

Fix crashes, freezes, and lockups
A crash is a client-stability problem until evidence points elsewhere. Work through these steps in order so that each change has a clear purpose.

1. Verify requirements for the exact Classic version
Open the current system-requirements information for the specific Classic version installed, then compare it with the computer’s processor, memory, graphics hardware, operating system, and available storage. Blizzard warns that running below minimum requirements can cause instability. Do not assume that requirements for one Classic mode apply to another.
Being technically above the minimum is not the same as having comfortable headroom. If the computer is close to the minimum specification, reduce other load and expect less tolerance for high resolution, advanced effects, or simultaneous applications. Requirements checking is a diagnosis, not a guarantee that every crash is caused by hardware.
2. Repair the game files
- Exit WoW Classic.
- Open the Battle.net desktop app and select the World of Warcraft installation.
- Open the game-options menu (the gear icon in current Battle.net layouts).
- Choose Scan and Repair, start the scan, and allow it to replace damaged files.
- Launch the game again and test the same action that previously caused the crash.
A repair is especially sensible when a crash began after an interrupted update, an unexpected shutdown, or a damaged download. It does not correct an operating-system failure or a failing component.
3. Update graphics drivers and the operating system
Install current graphics drivers from the graphics-hardware manufacturer and apply pending operating-system updates. Driver compatibility can change after a major game update, so a previously stable installation can start crashing without any change to your in-game settings. Restart the computer after updates that request it, then test before adding other changes.
4. Remove software conflicts
Close browsers, recording tools, overlays, hardware-monitoring utilities, and other applications for a test session. Blizzard’s general troubleshooting guidance recommends closing other applications to free resources and reduce conflicts. Reproduce the crash with only Battle.net and WoW Classic running. If the crash disappears, reopen programs one at a time to find the conflict instead of leaving every program disabled permanently.

5. Reinstall only after the earlier checks
If requirements, file repair, updates, and a clean-background test do not help, reinstall WoW Classic. A reinstall takes longer and consumes bandwidth, which is why it belongs after repair and compatibility checks. Keep your account credentials and any required authenticator access available before removing the installation.
When the whole computer shuts down
A system shutdown, restart, blue screen, or hardware error is broader than a WoW client crash. Treat it as a computer, driver, thermal, power, or operating-system problem and use the relevant system or blue-screen troubleshooting path. Do not assume that reinstalling the game can fix a machine-level failure.

Low FPS means the game is running but cannot render frames fast enough. Network troubleshooting will not raise frame rate, and a new network cable cannot fix a graphics bottleneck.
Confirm that the computer has performance headroom
Check the requirements for the selected Classic version and compare them with the computer’s hardware. Blizzard notes that systems closer to minimum requirements can deliver worse performance. If the game was switched to a higher resolution or more demanding preset, restore a level the hardware can sustain before investigating more unusual causes.
Test with other programs closed
Exit browsers and other applications, then repeat the same in-game scene or activity. A browser with many tabs, a video stream, recording software, or another demanding process can compete for CPU, memory, or graphics resources. This controlled test distinguishes a resource contest from a game-rendering setting.

Check the graphics driver after updates
Install a current driver, particularly if the slowdown started after a major WoW or operating-system update. Reboot when requested and test again. Keep the driver change separate from other graphics changes so you know which action altered the result.

Test Vertical Sync deliberately
Blizzard suggests toggling Vertical Sync off and checking whether performance changes. Turn it off, test a repeatable scene, and compare the result. If there is no improvement or other visual problems appear, turn Vertical Sync back on. This is a diagnostic toggle, not a universal performance setting.
Restore default in-game graphics settings
If the driver and background-load checks do not explain the slowdown, restore the game’s default graphics settings and test before making individual adjustments. Change one setting at a time afterward so a problematic option can be identified. Keep a note of the original values if you want to return to them.
Fix lag, rubber-banding, and disconnections
Lag is a timing problem: your actions reach the game late, arrive inconsistently, or fail to reach it. Rubber-banding occurs when the client corrects your position after delayed or missing updates. A disconnect can be caused by the local computer, Wi-Fi, router, internet provider, or a service-side event. Use isolation steps rather than assuming the most expensive remedy is the best one.
1. Restart the computer and stop competing internet traffic
Close downloads, cloud synchronization, video streams, software updates, and other programs using the connection. Restart the computer, then test WoW Classic with those programs still closed. This removes temporary client and network-state problems while preventing another application from consuming bandwidth or creating bursts of traffic.

