If an Ultima game will not start, shows a black or cropped screen, flickers, or runs at the wrong speed, first identify the exact title, edition, Windows version, and symptom. Ultima is a series with different runtimes and packaging, so a DOSBox display change that helps one release may be irrelevant to another. For a DOSBox-based edition, use its bundled Graphics Mode Setup utility before changing Windows system settings; for other older releases, follow Microsoft’s compatibility troubleshooting path.
Start by identifying the exact Ultima release
“Ultima” does not identify one executable or one compatibility layer. The franchise includes numbered games, Underworld entries, Ultima Online, and editions that bundle different patches or emulators. EA’s catalog distinguishes titles such as Ultima VII, Ultima VIII Gold Edition, Ultima IX: Ascension, Ultima Online, Underworld 1, Underworld 2, and earlier numbered releases. Treating them as interchangeable can lead you to edit the wrong configuration file or install an unnecessary patch.
Before trying a fix, write down these details:
- Exact title: for example, Ultima VII, Ultima VIII Gold Edition, Ultima IX: Ascension, or an Underworld game.
- Edition and source: a GOG release, an EA release, an original disc, or another package.
- Runtime and modifications: whether the package uses DOSBox, an alternate engine, a fan patch, or a manually replaced executable.
- Windows version and build: Windows 10 or Windows 11, plus the installed build if you know it.
- Observable symptom: no launch, an error message, a black screen, flicker, a cropped image, an unwanted fullscreen mode, or game speed that is too fast or too slow.
Keep the error text exactly as shown. “The program cannot start,” a window that closes immediately, and a game that launches with a black display point to different troubleshooting branches. Also note whether the problem began after a Windows update, graphics-driver change, patch, or mod installation. That timeline does not identify the cause by itself, but it helps you avoid undoing a setting that was working.
Do not assume that the newest-looking launcher means the game has a modern native Windows runtime. A storefront may wrap a DOS program in DOSBox, while a disc release or fan-modified copy may use another arrangement. Confirm the package from its launcher, Start Menu entries, documentation, or installation folder before selecting instructions.

This order is deliberately conservative. A setting supplied with the game is easy to reverse and less likely to affect unrelated programs. A Windows-wide change, replacement executable, or alternate engine can make diagnosis harder if you have not established which release you own.
Confirm whether the package uses DOSBox
Look for an explicit DOSBox label in the launcher or documentation rather than inferring it from the game’s age. In a GOG Galaxy installation, the presence of a Graphics Mode Setup entry under Customize and Additional Executables is a useful indication that the release includes a packaged DOSBox configuration path. An offline installer may place the same utility in the game’s Windows Start Menu program folder under Tools.
If neither location exists, do not substitute instructions from a different Ultima edition. The absence of the utility does not prove that the game is native Windows software; it only means that this particular package does not expose the same setup route. Check the edition’s own support page or publisher information, then use the general Windows steps when appropriate.

Fix a DOSBox-based Ultima release
Many packaged DOS games include a configuration tool so you do not have to edit text files by hand. GOG identifies its Ultima VII: The Complete Edition as powered by DOSBox, making this route especially relevant to that named edition. It still does not prove that every Ultima VII build, mod, or installation uses the same settings.
Open Graphics Mode Setup from a GOG Galaxy installation
- Open GOG Galaxy and select the installed Ultima game.
- Open Customize.
- Select Additional Executables.
- Choose Graphics Mode Setup.
- Apply one change at a time, launch the game, and record whether the symptom changes.
Open the utility from an offline installer
- Open the game’s Windows Start Menu program folder.
- Open the Tools folder.
- Run Graphics Mode Setup.
- Change the display options described below, save them, and test the game.
Choose a safer display configuration
GOG’s general DOSBox support directions recommend these starting values for the covered DOSBox scenario:
- Graphics mode: OpenGL.
- Fullscreen: leave it unchecked so the game opens in a window.
- Windowed resolution: use a size close to your monitor’s resolution. GOG gives 1280×720 as an example, not a universal requirement.
Start with windowed mode because it makes failures easier to observe and avoids a mode switch that can leave a display blank. If the window is too small, increase the resolution in a later test. If the picture is cropped, choose a window size that fits the display rather than forcing a larger value. If OpenGL is unavailable or behaves worse on a particular installation, return to the utility and test the other mode supplied by that release instead of changing unrelated Windows graphics settings.
Resolution is a diagnostic variable, not a promise of a particular aspect ratio. A 1280×720 window may fit one monitor comfortably while being inconvenient on another. GOG’s wording is to use a resolution close to the display’s resolution when appropriate, so compare the actual visible game window with the physical screen and adjust gradually. Do not keep increasing the value after the window has already become cropped.

