When WordPress saves the original upload but no thumbnail, medium, large, or theme-specific files appear, the failure is usually in image processing rather than the Media Library itself. WordPress must have a working GD or Imagick stack, enough PHP and operating-system resources, writable upload directories, and a registered image size to create each derivative.
Use this order: confirm which files are missing, inspect Tools > Site Health, check the server’s image libraries and limits, verify Media settings and theme registration, test with a small ordinary image, correct the underlying fault, then regenerate attachments that were uploaded before the fix. Re-uploading repeatedly does not repair an unavailable library, a permission error, or a size that was never registered.

Confirm exactly what is missing
Open Media > Library and inspect an affected attachment. The original file should exist in the Media Library and in the site’s uploads directory. Look for the generated variants in the same year/month folder: a 150-pixel crop may use a filename such as photo-150x150.jpg, while medium, large, and theme sizes have names based on their dimensions or registered slug.
- Original present, every derivative absent: processing probably failed, or no additional sizes are currently registered.
- Some sizes present: the failing size may be too large for available resources, unsupported by the active image library, or filtered by theme or plugin code.
- Only the expected 150×150 file is absent: the thumbnail setting may have changed, cropping may be disabled, or the theme may request a different size.
- Files exist but do not appear on the front end: the template may be requesting a different registered size; this is not the same as failed generation.
Compare an affected upload with a recent one and note the file type, pixel dimensions, and upload date. That distinction prevents you from regenerating files when the real problem is an unregistered size.

Use Site Health before changing code
Go to Tools > Site Health > Info. Expand Media Handling and Filesystem Permissions. WordPress reports the GD version and supported formats, Imagick availability and version, relevant PHP variables, upload limits, and whether the directories it needs can be written.

If the uploads path or another required directory is not writable, contact the host or server administrator and have ownership and permissions corrected for the web process. Do not repeatedly upload the same image while this check is failing. If Site Health shows that neither usable GD nor Imagick is available, the host must install or enable one of those libraries; a theme setting cannot substitute for an image-processing engine.
Check the image-processing stack and server capacity
GD and Imagick are the two usual paths
WordPress can use the PHP GD extension or the Imagick extension backed by ImageMagick. The Media Settings documentation states: “You will need php-gd (GD graphics library) installed on your server to use this feature.” Imagick also depends on ImageMagick being installed correctly on the server. Site Health identifies which editor is available and which formats it can read or write.
A server can have the PHP extension enabled but still lack a usable ImageMagick installation, policy permissions, or support for a particular format. Treat the version and format information in Site Health as the starting point, then ask the host to verify the complete stack rather than installing random plugins.
Memory, execution time, and upload limits
Resizing is memory intensive because the editor must decode the source image into an in-memory bitmap before creating each derivative. A large pixel area, multiple frames in an animated image, unusual color data, or several sizes generated in one request can exhaust memory even when the compressed file is small. Shared hosting may also terminate a request that exceeds CPU or execution time.

Check the effective values for memory_limit, maximum upload size, maximum post size, and execution time in Site Health or your host’s PHP information. There is no universal “safe” megabyte value: required capacity depends on dimensions, format, the number of sizes, and the server configuration. WordPress may request additional memory for image-processing work, but the host can still impose a lower ceiling.
The 2560-pixel behavior is not a processing guarantee
WordPress documents a default big_image_size_threshold of 2560 pixels. This behavior can create a scaled-down “big image” version for very large uploads; it does not guarantee that the original upload or all thumbnails will process successfully. A host with insufficient memory can fail before or during that operation, and changing the threshold does not repair a missing GD/Imagick library or a permissions problem.
Verify Media settings and registered sizes
Review the built-in sizes
Open Settings > Media and inspect the Thumbnail, Medium, and Large dimensions. Check whether thumbnails are set to crop to exact dimensions. A change here affects future generation rules; it does not retroactively create files for attachments already in the library.
For example, if the thumbnail width was changed from one value to another, old attachments retain the files produced under the previous rule until you regenerate them. If cropping was switched off, the result may preserve aspect ratio instead of producing the square dimensions you expected.

Check theme and plugin declarations
Custom sizes come from code such as add_image_size(). Confirm that the active theme or a required plugin still declares the size and that templates request the same slug. The active theme also needs add_theme_support( 'post-thumbnails' ) for the relevant post type. A size added after images were uploaded will not appear on those old attachments until regeneration.
Do not assume that a missing filename proves a server failure. If no code registers the requested size, WordPress has nothing to generate. Conversely, a registered size can still fail if the image editor, resources, or filesystem is broken.