2. Update and isolate addons
Out-of-date or conflicting addons can contribute to lag and disconnections, particularly after a game update.
- Update every installed addon using the addon manager or the source you normally use.
- Launch WoW Classic with all addons disabled and reproduce the symptom.
- If the problem disappears, re-enable addons selectively until the symptom returns.
- Remove or update the addon identified by that test.
- If the symptom continues with all addons disabled, reset the user interface using Blizzard’s current UI-reset procedure and test again.
Do not conclude that addons are innocent because the game eventually reconnects. The useful comparison is whether the same repeatable action behaves differently with all addons off.
3. Power-cycle the modem and router connection
- Shut down WoW Classic and unplug the modem’s power.
- Leave it unplugged for about 30 seconds.
- Reconnect power and wait about one minute for internet service to return.
- Restart the computer and test the game again.
This clears a temporary local network state. It cannot repair a provider outage, a realm-side incident, damaged game files, or a weak wireless signal elsewhere in the home.
4. Test WoW Classic over Ethernet
Connect the computer directly to the modem or router with an Ethernet cable and repeat the same in-game test. Blizzard states that wireless (Wi-Fi) connections can have difficulties with online gaming. A wired comparison helps determine whether wireless interference, distance, or router placement is involved; it is a diagnostic test, not a guaranteed cure for every latency source.

If wired and wireless behave identically, the cause may be upstream of Wi-Fi or unrelated to the local radio link.

5. Contact the right party with evidence
If the issue remains after the computer restart, addon isolation, modem power-cycle, and wired comparison, contact your internet service provider about online-gaming connectivity. Give them the times of failure and whether Ethernet changed the result. If the error is specific to WoW Classic, contact Blizzard technical support with the exact code, the game version, the time it occurs, and every step already attempted. This prevents repeating generic tests without adding new information.

Blizzard describes BLZ51901016 as an error that can occur when the computer does not meet the game’s requirements or when there is a connection problem. The code is a starting point, not a diagnosis for every disconnection.
Use this order for that code:
- Confirm the requirements for the exact WoW Classic version selected.
- Update graphics and other relevant drivers and apply operating-system updates.
- Reset the user interface after disabling or updating addons.
- Reset network devices with the 30-second modem power-cycle procedure.
- Test a direct wired connection and investigate wireless or low-speed conditions if the result changes.
- Close other applications, especially those using the internet or significant system resources.
If you are disconnected and then stuck at “Retrieving realm list,” record that sequence exactly. It gives support more useful information than reporting only that the game “lags.”
Decide whether the problem is your PC, your network, or the service
Signs that point to one computer
- Only one PC fails while another device on the same connection works normally.
- The game crashes to the desktop or freezes without affecting other internet activity.
- The issue began after a driver, game, addon, or operating-system update.
- Repairing files, disabling addons, or closing background applications changes the behavior.
Signs that point to the local network
- Several devices lose internet access at the same time.
- WoW behaves differently on Ethernet and Wi-Fi.
- Other online services also become slow or disconnect.
- The problem follows the household connection rather than the computer.
Signs that justify checking service notices
- Multiple players in the same region report the same login or realm-list failure.
- The problem starts suddenly for several accounts without local changes.
- Both wired and wireless tests fail while other local checks are normal.
The available guidance does not establish that a particular outage is active. Check Blizzard’s current service notices when the scope looks widespread instead of repeatedly reinstalling or changing graphics settings.
How to report the issue so support can act
Prepare a compact record before opening a support case:
- The exact error text and code, such as BLZ51901016.
- The Classic version or mode selected in Battle.net.
- Whether the failure is a crash, low FPS, rubber-banding, disconnect, or realm-list loop.
- When it occurs: launch, login, loading, or a particular in-game action.
- Whether addons were enabled, disabled, or reset.
- Whether file repair completed and whether drivers and the operating system are current.
- Whether modem restart, Ethernet, or closing other internet programs changed the result.
- Whether another device or player experiences the same problem.
This evidence lets support separate installation, performance, UI, connection, and service categories instead of sending the same general checklist repeatedly.
