The safest way to fix a Windows 11 update problem is to choose the repair path that matches the computer’s state. If the desktop still opens, back up your files, record the exact Windows Update error, run Microsoft’s automated troubleshooter in Get Help, and then use the error-specific remedy. If Windows will not start, work from Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE), beginning with Startup Repair or Uninstall Updates. On supported PCs, Microsoft’s “Fix problems using Windows Update” reinstall can repair Windows while preserving apps, files, and settings.
Do not begin by resetting or clean-installing Windows. Those options are more disruptive than the built-in repairs described below, and a security update should not be removed casually. A backup and the exact error code make every later decision safer.
First, identify which situation you have
Use this decision table before changing anything. The same update error can require a different procedure depending on whether Windows still reaches the desktop.
| What you see | Start here | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Windows opens normally, but an update fails to download or install | Back up files, capture the code, then run the Windows Update troubleshooter in Get Help. | The automated check is Microsoft’s recommended first step for Windows 11. |
| Windows opens, and the problem began immediately after one update | Try the repair reinstall first if it is available; otherwise review Update history and consider removing the implicated update. | A recent update may be the trigger, but removing an update has limits and security implications. |
| The computer restarts repeatedly or never reaches the sign-in screen | Enter Windows RE and use Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair. | Startup Repair addresses certain startup problems without requiring a running desktop. |
| Windows RE opens, but startup repair does not resolve an update-related failure | Use Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates. | This targets a recent update rather than repairing unrelated system components. |
| The PC cannot reach Windows RE | Create or use Windows installation media with Microsoft’s Media Creation Tool. | Installation media supplies recovery tools when the local recovery environment is unavailable. |
These tools are not guarantees. A BitLocker recovery prompt, a failed drive, memory fault, or other hardware problem can require device-specific support that update troubleshooting alone cannot provide.

Protect your files and record the failure
Back up before repairs
Copy important personal files before running repair commands or removing an update. Microsoft identifies two practical choices:
- Copy documents, photos, and other irreplaceable files to a USB drive.
- Sync or upload them to OneDrive.
Back up while Windows is still usable. If the PC will not boot, use a working computer and appropriate recovery or installation media where possible. A backup is not required to run the built-in troubleshooter, DISM, SFC, Startup Repair, or Uninstall Updates, but it protects you if the problem is broader than Windows Update.
Capture the exact error
Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history and write down the failed update, the displayed status, and the complete error code. Also note whether the failure occurs while downloading, during installation, or after a restart. If the desktop opens only intermittently, photograph the code or save it in a text file before restarting.
The code is a clue, not proof of one cause. It helps you select Microsoft’s current error-specific instructions instead of repeating unrelated fixes.
If Windows still opens
1. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter in Get Help
- Open Get Help from the Start menu or Start search.
- Run the automated Windows Update troubleshooter for Windows 11.
- Apply any action it recommends and allow it to finish.
- Restart the PC.
- Open Settings > Windows Update and select the option to check for updates again.
If the troubleshooter reports that it could not resolve the issue, move to the guidance for the exact error rather than repeatedly running the same check.
2. Use the error code to choose the next branch
| Error or symptom | What Microsoft associates it with | Next investigation |
|---|---|---|
0xC1900101 |
Possible driver incompatibility | Check drivers, disconnect unnecessary peripherals, and follow Microsoft’s instructions for that code. Do not assume every occurrence has the same driver cause. |
0x800f0922 |
Insufficient storage is one possibility identified by Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance | Check available space on the system drive and remove only files you can safely recreate or restore. Retry after freeing space and restarting. |
| Other codes involving update services or cache | Problems with update services, cache, or an interrupted download may be involved | Use Microsoft’s code-specific steps; avoid deleting service folders or changing service settings without those instructions. |
| Codes indicating file or configuration corruption | Damaged system files or components may be involved | Run DISM followed by SFC from an elevated Command Prompt, as shown below. |
Microsoft’s error mappings are updated over time. If your code is not listed here, use the complete code in Microsoft Support’s Windows Update troubleshooting guidance and follow the branch for that code.

