If your Windows laptop’s touchscreen is unresponsive or behaving incorrectly, restart the computer, install available Windows updates, and check Device Manager to see whether the touchscreen is disabled. If those steps do not help, use the support instructions for your laptop’s manufacturer. Surface diagnostics and driver steps apply only to the Surface models covered by Microsoft’s guidance; they are not universal Windows laptop procedures.
Work through the checks in order, testing touch after each one. This keeps the first steps low-risk and helps you explain the problem if you need support. A touchscreen problem does not, by itself, establish that the screen has failed: the issue may involve Windows or a driver, or it may need model-specific diagnostics and service.
1. Restart the laptop
Save your work, then restart Windows and test the touchscreen again. Microsoft’s general Windows troubleshooting guidance starts with a restart for touch that is unresponsive or not working correctly. This is a useful first check before changing drivers or pursuing a repair.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAfter the laptop starts again, try the touchscreen in the way that was failing. Note whether it does not respond at all, responds inaccurately, or behaves differently from before. That distinction will be useful if you need to follow the manufacturer’s diagnostics or describe the problem to support. If touch remains unreliable, continue to Windows Update rather than assuming a restart has ruled out every software issue.

2. Install available Windows updates
Microsoft recommends checking for updates after restarting. The paths differ between Windows 11 and Windows 10. Follow the path for the version installed on the laptop, and install the updates Windows offers before testing touch again.
Windows 11
- Open Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options.
- Turn on updates for other Microsoft products.
- Install available optional updates.
- Return to Windows Update and select Check for updates.
- Install available updates, then restart the laptop—even if Windows does not ask you to restart.
Do not stop after checking only for the standard Windows Update result: Microsoft’s Windows 11 sequence also calls for turning on updates for other Microsoft products and installing available optional updates. Once installation is complete, restart even when Windows has not specifically requested one. Then test the touchscreen again to see whether the problem has changed.
Windows 10
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Check for and install available updates. Install optional updates when Windows offers them.
- Restart after installation and test touch again.
The Windows 10 path is different from the Windows 11 path, so use the settings labels for your version rather than trying to follow the other version’s menu sequence. If optional updates are offered, Microsoft’s general guidance includes installing them. Restart after installation, then check whether the touchscreen now responds as expected.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says free software updates through Windows Update, technical assistance, and security fixes ended after that date. A Windows 10 PC can still work, but it no longer receives those free support updates; Microsoft recommends moving to Windows 11. The end of support does not itself identify the cause of a touchscreen fault, but it matters when considering ongoing software updates and support for a Windows 10 device.
3. Check whether Windows disabled the touchscreen
A touchscreen can appear in Windows while being disabled. Check its status in Device Manager before assuming the screen needs repair. Microsoft’s enabling instructions focus on the touchscreen entry under Human Interface Devices.
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Human Interface Devices.
- Look for HID-compliant touch screen.
- If the entry is present but disabled, select Enable device.
- If more than one touchscreen entry is listed, repeat the check and enable the relevant entries.
The important distinction is whether the touchscreen entry is present and disabled, not just whether the screen is failing to respond. If the entry is disabled, enable it and test again. Microsoft says to repeat the step for each touchscreen entry when more than one is listed; do not assume that enabling only one entry resolves the problem if other touchscreen entries are also disabled.

If no HID-compliant touch screen entry appears, or enabling it does not restore touch, continue with the manufacturer’s support path rather than installing a driver intended for a different laptop model. The general Windows guidance does not establish that a missing entry means one particular component has failed, and a generic driver is not a reliable universal repair. The maker’s instructions for the exact device are the appropriate next source for model-specific checks.

Once you have restarted, installed available updates, and checked Device Manager, the right next step depends on the device. Microsoft’s general Windows guidance points Surface owners to Surface troubleshooting and owners of other PCs to the device manufacturer. Surface-specific diagnostic and driver procedures should not be transferred to another brand simply because it also runs Windows.
| What you have or observe | What to do next |
|---|---|
| A Surface device | Follow Microsoft’s Surface touchscreen troubleshooting guidance. Its UEFI test and model-specific driver instructions are for Surface, not other Windows laptops. |
| A laptop from another manufacturer | Use that manufacturer’s support instructions for your exact model. Microsoft directs users of non-Surface PCs to the device manufacturer when general Windows steps do not resolve the problem. |
| Touch still fails after the general Windows checks | Ask the manufacturer about diagnostics and service options. Persistent touch failure may require hardware service; the troubleshooting steps alone cannot establish which component has failed. |
When choosing between more software troubleshooting and a service request, consider whether the laptop is a Surface or another manufacturer’s model, whether the touchscreen entry is present and enabled, and whether the manufacturer offers an independent diagnostic test for that device. For Surface, Microsoft’s UEFI test provides a specific distinction between touch behavior outside Windows and touch behavior in Windows. Microsoft does not establish that test as a procedure for every laptop, so ask the maker of a non-Surface PC which diagnostics apply.
Surface-only checks and troubleshooting
The following diagnostics and procedures apply to Surface devices covered by Microsoft’s Surface guidance. Do not treat them as instructions for a laptop from another manufacturer. Microsoft’s Surface guidance includes a UEFI touch test, specific driver steps, update checks through the Surface app, and—if necessary—a reset. These are not general Windows laptop steps.
Test touch in Surface UEFI
Microsoft recommends testing the touchscreen in UEFI on Surface. If touch works there, Microsoft says, “the issue probably involves Windows or the touch driver.” If touch does not work in UEFI, Microsoft says hardware failure is likely and recommends service. This distinction can help Surface owners decide whether to pursue software troubleshooting or contact Microsoft for service; it does not establish a universal UEFI test for all Windows laptops.
Recommended Free Tools
The test is useful because it compares touch outside the usual Windows environment with touch in Windows. A Surface that responds in UEFI but not as expected in Windows is more likely to have a Windows- or touch-driver-related issue, according to Microsoft. A Surface that does not respond in UEFI has a different signal: hardware failure is likely, and Microsoft recommends service. Neither result should be generalized to another manufacturer’s system without that maker’s instructions.

