When Windows says “The last USB device you connected to this computer malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it,” the cause is usually one of four things: a bad connection, insufficient power, a damaged device or cable, or a driver problem. Start with the quick physical checks, then use Device Manager to identify the exact error code before changing drivers.

The menu names below apply primarily to Windows 11. Windows 10 uses similar Device Manager and Windows Update screens, although some Settings paths differ.

1. Reconnect the device and try another port

  1. Unplug the USB device.
  2. Wait a few seconds, then reconnect it firmly.
  3. Try a different USB port on the computer.
  4. If you are using a USB hub, disconnect the hub and plug the device directly into the PC.
  5. If the hub has a separate power adapter, check that it is switched on and connected.

Do not overlook the cable. Look for bent connectors, cuts, kinks, loose plugs or visible damage. A device that works only when the cable is held at a particular angle usually needs a new cable or repair.

2. Test the USB device on another computer

Connect the same device, using the same cable if possible, to another computer. This separates a PC problem from a device problem:

Result Likely cause
It works on another computer The original PC, its USB port, power delivery or drivers are more likely to be at fault.
It fails on another computer too The device or cable may be defective and may need replacement.
It works only with its own software or driver Install the driver supplied by the device manufacturer.

Some specialist USB hardware needs a manufacturer-specific driver, so a failure on another PC is not always conclusive if that driver has not been installed there.

3. Check power, especially with USB hubs and laptops

Windows may fail to recognize a USB device when the computer cannot provide enough power. This can happen when:

  • the device requires more power than the port can provide;
  • a laptop battery is low and USB power has been limited;
  • several USB devices are drawing power at the same time;
  • the device needs external power; or
  • the computer’s hardware does not support that device’s power requirements.

Connect the laptop to AC power, unplug USB devices you are not using, and connect an externally powered device to its charger or power adapter. High-power storage devices, docking stations and other peripherals are more likely to expose this problem than a basic keyboard or mouse.

4. Find the USB error code in Device Manager

Device Manager can tell you whether Windows has detected the hardware and what failed.

  1. Open Start, type Device Manager, and select it.
  2. Look for a device with a yellow exclamation point. It may appear under Universal Serial Bus controllers, Other devices or a category related to the hardware.
  3. Right-click the device and select Properties.
  4. Read the message under Device status. Note the error code before trying a repair.

A missing entry does not prove that the USB port is dead. Windows may be detecting the device only briefly, or the connection may be failing before Device Manager can create a normal device entry.

5. Apply the fix for the displayed Device Manager code

Code 28: Drivers are not installed

Code 28 means Windows does not have a driver installed for the device. Check Windows Update first, then download the correct driver from the device manufacturer. For a laptop, desktop or motherboard-specific USB component, use the computer manufacturer’s support page and match the driver to your exact model and Windows version.

Code 31: Windows cannot load the required drivers

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Right-click the affected device.
  3. Select Update driver.
  4. Choose the available search option and follow the prompts.

If Windows reports that the best driver is already installed, check the manufacturer’s support page rather than repeatedly running the same update.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Codes 32, 40 and 41: Driver or device configuration failure

  1. In Device Manager, right-click the affected device.
  2. Select Uninstall device or Uninstall.
  3. Confirm the removal if prompted.
  4. Select Action from the Device Manager menu.
  5. Choose Scan for hardware changes.

Windows should detect the hardware again and rebuild its device entry. If it does not, unplug and reconnect the device, then repeat the scan.

Code 44: The device has stopped

Restart the computer. Microsoft’s documented resolution for Code 44 is a restart, which clears the stopped device state.

Code 45: The hardware is not currently connected

Code 45 means Windows has a record of the hardware but it is currently disconnected. Reconnect the USB device. The status should correct itself after Windows detects it again.

6. Update Windows and the device driver

To check for Windows updates in Windows 11:

  1. Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
  2. Select Check for updates.
  3. Install available updates and restart when prompted. The Power menu may show Update and restart or Update and shut down.

Windows Update may say that no driver updates are available. That does not necessarily mean the device has no driver problem. Use Device Manager for a manual check:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Expand the relevant category.
  3. Double-click the USB device.
  4. Open the Driver tab.
  5. Select Update Driver and follow the prompts.

If neither route finds a driver, visit the hardware manufacturer’s website. Download only the driver for the exact model and Windows version. For a USB accessory, start with the accessory maker; for a built-in port, dock or motherboard controller, check the PC or motherboard manufacturer.

7. Run Windows Update troubleshooting

Windows 11’s current Windows Update troubleshooting path is Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Windows Update > Run. Microsoft also directs Windows 11 users to the automated Windows Update troubleshooter in the Get Help app.

This is useful when updates themselves are failing, but it is not a replacement for testing the USB port, cable and device. A computer that cannot install updates may also fail to obtain a newer hardware driver.

8. Check USB-C-specific problems

USB-C is a connector type, not a guarantee that every USB-C port supports every function. A USB-C port may be used for phones, storage, docking stations, displays or audio adapters, and the port or accessory may not support the required feature.

If you are using a USB-C audio adapter, use a USB-C digital audio adapter. The analog audio adapter described in Microsoft’s USB-C guidance is not supported.

For a dock or display adapter, test the peripheral directly on the computer instead of through the dock. This helps identify whether the fault is in the USB-C port, the dock, its power supply or the attached device.

9. When the hardware probably needs replacing

Replacement is the likely solution when all of the following are true:

  • the device fails on more than one computer;
  • you have tried a known-good cable or power adapter;
  • the computer’s other USB ports work with different devices; and
  • the device still does not appear correctly in Device Manager.

Do not keep reconnecting a device with a damaged connector. A short or physically loose plug can damage the port as well as the accessory.

  • Settings > Devices > USB is a Windows 10 path, not the current Windows 11 USB troubleshooting path.
  • Disabling USB selective suspend and editing USB registry keys is not a verified standard Windows 11 repair procedure. The commonly cited Microsoft article concerns older Windows versions.
  • An old Device Manager Troubleshoot button shown in some guides is not a current Windows 11 USB repair route.

Use the actual Device Manager error code, physical testing and manufacturer support information instead of applying registry changes at random.

FAQ

Why does Windows say the last USB device malfunctioned?

Windows has either received a failure report from the device or cannot load the device’s driver. A bad cable, faulty port, insufficient power, damaged hardware and incompatible or missing drivers are common causes.

How do I reset a USB port in Windows 11?

Unplug the device, wait briefly and reconnect it to another port. You can also open Device Manager, uninstall the affected device, then select Action > Scan for hardware changes. Restarting Windows can clear a device state that has stopped responding.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is my USB device not showing in Device Manager?

The connection may be failing before Windows can identify the device. Try another port and cable, remove any hub, connect the computer to AC power, and test the device on another computer.

Should I uninstall USB drivers to fix an unrecognized device?

Only uninstall the affected device when Device Manager shows a relevant driver or configuration error, such as Codes 32, 40 or 41. Then use Action > Scan for hardware changes. Do not uninstall random USB controllers without a specific reason.

Why does my USB device work on another computer but not mine?

The original computer may have a driver, power, port or Windows Update problem. Install the latest driver from the device or computer manufacturer, update Windows, try a direct connection instead of a hub, and check the Device Manager status code.

The Bottom Line

Start with the simplest isolation test: try a different port, remove the hub, inspect or replace the cable, connect the PC to AC power, and test the device on another computer. If the hardware appears in Device Manager, read its status code and follow the matching driver or reinstall procedure. If it fails on multiple computers with a known-good cable and adequate power, the USB device itself is probably faulty.
