If Windows Update fails and DISM or System File Checker (SFC) has not fixed it, the next step is to identify the exact Windows Update error code and the full DISM and SFC results—not to assume a particular cause. Work from the least disruptive checks to a Windows repair reinstall, and back up important files before troubleshooting.

What the build number does—and doesn’t—tell you

Windows 11 Home 25H2 build 26200.8457 corresponds to Microsoft’s May 12, 2026 cumulative update, KB5089549. Microsoft’s September 8, 2026 security update notes list build 26200.9445 for Windows 11 25H2, so 26200.8457 is older in the cited update history. That does not establish that the older build caused your failure or that this build has a known SFC or DISM problem. Check the update history and the updates currently offered to your PC before attempting to install a package manually. Microsoft’s KB5089549 release notes and KB5124008 release notes identify those builds.

Collect the details that determine the next fix

The title alone is not enough to diagnose the machine. Before changing update components or trying another repair command, record:

  • The exact Windows Update error code and the KB update that failed. Look in Settings > Windows Update > Update history, or copy the code from the failure screen.
  • When it fails: while downloading, during installation, or after restarting.
  • The complete DISM output, including any error code, and SFC’s final message.
  • Whether a restart is pending, how much free space is available, and whether a work or school policy manages the device.

These details matter because Windows Update codes point to different possible causes and remedies. For example, Microsoft’s guidance associates 0x8007000d with update-file or cache problems, and 0x800f0922 with insufficient disk space or component issues. Neither code can be assumed here: no error code was provided. Use Microsoft’s error-specific Windows Update troubleshooting guidance for the code shown on your PC.

Start with the Windows Update troubleshooter

Microsoft recommends starting Windows 11 update troubleshooting in the Get Help app. The troubleshooter runs diagnostics and attempts to address common problems; it may not resolve every failure.

  1. Back up important personal files.
  2. Open Get Help and run the Windows Update troubleshooter. Follow the prompts and note any result or recommended action.
  3. Restart the PC if directed, then try Windows Update again.
  4. If it still fails, use the error code you recorded to follow the matching Microsoft troubleshooting branch rather than applying unrelated fixes.

Depending on the error, the relevant checks may include internet connectivity, available disk space, update files or cache, or a driver or software conflict. Microsoft’s troubleshooting page describes error-specific actions, including cache and storage checks; avoid broad or destructive resets unless the matching guidance supports them.

Run DISM first, then let SFC finish

DISM repairs the Windows image and provides repair files that SFC can use. Microsoft’s documented sequence is to run DISM before SFC from an elevated Command Prompt:

  1. Open Start, search for Command Prompt, choose Run as administrator, and approve the prompt.
  2. Run DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth. Wait for the command to finish and record the full result or error.
  3. After DISM completes, run sfc /scannow. Leave the Command Prompt open until verification reaches 100%, then record SFC’s final message.
  4. Restart if the result or Windows directs you to, and try the update again.

Follow Microsoft’s System File Checker instructions if you need the official workflow and result explanations. If DISM or SFC fails, retain the exact error instead of repeatedly running commands without changing the cause.

If DISM cannot find repair files

By default, DISM gets repair files through Windows Update. If the update client is itself broken, that repair source may be unavailable. Microsoft documents using a running Windows installation or a Windows side-by-side folder on network or removable media as an alternate source.

An alternate source must be valid and compatible with the Windows installation being repaired. Do not copy an example path or guess at an image file: use Microsoft’s /Source and /LimitAccess guidance and substitute a source you have verified is suitable. The title provides neither DISM’s error nor a repair image, so it is not possible to prescribe a specific source path or command for this PC. See the Microsoft SFC and DISM repair-source instructions.

Use Windows Update’s repair reinstall if it is offered

If ordinary troubleshooting does not resolve persistent system-file or component problems, check Settings > System > Recovery for Fix problems using Windows Update. Microsoft says this option reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. Availability depends on eligibility and prerequisites; the option may not appear on a device managed by work or school.

Back up your files before proceeding, and follow the on-screen instructions if the option is available. It is an in-place repair, not a clean installation. Microsoft explains its requirements and behavior in Fix problems using Windows Update.

When a clean installation is the remaining option

A clean installation is a separate, more disruptive step. Do not treat it as interchangeable with the recovery reinstall: it can remove apps and data. Consider it only after less disruptive options have failed and you have carefully backed up files and prepared for reinstalling Windows and applications. Microsoft links to clean-install guidance from its Windows Update troubleshooting page.

What to include when asking for targeted help

If the failure continues, provide the exact Windows Update error code and KB, when the failure occurs, the full DISM error or completion message, SFC’s final result, free disk space, and whether the device is managed. Those observations are what distinguish an update download/cache issue from a repair-source, storage, policy, or other problem; without them, a device-specific diagnosis would be guesswork.