3. Check storage, restart, and remove obvious conflicts
Low free space can stop an update before installation completes. Check the available space on the Windows system drive and make room before trying again. Then restart Windows and retry the update; a restart clears some pending operations and returns update services to a clean state.
Software conflicts can also interrupt an installation. Microsoft discusses a clean restart for isolating third-party software. Use that approach only when ordinary restarting and the error-specific instructions have not helped, and restore the normal startup configuration after testing. If Microsoft’s instructions for your error call for temporarily pausing or removing antivirus software, make sure you know how to restore protection and reinstall or re-enable it before proceeding. Do not leave the PC unprotected after the test.
4. Check drivers when the code or symptoms point there
A driver incompatibility is a common interpretation of 0xC1900101, but the code does not identify a particular device by itself. Review recent driver changes and follow the Windows Update guidance for the code. Disconnect nonessential peripherals during the update if the instructions recommend it, and reconnect them after Windows is stable. Obtain replacement drivers through the device manufacturer’s supported channel rather than using an unrelated driver package.
5. Repair corrupted components with DISM and SFC
Use these commands after the automated and basic checks, not as the opening move. They require an elevated Command Prompt and can take time; let each command finish before starting the next.
- Open Start, type Command Prompt, select Run as administrator, and approve the permission prompt.
- Run the component repair command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to complete. Do not close the window because progress appears stalled at times.
- Run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow
- Allow SFC to reach 100 percent, close the Command Prompt, restart Windows, and check Windows Update again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store that supplies repair files; SFC then checks protected system files against that repaired store. If either command reports an error, preserve the exact message and use Microsoft’s instructions for that result rather than repeating commands indefinitely.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems6. Use “Fix problems using Windows Update” when it is available
Supported Windows 11 installations may show a repair reinstall at Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now. Microsoft says this reinstalls the current Windows version to repair system files and components while preserving installed apps, personal files, and settings.

- Open Settings > System > Recovery.
- Select Reinstall now under Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Follow the on-screen confirmation and allow Windows to restart as needed.
- After Windows returns, open Settings > Windows Update and check the update status.
The option is not exposed on every Windows 11 build or configuration. If you do not see it, that absence does not mean the installation is damaged; use the other applicable path instead. This repair reinstall is less disruptive than Reset this PC or a clean installation, but you should still keep the backup made before troubleshooting.
7. Remove a recent update only when the timing and risk make sense
If the computer worked until one particular update installed, review it through Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates. Select the relevant update only if Windows permits its removal and Microsoft’s guidance for the error supports that choice.
Some updates cannot be uninstalled. Microsoft also warns that removing a security update carries risk because it can restore a vulnerability. Its guidance recommends trying the Windows 11 repair reinstall first when that option is available. After an uninstall, restart and check whether the original symptom has changed; do not treat the removal as a permanent solution if the update is required for security or compatibility.

Enter Windows Recovery Environment
Windows RE is the recovery interface used when the normal desktop is unavailable. If Windows enters it automatically after failed starts, choose Troubleshoot and then Advanced options. If you can still reach the sign-in screen or Settings occasionally, use the available Windows recovery command to restart into the recovery environment rather than relying on repeated forced shutdowns.
Do not interrupt a normal update simply because the screen appears unchanged, and do not use model-specific function-key combinations without instructions from the PC manufacturer. The correct recovery entry method varies by device.
Try Startup Repair for a startup failure
From Windows RE, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair, then choose the Windows installation when prompted. Microsoft Support describes it this way: “Startup Repair is a Windows recovery tool that can fix certain system problems that might prevent Windows from starting.”

Startup Repair diagnoses and attempts to correct certain boot problems. It does not guarantee that an update-related failure will be fixed, and it is not a replacement for a hardware diagnosis. Let the process complete, then restart once and check whether Windows reaches the sign-in screen.

