Do not start by installing a random driver. First record your Linux release and kernel, identify the exact wireless, audio, or graphics hardware, and check whether the kernel detects it. Then follow the branch for the failing device: Wi‑Fi requires enabled radio, firmware, and a working network stack; sound requires separating ALSA detection from output routing and mute controls; graphics requires separating display mode-setting from 3D acceleration and desktop userspace. “Old PC” is not a hardware specification, so a safe fix depends on the chipset, distribution, kernel, and firmware available for your installation.

Start with evidence, not a guessed driver

A Linux installation can leave a device unusable at several different layers. The hardware may be absent from the bus, detected without a driver, detected with missing firmware, or working while the desktop has selected the wrong output or mode. Treat those as different problems. Installing a package intended for another chipset can hide the real failure and make recovery harder.

Record the distribution and kernel

Open a terminal and save the output of these commands:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
cat /etc/os-release
uname -r
lspci -nnk
lsusb

/etc/os-release identifies the distribution and release. uname -r records the running kernel. lspci -nnk shows PCI hardware IDs and, when available, the kernel driver in use; it is especially useful for internal Wi‑Fi, audio controllers, and GPUs. lsusb lists USB devices and their vendor/product IDs, which are essential for a USB Wi‑Fi adapter or USB sound device.

Preserve kernel messages

Save messages from the current boot before rebooting:

dmesg -T > dmesg.txt
journalctl -k -b > kernel-boot.txt

Some distributions restrict dmesg to administrators; use sudo dmesg -T if necessary. Search the saved files for the device name, its driver, firmware, failed, timeout, drm, snd, or wlan. Linux Wireless troubleshooting guidance asks for the exact software versions, hardware identifiers, driver information, and kernel messages rather than a vague description such as “my old Wi‑Fi is broken.” Logs can contain sensitive identifiers, including a peer’s MAC address, so remove private data before posting them publicly.

Check the physical controls first

  • For a laptop, move the wireless switch or press the function key that controls radio power. A disabled radio cannot be repaired by installing a package.
  • For sound, check the speaker cable, amplifier input, headphone insertion, and any hardware mute key.
  • For graphics, select the correct monitor input and test another cable or port before changing drivers.

Wi‑Fi not working after installing Linux

Work from the adapter outward: presence, radio state, driver and firmware, then connection software. Do not assume the interface is named wlan0; modern systems often use a predictable name such as wlp2s0.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

1. Confirm that the adapter exists

For an internal adapter, run:

lspci -nnk | grep -A3 -i -E 'network|wireless|ethernet'

For a USB adapter, run:

lsusb

If the device is absent from both listings, check BIOS/UEFI device settings, the physical connection, and whether the laptop’s wireless switch is off. A driver package cannot make hardware that the bus does not enumerate suddenly appear. If the device is listed, note its numeric ID and the “Kernel driver in use” and “Kernel modules” lines from lspci -nnk.

2. Check hardware and software radio blocks

rfkill list

Each radio should show an unblocked state. A hard blocked result means a physical switch, function key, firmware setting, or platform-level control has disabled the radio. Toggle the switch, enable wireless in firmware, and reboot if the platform requires it. A soft blocked result can usually be cleared with the desktop wireless control or, where appropriate, sudo rfkill unblock wifi. If it immediately becomes blocked again, look for a laptop hot-key utility or power-management rule rather than repeatedly installing drivers.

3. Look for driver and firmware failures

dmesg -T | grep -i -E 'firmware|wifi|wlan|802.11|iwlwifi|ath|brcm|rtl|mt76'

Messages such as “failed to load firmware,” “no suitable firmware,” or repeated device resets point to the firmware package or kernel support. The exact package name varies by distribution and chipset. Use your distribution’s official repositories and the hardware ID you recorded; examples may include a general Linux firmware bundle or a chipset-specific firmware package, but a package name from another release is not automatically correct.

Update the distribution’s package metadata and installed kernel and firmware using its normal tools. On Debian-based systems this commonly means apt; Fedora-family systems use dnf; Arch-based systems use pacman. The labels and package split differ between releases, so search the repository for the firmware name shown in the kernel message instead of copying a command intended for another distribution. Reboot into the newly installed kernel, then repeat lspci -nnk and the log check.

4. Separate a driver problem from a connection problem

If the interface appears in ip link or iw dev, the kernel has created a network device. That does not prove that NetworkManager, another network service, or the WPA supplicant can connect.

ip link
 iw dev
 iw dev <interface> scan

Replace <interface> with the name shown by iw dev. A successful scan indicates that the radio and driver can at least discover access points. If scanning fails with a firmware or timeout message, return to the driver and kernel branch. If scanning works but the desktop cannot authenticate or obtain an address, inspect the network service, saved credentials, regulatory domain, and access-point security settings.

To isolate the network manager, Linux Wireless troubleshooting recommends trying the lower-level tools directly. Stop the desktop network service temporarily, then run iw and a test wpa_supplicant configuration using the interface name and a protected configuration file. Do not run two connection managers at the same time: they can fight over the interface and create misleading failures. Restore the normal service after the test. Avoid old iwconfig-based instructions; iw is the modern wireless tool.

