Start by separating a connection failure from a browser-compatibility failure. If the PSP cannot open any page, repair its WLAN connection and saved access-point profile first; if simple pages open but one site is blank, garbled, incomplete, or reports an SSL problem, work through cache, view, and memory settings before accepting that the built-in browser may not support the site.
The sequence below moves from reversible checks to the PSP browser’s hard limits, with model-specific cautions for PSP-1000 and PSP-3002/3003 systems.
Identify what is actually failing
Run one quick test before changing settings: try a very small, uncomplicated page that does not require a login or heavy scripting. Then classify the result.

This distinction prevents a common mistake: changing display options cannot restore a Wi-Fi link, and clearing a cache cannot add a modern TLS implementation or JavaScript engine.

1. Restore the PSP’s wireless connection
If no page loads, do not begin with rendering settings. Sony’s network troubleshooting guidance for the PSP-3002/3003 starts with the radio and access-point connection. Owners of another revision should use that model’s manual for model-specific menu names and hardware details.
Check the physical WLAN controls
- Move the PSP’s WLAN switch to the enabled position. A disabled switch prevents the browser from reaching an access point regardless of browser settings.
- Temporarily turn off WLAN Power Save while diagnosing the problem. Power saving can make a marginal connection appear to drop or fail during a request; disabling it is a diagnostic step, not necessarily a permanent battery recommendation.
- Move closer to the wireless access point and retry the small test page. Distance, walls, and local radio interference can prevent a stable association.
- Check whether other nearby wireless equipment is creating interference. Retry from a different location or after moving the PSP away from crowded radio sources.
Verify the saved access-point profile
Open the PSP’s network settings and inspect the connection profile the browser is using. Confirm the network name and security details match the access point. A profile can be saved successfully yet still point to an old router, a changed password, or a network with settings the PSP cannot use.
The Internet browser can either select the most recently used connection automatically or ask you to choose a connection whenever it starts. If the wrong saved profile is being selected, switch to manual selection and choose the known-good profile each time you launch the browser. This is particularly useful when several access points are stored on the Memory Stick.

Some networks allow only listed device addresses. If the access point uses MAC-address filtering, add the PSP’s address to its permitted list or disable that restriction temporarily for testing. Also check whether the access point is handing out an address and whether its Internet connection works with another device. A PSP that associates with a local network but cannot reach an outside page still has a network-path problem, not necessarily a browser-rendering problem.
After each change, close and reopen the browser and test the same small page. If no page works after the radio, profile, distance, interference, and access-control checks, record that result before moving on; it is evidence that later browser display settings are unlikely to solve the underlying failure.

2. Clear cache and site data
When only one or a few pages misbehave, stale browser state is a reasonable next suspect. Open the browser menu with Triangle, choose Tools, and use the deletion controls for cached files. Refresh the page after the deletion rather than relying on the copy already held in memory.
Choose an appropriate cache action
The PSP browser offers these cache settings:

When the selected limit is exceeded, the browser discards the oldest files automatically. Increasing the limit can change which files are retained, but it does not increase the browser’s rendering engine, add newer encryption protocols, or make an unsupported site compatible.
Delete cookies or authentication information only when needed
If clearing the cache does not help, use the same Tools area to delete cookies or authentication information and then sign in again. This can remove remembered sessions and other stored site state, so use it when a site repeatedly redirects, shows an outdated account state, or behaves differently after a login. Delete only the categories you need for the test; there is no benefit in erasing all stored data when the symptom is clearly a missing image controlled by a view setting.
3. Review View Settings for missing content
Open Tools > Settings > View Settings. These switches control what the browser requests and how much data it attempts to keep in memory.
Images and animation
Set Images to On when pictures or image-based navigation are missing. On the PSP, turning Images off also turns Animation off, so an animated element will not return until images are enabled again. If a page is too large to load reliably, you can deliberately turn images off as a diagnostic test, but the resulting text-only view is not evidence that the site itself is broken.

JavaScript
Enable JavaScript for pages that depend on scripted menus, form validation, or client-side navigation. A page may appear blank or stop after its first screen when scripts are disabled. Enabling the switch does not guarantee success: the PSP supports only a limited subset of the JavaScript and browser behavior expected by newer sites, so a script-heavy page can still fail with the setting enabled.
Flash
The browser includes a Flash setting, but PSP-1000 owners have an additional prerequisite. Sony’s instructions require enabling Flash Player under System Settings and completing the Internet activation procedure before Flash content can operate on that model. Flash itself is obsolete on the modern Web, so this check is relevant only to older pages that still use it; it will not repair a site built for newer Web standards.
Conserve Memory
For a large page that stalls, stops partway through loading, or reports a memory-related failure, turn on Conserve Memory. Sony describes this mode as using less memory to display pages containing a larger amount of data. The trade-off is reduced image quality. It is a way to fit a page within the PSP’s available memory, not a general speed boost and not a compatibility upgrade.
4. Correct text and layout presentation
If the page loads but text is unreadable, characters are wrong, or the arrangement is unusable, open the browser’s View menu and test one change at a time.
Display mode
Choose another display mode when columns overlap, a page is wider than the screen, or content is forced into an awkward arrangement. Different modes change presentation; they do not rewrite the page or supply missing scripts.

