Start by updating Truckful itself. MythicOwl’s launch patches 1.0.1 and 1.0.2 specifically addressed repeated input, PlayStation controller support, softlocks, and keyboard remapping. Then update SteamOS, restart the Deck, temporarily disable third-party Desktop Mode applications, and lower graphics settings if the problem is broader instability or stutter. Treat Proton as a controlled compatibility test rather than an automatic fix: Truckful is listed with SteamOS and Linux support, and no title-specific Proton version is established.
First, identify which problem you actually have
“Truckful crashes on Steam Deck” can describe several unrelated failures. The quickest fix depends on whether the game is receiving an input twice, has trapped the character in a softlock, is rendering unevenly, or is failing at the SteamOS application level.
- Repeated action or cargo rotation: one button press rotates cargo twice, installs a skill twice, or triggers another action repeatedly. MythicOwl identified this as a double-input bug in patch 1.0.1.
- Controller not detected or a PlayStation pad not responding: the game may be running an older build, or the particular controller and connection mode may not be covered by the published support statement.
- Softlock: the game is still running, but you cannot progress or leave a location. Patch 1.0.2 added an emergency escape route in the Hotel Hub and a teleport option in its cheat menu.
- Stutter: the game runs but frame delivery is uneven, especially during busy scenes. Graphics settings and SteamOS-level factors are the first variables to test.
- Crash or hard freeze: Truckful closes, returns to the Steam library, or stops responding. Start with Valve’s general Deck stability steps before changing compatibility settings.
Keep a short record of the symptom, the exact action that triggers it, whether it happens after a fresh launch, and whether it survives a restart. That separates a reproducible game defect from a one-time interruption.

Truckful launched on Steam and Google Play on October 9, 2026. Its early launch notes are unusually relevant to Deck troubleshooting, so do not begin by forcing Proton or buying another controller.

Install the update and restart
- Open Steam on the Deck and select Truckful in your library.
- Let any pending download finish. If Steam shows an update in the game’s download queue, wait for it to complete before launching.
- Exit Truckful completely rather than leaving it suspended. From the Steam menu, choose the option to exit the game, then launch it again.
- Reproduce the original action once. For example, rotate the same cargo item or reconnect the same controller, rather than changing several variables at once.
If the symptom remains, open the game’s Steam update history and compare the installed build with the launch notes. Those notes are from the early release period; a newer build may supersede their procedures or add another fix.
Fix cargo rotating twice or other repeated inputs
A launch-day Steam review reported cargo rotating at least twice per input. That report is anecdotal, but it matches the double-input defect MythicOwl later named in patch 1.0.1. It should not be treated as proof that a Deck button, joystick, or trigger is physically defective.
What to do
- Confirm that Truckful is on patch 1.0.1 or newer.
- Restart the game after the update; do not test only from a suspended session.
- Try the same cargo-rotation or skill-installation action once. Avoid rapidly pressing the button while diagnosing it, because rapid manual presses can look like duplicate input.
- If the action still repeats, test another in-game action with the same Deck control. Record whether only Truckful repeats the input or whether the control behaves incorrectly elsewhere on SteamOS.
If other games and the Deck interface respond normally, the evidence points more strongly to a Truckful input or mapping problem than to a general hardware fault. Include that distinction in a support report.
Fix a controller that is not detected
The Steam store description recommends a controller because Truckful combines truck handling with physics-based cargo loading. That recommendation is context, not a promise that every controller works identically.
PlayStation controllers
Patch 1.0.1 explicitly added PlayStation controller support. Install that patch before testing a PlayStation pad, then restart Truckful and reconnect the controller. The published note does not enumerate every PlayStation model, wired or wireless connection mode, or third-party variation, so universal compatibility cannot be promised.

Separate a game-side issue from a Deck-side issue
- Check whether the controller is visible and responsive in the Steam Deck interface.
- Launch Truckful after the controller is connected, then test a menu action and a driving or cargo action.
- Try the same controller in another game. If it fails there too, investigate the Deck connection or controller before blaming Truckful.
- If it works elsewhere but not in Truckful, record the controller model, wired or wireless connection, and the exact screen where input stops.
The launch notes establish a game-side support change, but they do not establish that purchasing a replacement controller, dock, or adapter will solve an individual input defect.
Recover from a Truckful softlock
Patch 1.0.1 listed softlocks as a known issue. Patch 1.0.2 said it fixed the most important softlock problem by adding an emergency escape route to the Hotel Hub. It also added a teleport option in a cheat menu for players who are stuck.

