When Ubuntu installs successfully but Wi‑Fi, the display, or startup fails, do not begin by reinstalling random drivers or running a GRUB command copied for another computer. First identify the failure, record your Ubuntu release, kernel, hardware model, firmware mode, and Secure Boot state, then use the least destructive fix for that branch.
This guide separates a disabled wireless radio from an unrecognized adapter, a graphics-package problem from a display configuration problem, and a missing GRUB menu from a deeper boot failure. It also explains when a live USB, Ethernet cable, or Boot-Repair session is safer than changing the installed system.
Start with a low-risk diagnosis
Write down these details before changing drivers, partitions, or firmware settings:
- Ubuntu release and desktop edition.
- Kernel version, which you can record with
uname -r. - Computer make and model.
- Wireless adapter make, model, revision, and chipset, if available.
- GPU vendor and model.
- Whether the machine uses UEFI or legacy BIOS mode.
- Whether Secure Boot is enabled.
- What changed immediately before the failure: an update, kernel change, driver installation, release upgrade, disk change, or suspend/resume.
Keep a phone or another computer available for documentation, and back up important files before bootloader or partition work. A problem that looks like a driver failure may instead be a hardware switch, firmware setting, router problem, or boot-mode mismatch.

Classify the symptom before selecting a remedy
| What you see | First question | Safest first action |
|---|---|---|
| No Wi‑Fi option or wireless interface | Is the radio disabled, or is the adapter not detected? | Check Wi‑Fi, airplane mode, physical switches, then run nmcli device. |
| Wi‑Fi interface appears but will not join | Is this an authentication or signal problem? | Test the network separately; do not replace a driver until the adapter is identified. |
| Interface says connected but websites do not load | Can the computer reach the router and internet? | Investigate the router or ISP before changing Ubuntu drivers. |
| Black screen, wrong resolution, flicker, or missing external monitor | Which GPU and driver are active, and what changed? | Record GPU, Ubuntu release, kernel, and Secure Boot state. |
| GRUB prompt, blank startup screen, direct boot to another OS, or no boot | Did a disk, operating-system, firmware-mode, kernel, or partition change precede it? | Use a live USB for diagnosis and keep manual GRUB repair as a last resort. |
Prepare a recovery path before making changes
Use a live Ubuntu USB when the installed system is inaccessible
Ubuntu’s live preview starts a temporary session from a bootable USB without changing the installed system. It is useful for checking whether the wireless adapter, display, disks, and files are visible, and it gives you a working environment when the installed copy will not boot. Create the USB on another computer if necessary, boot it from the firmware’s boot menu, and choose the option to try Ubuntu rather than install it.
A live preview is not a complete driver test. Ubuntu notes that proprietary drivers such as NVIDIA’s are absent from the preview, so a display that works in the live session does not prove that the installed NVIDIA driver is correct. Treat the session as a hardware-access and recovery tool, not as proof that every installed driver will work.
Keep Ethernet available if possible
An Ethernet cable can provide a temporary update path while wireless is unavailable. Ubuntu specifically suggests wired networking when Wi‑Fi disappears after suspend and you need to update the system. You may not need to buy anything if the computer already has a wired port, dock, or adapter.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFix Ubuntu Wi‑Fi that is missing or cannot connect
1. Check switches and radio state
- Open the desktop network controls and verify that Wi‑Fi is switched on.
- Turn airplane mode off.
- Check the computer’s physical wireless key, slider, or function-key combination.
- Restart once if the radio was just toggled or the system resumed from sleep.
- Run
nmcli deviceand note whether a wireless interface is shown and what state it reports.
These checks distinguish a disabled radio from a missing device. Do them before installing a package: a driver cannot enable a radio that firmware or a physical switch has disabled.

