If a rally game plays the engine and effects but you cannot hear the co-driver or other drivers, treat it as two separate problems: an in-game dialogue setting and an audio-routing or microphone path. Enable the co-driver voice control, balance its dedicated sliders, select an output mode that matches your actual speakers or headset, then verify the operating-system device and voice-chat binding. The sequence below covers EA SPORTS WRC and DiRT Rally 2.0 on PC and gives equivalent checks for PlayStation and Xbox.
First identify which audio is failing
“Voice” in a rally game can mean the scripted co-driver calls, live voice chat from other players, or both. They use different controls and can fail independently.
| What you hear | Likely path | First check |
|---|---|---|
| Engine, tyres and music; no scripted calls | Co-driver setting, speech slider, or channel routing | Enable Co-Driver Voice and raise co-driver/speech levels |
| Scripted calls are audible; other players cannot hear you | Microphone selection, mute, privacy permission, or push-to-talk | Check the selected input and the voice-chat binding |
| Other players are silent, but the co-driver works | Network voice toggle, output mix, or lobby voice settings | Verify network voice is enabled and the intended output is active |
| All game sound is missing | Master output, console/PC device, cable, or receiver | Test the platform output with another application |
Reproduce the fault in a quiet stage, tutorial, or solo session. Note whether engine and effects continue while speech disappears; that observation determines whether to start in the game mixer or in the platform audio chain.
EA SPORTS WRC: turn the co-driver on and balance the mix
EA SPORTS WRC exposes separate controls for the output profile, individual sound groups, and the co-driver. A global volume increase is not always the right fix because a loud engine or music track can mask calls.

Choose the correct Audio Mastering mode
Open the game’s audio options and select the profile that matches the physical path you are testing:
| Mode | Use it when | Diagnostic note |
|---|---|---|
| Headphones | A headset or headphones are connected directly to the controller, console, or PC | Best starting point for a two-channel headset test |
| TV | Sound comes from television speakers | Use when the TV, not an AV receiver, is the final output |
| Home Cinema | A genuine multichannel receiver and speaker layout are connected | Do not select it for a two-speaker setup |
| Soundbar | A soundbar is the actual playback device | Check the soundbar’s input and channel mode as well |
| Night Mode | You need reduced dynamic range at low listening levels | It changes the presentation; use it after confirming speech is present |
These modes are documented in EA’s accessibility audio controls. They are processing profiles, not a substitute for selecting the correct output device in Windows, PlayStation, or Xbox.
Enable Co-Driver Voice
- Open the game’s Settings or Options menu and enter Audio.
- Find the control labeled “Co-Driver Voice – Turn On/Off Co-Driver voice over.”
- Set it to On. If it was already on, switch it off, apply the change, and switch it on again.
- Confirm that co-driver timing and call-type options are not configured to suppress the calls you expect. Those gameplay controls are separate from the voice toggle.
Raise speech without making the car overwhelming
EA lists independent sliders for master, co-driver, speech, music, effects, engine, and surfaces. Start with master and co-driver at a comfortable high level, then lower the competing groups:
- Lower Engine and Effects first if calls are buried during acceleration or impacts.
- Reduce Music while testing so it cannot mask a quiet voice track.
- Adjust Speech separately from co-driver if other spoken announcements are also too quiet.
- Retest on a stage with frequent calls after every small change; changing all sliders at once makes the cause harder to identify.
If a headset is available, test with Headphones mastering and a simple stereo output before returning to a receiver or virtual-surround mode. This isolates the game mix from center-channel or surround processing.

DiRT Rally 2.0 on PC: check voice-chat binding and microphone routing
DiRT Rally 2.0’s PC configuration documentation includes network voice and a push-to-speak action. These settings govern live player chat; they do not replace the co-driver’s scripted audio controls.
Verify the network-voice control
- Open the game’s controller or keyboard configuration and locate the network voice or voice-chat action.
- Confirm that voice chat is enabled and that push-to-speak is bound to a key or button you can press while driving.
- Check for a physical mute switch on the headset and any in-game mute indicator.
- Join a private or low-pressure session and hold the assigned button while speaking. Release it to prevent an open microphone from transmitting continuously.
Select and test the microphone in the operating system
On Windows, open Settings > System > Sound, choose the intended microphone under Input, and use the input meter or test control. If the meter does not respond, the game cannot receive a usable signal. Check Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone and allow desktop applications to access the microphone.
Disconnect or disable unused microphones temporarily—such as a webcam or monitor microphone—so the game cannot select the wrong endpoint. After changing the Windows default device, completely exit and restart the game; many games read the default route only during launch.
When effects work but dialogue is silent: diagnose the output route
Speech can disappear even while engine and tyre sounds remain audible when the output device, channel layout, or spatial processing sends dialogue to a channel you are not hearing. Community reports describe this as a possible cause, but they are anecdotal diagnostic leads rather than a universal explanation.

