A Safari problem can come from the website, your network, stored site data, an extension, a privacy control, or a device setting. Start by finding the scope: reload the page, try another website, test the same site in another browser or device, and switch networks. Then follow the steps for your iPhone or iPad, or for your Mac. This approach identifies the cause before you clear data or weaken a privacy setting.

First identify what is actually failing

Write down the symptom before changing anything. A blank page, a page that never finishes loading, missing buttons, a failed sign-in, blocked media, or a download that does nothing can have different causes. Test one variable at a time so you know which change matters.

Question How to test What the result tells you
Is only one page affected? Open two or three unrelated websites in Safari. If other sites work, concentrate on that site’s data, permissions, content, or compatibility.
Is Safari the only affected browser? Open the same address in another browser on the same device. If it works elsewhere, Safari settings, extensions, or stored data become more likely.
Is one device affected? Try the site on another phone, tablet, or computer. If another device works, investigate the original device rather than replacing network equipment.
Is the network involved? Use cellular data instead of Wi-Fi, or join another Wi-Fi network. If the site works after the network change, the original network, VPN, security filter, or routing deserves attention.
Do several devices and browsers fail on the same network? Test the site from another device and another browser without changing the network. Apple Support says the problem is probably with the website when it affects other devices and browsers on the same network.

These tests are clues, not proof. A single-site failure can still be caused by local cookies, cached data, permissions, or a content blocker. Keep the exact address and any error message available if you eventually contact the site owner.

Fix websites on iPhone or iPad

1. Change the connection

  1. Turn off Wi-Fi temporarily and open the site over cellular data.
  2. If cellular data is unavailable, join a different Wi-Fi network, such as a trusted hotspot.
  3. Reload the page after the connection changes.

If the site works on cellular data but not your usual Wi-Fi, the Safari app is not necessarily at fault. The original network, a VPN, a filtering service, or the site’s route to that network may be responsible. Restore your normal connection after testing.

2. Check for a VPN

Open Settings and review the VPN configuration. Temporarily disconnect a VPN only as a diagnostic test, then try the page again. If the site loads, decide whether the VPN’s filtering or route is necessary and review its settings. Do not leave a preferred security configuration disabled merely because one test changed the result.

3. Restart the device

Restart the iPhone or iPad, wait for it to reconnect to the network, and try the page again. A restart can clear a temporary connection or process problem without deleting browsing information.

4. Clear Safari history and website data

When one site remains broken, clearing Safari’s website information can remove a corrupted or incompatible stored state. The current path is Settings > Apps > Safari > Clear History and Website Data.

This is a broad reset, not a narrow cache button. It can remove browsing and site information, change saved sessions, and sign you out of websites. Make sure you know the sign-in details you need before using it. After the reset, open Safari and visit the affected site again.

5. Check JavaScript when controls or content are missing

Websites use JavaScript for buttons, forms, menus, and other interactive content. If it was intentionally disabled, turn it on at Settings > Apps > Safari > Advanced > JavaScript, then reload the page. Apple notes that some websites cannot work properly when JavaScript is disabled.

Do not treat JavaScript as a general speed or privacy switch. Change it when the symptom points to missing controls or when you know it was disabled, and return to your preferred setting after diagnosis if appropriate.

6. Test iCloud Private Relay for a single-site failure

If one site still fails while others work, check whether iCloud Private Relay is enabled. Temporarily turn it off, reload the page, and compare the result. Private Relay can change how a site sees and routes your connection. Restore it after the test if you want its privacy protection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Escalate a persistent site-specific problem

If the same site remains broken after a network comparison, restart, website-data reset, and relevant setting checks, contact the website developer or owner. Include your device model, iOS or iPadOS version, Safari symptom, the page address, and the time of the failure. Apple’s guidance directs users to the site owner when a particular website continues to be affected.

Fix websites on a Mac

1. Reload, then reopen Safari if necessary

  1. With the affected page active, press Command-R to reload it.
  2. If Safari does not reload or becomes unresponsive, close Safari and open it again.
  3. Try the page once more before making larger changes.