2. Interpret the wireless interface result
Result from nmcli device |
What it suggests | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| A wireless interface is shown and connected | Ubuntu has created a network connection; the remaining failure may be the router, DNS, captive portal, or ISP. | Test another device on the same network and check the router before touching drivers. |
| A wireless interface is shown but disconnected | The adapter is recognized, but it is not associated with an access point. | Check the network name, password, signal, airplane mode, and whether the access point works for another device. |
| No wireless interface is shown | The adapter may be disabled, unrecognized, unsupported, or missing firmware; this output alone cannot identify which. | Inspect hardware with lshw -C network and collect the adapter’s exact identity. |
3. Confirm that Ubuntu can see the adapter
Run lshw -C network from a terminal. Record the wireless device’s vendor, product name, revision, and any chipset or driver/firmware fields it reports. Ubuntu’s guidance emphasizes the particular adapter rather than a generic “Wi‑Fi driver”: two laptops sold in the same year can require different support.
If the wireless device does not appear, do not assume that installing a random driver will solve it. It could be disabled in firmware, disconnected internally, unsupported by that release, or affected by a driver or firmware problem. The available output is needed to distinguish those cases.
4. Check for a radio block, with release-appropriate caution
The Ubuntu Community Help Wiki suggests rfkill list as a diagnostic clue. A hard block can point to a physical switch or a BIOS/firmware setting; a software block may clear when airplane mode is disabled or the radio is toggled. The wiki is community-maintained and some details can age, so verify the exact procedure for your Ubuntu release before changing firmware settings.

5. Handle Wi‑Fi loss after suspend
If Wi‑Fi worked before sleep and disappears after waking, Ubuntu identifies driver power-saving support as one possible cause. Try these reversible actions in order:

- Toggle Wi‑Fi off and on.
- Toggle airplane mode on, wait briefly, and turn it off again.
- Restart Ubuntu.
- Use Ethernet temporarily and install the normal system updates.
Do not conclude that the adapter is permanently unsupported solely because it failed once after resume. Note whether a restart restores it; that timing is useful when you seek a release-specific driver or firmware fix.
6. Decide whether the problem is networking rather than drivers
When nmcli device reports a connected wireless interface but internet access is absent, test the router and ISP first. Check whether another device can browse, whether the access point requires a sign-in page, and whether moving closer changes the result. Replacing Ubuntu’s driver cannot repair an outage outside the computer.
Fix Ubuntu graphics and display behavior
Identify the GPU and the change that preceded the failure
Record the exact GPU model, Ubuntu release, kernel, and current Secure Boot state. Also write down whether the problem began after a system update, kernel update, driver installation, or release upgrade. “Graphics problem” can mean a black screen, incorrect resolution, flicker, a missing external display, or a session that fails to start; the correct remedy depends on that distinction.
NVIDIA on Ubuntu Desktop: use Ubuntu’s packages
For an NVIDIA GPU on Ubuntu Desktop, Ubuntu recommends its own package routes rather than a downloaded installer. The documentation states: “We recommend installing the drivers provided by Ubuntu packages rather than downloading drivers from NVIDIA.”

Ubuntu distinguishes production, new-feature, and long-term-support branches, but package availability and hardware support vary by release. Follow the recommendation shown for your installation instead of treating one branch as universally correct.
Understand Secure Boot implications
Ubuntu’s NVIDIA documentation warns: “NVIDIA drivers installed from sources outside of those listed in this guide might potentially overwrite those provided by Ubuntu and might break Secure Boot.” Ubuntu’s tools default to pre-built signed drivers intended to work with Secure Boot. If you used an external installer, document that fact before switching back; overlapping package files can leave a system in a mixed state.
AMD, Intel, and unresolved display failures
There is no single current rollback procedure that applies to every AMD, Intel, and NVIDIA configuration. The Community Help Wiki contains old fglrx-era AMD removal commands; those historical commands should not be copied as generic repair steps for a modern installation. Get the exact GPU, Ubuntu version, kernel, Secure Boot state, and installed driver before following vendor- or release-specific instructions.

