A Minecraft version mismatch means the client and server disagree about the protocol version used during connection. “Outdated server!” means the server is older than the game on your computer. “Outdated client!” means your game is older than the server. Players normally fix the problem by launching the server’s exact version; administrators can add compatibility plugins or plan a server upgrade after backing up the world and checking plugins.
Read the error in the direction it gives you
The wording identifies which side is behind. Do not assume that the newest release is automatically the correct one: the server’s version is the reference for a player trying to join that server.

The message is about compatibility, not about which installation is defective. A server can be deliberately held on an older release for world, plugin, or community reasons, so changing to the newest launcher profile may make the mismatch worse.
Why Minecraft refuses the connection
During a connection, the client and server compare a protocol version number. If those numbers do not agree, the connection is refused before you can play. A release label is useful for choosing a launcher profile, but the protocol check is what actually determines whether the connection is accepted.

Different release names can share a protocol number. Consequently, seeing different labels does not always prove that the protocol is incompatible, and seeing similar labels does not guarantee compatibility. When the error appears, record the exact server version and the exact client profile rather than relying on a guess about which release is newer.
Fix “Outdated server Minecraft” as a player
If the screen says Outdated server!, your game is ahead of the server. You do not need to change the server to try the least-risk fix: run the server’s exact version in your official Minecraft launcher.
1. Find the server’s exact version
- Check the information available for the multiplayer server entry.
- If the entry does not give an unambiguous version, ask the server operator. An operator can run
/versionin the server console and tell you the result. - Write down the complete version identifier, including any release or build detail the operator provides. “Older” or “newer” is not precise enough when several releases are available.
The direction of the message is enough to tell you who is behind, but you still need the server’s exact version to select the correct installation.
2. Edit a launcher installation
- Open the official Minecraft Launcher.
- Open the Installations area and edit the profile you use for this server, or create a separate profile for it.
- In the profile’s version selector, choose the exact version reported by the server operator.
- Save the profile and launch it before connecting to the server again.
Previously downloaded versions remain available in the launcher, so selecting an older or different profile does not require reinstalling the game. Keeping a separate profile for a server also prevents an automatic change to your normal single-player or other-server installation.

3. Test without changing the server
Connect again using the newly selected profile. If the error changes or disappears, the original problem was the client profile. If the same message remains, verify the version spelling with the operator; a near match is not a reliable match.
Fix “Outdated client Minecraft” as a player
Outdated client! means your game is behind the server. Ask for the server’s exact version if it is not shown, then repeat the launcher procedure with that newer server version:
- Confirm the server version with the multiplayer entry or the operator’s
/versionresult. - In the official launcher, edit or create an installation profile.
- Select the server’s exact version rather than simply choosing a profile labeled “latest.”
- Save, launch that profile, and reconnect.
Updating only the client is the appropriate player-side action when the server is newer. If the server is intentionally restricted to another release, the operator may instead need to provide a compatible server or explain which profile the community uses.
Choose the right fix: player change or server change

For a single player, changing the launcher profile is usually the fastest and safest path. For a community that must accommodate several client versions, a compatibility plugin may be preferable to changing the world immediately.

Allow compatible versions with ViaVersion and ViaBackwards
ViaVersion: newer clients joining an older server
Install ViaVersion on a supported server so clients running newer versions can connect to an older server. The plugin translates network packets between the client and server protocol versions. Players do not install a corresponding client component for this arrangement.
Use this when the server must remain on its current release but some players have already moved to a newer game version. Confirm the plugin is active on the server, then test with a client version that previously produced Outdated server!.

ViaBackwards: older clients joining a newer server
Install ViaBackwards when the server is newer but players still need to connect with older clients. It translates in the opposite direction and is intended for clients that would otherwise receive Outdated client!.
Check the compatibility requirements of the server software and the plugin versions before enabling it. A translation layer can address protocol communication, but it cannot give an old client knowledge of every block, item, or other content introduced by the newer release.

