Start by identifying the streaming route, then update SteamOS and the relevant client before changing display controls. Compare the same game in SDR and HDR: if SDR looks normal while HDR is dim or gray, investigate the HDR chain and calibration; if the picture contains smearing or large blocky color areas, investigate encoder and decoder settings instead. Steam Remote Play and Moonlight with Sunshine have different requirements, so a fix for one path may not apply to the other.
There is no single universal cure. The host GPU, operating system, game, Steam Deck model, streaming app, HDR state and display configuration all affect the result. The sequence below narrows the cause without treating a historical bug fix or a display adjustment as a guarantee for every setup.
First, identify what is actually streaming the game
On the Deck, determine whether the game is coming through Steam Remote Play or through Moonlight connected to Sunshine. They use different video pipelines and expose different HDR settings.
- Steam Remote Play: the host game is launched through Steam and the Deck connects with Steam’s built-in streaming feature. Steam client updates and Steam Support’s encoder/decoder guidance are the relevant references.
- Moonlight/Sunshine: Sunshine runs on the host and Moonlight is the client on the Deck. HDR10 streaming is documented as beta, with additional host, display, encoder and client requirements.
Also record the Deck model (LCD or OLED), host operating system, host GPU, whether the game is HDR-capable, and whether the symptom is merely dim/desaturated or includes motion smearing and block-shaped color regions. These details determine which branch of the troubleshooting process is appropriate.

Use this order of operations
- Install current stable SteamOS updates and update the Steam client, Moonlight or Sunshine as applicable.
- Turn HDR off temporarily on the host and in the streaming client, then compare the same scene in SDR.
- If SDR is correct, check the HDR requirements, resolution match and calibration steps for your streaming route.
- If artifacts look like smearing or large blocks rather than a tonal shift, apply the narrowly targeted encoder/decoder checks.
- Only after those tests, adjust Deck display rendering, network quality or game settings.
Change one setting at a time and retest the same game scene. A clean comparison is more useful than changing several controls and losing track of which one affected the image.
Update before diagnosing a color bug
Valve has documented more than one color-related streaming fix, but those notes do not establish that every washed-out image has the same cause. SteamOS 3.5.8 Preview notes dated December 1, 2023 state: “Fixed incorrect colors (gamma) when using Steam In-Home Streaming.” Valve’s later stable Steam client notes from September 2026 report “Improved video color range” and add support for HDR streaming on Steam Deck OLED.
These are release-note statements, not a measured success rate or a promise that an update will correct your particular host and game. Nevertheless, testing on current stable software is essential: an old client can preserve a problem that has already been addressed, while a current client gives you a known baseline.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Update the Deck
- Open the Steam menu on the Deck.
- Choose Settings, then System.
- Install any available SteamOS update and restart when prompted.
- Open the desktop or gaming-mode software update controls if Moonlight or another client was installed separately, and bring that client to its current stable release.
Update the host’s Steam client as well when using Remote Play. For Moonlight/Sunshine, update both applications rather than updating only the Deck client.

Run an SDR-versus-HDR comparison
Disable HDR on the host and in the streaming client for one test session. Keep the game, resolution and viewing scene unchanged. If the SDR stream has normal contrast and color but the HDR stream is dim, gray or desaturated, the HDR state, tone mapping, calibration or capability chain is implicated. This comparison narrows the search; it does not identify the exact failing component by itself.
Interpreting the result
- SDR and HDR both look washed out: check the stream route, software versions, Deck display rendering and possible range or decoder issues. Do not assume HDR calibration is the only explanation.
- SDR is normal, HDR is wrong: follow the HDR requirements and calibration checks for Moonlight/Sunshine or the HDR support path in Remote Play.
- Only fast motion produces streaks or colored blocks: treat this as a possible encoder/decoder artifact, not as a simple brightness setting.
- The local game on the Deck is also wrong: the streaming path may not be the root cause; check the Deck’s own display rendering and the game’s local HDR configuration.
Moonlight and Sunshine: verify the complete HDR chain
Moonlight’s setup guide describes HDR10 streaming as beta. It warns about possible color artifacts and scaling artifacts, especially when the stream resolution differs from the host display. Sunshine’s documentation adds host-side requirements that are easy to overlook.
Check host hardware and display support
- The Windows host GPU must be capable of encoding HEVC Main 10 for HDR streaming.
- The host must have an HDR-capable display, or an HDR-capable EDID emulator when the host is operating without a suitable physical display.
- The Moonlight client must support the required HDR playback path. A Deck client setting alone cannot compensate for a host that cannot produce an HDR stream.
An HDR-capable display or EDID emulator is a prerequisite for some host configurations, not a general remedy for a color mismatch. Buying a dock, cable, router or display is not established as a universal fix for washed-out streaming.