Use the normal escape route first
- Update to 1.0.2 or later and restart the game.
- If you are trapped in the Hotel Hub, look for the emergency escape route added by the patch.
- Use it only when the normal route is unavailable. Then save or reach the next stable point if the game allows it.
Use the teleport option only as an unstuck measure
The 1.0.2 notes describe activating the cheat menu by pressing X or clicking the green pine in the journal ten times. From that menu, the teleport option can move a stuck player. Menu activation details can change in later builds, so check the current in-game notes if ten presses or the green pine no longer opens it.
Teleporting is a recovery tool, not a general performance fix. Use it after confirming that you are genuinely stuck, and note the location and action that caused the problem when reporting it.
Fix crashes and broad instability with Valve’s sequence
There is no evidence that every Truckful crash has one universal cause. For a game that closes, freezes, or behaves unpredictably, follow Valve’s platform-level order so each test has a clear result.

1. Update SteamOS
Install available SteamOS updates, then restart the Deck. A full restart matters because it clears a suspended game session and reloads the system components involved in launching it.
2. Temporarily disable third-party Desktop Mode applications
Valve advises closing or disabling third-party applications installed through Desktop Mode when an application is unstable. Disable them temporarily, return to Gaming Mode, and launch Truckful again. If the crash disappears, re-enable applications one at a time to identify a conflict.
3. Retest from a clean launch
Do not resume a suspended Truckful session while diagnosing a crash. Exit the game, restart the Deck if necessary, and launch a new session. Record whether the crash occurs at startup, while loading a save, in the Hotel Hub, during driving, or during cargo handling.
4. Change one variable at a time
Avoid simultaneously changing graphics, compatibility tools, controller mappings, and Desktop Mode utilities. A controlled sequence makes it possible to undo a change and identify what mattered.
Reduce stuttering and uneven frame delivery
Valve’s general guidance for poor performance is to lower the graphics preset or individual settings and retest. Truckful includes lower-quality settings, but MythicOwl did not publish a specific Steam Deck preset in the cited update.

Lower the preset first
- Open Truckful’s graphics or video settings.
- Lower the overall quality preset.
- Replay the same route or scene where the stutter occurred.
- If the result improves, raise individual settings one at a time until you find the setting that causes the frame-time spike.
This approach is more informative than changing every option at once. It also avoids presenting an unverified Deck-specific configuration as a guaranteed solution.
Interpret the developer’s 60-fps statement correctly
In an October 6, 2026 Steam Deck update, MythicOwl said it maintained a steady 60 fps on high settings through most of its testing and that lower-quality settings were available for lower-end devices. That is a developer test report, not an independent benchmark or a promise for every Deck model, scene, save, or later game version. It also predates the October 9 launch.
Accordingly, a Deck that stutters in a particular scene is not automatically malfunctioning, and the statement does not establish a specific frame-rate target or graphics preset for every player.

Truckful’s Steam listing advertises SteamOS and Linux support. That means forcing Proton should not be the first response to a controller issue, crash, or stutter. There is also no title-specific Proton version established for Truckful in the available guidance.
When Proton is a useful test
Valve describes selecting a Steam Play compatibility tool as an option when an application needs it. Use that option as a controlled compatibility test when the native-looking run is failing and ordinary updates, restarts, third-party-app checks, and graphics reductions have not isolated the cause.

- Open Truckful’s Steam properties and the Compatibility section. Steam client labels can vary slightly by release.
- Enable the option to force a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, then choose a current Proton release available on the Deck.
- Launch Truckful and reproduce the same symptom.
- Record the original setting and the selected Proton version. If the result is worse, return to the original setting rather than leaving an undocumented change in place.
Do not claim that one Proton version is required or that Proton will fix every crash. Because the game is listed for SteamOS and Linux, a native run and a compatibility-tool run are different diagnostic conditions.
Use the symptom to choose the next test

Report a reproducible problem to MythicOwl
If the issue survives the relevant patch and Valve’s general steps, send a concise report through MythicOwl’s feedback or support channels referenced in its community posts. Include enough technical detail for the developer to reproduce the problem:
- Steam Deck model and SteamOS version.
- Truckful build number and the date you last updated it.
- Whether the game is running with SteamOS/Linux support directly or through Proton, including the Proton version if applicable.
- Controller model, connection type, and whether the Deck interface sees it.
- The exact input or menu action, location, and sequence that triggers the failure.
- Whether a complete restart changes the result.
- Whether third-party Desktop Mode applications were disabled during the test.
- Graphics settings and whether lowering them changes stutter.
For a double-input report, state how many rotations or actions occur per physical press. For a softlock report, say whether the Hotel Hub escape route or teleport menu was available. Specific reproduction steps are more useful than describing the game as simply “broken.”

What is not established yet
The available official notes do not establish a current Steam Deck Verified category after launch, a Truckful-specific Proton recommendation, a universal cause for crashes or stutters, or a Deck-focused future patch. The Steam store page has displayed a stale pre-release availability message even though MythicOwl later announced the October 9 launch, so use the live update feed and current compatibility badge when checking status.
Likewise, MythicOwl’s 60-fps-on-high statement describes its own testing through most of the game and should not be used as a guarantee for every Deck, scene, or build. No cited evidence supports buying a dock, storage card, replacement Deck, or external controller as a troubleshooting step.
