First identify what Webroot blocked. A browser warning is controlled by Web Shield or Web Threat Shield; a stopped executable may be quarantined, listed in Block/Allow Files, blocked as an active process, or denied network access by the firewall. Use the control that matches the symptom, verify the file or site independently, and keep protection enabled whenever possible.
Identify the blocking layer before changing anything
“Webroot is blocking my app” can describe several different events. The correct fix depends on whether the program cannot start, starts but cannot connect, or is a website that fails to load. Changing an unrelated setting can leave the real block in place or weaken protection without restoring access.
| What you see | Most likely control | What to inspect |
|---|---|---|
| A browser page says a site is dangerous, blocked, or a phishing risk. | Web Shield or Web Threat Shield | The exact address, the browser extension, malicious-site and anti-phishing settings, and (where available) an allowed-site exclusion. |
| An installer or executable disappears, will not start, or is reported as detected. | Quarantine and Block/Allow Files | PC Security > Block/Allow Files, the file’s disposition, and whether the file is quarantined. |
| The program opens but closes, freezes, or is stopped by SecureAnywhere. | Control Active Processes | Whether the process is set to Allow, Monitor, or Block. |
| The program runs but cannot sign in, update, or reach a server. | Firewall or network application control | The application’s network permission and any firewall decision affecting its connection. |
These controls are not interchangeable. Allowing a file does not necessarily grant it network access, and changing Web Shield does not restore an executable removed to quarantine.

Record the alert and verify what you are about to allow
Before editing a setting, write down the blocked website address or the complete application and file name. Capture the alert text, your operating system, and the SecureAnywhere or Total Protection interface you have installed. Webroot’s false-positive guidance asks for the operating system and filename when a case is submitted, and those details also make local troubleshooting much faster.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Use the exact host name, including a subdomain, rather than a shortened description such as “the company portal.”
- For a file, note its full path, publisher shown in the file’s properties, and where you obtained it.
- Check that the download came from the developer or another source you already trust. A warning is not proof that a file is safe merely because you expected it.
- Do not approve a cracked, modified, or unknown executable simply because it is urgent. If you cannot establish its legitimacy, use Webroot’s review process instead of a local override.
Keep a copy of the original alert. If the problem returns after an update, the message and file version can reveal whether the detection changed.
Fix a website blocked by Webroot
Use the Total Protection allowed-site exclusion when it is present
Webroot documents a site-exclusion workflow in the Webroot Total Protection Web Threat Shield interface. The labels below apply to that documented screen; they are not guaranteed to exist in every SecureAnywhere edition.
- Open the Web Threat Shield settings in Total Protection.
- Choose Manage Exclusion.
- Add the trusted site’s address exactly as it appears in the browser warning.
- Save the change with Apply.
- Close and reopen the affected browser tab, then test the site once.
Webroot says an address added there is excluded from the Malware Scanner’s block-page decision. Add only the narrow host or address you need. An exclusion for an entire domain can also cover pages you did not intend to trust, so review the entry later and remove it when the site no longer requires an exception.
Check Web Shield settings in SecureAnywhere
SecureAnywhere’s settings guide places web controls at Advanced Settings > Firewall / Web Shield. Open that path and compare the current state with the defaults. The documented controls include:
- Enable Web Shield, which keeps web filtering active.
- The browser extension, where the installed browser supports it.
- Malicious-site blocking and anti-phishing protection.
- The filtering-driver setting used to inspect web traffic.
These protections are enabled by default in the documented configuration. Leave them on unless Webroot Support specifically instructs you to change one for a controlled diagnostic. If a menu label differs, use the closest label in your installed build rather than assuming that a control has moved to the same place.
When a legitimate site still will not load
Confirm that the block occurs in more than one browser or that the browser extension is the component reporting it. Check the address for a typo, a redirected hostname, or a different subdomain: an exclusion for portal.example does not necessarily cover login.example or a third-party sign-in host. If the site uses a desktop companion application, treat that application as a separate file or firewall case.

Do not solve a single-site warning by turning off all web protection. If the Total Protection exclusion control is absent, or if the warning persists after a precise exclusion, record the alert and contact Webroot Support. SecureAnywhere’s Web Shield settings and Total Protection’s Web Threat Shield are related products but not identical interfaces.