What to do after each change
- Close the game completely before changing another option.
- Test the same save or opening scene so the comparison is meaningful.
- Record the previous setting before applying a new one.
- If the result is worse, restore the last working values rather than stacking several untracked changes.
A bundled utility is preferable to downloading an unverified replacement executable: it is reversible, tied to the package you installed, and less likely to mix files from different Ultima releases. If the utility gives you a choice of display modes, change only that setting first. Once the game launches reliably, address window size or fullscreen behavior in a separate test.
When an Ultima game shows a black screen, flickers, or is cropped
Black screen after launch
First determine whether the process is still running. If the game window appears but the image is black, return to Graphics Mode Setup when the release uses DOSBox. Switch to windowed mode and test OpenGL, then try a window resolution appropriate to the monitor. A black screen caused by an unsuitable display mode is different from a program that exits immediately; do not apply speed settings to a display-mode failure.
If the package is not DOSBox-based, continue with the Windows compatibility route below. Note the exact point of failure: immediately after starting, after an introductory video, or when loading a save. That detail helps distinguish a rendering problem from a missing or damaged game file. If the window never appears, record that separately from a window that appears and stays black.
Flicker or an unresponsive window
Microsoft says older applications can become incompatible with newer Windows versions because of changes to the operating system’s architecture, security features, or system requirements. Its older-app guidance recommends checking the publisher for an updated version, running Program Compatibility Troubleshooter, and updating device drivers. Use those steps for a non-DOSBox release or when the packaged display utility does not resolve the behavior.
Run one compatibility test at a time and write down the result. If the troubleshooter changes the symptom from flicker to a stable but unusable window, that is still useful information: it shows that the Windows compatibility setting affected the launch path, even though another setting or an edition-specific update may be needed.
Cropped, stretched, or very small image
Use the release’s windowed display settings first. A window resolution such as 1280×720 may be a useful starting point, but GOG’s guidance also says to select a resolution closer to the actual display. The correct value depends on the monitor, scaling, and package. Do not assume that a modern widescreen resolution will preserve the original game’s aspect ratio; test a setting that keeps all of the game window visible.
Change the window size before changing the runtime or replacing files. If a smaller window displays the entire image, the symptom is likely tied to the selected display mode or size rather than to the game’s launch files. Keep the successful values recorded so you can restore them after testing another option.

Use Windows compatibility tools for older or non-DOSBox releases
Microsoft’s support guidance applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11. Follow the path displayed for your installed version because labels and locations can differ between Windows releases.
- Check for a publisher update. Look at the publisher or storefront that supplied the game for a current executable, patch, or compatibility note. Match the update to the exact title and edition.
- Run Program Compatibility Troubleshooter. Open Windows Settings or the system troubleshooting area, choose the older-app compatibility troubleshooter, select the affected game, and let Windows test recommended settings. The exact menu path can differ between Windows 10 and Windows 11, so use the path shown in Microsoft’s current support page for your OS.
- Test the recommendation. Launch the game after the troubleshooter applies a setting. If the symptom remains, note whether the result changed before trying another option.
- Update device drivers. Install current drivers for the graphics hardware through the manufacturer or your PC maker’s supported update channel. Restart Windows and test again.
These steps address general older-application compatibility. They do not convert a native Windows release into DOSBox, repair a damaged installation, or guarantee that an unofficial mod will work. If Windows offers more than one compatibility recommendation, test the game after each change rather than accepting every option at once.
Microsoft’s explanation is relevant when a previously working disc or download stops behaving after a Windows change: “Apps can become incompatible with new Windows versions due to changes in the OS’s architecture, security features, or system requirements.” That is a reason to use the compatibility route, not proof that a particular Ultima executable is defective.
Fix an Ultima game that runs too fast or too slowly
Only use DOSBox speed controls after confirming that the edition actually runs under DOSBox. GOG’s separate DOSBox performance guidance advises experimenting with DOSBox speed. Change the speed gradually, test the same in-game action, and keep a record of the setting that behaves normally.
- If the game is too fast everywhere, reduce the DOSBox emulation speed in the supported configuration.
- If it is too slow everywhere, increase the speed in small steps.
- If only one scene is slow, check whether the problem is a display mode, video effect, or damaged game data before assuming the global speed is wrong.
- If the release is native Windows software, do not apply DOSBox controls; use its own options and the Windows compatibility route instead.
Speed adjustment is not a remedy for a black screen, a cropped window, or a game that never launches. Keep those symptoms on their respective branches. If changing speed makes the game responsive but leaves the display wrong, restore the prior speed and return to Graphics Mode Setup; do not continue tuning timing for a rendering problem.

