Windows 11 Widgets problems usually fall into three different categories: the taskbar button is hidden, the board opens but stays empty, or only one or two web-backed widgets fail. Identify which symptom you have before changing anything. Turn the taskbar control on, update the Windows Web Experience Pack and Start Experiences App, verify Microsoft Edge for Edge-dependent content, and check whether an administrator has disabled Widgets. These are the supported, low-risk checks documented by Microsoft.
First, identify what is actually broken
Use the symptom scope to choose the right check. A missing taskbar icon does not prove that the Widgets service is broken, and a weather tile that will not load does not necessarily mean the entire board has failed. Separating access, delivery components, web dependencies, and policy prevents you from making unrelated changes.

Before troubleshooting, note whether the issue affects the whole board or selected widgets, when it started, and the exact wording of any error. Those details matter if you eventually need Microsoft Support or your organization’s IT team. Also note whether the board opens at all with Windows key + W. That one observation distinguishes a hidden shortcut from a loading failure.

1. Restore a Widgets button that is only hidden
The taskbar button has its own setting. It can be disabled even when the board itself works normally, so start here when the icon has disappeared.
- Open Settings.
- Select Personalization, then Taskbar.
- Under Taskbar items, turn Widgets on.
- Press Windows key + W. This shortcut opens the Widgets board without using the taskbar button.
If the keyboard shortcut opens a populated board, the immediate fault was taskbar access, not content loading. You can leave the button enabled or use the shortcut if you prefer. If the shortcut opens an empty or spinning board, the taskbar setting was not the underlying problem; continue with the component and content checks below.
There are two useful outcomes from this test. A button that returns after the toggle confirms that the feature was available but hidden. A button that is not listed at all, or a control that refuses to stay enabled, suggests a different issue, especially on a work or school device where policy can control Widgets. Do not jump to reinstalling Windows components until you know which of those outcomes you have.
2. Update the components that deliver Widgets
Microsoft identifies the Windows Web Experience Pack as an app that helps deliver and update Windows features such as Widgets. Microsoft also says that Widgets and Discover dashboards require current versions of both the Windows Web Experience Pack and the Start Experiences App. Keeping only one of them current may not satisfy that requirement.
Update Windows Web Experience Pack in Microsoft Store
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Select Library.
- Find Windows Web Experience Pack.
- Select Update if that button is offered.
If there is no Update button, Microsoft says the latest version is already installed. That does not mean the board is guaranteed to work, but it tells you not to keep pressing a nonexistent repair control. Keep Store app updates enabled if you want future updates to install automatically. The pack normally updates through Microsoft Store rather than through a special Widgets repair command.
If the pack is listed in the Library but appears to be waiting, allow the Store operation to finish before testing. If the Store offers no update, move on instead of downloading an unrelated installer from a third-party site. The supported check is the Store’s own Library entry and its Update status.
Check Start Experiences App and Windows Update
While Microsoft Store is open, check for an update to Start Experiences App, the second component Microsoft names for Widgets and Discover dashboards. Then open Windows Settings and install any available Windows updates. Restart the PC after the component and system updates finish, and test Widgets again with Windows key + W.
Restarting matters because you want to test the newly delivered components after Windows has completed servicing, not while an update is still pending. Retest the same board and the same widgets you observed earlier. If the whole board fills in, the outdated delivery components were a plausible cause. If only one online tile remains blank, switch to the Edge and scope checks rather than repeating the Store update cycle.

Do not infer that an update is missing merely because the board was blank once. Store delivery and Windows feature rollouts can vary by device, and the labels can change with servicing. The practical test is whether Library offers an update and whether the board works after restarting. Microsoft does not specify a universal reset command that should be run when these entries are already current.
3. Check Microsoft Edge when only web-backed widgets fail
Some Widgets and the News Feed depend on Microsoft Edge. Microsoft advises keeping Edge installed and updated; uninstalling it stops Edge-backed widgets from working. This dependency applies to particular content types, not necessarily to every blank Widgets board.
Use the scope of the failure
- If weather, stocks, sports, calendar, News Feed, or another online tile is the only failure, check Edge first.
- If every tile is blank, update the Windows Web Experience Pack and Start Experiences App before assuming Edge is the cause.
- If the board opens but a single service shows an error, record that service and the wording rather than repeatedly changing unrelated Windows settings.
- If some tiles populate and others do not, compare the affected tiles. A shared web-backed dependency is more informative than the fact that Widgets opened successfully.
Verify Edge itself
- Confirm that Microsoft Edge is still installed. Some Widgets content will not work if it has been removed.
- Open Edge and install any offered browser update.
- Visit an ordinary website to test network access independently of Widgets.
- If pages display incorrectly in Edge, restart the browser and the device. Microsoft Edge troubleshooting also recommends clearing cached data for page-display problems.
A normal web page loading in Edge does not guarantee that every widget service will respond, but it separates a general browser or network problem from a Widgets-specific problem. Conversely, an Edge page failure should be fixed before judging the affected web-backed tile. Do not present Edge as a guaranteed cure for a board in which every card is blank; Microsoft describes it as a dependency for some widgets and the News Feed.
When testing, use an ordinary page rather than relying on the Widgets board itself. If ordinary pages fail, you have a browser or network symptom to report separately. If they load normally while one card remains empty, capture the card name and any message and continue with the supported component and escalation steps.
4. Check whether an organization has disabled Widgets
On a work or school computer, an administrator can control whether Widgets is allowed. The relevant Microsoft policy is named Allow widgets. Its documented Group Policy location is:
Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Widgets
Microsoft also documents a device configuration service provider path under NewsAndInterests/AllowNewsAndInterests. These controls can make Widgets disappear from taskbar settings or prevent you from changing its state. A policy explanation is especially likely when the problem affects several similarly managed computers or begins after an organization changes its configuration.

