A missing Start-menu entry does not necessarily mean Windows uninstalled the app. First check Start > All apps, then verify Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Those two checks separate a hidden or unpinned listing from an app that is actually absent. If the app is installed but will not run, use its available Repair or Reset option. If it came from Microsoft Store and cannot be found or installed, check your account, region, family settings, and the app’s availability before resetting the Store.
Use the result of each check to choose the next fix
Work through the checks in order rather than reinstalling Windows or deleting data. The finding determines the least disruptive next step.

1. Check Start’s complete app list
Open Start, select All apps, and scan the list for the app’s name. In Windows 11, Microsoft describes the layout as a most-used section followed by an alphabetical list. An app that is no longer visible among pinned or frequently used items can still be present in that alphabetical section.
If you find the app
- Select the entry to launch it. This confirms that Windows can still start the installed program.
- If you want it on the first Start page, open the entry’s context menu (usually by right-clicking it) and choose Pin to Start when that command is available.
- If the app opens but behaves incorrectly, continue to the repair section below. A successful launch from All apps does not rule out damaged files or settings.
If the app is not in All apps
Do not conclude that it has been removed yet. Start’s list and Windows’ installed-app inventory are separate checks. Continue with Settings before downloading anything or using system recovery.

2. Confirm whether Windows still considers the app installed
On Windows 11, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Use the search box or scan the list for the app. Microsoft’s installation-check guidance uses this page to verify whether an app or program is present.
The app appears in Installed apps
Its absence from Start is not, by itself, evidence of an uninstall. Try the app’s available launch command from the Installed apps entry, or use another shortcut supplied by the publisher. If it launches, you can keep using that route while repairing or restoring the Start listing.
For a traditional desktop program, also check Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features. Older installers may be represented there even when their Start entry is missing. The exact wording can vary between Windows editions and between Store, desktop, and managed applications.

Treat this as a possible uninstall rather than a hidden Start item. Check Control Panel for a classic desktop installation. If it is absent there as well, obtain the program again only from its publisher’s official installation route, or from Microsoft Store when it is a Store app. Avoid random download sites that bundle unrelated software.

An app can also have been installed under a different Windows user account or by an organization’s deployment system. On a work or school PC, ask the IT department whether the program is assigned to another account or controlled by policy before reinstalling it yourself.
3. Distinguish a missing listing from an app that is failing
Launching the app from All apps or another known shortcut is a useful split in the diagnosis:
- It launches normally: the installation is usable; restore a convenient Start entry or pin it again if the command is available.
- It is listed but will not launch: use the Windows repair workflow. The problem is application health, not merely Start visibility.
- It is not listed anywhere: verify the installation source and reinstall through an official route after checking the inventory and account conditions.
4. Repair or reset an app that is listed but malfunctioning
Windows 11 exposes repair controls for some applications. They are conditional: not every program supplies these commands, and the labels can differ for Store and traditional desktop software.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find the affected app and open the More menu beside it (the three-dot button).
- Choose Advanced options if that option is offered.
- Select Repair. Windows attempts to correct the installation without removing the app’s data.
- Test the app from Start or its shortcut.
- If Repair is unavailable or does not solve the failure, return to the same page and choose Reset when offered.
Reset is more disruptive than Repair because it restores the app to its default state and can remove app data or settings. Read any warning Windows displays and make sure you know which documents or preferences are stored inside the app before confirming.

When Advanced options is missing
The absence of Advanced options is expected for some programs. It does not indicate that Settings is broken. Use the program’s own installer repair or uninstall-and-reinstall process if its publisher provides one. For organization-managed software, follow your IT department’s procedure instead of forcing a removal.
5. Fix Microsoft Store availability and account problems
If the missing app came from Microsoft Store, a search result is affected by more than the Start menu. Microsoft identifies several possible causes when an app cannot be found or installed:
- The app is not offered in your current region.
- Family settings restrict the app or its age rating.
- The Store is signed in with a different Microsoft account from the one associated with the app.
- The publisher has removed the app or it is no longer available.
Check the Store conditions first
- Open Microsoft Store and confirm that you are signed in with the intended Microsoft account.
- Search for the exact app name and check whether the listing says it is unavailable rather than merely showing an installation error.
- Verify the device’s region and any family-safety restrictions that could hide the listing.
- If the app is no longer available, look for a current official installer from its publisher. Do not assume a missing Store result is a Start-menu indexing problem.
Reset the Microsoft Store cache
If the Store itself appears stuck or its search results are not updating, Microsoft documents the built-in cache reset:

wsreset.exeand press Enter. - Wait while the reset runs. The Store should open when the process completes.
- Search for the app again and check whether its listing or install button returns.
This reset addresses Store cache behavior; it cannot restore an app that the publisher has withdrawn or that is blocked by region or account policy.

6. Reinstall only after confirming the app is genuinely absent
Reinstallation is appropriate when the app is absent from Start, Installed apps, and (for a traditional program) Control Panel, or when the publisher’s repair process requires it. Before reinstalling, identify how the app was originally obtained:
- Microsoft Store: use the same account and check availability, region, and family settings.
- Publisher installer: download the current installer only from the publisher’s official site or support channel.
- Work or school deployment: contact IT so the installation remains compliant with organizational policy.
Back up any app-specific files that are stored outside OneDrive or another known sync location. Some programs keep data in a profile folder that an uninstall or reset can remove; the location depends on the individual program and is not controlled by Start.

On either version, the diagnostic principle is the same: check Start’s full list, verify the installation in Settings or Control Panel, then match the remedy to whether the app is missing, unavailable in Store, or installed but failing.

8. Avoid broad recovery as the first response
Resetting or reinstalling Windows is a system-wide operation, not a normal fix for one missing Start entry. Microsoft’s recovery guidance recommends starting with the least disruptive suitable option and moving to more consequential choices only when the narrower fixes fail.
Before any disruptive recovery
- Back up important documents, photos, and other files.
- Confirm whether the problem affects one app or many apps.
- Record the app’s account, license, and installation source so you can restore access afterward.
- On a managed computer, consult IT before using reset or reinstall options.
A broad recovery may be warranted only when the missing app is part of a larger pattern of Windows corruption or account failure and the supported, app-specific steps have not helped. It should not be the default response to an entry that merely disappeared from Start.
9. A compact decision checklist
- Open Start > All apps and check the alphabetical list.
- If present, launch the app and pin it again if the command is available.
- If absent, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps and search for it.
- If listed, try Advanced options > Repair, then Reset only if needed and offered.
- If not listed, check Control Panel > Programs and Features for a traditional desktop program.
- If it is a Store app, verify account, region, family settings, and current availability.
- Use
Windows+R,wsreset.exeonly when the Store itself needs its cache reset. - Reinstall through an official source only after confirming that the app is genuinely absent or its supported repair path requires reinstallation.
- Back up files and seek IT help before any system-wide recovery on a managed or data-critical PC.
What the symptom tells you
The Start menu is only one view of an application. An app in All apps is still registered with Start; an app in Installed apps is still recognized by Windows even if its Start listing is missing; and an app absent from both places needs an installation or availability check. Store account and regional rules can make a valid app invisible, while Repair and Reset address an app that is present but unhealthy. Following those distinctions restores access with less risk than jumping straight to a Windows reset.
