If Uncle Lee’s Cookbook: Five Recipes for Disaster crashes, closes immediately, or will not start on Nintendo Switch, use Nintendo’s standard downloaded-software sequence: restart the console, update the system and game, check the game for corrupt data, then delete and redownload it if necessary. If the game is on a microSD card, test a download to system memory before replacing hardware. These are platform-level remedies; no title-specific crash notice, workaround, or patch is identified in the official materials linked below.
First, confirm which game and failure you have
Nintendo’s US store lists Uncle Lee’s Cookbook: Five Recipes for Disaster as a digital Nintendo Switch release. The listing gives an October 8, 2026 release date, a 174 MB download size, DIONOUS GAMES as publisher, and Relatively Painless Games as developer. You can verify those details on the official Nintendo store listing. A small download does not make a launch failure impossible; it simply means the redownload should be relatively quick on a reliable connection.
The same listing labels the title “Supported – Game behavior is consistent with Nintendo Switch” for Switch 2. That is Nintendo’s general compatibility statement, not a guarantee that every console, storage card, account, or installation will launch correctly.

The game is single-player and supports TV, tabletop, and handheld play. Nintendo lists English and Italian subtitles, an English voice track, and German among the supported languages. Those options can help you distinguish a settings question from a failure before the title reaches its menus, but they do not identify a crash cause.

| What you see | Most useful first branch |
|---|---|
| The icon will not start, or the console returns you to HOME | Restart, update, check corrupt data, then redownload if needed. |
| The game opens and later closes | Install all system and software updates, then run the corrupt-data check; note when the closure occurs. |
| A specific error code or message appears | Search that exact wording in Nintendo Support, because some errors have their own procedure. |
| The title is stored on microSD | After the standard checks, test a fresh download in system memory. |
| You are using Switch 2 | Follow the Switch 2 crash procedure, including a system-memory redownload if the earlier checks fail. |
Run the fixes in this order
Work through the steps rather than changing several things at once. That gives each result a useful meaning and avoids buying storage or deleting software before a simpler problem is ruled out. Keep the console connected to power during a lengthy update or download, and do not remove a card while the system is accessing it.
1. Restart the Switch normally
- Press and hold the console’s POWER button for at least three seconds.
- Select Power Options.
- Choose Restart and wait for the HOME Menu to return.
- Start the game again from its icon.
A normal restart clears a temporary software state without requiring you to reinstall the title. If the console is completely unresponsive and the menu never appears, Nintendo’s general guidance says to hold POWER for 20 seconds to force it off. Release the button, wait briefly, turn the system on, and try the game once more. Use the forced shutdown only for an unresponsive console; it is not a substitute for the normal restart path.
2. Install any system update
- From HOME, open System Settings.
- Scroll to System.
- Select System Update.
- Allow the Switch to connect to the internet and install an available update.
Nintendo says the console must be online to download a system update. Keep the console powered and connected until the process completes, then restart if the system requests it. Updating first matters because Nintendo’s corrupt-data instructions assume the system software is current. The general downloaded-software procedure is documented in Nintendo’s downloaded-software troubleshooting guide.
3. Update the game itself
- Return to the HOME Menu and highlight the Uncle Lee’s Cookbook icon without opening it.
- Press the + or − button on the controller.
- Select Software Update.
- Choose Via the Internet.
Let the update check finish before launching the title. If no update is offered, that means the console did not find an available download for your installation at that moment; it does not diagnose why the game failed. If an update installs, launch the game again before moving to the next step. Nintendo can change software and support procedures, so use the on-screen labels shown by your console.
4. Check the installation for corrupt data
- Open System Settings from HOME.
- Choose Data Management.
- Select Manage Software.
- Choose Uncle Lee’s Cookbook: Five Recipes for Disaster.
- Select Check for Corrupt Data and allow the check to complete.
Nintendo specifically instructs users to update the system before running this check. The check examines the downloaded software and reports whether the console detects a problem. Follow any redownload instruction the console displays; if it reports no corruption but the title still fails, continue to the redownload step rather than treating a clean result as proof that the game is healthy. The exact menu path is also shown in Nintendo’s corrupt-data instructions.
5. Delete and redownload the digital game
When restarting, updating, and checking the data do not solve the problem, Nintendo’s launch-error guidance recommends redownloading the software. Because this edition is digital and listed at 174 MB, the console will need to download the complete installation again.