The comparison is about scope and reversibility. Prefer the narrowest change that tests the likely cause: the game’s own display utility for a DOSBox display symptom, Windows’ older-app route for a general compatibility symptom, and a same-edition reinstall only after you have preserved saves and recorded custom files.
What the Ultima VII Complete Edition evidence does—and does not—show
GOG’s listing describes Ultima VII: The Complete Edition as DOSBox-powered. Its changelog dated November 13, 2024 says “Validated stability” and “Verified compatibility with Windows 10 and 11.” That makes the edition a useful reference when you are deciding whether your installed package is the same release.

Those statements are edition-specific. They do not establish that Ultima VIII, Ultima IX, Underworld, Ultima Online, an original disc, a fan patch, or a modified local installation will have identical compatibility. They also do not prove that a particular Windows build, graphics driver, monitor, or mod configuration will launch without adjustment.
Use the changelog as identification evidence, not as a guarantee. If your copy is a different storefront build or has alternate files, follow the troubleshooting path for that package and report the difference when asking for help.

Before reinstalling or changing game files
Reinstallation can remove local configuration changes without fixing the underlying display or compatibility issue. Use this order:
- Capture the exact error or symptom and identify the title, edition, source, and Windows version.
- Back up save files and note any custom patches or alternate engines.
- Use the packaged Graphics Mode Setup utility when the release is DOSBox-based.
- Apply one Windows compatibility change at a time if the DOSBox route does not apply.
- Only then consider reinstalling the same edition, and avoid copying executables or configuration files from a different Ultima release.
If a reinstall is necessary, remove only the game installation after preserving saves and documenting custom files. A clean reinstall of the same package is more informative than replacing it immediately with an unrelated engine. If the clean copy shows the same symptom, you have ruled out one class of installation problem without mixing releases.

- Assuming every Ultima game uses DOSBox. The series contains different runtimes and editions.
- Applying a fix for Ultima VII to Ultima VIII or Underworld. Similar names do not mean identical launchers or configuration files.
- Changing several settings at once. You then cannot tell which change helped or caused the failure.
- Forcing fullscreen first. Windowed mode is a safer diagnostic baseline for display problems.
- Using speed controls for a display failure. Emulation timing does not repair a black or cropped image.
- Installing a third-party patch before identifying the edition. A patch can overwrite files or create a second compatibility problem.
- Assuming a verified edition guarantees every setup. A storefront’s Windows 10/11 statement is not a guarantee for other releases, mods, drivers, or hardware.
- Buying a physical accessory as a first fix. The supported remedies here are software configuration and Windows troubleshooting; no physical product is established as the cause or solution.
- Deleting configuration files immediately. That removes evidence and can make it harder to return to a known working setting.
- Copying a configuration from another Ultima game. Even closely related releases can package different runtimes and launchers.
A compact checklist for asking for help
If the problem remains, provide this information in one report:
- Exact Ultima title and edition.
- Storefront, disc, or other source.
- Windows version and build.
- Whether the launcher identifies DOSBox.
- Whether the game launches at all.
- Exact error text, if any.
- Whether the symptom is a black screen, flicker, cropping, fullscreen failure, or incorrect speed.
- Any installed patch, mod, or alternate engine.
- Which display mode and resolution you tested, and what changed.
With those details, a helper can select an edition-specific path instead of guessing from the word “Ultima” alone. Include the last setting that worked, if any, and identify whether the problem affects a new game, a saved game, or both. That keeps the next test focused and prevents unrelated fixes from being applied.

How do I open Graphics Mode Setup in a GOG DOSBox release?
In GOG Galaxy, select the game, open Customize, choose Additional Executables, and select Graphics Mode Setup. With an offline installer, look in the game’s Start Menu folder, then Tools, for Graphics Mode Setup.