5. Check support before replacing the internal adapter

If the chipset is detected but your installed kernel has no usable driver or firmware, verify support for that exact chipset, your distribution release, and your kernel before buying anything. “Compatible with Linux” on a retail listing is not enough: USB devices can change chipset revisions without changing the product name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A USB Wi‑Fi adapter is a fallback, not a universal cure. Check all of the following:

  • Exact USB vendor/product ID and chipset revision.
  • In-kernel driver support for the kernel you intend to run.
  • Firmware availability in your distribution’s repositories.
  • Physical clearance, antenna requirements, and whether the adapter must remain plugged in during boot.
  • Whether the problem is actually a hard radio block or a disabled internal device, which an external adapter will not fix.

Only after those checks should you consider optional replacement hardware. No particular retail model is guaranteed merely because its name appears in a compatibility list.

No sound after installing Linux

Audio failures divide cleanly into two cases: Linux does not see a sound card at all, or Linux sees it but the desktop is sending audio to the wrong device or a muted mixer. Start with ALSA, the kernel audio layer, before changing desktop settings.

  • This network transceiver supports Windows 11, 10, 8.1, 8, 7, XP/ Mac OS X 10.9-10.14

1. Establish whether ALSA sees a card

cat /proc/asound/cards
aplay -l
cat /proc/asound/pcm

/proc/asound/cards lists configured cards. aplay -l lists playback hardware and exposes the card/device numbers. /proc/asound/pcm shows PCM streams and their state. Together they tell you whether the kernel created an audio device, not whether the desktop selected it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If all three are empty or show no expected controller, inspect lspci -nnk for the audio controller and review kernel messages:

dmesg -T | grep -i -E 'snd|alsa|audio|codec|firmware|hda|usb'

An absent card can result from disabled firmware settings, a missing kernel module, unsupported hardware, a codec initialization error, or missing firmware. Match the investigation to the exact controller and distribution package set. Do not copy a driver from a different Linux release or install a vendor Windows driver.

2. Unmute the hardware mixer

Run alsamixer, choose the correct card if more than one is present, and inspect the Master, Speaker, Headphone, and relevant codec controls. A control marked MM is muted; press M to toggle it and raise the level with the arrow keys. Some old codecs expose separate speaker and headphone switches, so raising only Master may not produce sound.

3. Select the correct desktop output

Modern desktops may use PulseAudio-compatible tools or PipeWire. In the desktop sound panel, select the intended analog speakers, headphones, HDMI, or DisplayPort sink. With a compatible command-line tool, pactl list short sinks shows available outputs and their names; a sink can exist even when it is not the default.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a basic test, play a known local audio file or use the desktop test-sound control. Check application-specific volume sliders and browser mute states. If the meter moves but the speakers are silent, the failure is usually routing, a muted mixer control, a disconnected output, or the wrong profile rather than a missing kernel driver.

4. Treat HDMI and DisplayPort as separate outputs

Digital display audio depends on the monitor or receiver advertising its capabilities. Inspect the ELD information exposed under paths such as /proc/asound/card*/eld#* when the display is connected. An absent or invalid ELD can leave an HDMI/DisplayPort profile unavailable. Confirm that the monitor is powered on, the cable is connected before login, and the desktop has selected the display sink rather than internal speakers.

5. Escalate PCM problems carefully

The kernel ALSA documentation states: “When the problem is related with PCM, first try to turn on xrun_debug mode.” This is specialist diagnostic guidance for underrun/overrun and stream-timing problems, not a first-line command for every silent speaker. Use it only after confirming the card, PCM device, mixer, and selected output, and follow the module-parameter instructions for your kernel. Record the resulting messages and turn verbose debugging back off after testing.

Linux graphics driver not working on an old PC

A blank screen, a usable desktop at the wrong resolution, and poor 3D performance are different failures. Check GPU detection and kernel initialization before changing desktop settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Identify the GPU and loaded driver

lspci -nnk | grep -A3 -E 'VGA|3D|Display'
dmesg -T | grep -i -E 'drm|i915|amdgpu|radeon|firmware|gpu'

Record the GPU’s numeric ID and the “Kernel driver in use” line. A desktop that starts proves only that some display path works; it does not prove that hardware acceleration is active.

2. Classify the symptom

  • Blank screen or no signal: investigate cable/input selection, display detection, kernel mode-setting, firmware, and driver initialization.
  • Low or missing resolution: determine whether the monitor was detected and whether the kernel exposed the required modes. On X11, xrandr --query lists detected outputs and modes; Wayland desktops expose this information through their display settings instead.
  • Desktop works but is slow or lacks 3D features: investigate acceleration and userspace libraries separately from basic mode-setting.

Do not infer acceleration from a successful login. Software rendering can draw a desktop while games, video playback, or compositing remain unusable.

3. Respect GPU-generation differences

Not every old Intel GPU uses the same support path. The kernel’s i915 driver covers many integrated generations, but there are exceptions among very early chipsets and certain system-on-chip platforms; some of those have basic support through gma500. Identify the exact model before deciding that an i915 option or package is appropriate.