Test the physical output path
- Identify the final device: headset, monitor speakers, television, soundbar, or AV receiver.
- In the platform’s audio settings, select that exact device instead of leaving an old HDMI, Bluetooth, or controller output selected.
- For a quick isolation test, switch to built-in speakers or a directly connected stereo headset.
- Play a stage and listen for the co-driver. If speech returns on the alternate output, the original cable, receiver, or endpoint is the fault domain.
Rule out an incorrect channel layout
Use a stereo profile when the hardware has two speakers or a conventional headset. Avoid a surround profile if no center or rear speakers are physically connected. In some installations, dialogue may be mixed toward a center channel; a stereo test can reveal that the game is producing speech but the receiver is not delivering that channel.
Temporarily disable Windows spatial audio, virtual-surround enhancements, console 3D-audio processing, and receiver up-mixing. Test with the simplest unprocessed stereo path, then re-enable one feature at a time after speech is confirmed.
Windows routing checklist
- Open Settings > System > Sound and set the headset, TV, or receiver as the output device.
- Open Volume mixer and confirm the rally game is not muted or assigned to a different output than the system default.
- Check the device’s channel format and choose stereo for a two-channel test.
- Turn off spatial audio and third-party virtual-surround effects temporarily.
- Restart the game after changing the default output.
PlayStation and Xbox routing checklist
Use the console’s Settings audio page to select the connected headset, TV, or receiver as the output. Confirm that chat audio is not set to a different destination from game audio, and check the controller or headset mute switch. For testing, choose uncompressed stereo or the console’s plain stereo option when available, disable extra 3D or surround processing, and launch the game again. Menu names vary by console generation and system software, so follow the labels shown on the console rather than a guide for a different version.

- Reproduce and classify: use a quiet stage or tutorial and note whether engine/effects are present, whether scripted calls are absent, and whether live chat also fails.
- Enable the in-game voice: in EA SPORTS WRC, turn on Co-Driver Voice. In DiRT Rally 2.0, confirm network voice and the push-to-speak action separately.
- Rebalance: raise master, co-driver, and speech; lower engine, effects, music, and surfaces enough to make a call obvious.
- Match the output mode: use Headphones for a headset and a stereo/TV profile for two speakers or direct HDMI. Do not use Home Cinema or another surround profile without matching channels.
- Set the platform endpoint: select the actual headset, TV, soundbar, or receiver in Windows, PlayStation, or Xbox audio settings.
- Remove processing: disable spatial, virtual-surround, and receiver up-mixing features for the test.
- Check input and permissions: select the intended microphone, verify its level meter, remove mute switches, and allow microphone access. Confirm the push-to-talk key or button.
- Restart after device changes: close and relaunch the game so it re-reads the default input and output devices.
- Compare outputs: test built-in speakers versus a headset. A fault that follows one device points to that device or its route; a fault that follows the game points to its settings or installation.
- Escalate by scope: if one title fails, use that title’s official support route. If every game loses dialogue, troubleshoot the platform, driver, cable, receiver, or headset before changing game settings again.
How to interpret common symptoms
“I can hear the car but not the co-driver”
Start with Co-Driver Voice, co-driver and speech sliders, then test Headphones or stereo mode. If a direct headset restores speech, investigate HDMI or surround routing rather than raising the master volume indefinitely.
“The co-driver is too quiet”
Increase co-driver and speech independently, reduce engine, effects, music, and surfaces, and retest. A louder master slider alone raises every competing sound and may leave the relative balance unchanged.
“The co-driver works, but nobody hears me”
This is an input-path problem. Verify the operating-system microphone, privacy permission, headset mute, network-voice setting, and push-to-speak binding. Test the microphone meter outside the game before changing output settings.

“Nobody in voice chat is audible, but scripted calls work”
Check the network-voice toggle and the chat-output destination. The game can send co-driver audio through the game mix while directing live chat to a separate platform or headset endpoint.

“Speech vanished after changing a receiver or HDMI device”
Set the new device as the platform output, select TV or stereo in the game, disable surround processing, and restart. If the old device works immediately, inspect the receiver’s input assignment and channel configuration.
Hardware and setup choices that simplify diagnosis
A model-neutral stereo gaming headset with a microphone is useful as a troubleshooting tool because it supplies a dedicated headphone output and a known microphone input. Confirm compatibility with your PC, PlayStation, or Xbox before buying. Use it first with spatial and virtual-surround processing disabled; once both co-driver and chat work, reintroduce optional processing one feature at a time.
A headset is not mandatory. Two-speaker TV output can work reliably when the game is set to TV or stereo and the console or PC is actually sending audio to the television. The important distinction is a clearly identified two-channel path versus a surround profile whose center or rear channels are not physically present.

When to contact official support
EA’s support hub for EA SPORTS WRC provides connection troubleshooting, PC diagnosis using DxDiag, and crash or freezing guidance. Use those routes after completing the settings, routing, and alternate-output tests; include your platform, output device, mastering mode, channel layout, and whether another game has the same problem.
DiRT Rally 2.0 has limited game-specific support listed by EA, so general EA troubleshooting and community channels may be the available paths. Describe the exact symptom—co-driver missing, live chat missing, microphone not detected, or dialogue absent only on one output—and list every device tested. That information helps support distinguish a game configuration issue from a platform or hardware routing fault.