Repair startup failures and a missing GRUB menu
Classify what happens at power-on
| Observed behavior | Information to record |
|---|---|
| GRUB prompt or an explicit GRUB error | The exact text, whether the disk is listed, and whether UEFI or legacy BIOS mode is active. |
| Blank screen before any menu | Whether firmware setup opens, whether the disk appears there, and whether the failure followed a graphics or kernel update. |
| Computer boots directly into another operating system | Whether another OS was installed or updated, and whether the firmware boot order changed. |
| Ubuntu kernel menu appears but a selected entry fails | The kernel version, error message, encryption or RAID arrangement, and the last successful entry. |
| No boot after a disk or partition operation | Which disk and partitions changed, and whether a backup exists. |
Ubuntu Community Help Wiki lists changed disks, installation of another operating system, GRUB not appearing, and a broken GRUB upgrade among common repair scenarios. Those clues help select a recovery route; they do not identify a universal command.
Use a live USB and Boot-Repair for common cases
- Boot the Ubuntu live USB and choose the live-session option.
- Confirm that the internal disk and Ubuntu partition are visible before attempting repair.
- Start Boot-Repair from the live session or from another working Ubuntu installation, following the version-appropriate documentation.
- Use its recommended repair flow for a common configuration, and read the diagnostic summary before accepting changes.
- If it offers to collect or share diagnostic information, review the prompt and its privacy implications before submitting logs.
- Restart, remove the USB when prompted, and check whether the expected Ubuntu and other operating-system entries appear.
Boot-Repair can collect useful diagnostics, but its community documentation is not a guarantee for every UEFI, encrypted, RAID, or release configuration. Back up data and prefer device-specific instructions when those features are present.
Why manual GRUB commands are a last resort
Do not run a command that assumes a disk name, partition, UEFI/BIOS mode, or chroot layout until those facts have been verified. A wrong target can make the machine less bootable.
The Ubuntu GRUB installation wiki states that purging and reinstalling GRUB removes its packages and settings and temporarily leaves the computer without a bootloader. That is a recovery operation, not a harmless reset. If you must take it, first identify the correct EFI system partition or BIOS disk, mount the installed system correctly, preserve encryption and RAID details, and ensure the live session has a reliable power and network path. Stop and obtain release-specific help if any prerequisite is uncertain.
Choose the least risky route
| Situation | Preferred route | Risk and prerequisite |
|---|---|---|
| Wi‑Fi radio switched off or airplane mode enabled | Re-enable the radio and retest. | Highly reversible; no package change. |
| Wi‑Fi interface connected but no internet | Check router, ISP, captive portal, and another device. | A driver change is unlikely to help. |
| Wireless adapter absent from network output | Collect lshw -C network, model, revision, and chipset details; then consult release-specific support. |
Do not guess a package without hardware identity. |
| Wi‑Fi disappears after suspend | Cycle Wi‑Fi or airplane mode, restart, then update over Ethernet. | Reversible; record whether restart restores it. |
| NVIDIA display issue on Ubuntu Desktop | Use Additional Drivers or ubuntu-drivers list, select the offered tested proprietary package, update, reboot. |
Check Secure Boot; avoid external installers that can overwrite Ubuntu packages. |
| Ubuntu will not boot but a live USB works | Use the live session for backups and diagnostics, then consider Boot-Repair’s recommended flow. | Backups and privacy review are important; encrypted or RAID systems need extra care. |
| Manual GRUB reinstall | Only after verifying disk, partition, firmware mode, and chroot prerequisites. | Can remove packages/settings and temporarily leave the computer without a bootloader. |
What to collect before asking for help
A concise evidence bundle prevents generic advice from sending you down the wrong branch. Include:
- Ubuntu release and desktop edition.
- Kernel version.
- Computer model.
- Wireless adapter model, revision, and chipset, plus the output of
nmcli deviceand relevant lines fromlshw -C network. - GPU model, current driver route, and whether Secure Boot is enabled.
- Exact boot message or a description of whether the system reaches firmware, GRUB, the kernel menu, or the desktop.
- What changed immediately beforehand.
- Whether Ethernet, a live USB, encryption, RAID, or another operating system is involved.
With those facts, a helper can distinguish a radio block from missing firmware, an Ubuntu package issue from an external NVIDIA installer, and a GRUB configuration problem from a disk or firmware failure. Without them, a command that is safe on one release or machine can be inappropriate on another.