Reinstall Surface touchscreen drivers only when the model guidance applies
Microsoft’s Surface instructions cover reinstalling the Intel Precise Touch Device and HID-compliant touch screen entries, then scanning for hardware changes. They also direct Surface owners to check Surface and Windows updates through the Surface app. Follow Microsoft’s instructions for the specific Surface model rather than applying these driver names or steps to another brand of PC.
These device names are not a recommendation to search for and install similarly named drivers on any Windows laptop. Driver instructions depend on the hardware and model. If your device is not one of the Surface models covered by Microsoft’s guidance, use the laptop manufacturer’s support information instead. The safe general Device Manager check is the earlier step: find the HID-compliant touch screen entry and enable it if it is disabled. Driver removal and reinstallation are a separate, Surface-specific procedure in the guidance described here.
Microsoft warns Surface Pro X owners not to uninstall drivers because a full system reset is the only way to restore them. Treat a reset as a later option, not a first troubleshooting step. Back up important files before resetting a device or making a service or replacement decision. A reset is more consequential than restarting Windows or enabling a disabled entry, so do not make it the first response to a touchscreen problem.
Use the symptom to guide Surface troubleshooting
- Inaccurate touch, or touch failing across some or all of the screen: Microsoft’s Surface guidance says these symptoms can warrant service.
- Phantom or ghost touches: Nearby electronic interference may be involved. As an initial check, move the Surface or nearby equipment and see whether the behavior changes.
- Slow touch response: The cause may be overall device performance rather than the touchscreen itself.
These observations can help Surface owners decide what to report and what to check first; they are not definitive diagnoses. For phantom touches, the initial check is to relocate the Surface or nearby equipment and see whether the behavior changes. For slow response, consider that the broader device performance may be involved rather than assuming the touchscreen alone is at fault. For inaccurate touch or failure across part or all of the screen, Microsoft’s Surface guidance identifies service as a possible next step.
These are Surface-specific recommendations, not diagnoses for every laptop. If the general Windows checks fail on a non-Surface PC, the laptop manufacturer is the appropriate source for model-specific diagnostics. Do not use the Surface UEFI result, Surface driver names, or Surface reset directions as a substitute for the support procedure for another brand.
When to contact the manufacturer
Move to the device maker’s support path if restarting, updating Windows, and checking the touchscreen entry do not restore touch. Have the laptop’s exact model information ready and describe what you tried. Ask whether the maker provides independent diagnostics for your device and whether service is appropriate. Repair availability and options depend on the manufacturer, your location, warranty status, and diagnosis.

When you contact support, explain the symptom in plain terms: whether touch is unresponsive, inaccurate, failing across part or all of the display, producing phantom touches, or responding slowly. Mention that you restarted, checked for the available updates for your Windows version, and checked whether the HID-compliant touch screen entry was disabled. If you enabled an entry or if no entry was present, say so. This gives support a clearer starting point without suggesting that you have already identified a failed part.
Ask which diagnostics apply to your exact model and whether the next step is service. The answer may depend on the manufacturer, your location, warranty status, and the diagnosis. Microsoft’s general Windows guidance does not establish one repair option, price, or hardware replacement for every laptop, and the exact device needs to be identified before model-specific parts or service can be considered.
There is no single physical accessory or generic driver that is established as a reliable fix for all touchscreen failures. A mouse can provide temporary input while you troubleshoot, but it does not repair the touchscreen. Screen replacement or other hardware work should follow a model-specific diagnosis. If a repair is recommended, use the maker’s authorized or otherwise appropriate service route for your device and confirm the options for your location and warranty situation.

- A touchscreen fault does not automatically mean the display assembly has failed; the first general checks are restart, Windows updates, and Device Manager.
- A Surface UEFI test is not a universal test for every Windows laptop.
- Surface driver names and reinstall steps are not instructions for another manufacturer’s PC.
- A mouse is a temporary way to interact with the laptop, not a touchscreen repair.
- Repair eligibility, cost, and availability depend on model, manufacturer, location, warranty, and diagnosis; the steps above do not establish a universal price or repair outcome.