Signs that policy is involved
- Widgets is absent from the Taskbar items list on a managed device.
- The setting is present but locked, immediately reverts, or cannot be enabled.
- The issue began after an employer or school changed device management settings.
- Other users with the same organization-managed configuration have the same result.
- The control behaves differently when you are signed in to a managed device than it does on an unmanaged personal PC.
Contact the organization’s administrator in these cases. Ask whether the Allow widgets policy is enabled for your device or user group, and include the Windows build and exact symptom. Do not apply registry edits or unofficial policy workarounds as a first-line fix; a managed policy will normally override local changes, and changing it can violate your organization’s support rules.

On a personal device, the absence of a policy setting does not by itself prove that a policy is responsible. Use the taskbar, Store, Windows Update, and Edge checks first. The policy paths are useful primarily for administrators and for users whose organization controls the PC.
5. Retest in a controlled order
After each change, test the same way so you know which condition changed. A useful sequence is:
- Press Windows key + W and note whether the board opens.
- Check whether the entire board is empty or only named widgets fail.
- Open an ordinary page in Microsoft Edge if the failing content is web-backed.
- Restart Windows after Store or system updates.
- Open Widgets again and record the result and any error text.
A board that becomes populated after the taskbar toggle confirms an access-setting issue. A board that changes after the Store updates points to an outdated delivery component. A single tile that remains unavailable while other tiles work should be treated as a limited service or dependency problem, not proof that the whole Widgets feature is damaged.
Use the same account and device state for each retest. Record whether the taskbar icon is visible, whether the shortcut opens the board, and which cards appear. This simple before-and-after record prevents a common mistake: assuming a fix worked because the board opened, even though the particular widget that prompted the troubleshooting is still missing.
If an update is offered for both named components, install both before drawing a conclusion. Microsoft specifically pairs the Windows Web Experience Pack and Start Experiences App in its requirement for Widgets and Discover dashboards. If neither offers an update and Edge pages load normally, escalating with precise scope is more useful than searching for unsupported reset commands.
6. What to collect before escalating
Microsoft’s published guidance does not provide one universal repair tree, reset command, or guaranteed fix for every blank or missing Widgets case. If the supported checks do not resolve the issue, provide useful diagnostic facts instead of repeatedly reinstalling unrelated software.
- The Windows edition, version, and build number.
- Whether the taskbar button is missing, the board is blank, or only selected widgets fail.
- Whether Windows key + W opens the board.
- The installed or available update status for Windows Web Experience Pack and Start Experiences App.
- Whether Microsoft Edge is installed, updated, and able to open ordinary pages.
- Whether the device is managed by an employer or school.
- When the problem began and whether it followed a Windows, Store, Edge, or policy change.
- The exact error text, if any.
- Whether the same symptom occurs for other users or on other similarly managed devices.
Use Microsoft Support for a personal device or send these details to the organization’s IT team for a managed device. Include the symptom scope in the first sentence: “the button is missing,” “the board is blank,” or “only the News Feed is empty.” That is more actionable than saying only that “Widgets are broken.”

The settings labels and component behavior can change as Windows receives servicing and feature rollouts, so include the current build rather than describing the system only as “Windows 11.” Mention whether Microsoft Store showed an Update button or reported that the current version was installed. Also state whether restarting after updates changed anything. These details help support distinguish an access setting from a delivery, browser, or policy condition.

Common wrong turns to avoid
Assuming a missing icon means Widgets is uninstalled
The taskbar button is independently configurable. Check Taskbar items and the keyboard shortcut before attempting component changes. A hidden button and a missing board are different symptoms with different first checks.
Blaming Edge for every blank board
Edge is a dependency for some widgets and the News Feed. It is not evidence that Edge explains a board in which all content is absent, especially when the browser opens ordinary pages normally. Test the scope before changing browser settings.
Installing Edge solely as a guaranteed Widgets repair
Keeping Edge installed and updated is appropriate for Edge-backed content, but Microsoft does not say that reinstalling Edge fixes every Widgets failure. If all cards are blank, check the Windows Web Experience Pack and Start Experiences App as well.
Using registry edits as a routine repair
The supported material identifies a policy and its management paths but does not recommend a registry hack for ordinary users. Local edits can be overwritten by device management and can create a separate configuration problem.
Repeating updates without recording the result
If the Store reports that the latest version is installed, repeatedly searching for the same update is unlikely to add useful information. Record that status, restart once after applicable updates, and move to the next symptom-appropriate check.
Installing a generic “PC repair” utility
The documented remedies involve Windows settings, Microsoft Store components, Edge, Windows Update, and organization policy. A third-party cleaner or repair utility is not established as a solution for this specific failure and may change settings you need to diagnose the problem.

Microsoft’s stated requirement
Microsoft Support’s “Stay up to date with Widgets in Windows” FAQ answers “What can I do if Widgets isn’t working well?” with this requirement: “For Widgets and Discover dashboards to work as expected, you need the latest updates for both the Windows Web Experience Pack and Start Experiences App.” Treat that as the baseline update check, then use symptom scope to decide whether taskbar visibility, Edge, or device policy needs attention.
This requirement is a baseline, not a promise that updating both components resolves every device. The same FAQ identifies Edge as necessary for some widgets and the News Feed, while Microsoft’s taskbar guidance documents a separate visibility control. Checking all three dimensions—component updates, Edge-backed loading, and taskbar access—gives you a supported way to narrow the fault without making unsupported system changes.