Fix an app or executable that Webroot blocked
Inspect quarantine and Block/Allow Files
In SecureAnywhere, open PC Security > Block/Allow Files. The list can include items that Webroot quarantined. For a known executable, the available dispositions are Allow, Block, and Monitor.
- Find the exact file name and confirm that its path matches the copy you intended to run.
- Check whether the item is quarantined or has an explicit Block decision.
- Use Allow only after independently establishing that the file is safe and required.
- Use Monitor only when you understand that Webroot will observe the file rather than granting the same unrestricted override as Allow.
- Apply the change, then launch the application once and note the result.
Webroot states that these dispositions override its default scanning and shielding behavior. That makes them powerful exceptions, not routine compatibility switches. Do not add a broad folder or a similarly named file when the alert identifies one executable.
Separate a process block from a file block
An application can be present on disk and still be stopped as an active process. Open the active-process controls and look for the program while it is starting. Webroot defines the available decisions as follows:
| Decision | Effect | When it is appropriate |
|---|---|---|
| Allow | Permits the process to run normally. | Only when the executable and its purpose are verified. |
| Monitor | Lets the process run while Webroot observes its behavior. | For a verified program when you need a less permissive test than a permanent Allow. |
| Block | Prevents the process from running. | For a process confirmed to be unwanted; do not use it merely because its name is unfamiliar. |
Webroot’s process guidance warns against blocking a process unless you are certain it is non-essential. If the program is a component of Windows, a driver, or another security product, changing its process decision can cause additional failures.
Check the firewall when the app runs but cannot connect
PC Security troubleshooting treats firewall decisions as a separate cause. A program may open successfully while its updater, license check, cloud sync, or sign-in request is denied. Review the firewall or network application controls for the program and its helper process. Verify that the rule applies to the current executable path and network profile.

Test the smallest function first: launch the app, then try its sign-in or update action. If only the network action fails, do not change the file’s malware disposition. Correct the firewall decision or ask Webroot Support to interpret the rule. A local Allow in Block/Allow Files does not automatically authorize outbound connections.
Decide whether a detected file is genuinely safe
Use more than the file name. Malware can copy the name of a legitimate program, and a legitimate publisher’s file can be replaced or tampered with.
- Confirm the download source and compare the publisher and digital-signature information with the developer’s documentation.
- Check the full path. A program running from a temporary or user-profile folder may deserve more scrutiny than the same signed program installed in its normal location.
- Ask whether the file was recently updated, repackaged, or modified by an administrator. A new version can trigger a different detection.
- Submit uncertainty for review instead of treating a clean result from one scanner as a guarantee.
Webroot’s published guidance says: “We only recommend restoring files if you are certain it is safe.” Restoration from quarantine should therefore be the final local step, not the first reaction to a block page.

If you know a detected file is legitimate but Webroot continues to identify it, use Webroot’s Threat Researchers submission process. In the submission form, include the operating system, the exact filename, and the detection details. Select False Positive detection as the reason.
- Keep the file quarantined while you gather its details unless you are certain that restoring it is safe.
- Record the detection message, file path, file version, and where the file was downloaded.
- Submit the sample or the requested identifying information to Threat Researchers.
- Wait for the vendor’s determination before distributing the file to other computers.
- If the application is business-critical, open a support ticket and include the steps you already tried.
This route addresses a detection at the vendor level and avoids leaving a permanent local exception that could mask a later replacement of the file.
Use shutdown only as a brief diagnostic
Webroot’s PC FAQ describes temporarily shutting down protection to determine whether Webroot is involved. This is a diagnostic test, not a lasting workaround: active protection is off for the duration.

- Close sensitive work and make sure you know how to turn SecureAnywhere back on.
- Shut down protection only long enough to repeat the one failing action.
- Turn protection on immediately after the test.
- If the problem exists only while Webroot is active, record the error and every setting you checked, then contact Webroot Support.
If the failure continues with protection shut down, Webroot is not established as the cause; investigate the application’s installation, account, server, permissions, or another security product. Never leave the computer unprotected while waiting for a response.