Use Uninstall Updates when a recent update clearly preceded the boot failure
If the machine stopped booting immediately after an update and Startup Repair did not help, return to Troubleshoot > Advanced options and choose Uninstall Updates. Select the available update-removal option that matches the failure and follow the prompts.
The same limits apply as in the desktop procedure: some updates cannot be removed, and removing a security update can expose the computer to a vulnerability. If the update cannot be removed or the boot problem remains, continue with installation-media recovery or obtain support for the device.
Use installation media when local recovery is unavailable
When the PC cannot enter Windows RE and no recovery drive or repair disc is available, Microsoft describes creating Windows installation media with the Media Creation Tool on another working computer. A USB flash drive is an optional physical way to carry that media; the capacity and erasure requirements depend on Microsoft’s current media instructions.
- On a working PC, obtain Microsoft’s Windows installation-media creation tool.
- Prepare a blank USB drive that meets the tool’s requirements. Its existing contents may be erased, so copy anything important from it first.
- Use the tool to create the Windows installation media.
- Connect the media to the affected PC and start it using the manufacturer’s documented boot-selection procedure.
- Choose the recovery option rather than starting a new installation when your goal is to repair the existing Windows installation.
- Use the available Windows RE tools, including Startup Repair or Uninstall Updates, and follow Microsoft’s on-screen instructions.
Do not select a clean installation unless you have deliberately backed up your data and accepted that it is more disruptive. If the media cannot see the Windows installation, the drive is encrypted, or the PC reports a hardware error, stop and seek device-specific help.
Choose the least disruptive effective option
| Option | When it fits | Effect on your installation | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Get Help Windows Update troubleshooter | Windows opens and the cause is not yet clear | Automated checks and recommended corrections | It may not resolve code-specific or hardware problems. |
| Error-specific checks, storage, drivers, or clean restart | The code or symptoms identify a likely category | Targets services, space, software conflicts, or drivers | Follow the exact Microsoft branch; do not make unrelated system changes. |
| DISM followed by SFC | System files or components may be corrupted | Repairs Windows components and protected files | Commands must run elevated and in the stated order. |
| Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now | Supported Windows 11 PC with persistent system-file or component problems | Microsoft says it preserves apps, files, and settings | Power and internet are required; availability varies by build and configuration. |
| Uninstall Updates | A specific recent update clearly precedes the failure | Removes an update when Windows permits it | Some updates cannot be removed; security removal has risk. |
| Startup Repair | Windows does not boot and Windows RE is available | Attempts to fix certain startup problems | It is not guaranteed to repair every update or hardware failure. |
| Installation-media recovery | Windows RE is unavailable | Provides external access to recovery tools | Creating media can erase the USB drive; a clean install is substantially more disruptive. |
Use the highest option in this table that matches the problem. Moving to a more disruptive tool before preserving files or identifying the error can remove useful evidence and create avoidable risk.

Common failure patterns and what to do next
The update fails during download
Record the code, restart, check available storage, and run the Get Help troubleshooter. If Microsoft associates the code with an update service, cache, or interrupted download, follow that code-specific procedure. Do not delete update-cache directories merely because a download failed; use Microsoft’s documented reset steps for your exact code.
The update downloads but fails during installation
Check for enough system-drive space, review driver-related guidance, and run DISM followed by SFC if corruption is indicated. A clean restart can isolate software conflicts when Microsoft recommends it. Retry only after the selected repair has completed and Windows has restarted.
The computer restarts, then rolls back the update
Let the rollback finish rather than repeatedly powering off the machine. Once Windows opens, capture the error in Update history, run the troubleshooter, and follow the code-specific branch. If the rollback began immediately after one update, consider the repair reinstall before attempting to uninstall a security update.
The PC boots only after removing an update
Back up files while Windows is usable and identify the removed update. Check Microsoft’s current guidance for that update and your error code; removal may be temporary and may leave the PC without an important security fix. Do not repeatedly uninstall and reinstall the same update without addressing the underlying driver, storage, service, or file problem.
Recovery asks for a BitLocker key
A BitLocker recovery prompt is an encryption-recovery condition, not an ordinary Windows Update error. The material covered here does not provide a universal key-retrieval or hardware procedure. Use the organization’s or Microsoft’s account and device-recovery process, and do not erase the drive while you are still trying to preserve files.
When to stop troubleshooting and get specialized help
- The drive is not detected, reports repeated read errors, or makes unusual noises.
- Windows shows a BitLocker recovery prompt and you cannot locate the recovery key.
- Startup Repair and Uninstall Updates both fail, and installation media cannot access the existing installation.
- The same update error returns after the repair reinstall and component checks.
- The PC loses power, overheats, or shows a memory, storage, or motherboard warning during the process.
For a managed work or school PC, contact the administrator before removing updates or changing security software. For a personal PC, provide the technician with the update name, exact error code, when the failure started, which recovery tools ran, and their displayed results. That record prevents repeating steps and helps separate Windows corruption from a hardware fault.
Quick Recap
A practical repair checklist
- Back up personal files to USB or OneDrive if Windows is usable.
- Record the failed update, timing, status message, and exact error code from Update history.
- Decide whether Windows reaches the desktop, only reaches Windows RE, or does not reach either.
- If the desktop opens, run the automated Windows Update troubleshooter in Get Help and restart.
- Follow the code-specific path for storage, drivers, services, cache, or configuration problems.
- Run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth, thensfc /scannow, when corrupted components or files are suspected. - Use Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now if the supported option appears.
- Only then consider Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates, weighing the security risk.
- If Windows will not boot, use Windows RE > Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair, followed by Uninstall Updates when the timing points to a recent update.
- If local recovery is unavailable, create Windows installation media and use it for recovery rather than immediately choosing a clean installation.
