Yes, Toy Story 3 works on PS5, but the version sold for modern consoles is a conversion rather than the original PS4/PSP software running unchanged. That distinction explains many reports of missing saves, unusual controls, freezes or visual differences. The PlayStation Store lists Disney•Pixar Toy Story 3 as a PS4/PS5 release dated March 14, 2025, converted from the PSP version with up-rendering, rewind, quick save and custom video filters. Sony warns that conversion differences can change how the game plays and that some features may not function properly. A separate Toy Story 3 Complete Edition listing is dated October 15, 2026 and advertises upgraded graphics, resolution and frame rate, DualSense vibration, local two-player co-op and extra Toy Box content. Store availability and metadata can change, so first confirm which listing you own.
Use the least destructive fix first: identify the edition, verify the save location and cloud date, test with a new game, then update the console, controller and game. Reinstalling comes after a backup; a PS5 reset is an endpoint, not a routine troubleshooting step.
Start by identifying the Toy Story 3 release
Two PlayStation Store listings can appear under the Toy Story 3 name. The March 14, 2025 release is a PS4/PS5 title converted from the PSP version. Its added features include up-rendering, rewind, quick save and custom video filters. Because it is a conversion, the store specifically warns that it may play differently from the original and that some functions may not work correctly.
The separate Complete Edition listing is for PS4 and PS5, with a listed release date of October 15, 2026. It advertises upgraded graphics, resolution and frame rate, DualSense vibration, local two-player co-op and additional Toy Box content. If your library or disc shows a different edition name, use that edition’s current store page and patch information rather than assuming the two products have identical saves or features.

Check the edition and installation
- Highlight Toy Story 3 on the PS5 home screen and press the Options button.
- Open Information or the game’s store page and note whether the product is the standard converted release or Complete Edition.
- Check that the game has finished installing and that no download or copy operation is still pending.
- Choose Options again and select Check for Update. Install any available game update before diagnosing a save, controller or frame-rate problem.
- In Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings, install a pending PS5 system update.
Do not delete saved data while checking the edition. A game reinstall can be repeated; an unbacked-up save may not be recoverable.
Use this symptom-to-fix order
| Symptom | First action | Next action | Highest-risk action to postpone |
|---|---|---|---|
| The game says there is no save or loads an older progress point | Open the PS4 saved-data area and check cloud and console dates | Back up the known-good copy, then download the intended cloud copy manually | Deleting local or cloud data |
| Save or synchronization error | Retry the sync | Turn Enable Auto-Sync off, then on again | Removing every copy of the save |
| Old save crashes but the game starts otherwise | Start a new game without the existing save | Preserve the old file and reinstall only after backup | Deleting the original save before testing recovery |
| Buttons or sticks do nothing | Restart the game and check its controller settings | Update, USB-pair and test with a known-good official controller | Rebuilding the database before hardware checks |
| Freezing, stuttering or launch errors | Finish installation, update software and restart | Move the game from USB extended storage to internal storage, then reinstall if needed | Resetting the PS5 |
The order separates a game-specific fault from a system-wide one while minimizing risk to progress.
Fix a missing, old or unsynchronised save
1. Treat the save as PS4 data on PS5
Although the store labels the game as PS4/PS5, the saved-data controls use the PS4 category for this release. Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS4). Do not look only under the PS5 saved-data heading; that can make a valid Toy Story 3 file appear to be missing.
If you use PlayStation Plus cloud storage, remember that PS4 data uploaded to the cloud is not automatically placed on the PS5 console. PlayStation’s cloud-storage guidance requires a manual download to console storage. Cloud storage is a PlayStation Plus subscription feature.
2. Check synchronization before changing files
When the console reports a sync error, retry once. If the error affects more than Toy Story 3, go to the PS5 settings for saved-data synchronization and switch Enable Auto-Sync off, then on again. A persistent multi-game sync failure is a PlayStation service or account problem rather than evidence that this particular save is corrupted; use PlayStation Support if the toggle and retry do not clear it.

- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
Do not choose a cloud or console copy solely because it is offered first. Compare the displayed dates and sizes. A newer timestamp can represent a failed or unwanted session, while an older timestamp may be the progress you actually need.
3. Make a safety copy before experimenting
If PlayStation Plus is available, upload the current console save before downloading anything over it. The upload gives you a reference copy if a later step makes the local file worse. After checking the cloud timestamp, download only the intended copy to PS5 console storage.

- Download the cloud copy when the local file is clearly older, absent or known to fail.
- Never delete both locations while trying to resolve a mismatch.
If you have no cloud copy and the console file is absent, the PS5 cannot reconstruct progress that was never saved. The practical recovery options are a different console backup or a surviving cloud file.
4. Use a clean new-game test to detect corruption
PlayStation’s crash guidance recommends starting the game from the beginning without an existing save. At the title screen, choose the option to begin a new game rather than loading the affected file. Play far enough to confirm that the game accepts input, renders a level and performs a save.
Interpret the result this way:
- New game works, old file fails: the existing save may be corrupted. Keep the original and any cloud copy; do not overwrite them while testing.
- New game also freezes or crashes: the cause is more likely an installation, update, storage, controller or system issue.
- Both work but progress is missing: you probably loaded the wrong edition, profile, console copy or cloud date. Recheck the PS4 saved-data menu and timestamps.
This test is diagnostic, not a replacement for your campaign. Stop before creating an automatic save that could overwrite the slot you are trying to preserve.

5. Reinstall without sacrificing saved data
Back up the save first. Then highlight Toy Story 3 on the home screen, press Options, choose Delete for the game application, and redownload it from your library or reinstall the disc. Deleting the application is different from deleting saved data; verify that the saved-data entry remains under Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS4).
After the reinstall completes, install the latest patch before loading the old file. If the game is on USB extended storage, move it to the internal PS5 storage before reinstalling; launch and data errors can be caused by the external location. A reinstall repairs missing or damaged application files, but it cannot repair a corrupted save itself.
Fix a controller that does not work in Toy Story 3
Know which pads PS5 supports
PlayStation states that DualSense, DUALSHOCK 4 and officially licensed third-party gamepads work with supported PS4 games on PS5. Not every unlicensed or generic third-party controller is compatible. For diagnosis, use an official DualSense or a controller that PlayStation identifies as supported for PS4 games on PS5.
Follow the controller checks in order
- Restart the game. Close Toy Story 3 from the home screen, relaunch it and test input at the title screen. If the game provides controller configuration, open it, restore defaults and verify that buttons have not been remapped.
- Update the PS5 and controller. Install the console update under Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. For DualSense device software, open Settings > Accessories > Controllers (General) > DualSense Wireless Controller Device Software and apply the offered update.
- Update Toy Story 3. Highlight the game, press Options and select Check for Update.
- Pair by USB. Connect the controller to the PS5 with a data-capable USB cable, then press the PS button. A charge-only cable may power the pad without carrying the data needed for pairing.
- Reset the controller. Use the small reset button and the manufacturer’s reset procedure, then reconnect it by USB and press PS. Resetting clears the controller’s pairing state; it does not repair damaged buttons, sticks or a broken cable.
- Cross-test hardware. Try a known-good official DualSense. If the second pad works, the original controller or its cable is the likely fault. If neither works only in Toy Story 3, focus on the game’s configuration and update.
- Use Safe Mode only after those checks. If controller input works in the PS5 menus but fails unpredictably across games, Safe Mode’s database maintenance can be considered after backups.
Separate a controller fault from a game fault
Test the PS5 home screen and another supported game before changing system data. A controller that fails everywhere points to pairing, firmware, cable or hardware. A controller that works elsewhere but not in Toy Story 3 points to the game’s control mapping, a conversion-specific compatibility issue or a damaged installation. Avoid assuming that vibration behavior proves a pad is defective: the converted release and Complete Edition advertise different feature sets, and feature support can vary by edition.