For Moonlight/Sunshine, the client HDR option must be enabled for an HDR stream. If it is disabled, the stream is SDR even if Windows and the game are configured for HDR. Set the stream resolution to match the host display when using HDR. Moonlight lists scaling artifacts as a known issue when resolutions differ, and scaling can be mistaken for a color problem because gradients and bright areas become visibly distorted.

Toggle host HDR if it was already enabled
Moonlight’s guide notes that if HDR was enabled on the host before the connection was made, turning host HDR off and back on may be necessary for the stream to enter HDR correctly. Disconnect the session, toggle HDR in Windows, reconnect, and then check the client HDR option again. This is a state-reset step, not a permanent calibration method.
Calibrate Windows and the game for the Deck screen
Sunshine recommends calibrating HDR in Windows and separately in the game for the client display. A practical sequence is:
- On the Windows host, open the Windows HDR Calibration app and run its black-level, peak-brightness and saturation adjustments while considering the Deck as the viewing display.
- Save the resulting calibration profile.
- Start the game through the stream and repeat the game’s own HDR calibration screens, adjusting until dark detail is visible without lifting blacks and highlights are bright without clipping.
- Retest after reconnecting. Keep the same in-game scene so you can distinguish a calibration change from a connection or encoder change.
Sunshine cautions that some GPUs can provide lower image quality or encoding performance in HDR than in SDR. If HDR remains poor after the capability and calibration checks, compare the same game in SDR rather than assuming a Deck control will correct the host encoder’s output.

Steam Remote Play: separate color-range issues from video artifacts
Steam Support documents NVIDIA encoder/decoder incompatibilities that can produce persistent smearing or large blocky color areas. Those recommendations are specific to the named artifacts; they are not a blanket cure for every dim or desaturated stream.

When the symptom is smearing
Enable client hardware decoding, or disable hardware encoding on the host, then reconnect and test the same motion sequence. Change only one of these options at a time. Smearing that disappears after one change points toward an encoder/decoder interaction rather than HDR tone mapping.
When the symptom is large blocky color regions
If the blocks are associated with NVIDIA hardware encoding, disable host hardware encoding and test again. A blocky image caused by an encoder path can coexist with correct overall brightness, so do not use a successful artifact fix as evidence that HDR calibration is correct.
When the image is simply dim or desaturated
Do not disable hardware encoding automatically. First perform the SDR/HDR comparison and verify the Remote Play client and SteamOS versions. The historical gamma fix and the September 2026 color-range improvement show that software handling can matter, but neither note identifies a universal current defect.
Adjust the Deck’s own display rendering carefully
SteamOS 3.5 added Settings → Adjust Display Colors. Valve describes the default rendering as emulating sRGB and provides three rendering modes:

| Mode | What it changes | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Native | Uses the Deck panel’s native color rendering. | It changes the Deck display appearance; it does not repair an incorrectly encoded stream. |
| sRGB | Targets sRGB-like rendering and is the SteamOS default described by Valve. | Use the preview or a familiar game scene to judge whether the image is more natural. |
| Boosted | Increases apparent vibrancy. | Valve warns that Boosted may clip gradients, removing detail in smooth color transitions. |
The same page includes vibrancy and color-temperature adjustments. Use the preview or the game image, make small changes, and record the original values so you can undo them. These controls affect how the Deck panel renders the incoming picture; they are not guaranteed fixes for incorrect HDR tone mapping, a host color-range mismatch or a Moonlight scaling artifact.