Understand the content limitation
Protocol translation is not the same as making two releases identical. If one version contains blocks or items that the other version does not, a client lacking those definitions may not display them correctly. Treat compatibility plugins as a way to connect across supported protocol differences, not as a guarantee that every new feature will be visible or usable on every client.
Should you update the server instead?
Updating the server can remove a mismatch for players who are already on a newer client, but it is a migration, not a harmless toggle. A version update can convert the world irreversibly and can break plugins that have not been updated for the target release.

Before an upgrade
- Identify the exact target server version and the client versions you intend to support.
- Back up the complete world before starting the update. Keep the backup separate from the live world so it can be restored if the conversion fails.
- Check every installed plugin for compatibility with the target server version.
- Record the current server version, plugin list, and configuration so you can diagnose a change after the upgrade.
- Tell players which client profile they should use during the maintenance window.
After an upgrade
- Start the updated server in a controlled test period.
- Check that the world loads and that important areas, inventories, and permissions behave as expected.
- Review startup messages for plugins that failed to load or report incompatibility.
- Connect with the client version you plan to require and verify that the mismatch no longer appears.
- Keep the pre-upgrade backup until the new version has been operated successfully; do not overwrite it with a converted world immediately.
If a plugin fails after the update, restoring the old world alone may not be enough if the server software has already converted data. This is why a complete, separate backup and a compatibility check are essential.

The message still says “Outdated server!” after you changed profiles
- Confirm that the launcher actually started the edited profile, not another installation.
- Ask the operator for the exact server version again; do not rely on an approximate name.
- Check whether the server was restarted on a different version after you received the first answer.
- If the server is intentionally older, keep using its profile or ask whether ViaVersion is enabled.
The message still says “Outdated client!” after you updated the profile
- Verify that the selected profile matches the server’s full version identifier.
- Close and relaunch the game with that profile before reconnecting.
- Ask whether the server is running a newer build than the one originally reported.
- If the operator supports older clients, ask whether ViaBackwards is installed and configured for your release.
The server accepts the connection but content looks wrong
This can occur when ViaVersion or ViaBackwards is translating packets between releases with different blocks or items. Record the client version, server version, and the affected content, then report it to the administrator. Switching to the server’s exact version removes the translation layer and is the clearest diagnostic test.

Only some players receive the error
A mixed group usually has mixed client profiles. Have each affected player report the exact profile they launched and compare it with the server’s version. If the server accepts one release but rejects another, the administrator can decide whether to standardize clients, add a compatibility plugin, or schedule a server upgrade.
The error began immediately after a server update
First determine whether the server moved forward while players remained on the previous release. If so, players can select the new server version. If plugins also stopped working, stop treating the incident as only a client mismatch: review plugin compatibility and use the pre-update backup if the migration caused unacceptable damage.

Paper and Purpur are reported to display the Outdated client! and Outdated server! messages. Vanilla servers are reported to use Incompatible client! instead. These labels describe the same general problem—client and server cannot agree on a compatible protocol—but the exact sentence depends on the server software.
From version 1.16.4 onward, the sentence can appear in either direction. Do not infer the direction from a remembered message format; read the wording shown by the current server and verify the versions directly.
A practical decision tree
- Read the message. “Outdated server!” means your client is newer; “Outdated client!” means your client is older.
- Get the server version. Use the multiplayer entry or ask an operator to run
/versionin the console. - Try the matching launcher profile. This affects only your installation and carries no server migration risk.
- If many players need different versions, involve the administrator. ViaVersion targets newer clients joining an older server; ViaBackwards targets older clients joining a newer server.
- If the server will be upgraded, require a backup and plugin check first. A world conversion and plugin breakage are possible.
Prevent future version mismatches
- Keep a named launcher profile for each server rather than relying on a single profile that changes over time.
- Record the server’s exact version where players can find it.
- Announce planned server updates before changing the live world so players can select the corresponding client profile.
- Test compatibility plugins and server updates with a backup before inviting the whole community.
- When reporting a failure, include the message text, client profile, server version, and whether a compatibility plugin is installed.
These practices separate a simple per-player profile change from a server-wide migration and make the direction of the mismatch unambiguous.
