First, reload Media → Library before trying the upload again. WordPress can display an error after the file has already been saved. If the file is absent, test a small JPEG or PNG, then open Tools → Site Health → Info and compare the file with the server’s effective upload limit, enabled PHP features, and directory permissions. The exact error message determines whether you should convert the image, wait and retry, ask the host to raise a limit, correct ownership, or flush rewrite rules after a migration.
Start by checking whether the upload actually finished
An upload error does not always mean that no file was stored. In particular, “Unexpected response from the server.” can appear after WordPress has accepted the file but before the browser receives a normal response.

- Wait for the upload notification to finish.
- Open Media → Library in a new tab, or refresh the existing library.
- Search by the original filename and sort by date if necessary.
- Open the attachment. Confirm that the preview, file URL, dimensions, and metadata are present.
If the attachment is present, do not upload it repeatedly. Repeated attempts can create duplicate files and consume storage. If the attachment is missing, continue with the diagnostic steps below and keep the exact error text for your host or developer.
Match the exact WordPress message to the likely cause
Small wording differences point to different parts of the upload process. Use this table before changing server settings.

Test with a known-good file
Use a format WordPress can process
The Block Editor documentation identifies JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF, and HEIC as supported client-side image formats. Support still depends on the installed PHP image library and the particular file’s encoding. A file can have a familiar extension while containing damaged or unusual data.
- Choose a small image that opens normally in an image viewer.
- Save or export it as a standard JPEG or PNG, rather than merely renaming its extension.
- Use a simple filename containing letters, numbers, hyphens, or underscores.
- Upload only that file, not a batch.
If the converted test succeeds while the original fails, the original’s encoding, corruption, dimensions, color profile, or size is the issue. Keep the successful test as a baseline while testing the original again. If even the tiny JPEG fails, the problem is more likely to be server configuration, permissions, a request filter, or an extension conflict.

Inspect Site Health before editing server files
WordPress exposes the most useful upload diagnostics at Tools → Site Health → Info. Expand the relevant sections and record the values rather than relying on the limit displayed in the media uploader.
file_uploads: This must be enabled for PHP to accept uploaded files.- Maximum post-data size: The largest total POST request PHP will accept.
- Maximum single-file upload size: The per-file PHP limit.
- Maximum effective file size: The smaller of the post-data limit and the single-file limit. This is the practical ceiling for one upload, not a universal recommendation.
- Maximum files per request: A batch can fail even when every individual file is small if this setting is restrictive.
- GD and Imagick: Note whether each library is available, its version, and the formats it reports.
- Filesystem status: Check whether the WordPress,
wp-content, anduploadsdirectories are writable.
Copy these values with the failing filename, its exact byte size, and the error message. Site Health can show that a setting is restricted by the server; in that case, changing WordPress options cannot override it.

Resolve size and request-limit failures
Compare the file with the effective limit
Check the file’s actual size in your operating system, not only its dimensions. A photograph can be small in width and height yet large in megabytes because of high-quality compression or embedded data. The file must be below both PHP limits, and the request also has to fit within the maximum post-data size. The effective value reported by Site Health is the smaller of those two limits.
For a diagnostic test, export a modest JPEG or PNG and upload it alone. If that works, reduce the failing image’s quality or dimensions, or ask the host to adjust the PHP limits for your site. Do not assume that increasing the WordPress media setting changes PHP; the host or PHP configuration controls the underlying values.
Recognize batch-upload limits
Uploading many files creates one request or several concurrent requests, depending on the interface and browser. A restrictive maximum-files-per-request value can make a batch fail while one file succeeds. Upload in smaller groups to confirm this cause, then request a configuration change if normal editorial work requires larger batches.
Fix permissions without making the site unsafe
WordPress documentation notes that media uploads may require correct permissions on wp-content. The web server process must be able to create files in the uploads directory and, when generating thumbnails, write the derived files there as well.

Use targeted ownership and permissions
- Identify the exact uploads directory used by the site, normally under
wp-content/uploads. - Ask the host which account and group run PHP or the web server for this installation.
- Have the host correct ownership and apply its documented least-privilege directory and file settings.
- Retry one small image and verify that both the original and generated sizes appear.
Do not recursively change the entire WordPress installation just because one directory is unwritable. Ownership that is wrong for the server account can be more important than a numeric mode, and a broad change can expose configuration files or executable code.
Why 777 is not a safe upload fix
Setting a directory to 777 allows every local account and process to write there. WordPress warns that an attacker who can upload or modify an executable file may gain control of the site, including access to database credentials. A temporary success after using 777 is therefore not a valid resolution. Revert that setting and have the host apply the account-specific permissions instead.