| What you see | Most useful next check | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| Uniformly dim, gray or desaturated image | Compare SDR and HDR; verify HDR state, client support and calibration. | Do not assume the Deck’s vibrancy slider will repair the stream. |
| Dark detail is crushed or highlights look flat only in HDR | Recalibrate Windows and the game for the Deck display; verify host HDR was toggled if required. | Do not treat an HDR-capable display as proof that the whole chain is configured correctly. |
| Persistent motion smearing | For Remote Play, test client hardware decoding and host hardware encoding as separate changes. | Do not generalize this encoder fix to ordinary dim colors. |
| Large blocky color areas | For NVIDIA-related Remote Play artifacts, test with host hardware encoding disabled. | Do not infer that HDR is at fault without an SDR comparison. |
| Color shifts or scaling artifacts after changing resolution | Match Moonlight stream resolution to the host display and reconnect. | Do not add sharpening or saturation before the resolution test. |
Check whether the problem is local to streaming
Run the game locally on the Deck, if the title supports it, and look at the same type of scene. This is a diagnostic question rather than a claim about the result. If the local image is also dim, investigate SteamOS display rendering, the game’s local HDR settings and the Deck model. If the local image is normal but the stream is not, concentrate on the host, encoder, client decoder and HDR conversion path.
Network and quality settings come later
Steam recommends a wired network for the best streaming experience. A wired host or Deck connection can reduce packet loss and bitrate instability, but networking alone is not an established color-calibration fix. After the color-path checks, try lowering the game’s resolution or turning off V-sync if the stream is unstable. These are general quality suggestions from Steam Support, not documented remedies for incorrect gamma or HDR tone mapping.

Deck model and host combinations matter
Steam’s September 2026 stable client notes specifically add support for HDR streaming on Steam Deck OLED. That statement does not mean every OLED setup will display HDR correctly, nor does it establish that LCD Decks share identical behavior. Keep the model in your troubleshooting record, along with the host GPU and operating system.
For Moonlight/Sunshine, the decisive combination is usually the host’s HEVC Main 10 capability, host display or EDID state, Moonlight HDR setting, matched resolution and Windows/game calibration. For Remote Play, the relevant combination is the SteamOS and Steam client versions, HDR state and any host/client encoder-decoder interaction.
Common mistakes that prolong the diagnosis
- Changing several controls at once: switching Boosted mode, enabling HDR, changing resolution and altering game brightness hides the cause. Revert and test one variable at a time.
- Calling every gray image an HDR failure: SDR can also look wrong because of software color-range handling or display rendering.
- Using a vibrancy boost to hide clipped highlights: Boosted mode may clip gradients, so a more colorful picture is not necessarily a more accurate one.
- Ignoring resolution mismatch in Moonlight: scaling artifacts can look like color defects and are explicitly listed as a known HDR issue.
- Assuming a new release fixed all cases: Valve’s gamma and color-range notes document targeted improvements, not a universal guarantee.
- Buying hardware before isolating the path: an HDR display or EDID emulator may satisfy a Moonlight/Sunshine host prerequisite, but no cited evidence makes a dock, cable, router or calibration device a general cure.
A compact decision checklist
- Write down the route: Remote Play or Moonlight/Sunshine.
- Record Deck model, host OS, host GPU, game and current HDR state.
- Update SteamOS, Steam and the applicable streaming software.
- Run the same scene in SDR and HDR.
- If Moonlight/Sunshine is involved, verify HEVC Main 10 encoding, HDR-capable host display or EDID, client HDR enabled, matched resolution and host HDR toggle if needed.
- Calibrate Windows HDR and the game for the Deck display.
- If Remote Play shows smearing or blocks, apply the corresponding hardware decoding or encoding test, not a generic color tweak.
- Use SteamOS 3.5-or-later Adjust Display Colors only to tune the Deck panel’s appearance, remembering that Boosted can clip gradients.
- Try wired networking, lower resolution or V-sync changes only as later quality tests.
- Compare with a local game run when possible to determine whether the fault follows the stream.
The most reliable outcome is a narrowed cause: HDR compatibility and calibration, Deck display rendering, a Remote Play encoder/decoder artifact, resolution scaling, or general stream quality. Because official documentation covers specific bugs and failure modes rather than every host-and-game combination, keep the working configuration and change log so a future SteamOS, client or GPU update can be evaluated against a known-good SDR and HDR comparison.
