When Apache or Nginx serves the wrong site, the cause is almost always one of five boundaries: DNS, the address and port being listened on, hostname matching, fallback ordering, or TLS selection. Check those boundaries in that order. Apache exposes its parsed virtual-host map with apachectl -S (or httpd.exe -S on Windows); Nginx exposes configuration and startup problems when its server-name table cannot be built. The sections below show how to isolate each failure without guessing.
What a virtual-host mismatch actually means
A virtual host (Apache) or server block (Nginx) is selected only after a request reaches a particular local address and port. The web server then compares the hostname supplied by the client with the names configured for that listener. A directive such as ServerName or server_name does not create a DNS record and cannot make a hostname reach your machine.
That means a request can display the wrong site even when the file paths and application code are correct. For example, if two domains resolve to one IP and the request hostname does not match either configuration, the server must use a default or first-listed context. If HTTPS is involved, TLS may select a context from SNI before the HTTP Host header is available, so a certificate or handshake mismatch can look like an ordinary routing error.
Use this fault-isolation order
- Resolve DNS. Confirm every hostname users request resolves to the intended server address. Check both the apex name and each alias you publish.
- Confirm the listener. Make sure the request reaches the address and port named by the Apache
<VirtualHost>or Nginxlistendirective. - Check hostname declarations. Compare the exact request hostname with Apache
ServerName/ServerAliasor Nginxserver_name. - Inspect fallback behavior. Determine which virtual host is first for Apache’s matching address/port set, or which Nginx server is the default for the listen socket.
- For HTTPS, verify TLS selection. Inspect SNI and certificate coverage separately from the later HTTP
Hostmatch. - Read the server’s parsed configuration. Apache’s
-Soutput and Nginx’s startup diagnostics reveal what the daemon actually loaded, not what an editor window appears to contain.
Fix Apache virtual-host problems
1. Verify DNS before editing Apache
Start with the hostname in the browser or client request. It must resolve to the IP address on which Apache is listening. If a name points to an old server, a different interface, or a load-balancer address that does not forward to this Apache instance, no change to ServerName can correct the result. Check each requested name, including aliases and the HTTPS name, rather than checking only the primary domain.

After DNS is corrected, allow the client to use the intended address and test again. A local hosts-file override or cached answer can make one workstation behave differently from the public DNS answer, so compare from the same network and client that exhibits the problem.
2. Match the address and port in <VirtualHost>
Apache first narrows candidates by the connection’s local address and port. The virtual-host declaration must therefore cover the interface and port that received the request. A block for one address or port cannot win a request arriving on another. Pay particular attention when HTTP and HTTPS are configured in separate blocks: a correct port-80 block does not prove that the port-443 block is correct.

If the server has multiple interfaces, use the address that DNS actually returns and ensure the corresponding port is open and served by Apache.
3. Set an explicit ServerName and complete the aliases
Every name-based Apache virtual host should contain an explicit ServerName. Add every alternate hostname with ServerAlias, including names users type with and without a common prefix when both are intended to reach the same site. Apache warns that omitting ServerName can cause an implicitly derived name to influence matching, which makes an otherwise clear configuration difficult to predict.

</VirtualHost>The names in the request must match the configured names. A typo, an omitted alias, or a name present only in a different port block leaves Apache with no name match in the best address/port set.
4. Understand Apache’s fallback
Apache chooses the best address and port first, then evaluates ServerName and ServerAlias. If no name matches within that address/port set, Apache serves the first listed virtual host for that set. This is why an apparently unrelated site often appears: it is not necessarily being selected by its name; it may simply be the default ordering.
Do not “fix” this by rearranging files until you know why the name failed. Rearranging can change the symptom while leaving DNS, the port, or the missing alias unresolved. Use ordering deliberately only after correcting the intended names and listener.
5. Inspect Apache’s parsed map with -S
On Unix-like systems run:
apachectl -SOn Windows, use:
httpd.exe -SApache’s documentation notes: “If you are trying to debug your virtual host configuration, you may find the -S command line switch useful.” The output shows how Apache parsed addresses, ports, names, and default ordering. Use it to find duplicate names, a missing alias, a block attached to the wrong port, or an unintended first virtual host.

Trace each failing hostname through the output. Confirm that its name appears under the expected address and port and that the intended block is not shadowed by an earlier default. Correct the configuration, reload Apache, and repeat the same request with the intended Host header. Testing the header directly separates Apache matching from browser redirects and cached pages.
curl -H 'Host: site-a.example' http://SERVER_ADDRESS/Replace SERVER_ADDRESS with the address being tested and use the same port represented by the virtual-host block. The response should come from the site associated with that hostname; if it does not, return to the -S map and listener check.

1. Confirm the listen socket
Nginx can select a server block only among blocks attached to the address and port that accepted the connection. Check the listen directive for the failing protocol and compare it with the address returned by DNS. Separate HTTP and HTTPS listeners, and separate interfaces, can have different defaults and different sets of names.

