Playing with friends? Godlike.Host runs hosted Minecraft Java servers from 10 data-center locations, with free DDoS protection.
A ticking-entity crash means the server failed while updating one stored entity or block entity. The crash report normally identifies the exact type, unique ID, world, and XYZ coordinates. Stop the server, back up the world, then choose the least destructive recovery that fits your situation: restore a clean backup, remove only the identified entity, repair the affected chunk, or correct a mod/version mismatch and then clean up the already-saved damage.
What a “ticking entity” crash means
Minecraft updates (“ticks”) entities repeatedly. Entities include mobs, animals, projectiles, vehicles and many modded objects. A ticking-entity crash occurs when one of those updates throws an error that the server cannot recover from. The failing object may be invalid, corrupted, incompatible with the current mod set, or located in a chunk that was damaged while being saved.
The crash is usually repeatable: the server starts, loads the same world and chunk, reaches the same object, and crashes again. That is why simply restarting often changes nothing. You must either remove or repair the stored object, restore an earlier world state, or fix the software that created it.
On modded servers, corruption is reported most often in larger modpacks and in stacks where the Minecraft version, mod loader, mod versions or Java runtime do not match what the pack expects. Vanilla servers can also fail, but the problem is less common there.

Entity versus block entity
- “Entity being ticked” normally identifies a mob, item, projectile, vehicle or modded entity. The report should include an entity type, unique ID, dimension or world and XYZ coordinates.
- “Block entity being ticked” points to a block-attached object such as a chest, furnace or a modded machine. Treat it as stored block data, not as a free-moving mob.
Do not delete an entire region when the report gives you a specific object. A narrowly targeted removal has a much better chance of preserving builds, inventories and other entities.
Protect the world before attempting a fix
Every removal or chunk-reset method changes saved data. A repair that appears successful can still remove a player’s items, a machine network or a section of a base. Make a restorable copy before editing anything.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Stop the Minecraft server cleanly. If it is stuck in a crash loop, terminate it from the control panel or host console and wait until the process is fully stopped.
- Copy the complete world folder to separate storage. Include the overworld and any dimension folders used by the server, plus the server configuration and modpack files if you may need to roll back the software.
- Label the copy with the date and do not edit it. Perform experiments only on a duplicate. Keep the original backup until players have verified that the repaired world is healthy.
If you have several backups, keep at least one from before the first crash and one recent copy for comparison. A backup made after the corrupt entity was saved may reproduce the failure and is not a clean restore point.
Read the crash report and locate the culprit
Open the newest crash-report file generated when the server failed. Search for the exact heading “Entity being ticked” or “Block entity being ticked.” Record every useful field before making a change:
- Entity or block-entity type, including the mod namespace if shown.
- Unique entity ID or other identifier.
- World or dimension name.
- Exact X, Y and Z coordinates.
- Any stack trace line that names a mod, block, machine or capability.
Coordinates are the key to a targeted repair. The world name tells you which dimension to edit, and the type helps you decide whether a normal entity selector, a block-entity editor or a mod-specific tool is appropriate. If the report identifies a machine from a particular mod, check that mod before removing unrelated software.
Some failures are described only as a “ticking world” crash and provide no usable coordinates. In that case, do not guess at a chunk. A recent clean backup is the safest first choice; blind region deletion can destroy a large, unknown area.

