Start by identifying whether the problem affects one app, Windows generally, or startup. Then try the least disruptive repair that fits: an app repair for an app-only fault, Windows troubleshooting or system-file repair for broader problems, and Windows Recovery Environment tools if the PC will not start. No single tool fixes every Windows problem, and some failures ultimately need a reset, reinstall, or hardware repair.
Before a reset or other recovery that could affect data, back up important files. If device encryption is enabled, locate the BitLocker recovery key; WinRE may ask for it during recovery. If Windows still responds, save your work and use the supported Settings options rather than making forced shutdowns or repeated repair attempts.
First: what kind of Windows problem are you seeing?
Note what happens and when it started. Did it begin after a driver, app, or Windows update? Does one app fail while other parts of Windows work, or are there system-wide crashes, freezes, or slowdowns? Does Windows reach the sign-in screen, or is the PC stuck on a black or blue screen, showing an error, or looping during startup?
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
This distinction matters because an app repair will not fix a failed startup, while an offline startup tool is unnecessary for a single app that Windows can still open. Microsoft groups recovery around whether Windows starts and recommends beginning with the least disruptive option that fits the symptom. Some recovery choices can cause data loss. See Microsoft’s Windows recovery options.

Which repair should you try first?
| Option | Does Windows need to start? | What it targets | What it changes or preserves | Requirements and disruption |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Repair an app | Yes | One malfunctioning app | Repair attempts to fix the app; Reset may remove its app data or settings. | Settings controls are available only for some apps; low disruption. |
| Troubleshooter, update removal, or System Restore | Usually; some options are also available in WinRE | A matching Windows symptom or a problem that followed a recent change | Depends on the option. System Restore rolls back system changes after a restore point without affecting personal files. | Availability and paths vary by Windows version; moderate, targeted changes. |
| Fix problems using Windows Update | Yes | Windows 11 system files and components | Reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. | Supported Windows 11 configuration required; keep the PC connected to power and the internet. |
| DISM and System File Checker | Yes, for the online commands below | Windows image components and protected system files | Attempts to repair Windows components or replace corrupted protected files. | Run an elevated Terminal or Command Prompt; targeted repair, not a fix for every cause. |
| Startup Repair or Safe Mode | No normal startup required; use WinRE | Startup faults, or diagnosis with a limited set of services and drivers | Startup Repair attempts a startup repair; Safe Mode starts Windows in a limited state. | WinRE access may be needed; results depend on the cause. |
| Reset this PC | No; can be started from WinRE | Windows installation | Keep my files preserves personal files but removes apps and settings. Remove everything also removes personal files. | High disruption; back up first and have the BitLocker key available if needed. |
| Clean installation from installation media | No; boot from media | Windows installation on the selected drive | Can erase content on the selected drive; check Setup’s exact choices. | Requires installation media made on another working PC; most disruptive option here. |
If Windows starts, repair the smallest affected part first
For one app that is not working
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the app’s menu or entry, then choose Advanced options if it appears.
- Select Repair and check whether the app works.
- If Repair is missing or does not solve the problem, use Reset if offered. Reset is a more disruptive app-level step and can clear that app’s data or settings.
Not every app provides Repair or Reset controls. Microsoft documents the available options in Repair apps and programs in Windows.
For a Windows-wide problem or one that followed an update
Run the troubleshooter that matches the symptom. In Windows 11, look under Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters; in Windows 10, look under Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot. The available troubleshooters and labels vary by version.
If the issue began immediately after a Windows update, consider removing that update instead of undoing unrelated changes. In Windows 11, open Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates. Windows 10’s update-history route is under Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View update history. The exact choices may differ by release. Microsoft’s recovery options guide covers update removal and other recovery choices.