WordPress first receives the upload in PHP’s temporary area, then moves it into the uploads directory and asks GD or Imagick to create image metadata and alternate sizes. Failure at any stage can look like an HTTP or image-processing error.
- Temporary storage: A file can be within the displayed size limit but fail if PHP’s temporary directory is full or unavailable.
- Memory and processing time: Large dimensions require more memory than their compressed file size suggests. Processing can time out or be terminated.
- GD/Imagick support: The extension may be missing, outdated, or compiled without support for the uploaded format.
- Filesystem ownership: PHP may receive the file successfully but be unable to move it or write thumbnails.
Use Site Health to capture the GD and Imagick versions and supported formats. If these values, PHP limits, temporary storage, or ownership are managed by the host, send support the filename, byte size, dimensions, exact message, time of failure, and the Site Health values. That gives the provider enough information to inspect PHP and web-server logs without guessing.

Rule out browser, plugin, and theme interference
Test the browser path
- Open the site in a private window with extensions disabled where possible.
- Try the same known-good file in another current browser.
- If only one browser fails, clear its cached site data and disable upload, privacy, ad-blocking, or security extensions one at a time.
A successful private-window test points to the original browser session rather than the file or server. A failure in every browser indicates that you should continue with server and WordPress diagnostics.
Isolate plugins and themes safely
Upload requests pass through WordPress admin and, in some interfaces, REST endpoints. A security, optimization, media, or caching plugin can block the request or alter its response; a theme can also add administrative code. Record the exact request error before changing production settings.

Migration-related failures have a distinctive pattern: uploads worked before the move, new images may produce a blank screen, or existing image URLs return 404 even though files are present on disk.

Flush the permalink rules
- Sign in as an administrator.
- Go to Settings → Permalinks.
- Leave the existing permalink structure selected.
- Click Save Changes to regenerate the rewrite rules.
- Open an affected image URL in a private window and test a new upload.
Saving the existing structure flushes WordPress’s rewrite rules without requiring a permalink redesign. If image URLs still return 404, ask the host to verify Apache mod_rewrite support and the generated .htaccess file, or the equivalent rewrite configuration on the server. A white screen after migration also warrants checking PHP errors and file ownership rather than repeatedly uploading the same image.
Use a symptom-based decision path
- The item appears after refresh: Keep the attachment and stop retrying; the browser response was misleading.
- A tiny JPEG works, but the original does not: Convert the original, reduce its dimensions or quality, and compare its size and format with the effective limit.
- No file works and Site Health says
file_uploadsis disabled: Contact the host or administrator; WordPress cannot enable a disabled PHP feature from the dashboard. - No file works and directories are not writable: Request targeted ownership and permissions for the uploads path.
- GD or Imagick is missing or lacks the format: Ask the host to enable a suitable image library, or use a format supported by the installed library.
- Only batches fail: Upload fewer files per request and check the maximum-files-per-request value.
- Only one browser fails: Clear its site data and disable extensions, then retest.
- The problem began immediately after migration and URLs are 404: Save the permalink settings, then have the host inspect rewrite support and
.htaccess.
What to send hosting support
Provide a concise reproduction report instead of saying only “media uploads are broken.” Include:

- The site address and administrator account context, without sending a password.
- The exact error text and the time it occurred, including the time zone.
- The filename, extension, byte size, pixel dimensions, and whether a small JPEG or PNG succeeds.
- Whether the attachment appears after reloading Media Library.
- The Site Health values for
file_uploads, post-data size, single-file size, effective size, files per request, GD/Imagick, and directory writability. - Whether the issue reproduces in another browser or a private window.
- Whether it started after a migration, domain change, PHP change, plugin update, or server move.
Ask the provider to check PHP temporary storage, memory and execution limits, web-server request rules, extension availability, filesystem ownership, and rewrite configuration. These are server-level controls that dashboard settings may not expose.
Debug carefully and remove diagnostic exposure
Server and WordPress logs can reveal the failing PHP function, HTTP status, extension error, or permission denial. Enable logging only through a controlled, preferably staging, workflow and protect the log files from public access. Logs can contain paths, request data, usernames, or other sensitive information.
After identifying the cause, disable public error display and temporary debugging settings, remove test files, and confirm that normal uploads and thumbnail generation work. Leave the site with the narrow permissions and server configuration required for operation, not with broad write access used only to make a test pass.