Run a controlled upload test
After checking Site Health and settings, upload a small, ordinary RGB JPEG or PNG with modest dimensions. Use a new filename so you can identify the request in logs and the uploads directory.
- Upload the test file through Media > Add New.
- Open the attachment and inspect its generated sizes and the corresponding uploads folder.
- Compare the result with a very large image or the unusual format that originally failed.
- Record whether the small test succeeds, partially succeeds, or fails in exactly the same way.
If the small file succeeds while a very large or unusual file fails, resource use or format support is the likely branch. If every image fails, concentrate on GD/Imagick availability, directory permissions, PHP limits, and code that filters image-size generation. A successful test does not prove that the server can process every source dimension.
Read logs instead of guessing at conflicts
When available, review the PHP error log and web-server log for the timestamp of the failed upload. Messages about exhausted memory, execution time, denied writes, unsupported formats, or ImageMagick policy restrictions point to different fixes. A blank or generic Media Library error is not enough evidence to blame a plugin or theme.
Only test for a plugin or theme conflict after the server checks are clean. Reproduce the failure with the smallest reasonable set of active components, record which component changes the result, and then restore the production configuration. Avoid deactivating security or caching controls on a live site without a maintenance plan.
Fix the underlying cause
When a library is missing or unusable
Ask the host to enable a supported GD build or repair Imagick and its ImageMagick dependency. Request confirmation that the extension is loaded for the PHP version serving web requests, not only for a command-line PHP binary. After the change, refresh Site Health and repeat the controlled upload.
When directories are not writable
Have the administrator correct ownership and permissions for wp-content/uploads and any required temporary directory. The web-server user must be able to create files and directories without making the entire site world-writable. Recheck Filesystem Permissions after the change; do not mask a permission problem by repeatedly changing numeric modes at random.

When resources are exhausted
Reduce the source pixel dimensions before upload, increase the effective PHP memory and execution limits within the host’s policy, or move processing to a plan with more CPU and memory. Large animated or unusual images may require conversion to a supported static format. Make one change at a time so the successful remedy is identifiable, then test both a normal image and a representative large image.
When a size is not registered
Restore the relevant add_image_size() declaration and confirm the template uses that name. If the size is no longer needed, update the template instead of generating files that no page requests. Registration fixes the rule for new uploads; it does not create historical files automatically.
Understand WordPress 7.1 client-side processing
WordPress 7.1 introduces client-side media processing with WebAssembly and libvips in supported browsers. Resizing and format conversion can therefore occur in the visitor’s browser, reducing PHP CPU and memory pressure on the server.
This path is conditional. An unsupported browser, insufficient device resources, or disabled client-side processing falls back to traditional server-side GD or Imagick. A host-side repair is still necessary when fallback is being used. Treat a successful upload in one browser as evidence about that browser’s path, not as proof that every browser and server combination will work.

Existing attachments were processed under the old conditions. Once the library, permissions, limits, and size registrations are correct, regenerate the files that are missing.
WP-CLI for administrators with shell access
Back up the database and uploads directory, test a small subset, and run regeneration during a period when added CPU and disk activity will not disrupt visitors.

wp media regenerate --yesThe command rebuilds registered image sizes for the media library. To rebuild only one size, use the selector documented by WP-CLI:
wp media regenerate --image_size=thumbnail --yesThe --image_size option limits the operation to the named registered size. If the slug is not currently registered, the command cannot create it; fix registration first. A bulk run can be expensive on a large library, so monitor the process and stop it if the host begins throttling or returning errors.
Dashboard regeneration
Sites without shell access can use a maintained thumbnail-regeneration plugin that offers a dashboard action. Choose a tool that lets you select a subset or a specific size, and verify that it is compatible with the active WordPress and PHP versions. Back up before a bulk operation and run a small batch first on production.
Verify the result without creating new problems
- Inspect the uploads folder for the expected derivative names and dimensions.
- Open the attachment in the Media Library and confirm that WordPress lists the generated sizes.
- Load a page that requests the size and verify that the template points to an existing file.
- Test a newly uploaded normal image and one representative large image.
- Review logs for new memory, timeout, permission, or format errors during the test.
If regeneration reports success but a requested file is still absent, check the registered slug and the template’s requested size before rerunning the whole library. If files are created but later disappear, investigate a separate cleanup or deployment process rather than image generation itself.
Choose the least risky remedy

Prevent future thumbnail failures
- Keep GD or Imagick installed and verify its status after PHP upgrades.
- Monitor Site Health for writable uploads and temporary directories.
- Set upload and execution limits according to the largest images your editors actually submit, rather than relying on a universal number.
- Document custom sizes and the theme or plugin that registers each one.
- After changing dimensions, cropping, or registrations, schedule targeted regeneration instead of expecting old attachments to change.
- Test a small JPEG or PNG after host, PHP, theme, or image-library changes.
- Back up before bulk regeneration and run it in batches on a production site.
- Keep representative logs for failed uploads so the next incident can be tied to a memory, timeout, permission, or format message.
When to contact your host
Escalate with specific evidence: the Site Health Media Handling output, Filesystem Permissions result, PHP memory and execution values, the source format and dimensions, the exact time of failure, and any log message. Ask whether the web PHP process has GD or Imagick, whether ImageMagick permits the format, and whether the uploads directory is writable by that process.
A host-side change is the correct remedy when the library is absent, permissions are wrong, or resource ceilings are enforced outside WordPress. Once those conditions are corrected, WordPress settings and regeneration tools can rebuild the files without requiring a fresh upload of every original.