2. Compare the request with server_name
Nginx supports exact names, wildcard names, and regular-expression names. The hostname in the request must fit one of the declarations attached to the selected listen socket. Keep names explicit where possible: an exact declaration makes it easier to see which site should receive a request, while a broad wildcard can absorb names you did not intend to publish.
When regular expressions are used, quote expressions containing characters that Nginx could otherwise interpret as configuration syntax. A syntactically valid expression that was parsed differently from what you intended can produce a routing result that looks like a default-server problem.
3. Account for Nginx’s precedence and default server
Nginx applies its documented matching rules across exact, wildcard, and regular-expression names. Precedence matters: two declarations that both appear to cover a hostname do not have equal priority. Review the complete set on the same listen socket rather than reading only the block you expected to win.
Every listen socket has a default server for unmatched traffic. If no server_name matches, that default handles the request. An unexpected first site therefore indicates either a hostname mismatch or an unintended default assignment, not necessarily a problem with the document root of the displayed site.

Use a request carrying the intended host name to test the match independently of DNS:
curl -H 'Host: site-a.example' http://SERVER_ADDRESS/Run the test against the address and port for the Nginx block. If the expected site still does not respond, inspect the other blocks on that socket for overlapping exact, wildcard, or regex names and identify which one is configured as the default.

4. Resolve server-name hash startup errors
At startup Nginx builds a hash table for configured server names. If it reports could not build the server_names_hash, follow the documented remedies rather than deleting names:
- Increase
server_names_hash_bucket_sizewhen an unusually long name cannot fit in a bucket. - Increase
server_names_hash_max_sizewhen the configuration contains many names.
After changing the relevant limit, validate the configuration and restart or reload Nginx according to your deployment procedure. Keep names concise and explicit where practical; hash tuning addresses the table-building failure, while removing an alias can create a separate hostname mismatch.

TLS selection happens before normal HTTP matching
For HTTPS, the client begins with a TLS handshake. Nginx documents that server selection can occur during this handshake, before the request line and HTTP Host header are processed. The server can therefore present a certificate or select a TLS context before it has seen the hostname that would be used for ordinary HTTP routing.
This creates two distinct checks:
- SNI and certificate coverage: Does the client send the intended server name in SNI, and does the certificate presented during the handshake cover that name?
- HTTP host matching: After TLS succeeds, does the request’s
Hostvalue match the intended server block or virtual host?
A certificate for another site, a client that does not send the expected SNI name, or an HTTPS block attached to the wrong address/port can make the browser report the wrong site even when the HTTP configuration looks correct. Inspect the certificate and handshake result first; then test the HTTP host match inside the negotiated connection.

Keep HTTP and HTTPS names aligned
Define the intended hostname and aliases in the HTTPS configuration as well as the HTTP configuration. A name present only on port 80 can work over HTTP while falling through to the HTTPS default. Conversely, an HTTPS block can be correct while DNS still sends the name to a different machine. Treat DNS, listener, names, and TLS as one chain and verify each link.

Apache always shows the first configured site
- Check that DNS points the hostname to this Apache server.
- Confirm the request’s address and port match the relevant
<VirtualHost>. - Add an explicit
ServerNameand every requiredServerAlias. - Run
apachectl -Sorhttpd.exe -Sand verify that the intended name appears in the expected set. - If the name genuinely does not match, either correct the name or intentionally configure the first-listed block as the fallback.
Nginx always shows the first or default site
- Verify the address and port in
listen. - Compare the requested hostname with exact, wildcard, and regex
server_namedeclarations. - Review precedence when more than one declaration could match.
- Identify the default server for that socket and decide whether it should receive unmatched requests.
- Test with an explicit
Hostheader to remove DNS from the test.
HTTP works but HTTPS reaches another site
- Check that DNS for the HTTPS hostname reaches the same intended address.
- Inspect the HTTPS listener or virtual-host port separately from HTTP.
- Verify SNI and the certificate presented during the handshake.
- Ensure the HTTPS configuration contains the same intended hostname and aliases.
- After TLS succeeds, test the HTTP
Hostmatch inside that connection.
Nginx will not start after adding names
- Read the exact startup error.
- For
could not build the server_names_hash, increaseserver_names_hash_bucket_sizefor long names. - Increase
server_names_hash_max_sizewhen many names exceed the table capacity. - Quote regular expressions that contain configuration-significant characters.
- Validate again before reloading so a syntax correction does not hide a separate routing error.
A repeatable verification checklist
- Write down the exact hostname, protocol, address, and port used by the failing request.
- Resolve that hostname and confirm the returned address is the server you intend to test.
- Inspect the Apache virtual-host map or the Nginx blocks attached to that socket.
- Confirm the hostname appears explicitly in the correct directive.
- Check whether another name declaration or the default ordering can capture unmatched traffic.
- For HTTPS, verify SNI and certificate coverage before interpreting the HTTP response.
- Send a direct request with the intended
Hostheader to test name matching without relying on DNS. - Correct one boundary at a time, reload the daemon, and repeat the same test so the change is attributable.