Complete the low-risk checks first
- Confirm that the installation has finished rather than launching while content is still copying.
- Install the latest Toy Story 3 update and current PS5 system software.
- Restart the PS5, then launch the game from the home screen.
- If the game is installed on USB extended storage, move it to internal PS5 storage and test again.
- Run the clean new-game test described above. It distinguishes a failing save from a problem that affects the whole application.
There is no published Toy Story 3-specific PS5 benchmark, crash-rate statistic or exhaustive official bug count. A visible frame-rate drop or freeze therefore should be evaluated by whether it follows a particular save, location, storage device or controller—not against an invented performance target.

Use Safe Mode maintenance carefully
Safe Mode provides two relevant maintenance choices:
- Clear System Software Cache: intended for system-feature issues and performance drops. It is a non-destructive maintenance step compared with a reset.
- Rebuild Database: scans the console’s content database and recreates it. Use it after the game, controller, update and storage checks, especially when the home screen or several games also behave abnormally.
Follow PlayStation’s current Safe Mode instructions to enter the menu, connect the controller by USB when requested and select only the maintenance option you intend to use. These procedures do not substitute for a save backup.
Reinstall when application data is suspect
If Toy Story 3 still fails to launch or repeatedly reports data errors, back up the PS4 save and reinstall the game. Delete only the application, redownload or reinstall it, apply its update and test a new game before importing the old save. This sequence tells you whether the repaired application is stable before an old file is reintroduced.
Reserve Reset PS5 for the endpoint
Reset PS5 deletes all user data. It is not a normal fix for one problematic game and should be considered only after verified backups, PlayStation Support guidance and failure across broader system functions. Confirm that saves, captures, settings and other important data exist somewhere you can restore before choosing it. A reset cannot recover a save that was deleted without a backup.

Choose the remedy by risk and scope
| Remedy | Scope | Effect on saves | Reversibility | When it fits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Restart game or PS5 | Temporary software state | No intended change | Fully reversible | One-off input, launch or freeze |
| Retry sync and toggle Enable Auto-Sync | Account and synchronization | No deletion if you do not overwrite files | Reversible | Sync errors affecting one or several games |
| Download a checked cloud copy | Toy Story 3 saved data | Replaces the selected local copy | Reversible only if the old copy is backed up | Cloud timestamp is the known-good version |
| Controller update, USB pairing or reset | Input hardware | None | Reversible | Buttons or sticks fail while the game otherwise runs |
| Move from USB extended storage | Application storage | Saved data is separate, but back it up first | Reversible | Launch errors or stutter from an external installation |
| Clear cache or rebuild database | PS5 system maintenance | Not intended to delete saves | Generally reversible, but maintenance can take time | Broader system-feature or database problems |
| Delete and reinstall the game | Application files | Safe only when saved data is preserved and backed up | Reversible by redownloading | Damaged installation or persistent data errors |
| Reset PS5 | Entire console | Deletes user data | Not reversible without backups | Last resort after support guidance |
When to stop troubleshooting yourself
Contact PlayStation Support when a synchronization error persists across multiple games after retrying and toggling Auto-Sync, when official controllers fail in several games after updates and USB pairing, or when the PS5 reports storage or system errors that survive a restart and approved maintenance. Tell support the edition name, whether the game is on internal or USB storage, whether a new game works, the dates of the local and cloud saves, and which maintenance steps you already completed.
For a Toy Story 3-only failure, preserve the affected save and describe the exact trigger: loading a slot, entering a level, enabling a video filter, starting co-op or using a particular controller. That information is more useful than repeatedly deleting and redownloading the same application.
What a successful recovery should look like
- The PS5 identifies the correct Toy Story 3 edition and shows the game as fully installed and updated.
- The save is visible under Saved Data (PS4), with a known date in either console storage or cloud storage.
- A backup or verified cloud copy exists before any overwrite, reinstall or system maintenance.
- A new-game test confirms whether the old save is the fault boundary.
- An official, updated controller operates in the PS5 menus and in the game.
- The game runs from internal storage after updates, with Safe Mode maintenance used only if the broader system still exhibits problems.
The central rule is simple: protect progress first, isolate the failing layer second, and use destructive system actions only when the evidence points beyond the game itself. The converted PS4/PS5 release is playable on PS5, but its conversion caveat means that an original-version expectation is not a reliable diagnostic standard.