- EASY CONTENT MANAGEMENT. Easily back up, organize, and transfer your photos and videos with the SANDISK Memory Zone desktop or Android mobile app[5].
- Highlight the game on HOME and press + or −.
- Use the software-management option that removes the downloaded software from the console. Read the confirmation screen carefully before accepting it.
- Return to HOME and redownload the title from the Nintendo eShop using the Nintendo Account that acquired it.
- Wait for the download and installation to finish, then launch the game from HOME.
The official guidance supports redownloading the software; it does not establish that a redownload repairs or restores game-specific save data. Do not promise yourself that deleting the installation will fix a save, and do not erase separate save data as a troubleshooting shortcut. If the console presents a choice involving save data, stop and read that screen before confirming.

Nintendo’s launch-error procedure, including the storage test described next, is available at Unable to start software on Nintendo Switch.
6. Test system memory when microSD storage may be involved
Use this branch when the game is installed on a microSD card, when other software on that card is also failing, or when the standard steps did not resolve the launch error. It is a diagnostic comparison, not a reason to purchase a larger card: the listed game is only 174 MB.
- Power the console off before removing the microSD card. If you use the forced shutdown described earlier, wait until the system is fully off.
- Remove the microSD card according to the console model’s slot instructions.
- Turn the Switch on and download Uncle Lee’s Cookbook: Five Recipes for Disaster directly to system memory.
- Launch the system-memory installation.
If the game works from system memory, the card, its contents, or the card’s contact with the console becomes the leading storage-related suspect. Nintendo lists replacing the microSD card as an option if the problem persists, but test the system-memory installation first. If the title still fails from system memory, the card is less likely to be the sole cause and you should continue with error-specific support or escalation. Nintendo’s launch-error page gives the official microSD and system-memory branch.
How to interpret the storage test
The comparison is useful only if you change one variable: the installation location. First complete the normal update and corruption checks, then run the same title from system memory without the microSD card present. A successful launch in that state does not prove the game itself is defective; it shows that the original storage path deserves attention. Conversely, failure in both locations makes a card-only explanation less convincing.
Do not remove the card while the console is running or while software is downloading. Power down first, and keep track of which installation you are launching from the HOME Menu. If the card test changes the result, tell Nintendo Support the exact sequence, including whether other downloaded games are affected. Nintendo’s documented option is to try replacing the card if the problem continues; it is not an instruction to buy storage before performing the system-memory comparison.

- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
What to do on Switch 2
Switch 2 owners may see the message "There was a problem, and the software needed to close." Nintendo’s general Switch 2 procedure is the same progression: restart, install current system and game updates, check for corrupt data, and redownload to system memory if necessary. Follow those steps even though the store listing marks this title as supported on Switch 2; compatibility labeling does not identify a title-specific defect or guarantee a particular installation will launch.
If the message appears only after a particular action—such as loading a stage, changing a language, or switching between handheld and TV play—record that trigger. The official materials reviewed do not associate any such action with a known defect in this game. Nintendo’s general instructions for software that closes because an error occurred are at Nintendo Support’s Switch 2 crash page.
Use the exact error message to choose the next step
Do not paraphrase an error code when searching for help. Nintendo notes that specific errors can have separate support articles. Two examples of wording you might encounter are:
- "Unable to start software. Return to the HOME Menu and try again." This is an example of a Nintendo Switch launch message; it is not evidence that every copy of this game displays it.
- "There was a problem, and the software needed to close." This is an example associated with Switch 2’s general crash guidance.
Write down the complete text, any numeric code, and whether the failure happens before the title screen, while loading, or during play. Then search Nintendo Support for that exact wording and follow the matching article. If Nintendo’s article repeats steps you already completed, proceed to its next branch rather than running the same action indefinitely.
Separate a launch failure from an in-game crash
The icon fails immediately
Prioritize the restart, system update, game update, corrupt-data check, and redownload sequence. If the software is on microSD, perform the system-memory test after those checks. This pattern points to installation, storage, account, or system-level troubleshooting; the available official material does not provide a special recipe for this title.
The game starts, then closes during play
Install updates and run the corrupt-data check even if the game reaches its opening screen. Note the exact activity and timing of the closure, whether it happens in handheld or TV mode, and whether it is repeatable. Those observations help Nintendo Support distinguish a general console problem from a reproducible software event, but they are not a diagnosis on their own.

