If contact-sharing screens appear when you bring devices close together, turn off Settings > General > AirDrop > Bring Devices Together. If a banner asks you to accept a photo, file, or other item, change AirDrop’s receiving access instead. These are separate features, so changing the wrong setting may not stop the prompt you’re seeing.
The quickest clue is what the screen offers to do: NameDrop involves selected contact details and appears when compatible devices are brought together; AirDrop involves receiving an item sent from another device. Neither prompt, by itself, proves that your iPhone was compromised. Identify which feature is involved, then use its own setting.
First identify which prompt you’re seeing
NameDrop and AirDrop can both appear to involve nearby devices, but they have different triggers and controls. Use the prompt’s content and timing to tell them apart. A contact-sharing screen tied to bringing devices close is a NameDrop prompt. A banner asking whether you want to receive a photo, file, or another item is an AirDrop request.
| What you notice | Likely feature | What it does | Setting to change |
|---|---|---|---|
| A contact-sharing screen appears when an iPhone or compatible Apple Watch is brought close to yours. | NameDrop | Offers to exchange selected contact details and Contact Poster information. | Settings > General > AirDrop > Bring Devices Together |
| A banner asks whether to accept a photo, file, or another item. | Incoming AirDrop | Asks you to receive an item sent from another device. | AirDrop receiving access, such as Contacts Only or Receiving Off where available. |
| An item from your own other Apple device appears without an acceptance prompt. | AirDrop between devices on the same Apple Account | Apple says these transfers are automatically accepted and saved. | Check whether both devices use the same Apple Account; this behavior is not the NameDrop proximity screen. |
For a quick decision, ask yourself two questions: Did the screen appear because two compatible devices came together, or because someone sent an item? And does it describe exchanging contact information, or accepting a file or photo? The answers point to different controls. Turning off NameDrop does not disable AirDrop receiving; changing AirDrop receiving access does not turn off the Bring Devices Together feature.
A prompt alone does not establish that someone accessed your information or that your iPhone was compromised. Identify the feature first, then change the control that governs it. If you are unsure, look at the prompt’s purpose rather than assuming every screen involving a nearby device is NameDrop.
Stop NameDrop from appearing
- Open Settings on your iPhone.
- Tap General, then AirDrop.
- Turn off Bring Devices Together.
Apple says this switch turns off NameDrop and other Bring Devices Together features. It does not turn off AirDrop receiving as a whole, so a separate incoming file request may still appear according to your receiving setting. This distinction matters if you turn the switch off and later see an AirDrop banner: that banner is governed by AirDrop’s receiving access, not the NameDrop proximity control.
If you do want to use NameDrop sometimes, the setting is a choice about whether the proximity-triggered feature is enabled, not a requirement to share every time it appears. When the NameDrop interface comes up, review the selected information and choose whether to share or receive. You can decline to complete the exchange. If you do not want the screen to appear when devices come together at all, turn off Bring Devices Together.

Cancel a NameDrop screen that is already open
Before a transfer completes, move the devices apart or lock your iPhone. Apple identifies both actions as ways to cancel. Turning off Bring Devices Together is the lasting setting change if you do not want this proximity-triggered feature to appear again.
These are useful immediate steps when the screen appears unexpectedly, such as when you bring two phones together while handling them. Moving them apart or locking the phone cancels the in-progress interaction; the setting change prevents future NameDrop appearances. If the screen is actually asking you to accept an item, use the AirDrop receiving controls instead.
Check that the devices support NameDrop
Apple’s Personal Safety guide says NameDrop requires iOS 17.1 or later on both iPhones. For an Apple Watch, it requires watchOS 10.1 or later; Apple lists Apple Watch SE (2nd generation), Apple Watch Series 7 and later, and Apple Watch Ultra models as supported. If NameDrop is missing or behaves differently, check the software versions and device pairing before troubleshooting other settings.
Compatibility is especially relevant when the screen appears on one pairing of devices but not another, or when you are trying to determine whether a screen is a NameDrop interaction. The requirement applies to both iPhones, not just the phone whose settings you are checking. For a watch pairing, check both the watchOS requirement and the supported watch models. If the relevant devices do not meet those conditions, do not assume that an absent NameDrop screen means the setting is broken.