If a restore point exists from before the fault, System Restore can roll system files, settings, drivers, and installed programs back to that point. It does not affect personal files, but it can remove system changes made after the restore point. Review the available restore point before proceeding; see Microsoft’s System Restore guidance.
For a Windows 11 repair reinstall that keeps apps and files
On supported Windows 11 configurations, Fix problems using Windows Update reinstalls the current version of Windows to repair system files and components while preserving apps, files, and settings. It is not available on every device or release. If the option appears, open Settings > System > Recovery and select Reinstall now beside Fix problems using Windows Update. Keep the PC connected to power and the internet during the process. Details and availability are in Microsoft’s Windows Update repair reinstall instructions.
Repair corrupted Windows system files
When symptoms point to damaged Windows components or protected system files, DISM and System File Checker (SFC) are built-in repair tools. They are not general-purpose fixes for failing hardware, defects in third-party apps, or every update problem.

sfc /scannowand let the scan reach completion. SFC checks protected system files and, when possible, replaces corrupted files with cached copies. - Read the completion message. If the problem remains, use the result as one clue rather than proof of a specific cause; continue with troubleshooting that matches the symptom.
Microsoft’s current instructions and command details are in Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files.
If Windows will not start, use Windows Recovery Environment
Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) is the built-in recovery hub for a PC that cannot start normally. It may launch automatically after repeated failed starts. If Windows still opens, you can also reach it through Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now in Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now in Windows 10. Windows installation media is another way to reach recovery tools. Menus can vary by version and device. Microsoft explains access methods in its Windows Recovery Environment guide.
In WinRE, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options to find tools such as Startup Repair, update removal, System Restore, Startup Settings, and Command Prompt. Some recovery actions may require the BitLocker recovery key.

Try Startup Repair for a startup fault
- From WinRE, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair.
- Select the Windows installation if prompted, then follow the on-screen instructions.
- After the process completes, try starting Windows again. If it still cannot start, return to WinRE and choose another option that matches what changed or what the PC is doing.
Startup Repair scans for certain problems that prevent Windows from starting and may address damaged system files, boot configuration data, incompatible drivers, or registry errors. It is not a universal repair. See Microsoft’s Startup Repair instructions.
Use Safe Mode to narrow down a startup or stability problem
In WinRE, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart. After the PC restarts, choose a Safe Mode option from the list. Safe Mode loads Windows with a limited set of essential services and drivers. If the fault disappears there, that narrows the possibilities but does not identify the responsible driver or service by itself. Microsoft lists the choices in Windows startup settings.
When to reset or reinstall Windows
Understand the Reset this PC choices
Reset this PC reinstalls Windows. Choose Keep my files to preserve personal files while removing apps and settings, or Remove everything to remove personal files, apps, and settings. Cloud download gets a fresh Windows copy; Local reinstall uses files already on the device. Back up important files first, and make sure you can access the BitLocker recovery key if the device is encrypted.

Use installation media only when built-in recovery is not enough
If built-in recovery does not work, create Windows installation media on another working PC and use a bootable USB drive to reach Setup or recovery. A clean installation can erase content, so check the exact keep-or-remove choices shown in Setup and protect files you need before continuing. Manufacturer recovery media may include device-specific drivers and factory apps that generic Microsoft media may not include. Microsoft describes the media fallback in its recovery options guide and WinRE guide.
If malware may be involved
Scan with Windows Security first. If the problem continues and a clean installation is appropriate, Microsoft describes using installation media to remove Windows, personal files, apps, and settings from the selected drive. DISM and SFC repair Windows components and protected system files; they should not be treated as malware removal tools. Follow Microsoft’s recovery guidance and confirm which drive Setup will affect.

When a Windows repair may not be enough
A repair aimed at Windows cannot fix every underlying cause. If a problem continues across different repair options, affects the PC before Windows loads, or appears alongside device errors, the cause may be hardware or a more severe failure. Do not assume a successful system-file scan rules those out. Some cases require device-specific service, recovery beyond built-in tools, or a reinstall; the right next step depends on the symptoms and the data at risk.