A reload is a low-risk first test. It does not remove cookies, sign-ins, or other stored website data.

2. Install available macOS updates and restart

Safari is included with macOS, so update macOS rather than looking for a separate Safari installer. Install available updates through macOS System Settings, restart the Mac, and test the page again. An update can also address a site that incorrectly reports Safari as out of date.

3. Disable extensions temporarily

Open Safari’s settings and turn extensions off temporarily. Reload the affected page. If it works, re-enable extensions one at a time until the problem returns. Update or remove the extension that causes the failure, and keep unrelated extensions enabled if they are not involved.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Content blockers are extensions, but a site can also be affected by other Safari privacy or security controls. Use the one-at-a-time method rather than disabling every protection permanently.

4. Compare a private window with a normal window

Open the affected address in a Safari private window. If it works there but not in a regular window, stored website data is a strong suspect. A private-window result is a diagnostic comparison; it does not by itself identify whether a cookie, cache entry, or saved permission is responsible.

5. Remove data for only the affected site

  1. First make sure you know the site’s sign-in information.
  2. Open Safari > Settings > Privacy > Manage Website Data.
  3. Search for the affected website.
  4. Remove that site’s stored data where possible.
  5. Close the settings window, reopen the site in a regular Safari window, and sign in again if asked.

Apple’s Safari User Guide warns that removing website data can sign you out or change how a site behaves. Removing one site is less disruptive than deleting all browsing data, but it still changes that site’s saved state.

6. Check only settings related to the symptom

Safari settings are grouped under Privacy, Security, Websites, and Advanced. A site may require JavaScript, cookies, downloads, pop-ups, camera access, microphone access, or an exception to a content blocker. Check the relevant control for the affected site instead of reducing protections everywhere.

Symptom Relevant check How to test safely Trade-off
Buttons, forms, or page sections are missing JavaScript Check the JavaScript setting under Safari’s Advanced settings, enable it if it was disabled, and reload. Changing a setting unnecessarily can alter the behavior of other sites.
A new window or checkout does not appear Pop-up and website controls Review the affected site under Safari’s Websites settings and allow only what the site needs for the test. Allowing pop-ups can expose unwanted windows, so avoid a global allowance.
A download does nothing Downloads and website permissions Check the site-specific download permission and try the download again. Broader download permissions can make unwanted files easier to obtain.
Video calls or recording fail Camera and microphone permissions Review the affected site’s camera or microphone permission and grant it only if you recognize the site. Permission gives the site access to the selected device during use.
Content is absent or a page is incomplete Content blocker or advanced privacy protection Temporarily make a site-specific exception, reload, and compare. Reducing privacy protection can expose more tracking or cross-site content; restore the protection after testing.
Sign-in loops or a site forgets your session Cookies and stored website data Use a private-window comparison, then remove only that site’s data if the private window works. Removing data can sign you out and erase saved site state.

7. Test VPN, security software, and Private Relay

Temporarily disconnect a VPN or network security filter and reload the page. If your Mac uses iCloud Private Relay, Safari may show Reload and Show IP Address in the Page menu. Use that option as a diagnostic comparison when it appears. If the page works only after these protections are bypassed, restore your preferred protection and investigate a site-specific exception or contact the service provider rather than leaving security controls disabled.

Cookies, cache, and website data: choose the least disruptive reset

Safari stores information that helps websites remember sessions, preferences, and other state. That information can become incompatible with a changed site, and removing it can correct a page that works in a private window but not a normal one.

  • Use a private window first on Mac. It compares a fresh site state without immediately deleting saved information.
  • Remove one website’s data when possible. On Mac, use Safari > Settings > Privacy > Manage Website Data and target the affected domain.
  • Expect sign-outs. A site-data removal can require you to authenticate again and may reset preferences.
  • Use the iPhone or iPad clear-data command only when broader reset is acceptable. Settings > Apps > Safari > Clear History and Website Data affects browsing and site information more broadly.