Reduce or stop incoming AirDrop requests
If the prompt is asking you to accept an item, adjust AirDrop’s receiving access rather than Bring Devices Together. On iPhone or iPad, Apple describes changing the setting through Control Center. Choose Contacts Only to limit who can send requests, or Receiving Off if that option is available and you do not want to receive AirDrop items. Use Everyone for 10 Minutes only when you want that broader access temporarily.
These choices serve different needs. Contacts Only limits incoming requests to contacts; Receiving Off is the option for not receiving AirDrop items when it is available. Everyone for 10 Minutes is a temporary broader-access choice rather than a permanent setting. If you only want to stop an unfamiliar request, review which receiving option is active before changing NameDrop settings that do not govern the transfer.

Apple says Everyone for 10 Minutes reverts automatically after ten minutes. When you are signed in to your Apple Account, it reverts to Contacts Only; when you are not signed in, it reverts to Receiving Off. If you continue seeing requests from people you do not recognize, check that the receiving setting is not left on Everyone for 10 Minutes. The automatic return is useful, but it does not change the distinction between AirDrop and NameDrop: each still has its own control.
AirDrop receiving access is the relevant setting when a person or device is attempting to send you an item. The sender’s proximity alone is not the defining trigger in the way that it is for NameDrop. This is why identifying the screen first saves time: a proximity contact exchange points to Bring Devices Together; an item request points to the receiver’s AirDrop access.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Know what to expect from your own devices
Apple says an AirDrop transfer between devices signed in to the same Apple Account is automatically accepted and saved. That can explain why an item from your own second device does not produce the usual accept-or-decline prompt. If you did not expect the item, check which device sent it and whether both devices are signed in to the same account.
This behavior is different from NameDrop. NameDrop is about selected contact details and Contact Poster information; an AirDrop transfer is about an item such as a file or photo. If an item appears without an acceptance prompt and you own both devices, the shared Apple Account may explain the automatic acceptance. If the devices are not both yours or you cannot identify the sender, do not treat the behavior as proof of a NameDrop exchange; check the item-transfer context and receiving setting.
Current version-specific protection for noncontacts
Apple’s current AirDrop guidance describes an AirDrop code requirement for transfers from noncontacts on iOS 26.2 or later. This is version-specific; confirm the iOS version installed on your iPhone before expecting that behavior. It does not replace the NameDrop switch, which controls proximity-based contact sharing.
This code requirement is relevant only when discussing inbound AirDrop protections for noncontacts. It is not a step needed to turn off NameDrop, and it should not be assumed on an iPhone running an earlier version. Check the installed version if a transfer from a noncontact behaves differently than you expect.

Review the contact details NameDrop can share
NameDrop does not send your entire contact card. Apple says it shares your name, the phone number or email address you select, and Contact Poster information associated with your Contact Card. Apple specifically says details such as your home address and birthday are not shared through NameDrop.
That means there are two separate privacy decisions to consider. First, decide whether you want the proximity feature enabled at all by using Bring Devices Together. Second, if you use NameDrop, review which contact details are selected in its interface and what is on your My Card. Turning off the proximity feature is the direct option if your goal is to avoid NameDrop screens; editing My Card helps you control the details associated with your contact information.
- Open Contacts and select My Card.
- Tap Edit to review and change the information on your card.
- When the NameDrop interface appears, review the fields selected for sharing before choosing whether to share or receive.
Review the selected phone number or email in the NameDrop interface rather than assuming every field stored in Contacts will be sent. Apple says the shared information includes the selected number or email and Contact Poster information. The complete card is not sent, and Apple identifies home address and birthday as examples of details that NameDrop does not share.
NameDrop is enabled by default, but that does not mean the other person receives your contact details merely because devices are near each other. The NameDrop interface lets you choose whether to share or receive; you can also cancel by moving the devices apart or locking the iPhone before transfer completes. If you prefer not to see the interface when devices come together, switch off Bring Devices Together rather than relying only on the fact that a choice appears at the screen.

