If a website looks squeezed after Chrome opens AI Mode, the page usually has not failed: the browser is sharing its window between the page and a side panel. Drag the panel edge inward or close the panel first. If the layout is still wrong, restore that site’s zoom with Ctrl+0 (Windows and Linux), remove a saved zoom override, and only then consider resetting Chrome settings.
Why Chrome’s AI Mode can make a website look broken
Chrome’s AI Mode can display a conversation beside the page instead of replacing the page. Google describes this as a side-by-side experience: you can keep a webpage open while AI Mode occupies a side panel, and links opened from search may load in that panel arrangement on desktop Chrome.
The panel reduces the width available to the webpage. Modern sites commonly use responsive breakpoints that change navigation, column count, image size, text wrapping, and controls when the viewport becomes narrower. A site that looks normal with the panel closed may therefore switch to a compact layout, wrap awkwardly, hide controls behind a menu, or appear “broken” while the browser is working as designed. This viewport explanation is an inference from the side-by-side arrangement, not a published Google measurement and not proof that every affected site has defective code.
AI Mode is rolling out gradually. Availability, wording, and controls can differ by Chrome release, account, language, region, and device. The instructions below apply to desktop Chrome when the side panel is visible.

Choose the least disruptive fix first

1. Make the AI Mode panel narrower
Resize the panel from its edge
When you need AI Mode open, resizing is the smallest intervention. Move the pointer to the boundary between the webpage and the panel. When the resize handle appears, select and hold it, then drag inward until the page has enough width for its normal layout. Google’s Chrome side-panel instructions identify this control as Drag on the side of the panel.
- Move to the panel’s left boundary if the panel is on the right, or to its right boundary if the panel is on the left.
- Select and hold the drag handle.
- Drag toward the panel until the page regains the width you need.
- Release the handle and test the page’s navigation, forms, and main content.
Use this option when the site is usable at a slightly wider viewport and the AI conversation is part of your task. If the page remains too narrow even with the smallest practical panel, close the panel instead of shrinking the webpage further.
2. Close the panel to reclaim the full browser width
Use the panel’s Close control
Select Close at the top right of the AI Mode side panel. Google documents this as the standard way to close a Chrome side panel. The webpage should expand into the space that the panel occupied; you may need to wait briefly for its responsive layout to recalculate.

That behavior applies to that navigation path; it does not mean every ordinary tab will be converted into an AI Mode tab.
Check the page after closing
- Scroll horizontally, if the site had created a temporary horizontal overflow.
- Open the site’s main menu again to confirm that its desktop layout returned.
- Refresh only if controls remain misplaced after the panel is gone.
Closing the panel is preferable to changing global display settings when reading width matters more than keeping the AI conversation visible.

3. Restore the site’s zoom level
Use Chrome’s Zoom menu
A narrowed viewport and a stored zoom setting can compound each other. At a reduced zoom, text and controls may be hard to read; at an enlarged zoom, fewer columns fit and responsive breakpoints trigger sooner. Open Chrome’s three-dot menu, find Zoom, and return the page to a comfortable value.
Use the keyboard reset on Windows or Linux
Press Ctrl+0 to return everything on the page to its default size. Chrome documents this shortcut as “Return everything on the page to default size.” This resets page scale, not the width of the AI panel itself, so close or resize the panel separately if the viewport is still narrow.

Make the smallest adjustment that solves the readability problem; a large increase can cause a site to enter a mobile-style layout even after the panel is closed.
Tell a zoom problem from a viewport problem
- If text, buttons, and images are all uniformly too large or too small, zoom is a likely cause.
- If the page becomes normal immediately when the panel closes, the available viewport width was the main trigger.
- If the same domain is wrong every time while other sites are normal, check for a saved per-site zoom entry.
4. Remove a saved zoom override for one site
Open Chrome’s zoom-level list
Chrome can remember a separate zoom value for an individual domain. To remove that override, open Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Additional content settings > Zoom levels. Find the affected site and remove its entry.
After removing the entry, return to the site and press Ctrl+0 (Windows or Linux) if needed. Then open and close the AI panel once to compare the page at its normal scale. Removing the entry is a local change: it does not alter zoom choices for unrelated domains.

