Start by identifying whether the problem affects the Wi‑Fi connection, one app, a child-profile setting, or a particular video. On an Amazon Fire tablet using Amazon Kids, these symptoms can have different causes: a network problem, app failure, download restriction, unavailable content, low storage, or out-of-date software. Work through the checks below in that order, and match software instructions to your tablet’s model and generation.

First, identify what is failing

Separate the symptom before changing settings. Can the tablet join Wi‑Fi but not reach the internet? Does only one app fail, or are downloads blocked or stuck? Is an app or video missing only from the child profile? Does a video fail while other online services work?

  • If multiple devices have trouble on the same Wi‑Fi, investigate the network or contact your internet service provider.
  • If other devices work but the Fire tablet does not, test the tablet on a phone hotspot.
  • If the connection works and only one app fails, focus on that app and the child-profile settings.
  • If an app or video is missing from Amazon Kids, check parental controls and whether the title can be shared with a child profile.

Amazon calls the hardware a Fire tablet and the child-profile experience Amazon Kids. Features and availability vary by device and marketplace. Amazon’s Amazon Kids help describes marketplace and device availability.

Why won’t my Fire tablet connect to Wi‑Fi?

Use these checks in order. Amazon’s Fire tablet Wi‑Fi troubleshooting includes the phone-hotspot test and says, “If this works, the issue is with your network, not your tablet.”

  1. Turn off Airplane mode. Confirm that you selected the correct Wi‑Fi network and entered its password accurately.
  2. Connect another device to the same Wi‑Fi. Bring the tablet closer to the router, move it away from microwaves, baby monitors, and other wireless devices, and reduce competing network use if bandwidth is limited.
  3. Restart the tablet and reboot the modem or router. Wait two minutes before trying to connect again.
  4. If the network is hidden, add it manually by entering its name and password and selecting the hidden-network option.
  5. Reset the tablet’s network settings: open Settings > Connected Devices > Network Settings Reset, then try connecting again.
  6. Check for an update for your exact tablet model and generation on Amazon’s Fire tablet software updates page.
  7. Try connecting to a phone hotspot. If the tablet connects there, Amazon’s guidance points to the Wi‑Fi network rather than the tablet. If several devices cannot connect to your network, contact your internet service provider.

Mesh networks, extenders, and public Wi‑Fi

For a mesh or extender setup, Amazon says the 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and extender or mesh networks should use the same network name, security type, and password. Public Wi‑Fi may require a sign-in page. If it does not appear automatically, open a simple website in Silk or select the connected network and choose Sign in.

Why won’t apps download on my child’s Fire tablet?

A blocked or missing download is not the same as an app that installs but crashes. On a Fire tablet, Amazon’s general instructions say to open Games & Apps or the Apps/Games app, then choose a title from Library or search the Store. If the app does not appear or the child cannot download it, check the profile and Store permissions before troubleshooting the app itself.

Check the child profile and approval settings

  • Use the parent controls in Parent Dashboard or on the tablet to check the child profile’s Store and content settings.
  • Check whether the child requested permission to download the title and whether the parent has approved it.
  • After sharing approved content, allow a few minutes for it to appear in the child profile.
  • On an adult profile, parental controls can restrict downloads, content types, and wireless connectivity. Amazon’s general parental-controls guidance is for adult profiles or users 13 and older; manage a child under 13 through the Amazon Kids child profile.

Amazon’s Fire tablet app installation help and Amazon Kids parental-control help explain these controls. Labels and available options can vary by device and software version.

Check available storage

Low storage can interfere with downloads. Use Amazon’s Optimize Storage instructions to archive or remove unused content and free space. Do not use a microSD card as an app-install destination on Fire OS 6 or later: Amazon says those versions cannot install apps and games to microSD.

Why does an app freeze, crash, or refuse to open?

If the app is already installed but misbehaves, follow Amazon’s recovery sequence. Menu wording may differ across Fire OS versions; see the Amazon app troubleshooting instructions for your tablet generation.

  1. Force close the app.
  2. Restart the tablet and open the app again.
  3. Clear the app’s data and cache. On devices using the documented menu path, open Settings > Apps & Notifications > Manage All Applications or See all apps, select the app, choose Storage, then select Clear Data or Clear Storage and Clear Cache.
  4. If the app can be uninstalled, remove it and reinstall it. Pre-installed apps cannot be uninstalled.
  5. If the problem remains limited to one app, use the developer details on that app’s Amazon Appstore page to contact its developer.

Why can’t my child see this app or video?

Content can be absent from a child profile because of parent settings or because the title is not eligible to be shared there. Check the profile’s content settings and the title’s source before treating the issue as a tablet fault.

Amazon says Prime Video rentals and videos included with Prime cannot be added to a child profile, while purchased videos can be shared. For a missing profile, Amazon also says child profiles inactive for more than 18 months are automatically removed; the help page does not state a publication date for this rule. See Amazon Kids profile and content settings.

Why does video keep buffering or refusing to play?

First confirm that the tablet has working internet access, then restart it. If other network services work but one streaming app does not, use the app recovery steps above and check that app’s current help or contact its developer.

If the video is missing from Amazon Kids rather than failing during playback, check whether the title can be shared with a child profile. Amazon’s Prime Video download help says offline downloads are started from a movie’s detail page or the download icon beside an episode. Download and playback options can differ by title and profile; do not assume that a subscription video, rental, or every profile supports the same behavior.

Amazon’s support guidance covers general Fire tablet network and app recovery, but does not establish one universal fix for buffering, playback error codes, licensing errors, or app-specific outages. If the tablet can use other network services and the video problem persists, check the streaming app’s own current support information.

How to check Fire OS updates for the right tablet

Amazon lists software by tablet family and generation, so identify the exact model before applying version-specific instructions or manually installing an update. Its Fire tablet software updates page is a live reference; listed versions can change. For example, the page showed Fire OS 8.3.3.8 for Fire HD 10 (13th generation), Fire Max 11 (13th generation), Fire HD 8 (12th generation), and Fire 7 (12th generation) when the support information was checked on October 9, 2026. Those entries are examples, not a substitute for checking the current listing for your tablet.

Amazon’s Fire tablet model-identification and quick-start guides list Kids models including Fire HD 10 Kids and Fire HD 10 Kids Pro (13th generation), and Fire HD 8 Kids and Fire HD 8 Kids Pro (2024 release/12th generation), along with earlier models. Confirm your model and generation before following a version-specific guide.