After confirming whether the issue is NameDrop or an item transfer, use Apple’s basic AirDrop checks. These steps address common connection or receiving-setting problems; Apple’s guidance does not identify a separate hardware repair specifically for unexpected prompts. Work through the checks in order so you do not troubleshoot AirDrop connectivity when the screen is actually NameDrop, or vice versa.
- Recheck the relevant setting. For a proximity contact screen, verify Bring Devices Together is off. For item requests, verify the AirDrop receiving access is set as intended. Confirm the label in Settings or Control Center rather than relying on memory of a previous change.
- Check Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on both devices. Apple lists both as basics to verify when AirDrop is not working. Check the sending and receiving devices; checking only the iPhone that displays the prompt may not resolve a transfer issue between devices.
- Check the recipient’s receiving setting. The receiving device must be configured to accept AirDrop from the sender under its selected access setting. If the recipient’s setting does not allow the sender, review that setting before trying the transfer again.
- Disconnect Personal Hotspot if applicable. Apple includes this among its AirDrop troubleshooting checks. If Personal Hotspot is in use during the transfer problem, disconnect it and test AirDrop again.
- Restart the device. If the prompt or transfer problem continues after the settings and connections are checked, restart and test again.
Separate a persistent prompt from a failed transfer. A NameDrop screen that still appears after the switch is off calls for checking that the screen is truly NameDrop and that Bring Devices Together is off. An AirDrop request that continues to arrive or a transfer that does not work calls for checking receiving access, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Personal Hotspot, and restarting as applicable.

If the banner concerns an item, confirm which device sent it and whether it is one of your own devices. Transfers between devices signed in to the same Apple Account may be automatically accepted and saved, so the lack of a standard accept-or-decline prompt can be expected in that situation. If you are troubleshooting a noncontact transfer on iOS 26.2 or later, account for Apple’s code requirement described in its current AirDrop guidance.
If a prompt remains after Bring Devices Together is off, make sure it is actually the NameDrop screen rather than a separate AirDrop item request. For persistent behavior not resolved by these checks, Apple Support is the appropriate non-hardware first escalation. The documented steps here do not point to a case, replacement part, or repair tool as a fix for the NameDrop trigger.

Why the distinction matters
Changing one feature’s setting will not necessarily affect the other. Use the trigger as your guide: NameDrop is about bringing compatible devices together and exchanging selected contact details; AirDrop is about sending an item to a receiving device. The former is controlled by Bring Devices Together, while the latter is governed by AirDrop receiving access.
Keep the three situations straight: an in-progress proximity contact screen can be canceled by separating the devices or locking the iPhone; a future NameDrop screen can be prevented by turning off Bring Devices Together; an incoming item request is managed through AirDrop’s receiving setting. An item from your own second device may be automatically accepted and saved when both devices are signed in to the same Apple Account. These are different behaviors, and recognizing which one you see is the most direct route to the right fix.
Do you need an accessory or repair?
No physical product is needed to change these settings or perform Apple’s listed troubleshooting steps. A phone case, privacy screen, replacement part, or repair tool does not address the documented NameDrop trigger. Start with the software setting that matches the prompt, then use Apple’s connection checks if an AirDrop transfer is not working.

Why do I still get an AirDrop prompt after turning off NameDrop?
The two controls are separate. Turning off Bring Devices Together stops the NameDrop proximity feature, but an AirDrop banner for a file, photo, or other item is controlled by AirDrop receiving access. Use Control Center to choose Contacts Only or Receiving Off where available.
Why was an AirDrop from my own iPad or iPhone accepted without asking?
Apple says an AirDrop transfer between devices signed in to the same Apple Account is automatically accepted and saved. Check whether both devices use the same account and confirm which device sent the item.
What should I check if AirDrop is not working?
Check Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on both devices, confirm the recipient’s AirDrop receiving setting allows the sender, disconnect Personal Hotspot if applicable, and restart the device. These checks are for AirDrop connectivity or receiving issues, not a substitute for the NameDrop switch.
Which iPhone and Apple Watch versions support NameDrop?
Apple says both iPhones need iOS 17.1 or later. For Apple Watch, NameDrop requires watchOS 10.1 or later and is supported on Apple Watch SE (2nd generation), Apple Watch Series 7 and later, and Apple Watch Ultra models.
Does NameDrop share my home address or birthday?
Apple says NameDrop does not share the entire contact card and specifically says home address and birthday are not shared. It shares your name, the phone number or email you select, and Contact Poster information. Review Contacts > My Card > Edit and the selected fields in the NameDrop interface.
What happens when I choose Everyone for 10 Minutes in AirDrop?
It allows broader receiving access temporarily and reverts automatically after ten minutes. When signed in to your Apple Account it reverts to Contacts Only; when not signed in it reverts to Receiving Off.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: For a contact-sharing screen triggered by nearby devices, turn off Settings > General > AirDrop > Bring Devices Together. For a file or photo request, change AirDrop receiving access through Control Center. If the sender is your own device, check whether both devices share the same Apple Account; AirDrop between them may be accepted and saved automatically.