The detailed menu paths in Webroot’s PC troubleshooting material are Windows-oriented. Webroot’s false-positive instructions mention Windows, Mac, and Android, but that does not establish that those platforms expose identical Web Shield, process, quarantine, or firewall controls.
- On Windows, the documented PC Security, active-process, and firewall paths are the most relevant starting points.
- On macOS or Android, follow the labels shown by the installed app and use Webroot Support when a Windows menu is missing.
- Total Protection’s documented Manage Exclusion control should not be assumed to exist in every SecureAnywhere release.
- Support pages generally do not show a publication date, so menu names can change between builds. Match the instructions to the interface currently installed.
Choose the narrowest remedy
Use this order when several symptoms appear at once. First determine whether the browser or the local program produced the warning. For a browser-only block, inspect Web Threat Shield or Web Shield. For a missing or quarantined executable, inspect Block/Allow Files. For a program that starts and is immediately stopped, inspect active processes. For a program that runs but cannot reach a server, inspect firewall and network application rules. Escalate to a false-positive review when the file’s legitimacy is uncertain.
| Remedy | What it changes | What it does not change |
|---|---|---|
| Total Protection Manage Exclusion | Excludes the specified site from the documented Web Threat Shield block-page decision. | It does not approve a desktop executable or automatically change firewall permissions. |
| Block/Allow Files | Sets a file disposition that overrides default scanning and shielding. | It does not prove the file is safe or guarantee network access. |
| Active-process decision | Allows, monitors, or blocks a running process. | It does not replace file verification or a firewall rule. |
| Firewall application rule | Controls whether an application or helper can communicate. | It does not restore a file removed to quarantine. |
| Threat Researchers review | Asks Webroot to assess a suspected false positive at the vendor level. | It is not an instant local bypass. |
What to do after access is restored
Repeat the original action only once, then check that the exception is as narrow as intended. Confirm that the site address, file path, or process name matches the item you verified. If an update replaces the executable, review the new path and signature rather than assuming the old exception covers it. For a website, remove a temporary exclusion when the site owner or Webroot confirms that the block was resolved.
Keep a note of the setting you changed and the date. This makes later troubleshooting easier and helps support distinguish a persistent rule from a new detection. If the application still fails, undo the local override and submit the alert details rather than stacking multiple exceptions.
Common scenarios and the safest next action
| Scenario | Next action | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| A trusted news or work site shows a Web Threat Shield block page. | Check the exact host; if using Total Protection, add a narrowly scoped entry through Manage Exclusion and Apply. | Disabling all malicious-site and anti-phishing protection. |
| A downloaded installer vanished after detection. | Open PC Security > Block/Allow Files, verify the source and signature, and submit a false-positive report if appropriate. | Restoring it solely because the installer is needed urgently. |
| An approved app opens but cannot update. | Inspect firewall or network application controls and the helper process. | Changing the file’s malware setting when the failure is network-only. |
| An unfamiliar process is blocked. | Identify its publisher, path, and parent application before changing Allow, Monitor, or Block. | Allowing it based on its name alone. |
| The issue disappears only when protection is shut down. | Re-enable protection and open a support ticket with the error and diagnostic steps. | Using shutdown as a permanent compatibility setting. |
Frequently asked questions
Why does Webroot block a website I use every day?
Daily use does not establish that the current page, redirect, or third-party sign-in host is safe. Check the exact hostname in the warning, including subdomains and redirects. If you use Total Protection and have independently verified the site, use Web Threat Shield’s Manage Exclusion control for that specific address. If the control is missing or the warning persists, preserve the alert and contact Webroot rather than disabling all web filtering.

Is clicking Allow in Block/Allow Files the same as restoring quarantine?
They are related but should be treated as a consequential override. Block/Allow Files can contain quarantined items and lets you set a disposition such as Allow, Block, or Monitor. Webroot says those choices override default scanning and shielding. Restore or allow a file only when its source, publisher, path, and purpose have been verified.
What if my app opens but cannot log in or update?
That pattern points to a network or firewall decision rather than necessarily a malware detection. Check the application’s firewall permission and any helper process used for updates or sign-in. An Allow decision for the file does not automatically authorize outbound connections. Test the specific network function before changing the file disposition.
Should I choose Monitor instead of Allow?
Monitor is a less permissive test for a verified program because Webroot observes the process rather than granting the same unrestricted override as Allow. It is not a substitute for verifying an unknown file. If you cannot establish that the executable is legitimate, leave it quarantined and submit the detection for review.
Can I turn off Webroot to make the program work?
Webroot documents shutdown only as a brief diagnostic. Active protection is off during the test, so turn it back on immediately. If the action succeeds only while protection is shut down, record the error and settings you checked and open a support ticket. A permanent shutdown leaves the computer without active protection and does not identify the correct long-term exception.
Do these menu paths work on Mac and Android?
Not necessarily. The detailed troubleshooting paths are Windows-oriented, while Webroot’s false-positive instructions cover Windows, Mac, and Android without promising identical controls. Use the labels in your installed app. If a documented Windows path is absent, provide Webroot Support with the platform, product interface, alert, and filename or URL.
Final checklist
- Identify whether the symptom is a website block, file quarantine, process block, or network denial.
- Record the exact address or filename, alert text, operating system, and product interface.
- Verify the site’s ownership or the file’s source, publisher, path, and signature before allowing it.
- Use the narrowest matching control: Total Protection’s Manage Exclusion for a documented site exception, Block/Allow Files for a verified executable, process controls for a running process, and firewall controls for connectivity.
- Keep Web Shield, malicious-site, anti-phishing, and active protection enabled unless Support directs a brief test.
- Submit uncertain detections as false positives and restore quarantined files only when you are certain they are safe.
When the menus or behavior do not match these paths, stop changing settings and give Webroot Support the recorded alert, operating system, filename or URL, and the actions already attempted. That preserves protection while giving support enough information to identify the actual blocking layer.
The Bottom Line
Match the fix to the block: Web Threat Shield or Web Shield for a website, Block/Allow Files for a verified executable, active-process controls for a stopped process, and firewall rules for connection failures. Keep protection enabled, avoid broad exceptions, and send uncertain detections to Webroot for false-positive review.
