Error 0x800703f1 appears in reports involving Windows Update and driver updates, but the code alone does not identify the cause or a single proven fix. First determine what failed; if it is Windows Update, try its built-in troubleshooter, then Microsoft’s DISM-and-SFC repair sequence.
Identify what failed before choosing a fix
Microsoft Q&A community reports mention 0x800703f1 during Windows Update and while updating drivers. Those reports do not establish one cause for the code, and Microsoft’s retrieved general installation-error guidance does not define it specifically. The same repair path may not apply to Windows Update, a driver installer, and Windows Setup.
Record the Windows version and build, the failed update’s name or identifier, what you were doing when the error appeared, and any accompanying message. If a driver update failed, note the device and whether you started the update through Windows Update, Device Manager, or an installer from the device manufacturer. This information helps select the relevant guidance and makes escalation more useful.

Use Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guidance and choose the Settings path for your installed Windows version. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter, follow any recommended actions, and then retry the failed update. This is general Windows Update troubleshooting, not a code-specific guarantee.

Repair Windows image and system files
If the failure is in Windows Update and the troubleshooter does not resolve it, Microsoft documents running DISM and then System File Checker (SFC) to address Windows image or system-file corruption associated with update and installation problems. The commands can take several minutes.
- Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
- Run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthand wait for it to finish. - Run
sfc /scannowand let the scan complete. - Restart Windows, then retry the update.

If DISM cannot find repair files
DISM typically uses Windows Update as its source for repair files. If that source is unavailable or DISM reports that it cannot find the files, Microsoft documents using a working Windows installation or suitable files from network or removable media. The repair source must suit the installed operating-system version; follow Microsoft’s Windows image repair guidance for source selection rather than using a mismatched image.
If the error persists
For a Windows Setup or standalone driver-installer failure, use troubleshooting guidance for that installer or contact the device manufacturer; the Windows Update troubleshooter is intended for Windows Update problems. If you contact Microsoft Support or the manufacturer, provide the error, Windows version and build, failed update or installer identifier, what you already tried, and relevant logs if requested. Microsoft’s installation and upgrade error guidance offers general next steps, but its retrieved error table does not specifically list 0x800703f1.

Use caution with registry-hive workarounds
A March 2023 Microsoft Q&A community post describes rebuilding the COMPONENTS registry hive for one machine that had 0x800703f1 along with DISM and SFC failures. That is an anecdotal advanced recovery procedure, not Microsoft’s standard first-line fix, and it does not establish general safety or effectiveness. Do not overwrite registry hives based solely on the error code.

The available Microsoft guidance supports general Windows troubleshooting and repair procedures; community reports show the code in multiple update contexts. Neither establishes that 0x800703f1 by itself proves a bad driver, disk, registry hive, or hardware component. Choose the next step from the operation that failed and the results of the repair steps, rather than assuming a cause from the code alone.