When a local reset is the right choice
Use this path when one website repeatedly looks wrong but other sites behave normally. It avoids the side effects of changing a global preference and preserves any intentional zoom settings you use elsewhere.

Run a controlled comparison
- Leave the AI Mode panel open on the affected page and note the wrapping, missing columns, or hidden controls.
- Open another unrelated site in a separate tab or window with the panel open.
- Close the panel on both pages and compare their layouts again.
- Return to the first site and reset its zoom before changing broader Chrome settings.
If only one site fails, keep the remedy local: reset that domain’s zoom, reload it, and check whether its responsive layout is simply reacting to the reduced width. The conclusion that a site’s own layout is responsible is a troubleshooting inference; Chrome’s panel and zoom controls establish the browser actions, not the quality of a site’s code.
If many unrelated sites show the same abnormal scaling or layout after the panel is closed, investigate Chrome’s profile settings rather than repeatedly adjusting individual pages.
6. Reload after the width or zoom is corrected
Most responsive layouts recalculate automatically when the viewport changes. If a menu remains in its narrow state, reload the page after resizing or closing the panel. A reload is useful when a site cached a layout decision made while the panel was open. It should follow, not replace, the panel and zoom checks: reloading does not widen the viewport or remove a saved zoom value.
For a one-site issue, reload that site only. Avoid changing several settings at once, because you will lose the ability to identify which adjustment fixed the layout.

7. Reset Chrome settings only for persistent, profile-wide problems
Use the documented reset path
When numerous sites remain affected and Chrome settings have changed unexpectedly, use Settings > Reset settings > Restore settings to their original defaults > Reset settings.
Understand what the reset does
Google states that saved bookmarks and passwords are not deleted or changed. The reset can change extensions, themes, startup pages, the default search engine, and content settings. Because it affects more than the AI panel or one site’s zoom, treat it as a broad fallback rather than a routine fix for a cramped page.
- Use it only after panel resizing, closing, zoom correction, and site comparison have failed.
- Record any custom startup page, search engine, theme, or content permissions you rely on.
- Expect to review extensions and other profile customizations afterward.
Which fix should you keep?

Panel resizing, closing, and zoom changes are easy to reverse. A settings reset is intentionally broader and can alter extensions, themes, startup behavior, search, and content permissions.

Text wraps into very short lines
Close the panel or drag its edge inward. If the text remains unusually large, press Ctrl+0 on Windows or Linux.

The desktop navigation has changed to a hamburger menu
The page has probably crossed a responsive breakpoint because the available width is smaller. Restore width by closing or narrowing the panel before changing site settings.

Only one site remembers the wrong size
Remove that domain’s entry under Chrome’s Zoom levels, then reload the site.
Every site looks wrong after the panel is gone
Compare zoom and profile behavior across unrelated sites. If the issue persists, use Chrome’s reset-settings path as a last resort and expect profile customizations to change.
The panel controls are missing or labeled differently
AI Mode is being rolled out gradually, so controls can vary by account, language, region, device, and Chrome release. Look for the panel boundary and the top-right close control; if the feature is unavailable on that account or device, the AI Mode-specific steps will not appear.

- Do not install a separate utility or buy a monitor accessory to solve a browser-width problem.
- Do not change global zoom when a single domain has a saved override.
- Do not reset Chrome immediately for a page that becomes normal as soon as the panel closes.
- Do not assume a compact responsive layout means the site is permanently damaged; test it with the panel closed and zoom restored.
A short recovery checklist
- Confirm that AI Mode is occupying part of the desktop Chrome window.
- Drag the panel edge inward if you need to keep it visible.
- Otherwise select Close at the panel’s top right.
- Use Chrome’s Zoom menu or press Ctrl+0 on Windows/Linux.
- For one recurring domain, remove its entry under Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Additional content settings > Zoom levels.
- Reload the affected page and compare it with another site.
- Only if multiple sites remain affected, use Settings > Reset settings > Restore settings to their original defaults > Reset settings.
The practical rule is simple: recover width before changing scale, change scale before changing profile settings, and keep a one-site problem local.
