If WireGuard stopped connecting after you enabled post-quantum protection, first identify whether your VPN app manages the setting or whether a manual WireGuard configuration runs a setup hook. Those are different workflows, and a failed hook or unsupported client can stop the post-quantum preshared-key (PSK) setup from completing. Follow the provider’s instructions for your specific app or configuration; the manual steps below apply only to Mullvad’s documented setup.
First identify how post-quantum protection is configured
Check whether you turned on a setting in your VPN provider’s app or edited a WireGuard configuration to run a utility or command. Use the app’s own status indicator and troubleshooting guidance for an app-managed feature. With a manual setup, check the utility, hook command, and platform support before changing unrelated network settings.
For Mullvad’s app, the setting is under Settings → VPN settings → WireGuard settings → Quantum-resistant tunnel. Mullvad announced the feature in 2023, but that announcement described availability at the time; use current documentation for current platform support. The manual instructions below are also Mullvad-specific and should not be treated as a generic way to add post-quantum protection to other VPN services.
Compare the app-managed and manual routes

For Mullvad manual setups, verify the PSK workflow
Mullvad’s manual method uses mullvad-upgrade-tunnel to upgrade the tunnel setup. Confirm that the utility is installed for your platform and that the PostUp command in your WireGuard configuration follows Mullvad’s instructions. The guide uses %i on Linux and macOS, and %WIREGUARD_TUNNEL_NAME% on Windows. Consult the Mullvad manual setup guide for the exact command and current instructions; the utility is also documented in the Mullvad utility repository.

After setup, Mullvad says wg output should include a preshared key: (hidden) line beneath the peer. If it is absent, the PSK was not configured in the interface as expected, so check the hook command, utility installation, and client support. Seeing that line confirms a configured PSK; it does not prove that routing, server-side settings, or the rest of the connection is correct.
Check whether your platform supports the manual hook
macOS
Mullvad says its WireGuard client from the Mac App Store does not support the PostUp option used by its manual method. For that particular workflow, Mullvad recommends installing WireGuard with Homebrew. This limitation concerns the manual hook route, not the separate setting in a provider app.

Windows
Mullvad says PostUp is disabled by default in its documented Windows workflow. Its instructions describe enabling it with a registry value named DangerousScriptExecution and explicitly flag security concerns. Treat that as a security-sensitive, provider-specific configuration change—not a general recommendation or a step to try casually. If you deliberately choose this manual route, follow Mullvad’s current instructions; otherwise use a supported app-managed option if your provider offers one.

If you use mullvad-upgrade-tunnel, check whether the WireGuard configuration has SaveConfig = true. Mullvad says not to use that setting with the utility: when the interface shuts down, it may save the temporary ephemeral peer accepted by the relay over the regular peer configuration. A later connection attempt can then fail. Disable SaveConfig and restore the regular provider configuration before reconnecting, following Mullvad’s setup instructions.

Match other setup errors to their documented fixes
These errors are not established as consequences of post-quantum protection. Address them only if the exact symptom matches:
wg-quickreportsRTNETLINK answers: No such device: Mullvad’s troubleshooting guidance says to check that the configured MTU is not below 1280. Do not treat that threshold as a universal fix for other errors.- Linux reports
Protocol not supportedfor the kernel module: Mullvad advises checking that the running kernel and the headers used to install WireGuard packages match, then checking whether the module loads.

Use handshake status as a clue, not a diagnosis
WireGuard sends packets over UDP and uses the Noise_IK handshake. If there is no recent handshake, or the displayed handshake is stale, that tells you the tunnel is not currently completing the expected exchange; it does not identify one universal cause. A setup hook that failed to install the expected configuration is one possibility in a manual workflow, but the symptom alone does not establish that explanation. Once you have verified the configuration and PSK path, use your provider’s current troubleshooting guidance for the exact client and network involved. The WireGuard protocol documentation describes protocol behavior, not a one-size-fits-all diagnosis for a connection that remains on “connecting.”

Compare with the feature disabled only to isolate the change
If your provider supports a non-post-quantum connection mode, try the same profile with the feature disabled as a controlled comparison. Record whether the connection and handshake behavior change, then restore the security setting you intend to use after troubleshooting. This comparison can help isolate whether the change is related; it is not proof of the cause or a permanent security recommendation.

WireGuard’s optional PSK slot can add a post-quantum secrecy layer when a genuine post-quantum handshake generates and supplies the key. The WireGuard project states: “WireGuard is not, by default, post-quantum secure.” It also says: “The best bet for post-quantum security is to run a truly post-quantum handshake on top of WireGuard, and then insert that key into WireGuard’s pre-shared key slot.” See the project’s Known Limitations for the qualification and context.
If the checklist does not resolve it, collect the details
Connection failures depend on the provider, client, operating system, and configuration. When asking your provider or support community for help, include:
