When a Valheim patch breaks a modded setup, first check whether the affected mods and the Valheim-specific BepInEx pack support the new game build. Then determine whether BepInEx is starting, whether the manager is launching the right game folder, or whether one plugin is crashing. Those are different failures, and each has a different fix; reinstalling everything at once can make the cause harder to find.
Before changing a setup that took time to build, back up your saves and export a profile that still works, if you have one. Record your Valheim build, BepInEx pack and mod versions, manager and profile, operating system, and the exact error text. These details help you identify what changed and restore your previous setup if troubleshooting makes things worse.
Why a Valheim update can stop mods from working
Valheim, its mod loader, and individual mods are updated independently. A game patch can therefore make a previously working mod or loader incompatible until its maintainer releases a compatible version. A mod manager can still show a mod as installed even when that mod does not work with the current game build.

If a mod has not been updated or its notes do not establish compatibility with your build, there may be no local repair to apply. Avoid treating an older mod as compatible merely because it installed successfully; preserve your working profile and wait for a compatible release or test without that mod.
A useful way to think about an update is as several separate version checks, not one “mods are updated” switch. The game may be current while the loader pack or one dependency is still on an older release. Conversely, one mod may already support the new build while another in the same profile does not. When a package page does not clearly mention your Valheim build, do not assume compatibility from its download date or from the fact that the manager installed it.
The BepInExPack Valheim README and the r2modman troubleshooting wiki provide tool-specific instructions; the community installation guide covers post-patch checks. Those pages were checked on October 11, 2026, but releases can change afterward. Confirm the current notes for your exact package and build before making version-specific changes.

Identify which part of the setup is failing
Use the visible symptom to choose a branch before changing files. A game that launches without plugins points first to loader, path, or launch-option checks. A crash during startup calls for isolating plugins. A multiplayer join problem calls for checking the server and client requirements and exact versions.

“The game doesn’t launch at all” and “the game launches but no mods are loading” are not interchangeable reports. If Valheim never opens, note whether the failure happens before the loader appears and preserve any error text; begin with the pack, platform, and installation checks. If Valheim opens but the expected BepInEx console or plugins are missing, prioritize loader startup, the configured game folder, and launch arguments. If the game opens and then crashes, use plugin isolation rather than repeatedly changing launch options.
Start with the game build, mods, and a recoverable profile
- Record the current setup. Note the Valheim version, the BepInEx pack version, each affected mod and its version, the manager and profile, your operating system, and any error message. Keep the wording of an error, especially if it names a file or folder.
- Protect saves and the profile. Back up your saves before changing the mod installation. If you have a working manager profile, export it so you have a known configuration to return to. The r2modman Valheim guide specifically recommends exporting a working profile before a game patch.
- Check the affected mod pages. Read each mod’s release notes for compatibility information about the Valheim build you now have. Check whether it has dependencies and whether those dependencies also need updates.
- Check the Valheim-specific BepInEx pack. This pack is a community-configured build for Valheim, not just a generic loader installation. Look for a compatible pack revision and install its dependencies through your manager where possible. The pack README recommends installing through Gale, Thunderstore Mod Manager, or r2modman and launching through the manager.
- Change one layer at a time. After updating a compatible pack or mod, launch and check the result before changing unrelated plugins. Keeping track of each change makes it easier to identify which version or plugin caused the failure.
Do not infer compatibility from a mod’s presence in a catalogue or from another player’s setup. The relevant evidence is whether the package maintainer identifies support for your game build and whether its required dependencies are present.
When checking a mod page, distinguish the plugin itself from the items it depends on. A plugin can be present and still fail if a required dependency is missing or at a version it does not support. Update dependencies only when the package instructions call for them, and record what you changed; updating every installed item at once can obscure which component restored—or broke—the launch.

If the maintainer has not released a compatible version, set that plugin aside, then test whether the rest of the profile works. That gives you a usable baseline without implying the old version is safe or compatible.
Check whether BepInEx starts on your platform
The BepInExPack Valheim instructions include platform-specific launch requirements. A game can appear to start normally while the loader fails to run, so verify the loader before concluding that every plugin is broken.

Windows
With the documented pack, a BepInEx console should appear when the loader starts. If the game opens without the console and no mods load, check the manager launch path and Steam launch arguments in the next section. The absence of the expected console is a reason to investigate loader startup; it does not by itself identify the cause.
Linux
- Make
start_game_bepinex.shexecutable, as required by the pack’s Linux instructions. - In Steam, open Valheim’s launch options and use
./start_game_bepinex.sh %command%. - Launch the game and check whether BepInEx starts before troubleshooting individual plugins.
If the script is not executable or Steam is not using the specified launch command, the loader may not start as intended.
Apple Silicon
The pack states that BepInEx does not run natively on Apple Silicon and documents launching through Rosetta with this Steam launch option:
/usr/bin/arch -x86_64 /bin/bash ./start_game_bepinex.sh %command%Without the x86_64 prefix, the game may start without BepInEx. Use the pack’s Rosetta launch instructions rather than treating a game launch alone as proof that mods loaded.
Manual installation
If you installed files yourself rather than through a manager, the pack instructions say to start from a clean game folder and extract the pack’s contents into the Valheim installation directory. The pack’s documentation also includes its own launch scripts and configuration, so follow those instructions rather than substituting generic BepInEx steps.
For most users, the pack’s documented managers—Gale, Thunderstore Mod Manager, and r2modman—provide the recommended managed installation and launch route. Manual installation is a separate option for people who manage files themselves; it requires following the pack’s clean-folder and extraction instructions. Avoid mixing assumptions from the two methods: a manager-managed profile and a manually modified game directory may not be launching or loading the same files.
If the game launches but no mods load
When Valheim opens but plugins do not appear to load, check that the manager points to the same game installation Steam launches and that Steam still has the required launch arguments. This branch is especially useful when a game update, reinstall, or library change may have left the manager configured for a different folder.
- Find Valheim’s actual Steam folder. In Steam, use the game’s Browse local files command to see the installation directory Steam is using.
- Compare the manager path. In the manager’s game or settings configuration, compare its Valheim directory with the folder opened by Steam. Correct the configured directory if they differ.
- Check Steam’s launch-argument box. Confirm that the required launch options have not been removed or overridden. Use the platform-specific option documented by the BepInEx pack where applicable.
- Launch from the manager. The pack recommends launching through Gale, Thunderstore Mod Manager, or r2modman for manager-managed installations. Check for the expected loader startup behavior before adding or changing plugins.
The r2modman troubleshooting wiki identifies a game-directory mismatch and overridden Steam launch arguments as checks when mods do not load. If both are correct but the loader still does not start, return to the pack’s instructions for your platform and installation method.
After each path or launch-option correction, test once before making another change. If the console appears and plugins start loading, you have evidence that the loader path was part of the problem. If nothing changes, note that result and move to the next relevant check rather than repeatedly toggling settings without a clear test.

If startup crashes, isolate the plugin that fails
A startup crash after a patch can come from an incompatible plugin or a missing or mismatched dependency. Test the loader without the plugins first; changing several mods together will not reveal which one is responsible.

- Close the game and move the plugins out of
BepInEx/pluginstemporarily. Keep them somewhere safe rather than deleting them. - Start Valheim with the loader installed but without those plugins. If the game still fails, the cause may be elsewhere in the loader, installation, or platform setup; plugin isolation has not yet identified an offender.
- If a clean start works, restore plugins in halves, launching after each batch. If a batch brings the failure back, divide that batch again and repeat until you narrow down the failing plugin.
- For the identified mod, check its release notes and dependencies against your exact Valheim build and installed pack. Update it only if a compatible version is available; otherwise leave it out while testing the rest of the profile.
- Restore the other plugins in controlled batches and launch again. This confirms whether the remaining set works together without reintroducing the known failure blindly.
This method is more informative than reinstalling the whole profile immediately: a successful clean start followed by a failure when one batch returns points toward a plugin or its dependencies.
Keep a short note of which batch you tested and whether the launch succeeded. Once you identify a failing plugin, do not put it back simply to make the list complete. Test the rest of the profile first; if everything else starts, you have isolated the problem and can leave the failing item disabled until its maintainer provides a compatible release.
Fix the r2modman black-screen case
If r2modman reports a black screen, its troubleshooting wiki documents a specific preloader-fix action. In the affected profile, open Settings → Debugging → Run preloader fix. Then wait for Steam validation to complete before testing the launch again. This is a targeted step for the reported r2modman black-screen issue, not a general repair for every crash or blank screen.
Do not interrupt validation or treat the menu action as proof that every plugin is compatible. Retest the same profile after validation; if the symptom persists, return to the appropriate branch based on whether the loader starts, a plugin crashes, or the failure is multiplayer-only.

A third-party r2modman Valheim guide reports a workaround for a preloader error that explicitly names a missing unstripped_corlib folder: create an empty folder with that exact name in the Valheim installation directory. Treat this as a symptom-specific reported workaround, not a guaranteed fix and not a response to unrelated preloader errors. First confirm that the error actually names this folder; if it does not, use the relevant loader or mod troubleshooting path instead.
The folder should be empty for this reported workaround. Do not apply it just because you see a generic preloader failure or a black screen; the wording of the error is what makes this step relevant. If the named error remains after the change, the guide does not make the workaround a guarantee, so continue with the tool-specific troubleshooting rather than repeating unrelated folder edits.
Repair a manager or loader installation that appears corrupted
If the loader installation appears damaged rather than merely incompatible, r2modman’s troubleshooting wiki documents a recovery sequence involving the download cache and profile import. Export the profile first so your setup is preserved.
- Disable the download cache in r2modman.
- Export the affected profile.
- Import the exported profile and check whether the import indicates a broken BepInEx installation.
- If the export/import step indicates the installation is broken, redownload BepInEx through the manager.
- Launch and confirm loader startup before restoring or updating plugins.
This sequence addresses a potentially corrupted installation. It does not make an outdated mod compatible with a new game build, so still check package release notes if the game launches but a particular plugin fails.

Use this recovery route when there is a reason to suspect the loader installation itself is damaged, not as the first response to every post-patch failure. The profile export helps preserve the mod configuration, while the loader redownload addresses the installation only when the import process indicates a broken BepInEx setup. Keep those two questions separate: whether the loader is intact, and whether each plugin supports the current game build.

For multiplayer, distinguish client-side mods from server-side mods. The server guide says server-side mods need to be installed on the server; some may also be required on clients. Do not tell every player to install every mod without checking the package’s requirements.
- For each mod involved in the session, check whether it is client-side, server-side, or requires installation in both places.
- Install server-side mods on the dedicated server. Install a mod on clients only when its instructions require it.
- Compare exact mod versions between the server and the clients that need that mod. Matching mod names alone may not be enough.
- Check the Valheim build and relevant dependencies on the affected machines, then retest the join after aligning the required components.
A join failure does not automatically mean that every client’s entire mod list must match. The relevant comparison is each mod’s stated client/server requirement and the exact versions of the components required in those locations.
For example, make a short server/client checklist with one row per mod: where it must be installed, its required version, and any dependency. Compare the server against only the clients that need that item. This is more precise than asking every player to copy the host’s full profile, which can add client-only or otherwise unnecessary mods and make a separate mismatch harder to spot.
If the setup uses a dedicated server, resolve server-side installation and version alignment before blaming a player’s local loader. If a player cannot join but local play works, compare that player’s required client components with the server’s corresponding versions. If all required versions and locations appear aligned, preserve the exact error and continue with the package’s own instructions; the available guidance does not establish one universal fix for every join failure.
Know when the platform limits the fix
The community modding guide’s instructions assume the Steam version of Valheim. It says Microsoft Store and Game Pass installations are harder to mod, and that Xbox clients cannot load mods. These are platform constraints, not evidence that a recent patch broke a previously compatible plugin. If you use one of those editions, verify whether the specific installation can support the loader before spending time on plugin-level repairs.
Likewise, on Apple Silicon, use the pack’s Rosetta instructions; on Linux, follow its executable-script and Steam launch-option requirements. A platform-specific loader startup issue should be resolved before diagnosing individual mods.
Platform and installation method should therefore be part of the initial diagnosis, not an afterthought. The pack’s scripts and configuration are for its Valheim-specific setup, while the community guide’s modding instructions assume Steam. A limitation of an edition or architecture cannot be fixed by installing a newer copy of an unrelated plugin.
A practical stopping point
Once Valheim starts with the loader, verify that the intended plugins load, then test the specific activity that failed—such as joining the server—before restoring the full profile. If the problem returns, use the symptom branch above: check compatibility and dependencies for a plugin failure, compare paths and launch arguments when no mods load, or compare server/client requirements for a multiplayer failure. Keep the exported profile and save backup until the repaired setup is confirmed.

It is reasonable to stop with a smaller working profile if one mod has no compatible release yet. A stable launch with the loader and compatible plugins is a useful test result; adding the unresolved mod back does not improve diagnosis. Revisit its release notes later, and only restore it when its maintainer’s compatibility information and dependencies fit your current Valheim build.