AMD systems also vary by generation and driver path. The useful first evidence is the initialization sequence in dmesg: look for which DRM component loaded, whether firmware was requested, and whether the display engine reported errors. The presence of an amdgpu or radeon line alone is not proof that mode-setting and acceleration completed successfully.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Check firmware, kernel, and desktop layers independently

If logs show missing firmware, install the distribution’s matching firmware package and reboot. If the driver is present but initialization fails, test the newest kernel supplied by your distribution and, if the old hardware regressed, the previous kernel entry in the boot menu. Do not remove the known-working kernel until the replacement is confirmed.

If kernel initialization succeeds but the desktop still offers poor modes or no acceleration, inspect the display server and graphics userspace packages. Keep the test distribution-supported; random proprietary installers can overwrite libraries and make future kernel updates harder. Capture the exact error and driver line before changing a configuration file.

How to choose the next fix

Use the evidence in this table to choose a branch instead of trying every suggestion at once.

What you observe Most likely layer Next check
Device absent from lspci and lsusb Physical connection, firmware setting, or disabled hardware Check BIOS/UEFI, switches, cables, and the bus; a package cannot repair an unenumerated device.
Device listed, no “Kernel driver in use” Kernel support or module loading Compare the exact ID with the installed kernel’s support and inspect dmesg for probe errors.
Driver listed, firmware error in logs Firmware package or version mismatch Install the firmware package from the distribution release and reboot into the intended kernel.
Wi‑Fi interface exists but scans fail Radio block, firmware, driver, or regulatory issue Run rfkill list, iw dev, and inspect wireless messages.
Wi‑Fi scans succeed but login fails Network manager, supplicant, credentials, or access-point security Test with iw and a controlled wpa_supplicant run, with only one manager active.
ALSA card is absent Audio detection, module, codec, firmware, or kernel Check lspci -nnk and dmesg for snd, codec, and firmware errors.
ALSA card exists but no sound Mute, profile, routing, or physical output Use alsamixer, select the correct desktop sink, and verify speakers or HDMI.
GPU appears and desktop starts at low resolution Mode-setting, monitor detection, or userspace mode support Inspect DRM logs and available output modes; test cable and monitor input.
Desktop works but acceleration is poor GPU driver feature level or graphics userspace Verify the exact GPU generation, driver initialization, firmware, and acceleration layer separately.

A safe, distribution-aware repair order

  1. Write down the environment: distribution release, running kernel, PCI/USB IDs, and relevant boot messages.
  2. Confirm physical state: switches, BIOS/UEFI settings, cables, monitor input, speaker connection, and hardware mute.
  3. Confirm enumeration: use lspci -nnk, lsusb, rfkill list, /proc/asound/cards, or GPU-specific DRM messages.
  4. Install only distribution-provided updates: update package metadata, kernel, and matching firmware using the tools for your release.
  5. Reboot and re-check: record whether the driver line, firmware message, interface, card, or display mode changed.
  6. Move up the stack: test NetworkManager or the supplicant after Wi‑Fi scanning works; test desktop audio routing after ALSA sees a card; test display settings after DRM initialization succeeds.
  7. Keep a recovery path: retain the previous kernel and avoid deleting configuration or packages until the new state is verified.

When replacement hardware is the sensible answer

Replacement is reasonable when the internal device is physically failing or its exact chipset has no usable driver and firmware for the Linux release you need. It is not reasonable merely because a generic “Linux driver” download exists. Verify the chipset revision, kernel support, firmware distribution, interface, dimensions, antenna needs, and whether the component is detected at all. For Wi‑Fi, a USB adapter can bypass an unsupported internal card, but it still requires a chipset with current support for your target kernel. For audio or graphics, replacement may involve proprietary firmware, physical compatibility, or an entirely different bus, so identify those constraints before purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to include when asking for help

A useful report lets another person reproduce the decision path without exposing private network data. Include:

  • Distribution name and release, kernel from uname -r, and desktop session if graphics or audio userspace is involved.
  • Exact PCI or USB ID and the driver/module lines from lspci -nnk.
  • Whether the device appears in ip link, iw dev, /proc/asound/cards, or the display settings.
  • Relevant, trimmed dmesg or journalctl -k -b lines, including firmware errors and initialization failures.
  • The precise symptom: absent device, hard block, scan failure, authentication failure, muted output, missing HDMI sink, blank display, low resolution, or missing acceleration.

For Intel wireless support requests, Linux Wireless documentation specifically asks users to confirm that the device is supported and enabled and to provide kernel messages and firmware information. Review the output for MAC addresses, network names, serial numbers, and other identifiers before sharing it.

Bottom line

The reliable fix is a diagnosis sequence, not a universal legacy-driver package: identify the hardware and kernel, verify detection and firmware, then troubleshoot the desktop layer only after the lower layer works. Wi‑Fi problems usually turn on radio state, chipset support, firmware, and the connection service; sound problems turn on ALSA detection versus output routing; graphics problems turn on mode-setting versus acceleration and GPU generation. If the exact chipset is unsupported, verify a replacement’s chipset and kernel support before spending money.