Only one mode appears affected
The store listing confirms support for TV, tabletop, and handheld play, but it does not document a mode-specific workaround. Test the same save or menu path in another supported mode after completing the standard update and data checks. Report the mode difference to Nintendo rather than assuming that changing modes permanently fixes the installation.
Common pitfalls to avoid
- Do not jump straight to a new microSD card. Nintendo’s sequence uses system memory as the comparison first, and the game’s listed size is only 174 MB.
- Do not confuse a software removal with save-data deletion. Read every confirmation screen and leave separate save data untouched unless Nintendo Support specifically directs otherwise.
- Do not treat “no update available” as a crash diagnosis. It only means the console found no update for that installation at that time.
- Do not repeat the same restart endlessly. Once restart, updates, and the data check have been completed, move to the documented redownload or storage branch.
- Do not assume Switch 2 support guarantees a flawless launch. “Supported” describes expected compatibility, not the condition of your particular download.
- Do not report an example error as if it were confirmed for this game. Copy the wording actually displayed by your console.
When to contact Nintendo Support
Escalate after the prescribed steps fail, especially when the game will not launch from system memory or repeatedly closes with the same code. Nintendo’s launch-error guidance directs users to contact support when its procedure does not resolve the issue. Have the following information ready:
- The exact title and the fact that it is the digital Nintendo Switch edition.
- Your console model: Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, or Switch 2.
- The complete error wording and numeric code, copied exactly.
- Whether the software was installed on microSD or system memory.
- Which steps you completed: restart, system update, game update, corrupt-data check, redownload, and storage test.
- Whether the failure occurs at launch, during a particular loading screen, or during a repeatable action.
- Whether other downloaded games show similar behavior.
This information lets support start at the unresolved branch instead of asking you to repeat every menu path. If Nintendo or the developer later publishes a title-specific notice or patch, compare its version requirements with your installed software before trying unrelated workarounds.
What the official guidance does—and does not—establish
The official store page identifies the release, its 174 MB size, its publisher and developer, and its Switch 2 compatibility label. Nintendo’s support pages provide the restart, update, corrupt-data, redownload, and microSD/system-memory procedures. The official materials available for this guide do not identify a confirmed crash notice, title-specific workaround, or patch that explains launch failures in Uncle Lee’s Cookbook: Five Recipes for Disaster. That absence is not proof that no player has experienced a problem; it means the safest remedy is Nintendo’s documented platform sequence rather than an unverified game-specific claim.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a confirmed Uncle Lee’s Cookbook crash patch for Switch?
No title-specific crash notice, workaround, or patch is identified in the official Nintendo materials used here. Install any update offered by the console, then follow Nintendo’s restart, corrupt-data, redownload, and storage checks.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWill deleting the game erase my save?
The documented advice supports removing and redownloading the software, but it does not establish what happens to this game’s save data. Do not choose a separate save-data deletion option, and read every confirmation screen carefully.

Should I buy a new microSD card?
Not as the first step. Nintendo recommends testing the game in system memory when the card may be involved. Replacing the card is a later option if the problem persists.
Does Switch 2 compatibility mean the game cannot crash?
No. Nintendo lists the title as “Supported – Game behavior is consistent with Nintendo Switch,” which is a compatibility statement, not a guarantee that every installation will launch.
What should I do if I see “Unable to start software”?
Copy the complete message and any code, then search that exact wording in Nintendo Support. Also complete the general sequence: restart, update the system and game, check for corrupt data, and redownload if needed.

What if the game works in handheld mode but not TV mode?
The listing supports TV, tabletop, and handheld play but provides no mode-specific workaround. Complete the standard checks, test the same action in another mode, and report the difference to Nintendo Support.
How large is the digital download?
Nintendo’s US listing gives the download size as 174 MB. That size does not rule out a launch problem, but it means a complete redownload should be relatively small.
The Bottom Line
Restart the Switch, update the console and game, check for corrupt data, and redownload the 174 MB digital title if necessary. If it is on microSD, test a fresh system-memory installation before replacing the card. Save the exact error wording and contact Nintendo Support if the game still crashes or will not launch.