Do not delete all data repeatedly as a substitute for diagnosis. If a site fails again immediately after a reset, an extension, permission, network path, or site-side defect is more likely than a stale cookie alone.

JavaScript, privacy, and security settings

JavaScript is part of normal website functionality, not merely an optional enhancement. Apple explains that websites use it for buttons, forms, and other content, and specifically states: “Some websites can’t work properly if you disable JavaScript.” Check it when interactive controls fail, but do not enable or disable it globally without a symptom.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Privacy and security protections can also change how a page behaves. Content blockers may remove scripts or embedded content. Advanced privacy controls may prevent a site from receiving information it expects. Camera, microphone, pop-up, and download permissions can stop a particular workflow. Test the narrowest relevant permission for the affected site, note the result, and restore a stronger setting when it is not needed.

How to interpret VPN and Private Relay results

A VPN or iCloud Private Relay can alter the apparent network location, address, or route used to reach a site. That can affect authentication, fraud checks, regional content, or a site’s ability to connect to another service. A successful load after temporarily disconnecting is evidence that the network path matters; it is not a reason to buy another VPN or permanently abandon privacy features.

  1. Record the original symptom.
  2. Temporarily disconnect the existing VPN, or use Safari’s Reload and Show IP Address diagnostic when available for Private Relay.
  3. Reload the same page without changing other settings.
  4. Restore the VPN or Private Relay preference.
  5. If the difference is repeatable, ask the website or network administrator whether its service blocks the address range or privacy relay.

When the website itself is the problem

Apple Support says, “If the issue affects other devices and web browsers on the same network, the issue is probably with the website.” This is especially persuasive when the site fails for several people or devices while unrelated websites continue to work. It is not absolute: local site data and network filters can still create a single-site failure.

Contact the owner or developer when the site remains broken after the relevant device steps. Send the page address, the exact error or visible symptom, the device and operating-system version, Safari version if shown, whether another browser works, and whether another network changes the result. Avoid sending passwords or private account information.

Report a website issue in Safari 26

Safari 26 adds a website issue reporting option after you reload a page. Safari 26 is included with the latest updates for macOS Sequoia 15 or later. After reloading, open Safari’s Page menu and look for Report a Website Issue. Use it when a particular site remains faulty or incorrectly says Safari is out of date. If the option is not present, use the site owner’s support channel instead.

A practical decision path

Situation Best next test Why this route fits Possible side effect
Several sites fail on one device Try another network, restart, update the operating system, and review VPN settings. The failure may involve connectivity or the device rather than one site. Changing networks can alter access to local resources.
One site fails in normal Safari but works privately on Mac Remove that site’s data through Manage Website Data. The private-window comparison points to stored site information. You may be signed out of that site.
One site fails only when an extension is enabled Re-enable extensions one at a time and update the one that triggers the failure. This isolates interference without disabling every extension. The affected extension may need to remain off for that site.
Interactive controls are missing Check JavaScript and relevant content-blocker settings. Those controls can prevent scripts or page components from running. Reducing blocking or enabling scripts can change privacy and security behavior.
The site fails on multiple devices and browsers on one network Test another network and contact the website if the failure follows the site. Apple identifies this pattern as probably a website problem. The site owner may need to correct compatibility or availability issues.

Final checklist before contacting support

  • Reloaded the page and tried another website.
  • Compared Safari with another browser or device.
  • Tested another Wi-Fi network or cellular data where available.
  • Restarted the iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
  • Checked the existing VPN and, for a single-site issue, Private Relay.
  • On Mac, tested with extensions disabled and in a private window.
  • Removed only the affected site’s data when the private-window test pointed to stored data.
  • Checked JavaScript, pop-ups, downloads, camera, microphone, and content-blocker controls only when the symptom matched.
  • Recorded the exact page, error, device, operating system, and test results.
