MacBooks do not have built-in touchscreen displays, so there is no setting that makes the screen respond to touch. If the pointer is not working, the likely issue is the built-in trackpad. Try the checks below; if you meant that taps on the display do nothing, that behavior is normal for a MacBook.
First, identify which input problem you have
Apple describes a MacBook’s built-in input devices as its keyboard and trackpad. You can also connect an external mouse or trackpad, but these accessories do not add touch operation to the built-in display. See Apple’s guide to using a keyboard, mouse, and trackpad on Mac.
- Touching the display does nothing: This is expected; the MacBook display is not a touchscreen.
- The pointer does not move or the trackpad is difficult to use: Continue with the trackpad checks below.
Try these checks if the trackpad pointer will not move
- Use one finger to move the pointer. On a Mac laptop, two or more fingers do not move the pointer. Place one finger on the trackpad and move it to test pointer movement.
- Connect the MacBook to power. A low-battery alert may not be visible. Apple also suggests connecting an external keyboard to check for an alert that may be hidden from view.
- Test the trackpad again. If it still does not respond or is difficult to use after these checks, a hardware problem may be involved.

Use an external pointing device if you need to navigate
A compatible wired or wireless mouse is an optional way to use the Mac while you arrange service, or if you simply prefer a mouse. Check that the device works with your exact MacBook and that its connector matches the computer. Depending on the Mac’s ports and the accessory, a wired device may need a suitable cable or adapter. An external mouse lets you control the pointer; it does not make the display touch-sensitive.

When to contact Apple for trackpad service
If the basic checks do not resolve the problem, contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. Apple provides Mac service and repair options.
Avoid opening the MacBook or replacing the trackpad based on generic instructions. Repair steps and parts vary by model; for example, Apple’s MacBook Air (M2, 2022) Repair Manual covers that specific model and is not a general procedure for every MacBook. Consult documentation for your exact model before considering any internal repair.