Text size
Increase text size when small type is clipped or difficult to read, or reduce it when headings and controls wrap into unusable stacks. Recheck the same page after each change so you know which setting affected the result.
Character encoding
Specify a different character encoding when letters are replaced by symbols, accented characters are wrong, or a page uses an older encoding that the automatic choice did not detect. Encoding changes affect how received bytes are interpreted; they cannot fix a server that sends incomplete data or a layout that depends on unsupported code.
Sony’s documentation explicitly warns that some pages may not display properly. The warning applies even when the connection is healthy and the view controls are set sensibly:
“Some Web pages may not display properly.”

5. Test whether the page is beyond the stock browser
After the network, cache, content switches, and presentation controls have been checked, compare the failing site with a simple page. The pattern matters more than a single error message.

- Simple pages fail as well: return to the WLAN and saved-connection checks. A browser setting is unlikely to explain total inability to reach pages.
- Simple pages work, but the site reports an SSL or certificate problem: the site may require encryption protocols or certificate authorities that the PSP does not understand.
- The first screen appears, then scripts, menus, or forms fail: the site may depend on JavaScript features outside the browser’s limited implementation.
- The page stops while loading a large layout or many images: memory pressure may be involved; Conserve Memory can sometimes allow a reduced-quality rendering, but not a full modern page.
- Text and images appear but the layout is visibly broken: the site may rely on CSS, scripting, or responsive behavior the legacy engine cannot reproduce.
The PSP Developer Wiki’s technical reference attributes these limitations to the stock browser’s legacy TLS and certificate support, limited JavaScript, and constrained memory budget. Those details explain why a settings change can help one page while another remains impossible. They are a secondary technical explanation, not a replacement for Sony’s more general warning.
Do not conclude that every HTTPS page must fail, and do not chase a universal PSP error code. The browser can reach some sites, while protocol requirements, certificate chains, scripts, and page size vary from one site to another.

7. Advanced alternatives: homebrew browsers
The PSP Developer Wiki describes two non-stock possibilities: Opera Mini running through PSPKVM and Tilefinch. They belong in an advanced section because they are not routine fixes for a stock console.

Opera Mini through PSPKVM
This approach historically relies on Opera’s server-side proxy to transform pages before sending them to the PSP. Its usefulness therefore depends on old Opera services continuing to accept the client and on the PSPKVM setup working on the particular console. Service availability and compatibility can change, and current operation is not guaranteed.
Tilefinch
The listed Tilefinch setup requires custom firmware and a compatible 64 MB memory mode. That requirement limits it to PSP models and configurations that can provide the required memory arrangement. Installing custom firmware carries more effort and risk than changing a browser checkbox, so it is inappropriate as a first response to a single broken page.
Decide whether the extra complexity is justified
- Use the stock troubleshooting sequence when the symptom could still be Wi-Fi, cache, content settings, or memory pressure.
- Consider an alternative browser only when you specifically need access to sites the stock browser cannot handle and you understand the firmware, memory, and service dependencies.
- Back up important data and follow documentation for the exact PSP model and firmware before changing system software.
- Expect conditional results rather than a guaranteed modern-Web experience; neither option removes every protocol, certificate, script, or memory limitation.
8. A compact recovery checklist
- Try a small, uncomplicated page and note whether every page or only one site fails.
- If nothing loads, enable the WLAN switch, disable WLAN Power Save temporarily, move closer to the access point, inspect the saved profile, and check interference and MAC filtering.
- Set the browser to manual connection selection if it keeps choosing the wrong saved network.
- Press Triangle, open Tools, delete the cache, and refresh. Remove cookies or authentication information only if stale account state remains a plausible cause.
- Open Tools > Settings > View Settings and verify Images and any required JavaScript or Flash option. Remember that PSP-1000 Flash activation also requires System Settings and Internet activation.
- For a large page, enable Conserve Memory and accept lower image quality as the trade-off.
- Use the View menu to adjust display mode, text size, or character encoding when the problem is visual or typographic.
- Compare the result with a simple page. If only a modern, script-heavy, certificate-dependent site still fails, classify it as a stock-browser compatibility limit rather than endlessly repeating cache changes.
- Choose another device for dependable access, or investigate homebrew alternatives only with model-specific requirements and their service dependencies in mind.
The practical boundary is clear: PSP network and browser settings can recover a connection, remove stale state, reduce memory pressure, or improve presentation. They cannot turn the legacy stock browser into a current Web browser.