Choose a recovery method
The options below are ordered by how much saved data they expose to risk. A method that works on an unloaded chunk may be useful in a crash loop, but it also bypasses the game’s normal safety checks.
| Method | Speed | Residual data-loss risk | Backup required | Works on an unloaded chunk | Console access | Mod-specific |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Restore a clean backup | Slowest if a large world must be copied | Lowest residual risk | Yes | Yes | No | No |
Targeted /kill at the reported coordinates |
Fast | Low when the selector is exact | Yes | No; the chunk must load | Yes | No |
| NBT or region editor, such as NBTExplorer or MCASelector chunk reset | Moderate | Higher | Yes | Yes | No, but offline file access is needed | No |
| Forge or NeoForge config removal option | Automatic after configuration | Depends on the mod and option | Yes | Often, if the option runs during loading | Usually no | Yes |
| CoFH Core wildcard-removal command | Fast in supported modpacks | High if the wildcard matches more than the culprit | Yes | Yes, according to hosting-guide descriptions | Yes | Yes; requires CoFH Core |
| Update or remove the offending mod | Varies | Does not itself remove saved damage | Yes | Not applicable | Not necessarily | Yes |
These are practical procedures described by server-hosting guides, not a single official Mojang repair workflow. Exact menu names, commands and configuration keys vary by Minecraft release, loader and modpack. Check the versions in your own stack before applying a step.
Step-by-step repair workflow
1. Stop, copy and document the current state
Follow the backup procedure first. Also copy the latest crash report and note the time of the failure. If several players were online, ask what happened immediately before the crash: placing a machine, loading a new area, changing dimensions or adding a mod can narrow the cause.
2. Check Minecraft, loader, mod and Java compatibility
Compare the server’s Minecraft version, Forge, NeoForge or Fabric version, every mod version and the Java version against the versions required by the pack. A client may connect while the server still has an incompatible server-side mod. A loader update can also expose a bug in an older mod.
- Do not update one mod in isolation on a tightly coupled modpack unless its release notes or pack documentation says that combination is supported.
- If the crash report names a mod, first look for a build that explicitly supports your Minecraft and loader versions.
- If a recent update introduced the crash, roll back that change on a copy and test before touching the live world.
Correcting the version mismatch addresses the cause, but it does not erase an invalid entity already written to the world. Plan a cleanup or restore as a separate step.
3. Restore a recent clean backup when one exists
Restoring a backup is the most reliable fix because it removes both the bad object and any related damage saved after the backup was made. Stop the server, move the current world folder out of the server directory, and place the clean copy in its original location. Do not merge individual region files unless you understand the consequences; a partial merge can mix incompatible world states.

After restoring, correct the mod or configuration issue that caused the failure before allowing players to revisit the area. Otherwise the same action can recreate the crash. If the backup predates important progress, preserve the crashed copy separately so you can recover individual information later with an editor.
4. Use a targeted kill when the server stays online long enough
This option is appropriate when the report supplies coordinates, the relevant chunk can load, and the server remains up long enough to accept a command. Keep the backup even after a successful command.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Start the server with the normal mod and loader set. Watch the console and be ready to stop it if the crash returns.
- Use a command that selects only the reported entity near the recorded X, Y and Z. A coordinate-bounded selector is safer than a global command. For example, an administrator might use a selector shaped like
/kill @e[type=<reported_type>,x=<X>,y=<Y>,z=<Z>,distance=..1]; replace the placeholders with the actual values and use the entity type syntax accepted by your Minecraft version. - If the report gives a unique ID and your version supports selecting that identifier, prefer the ID over a broad type selector. Never use a wildcard that could match every mob unless you intentionally accept that loss.
- Confirm in the console that one intended entity was removed, then stop and restart the server. Test the affected area before returning the server to players.
A block entity such as a chest or furnace is not normally removed with an ordinary mob selector. For a “Block entity being ticked” report, use a backup restore, a mod-supported removal method or an offline editor instead.
5. Repair an unloaded chunk with an NBT or region editor
If the server crashes before the problematic chunk can load, an offline editor can remove the stored object or reset the chunk. NBTExplorer and MCASelector are examples used for this kind of region work.
- Work on a duplicate of the world, with the server stopped. Never open the live world for writing while the server process is running.
- Open the correct dimension and locate the chunk containing the reported coordinates. Confirm the chunk coordinates from the XYZ position rather than selecting a neighboring chunk by eye.
- Search the entity or block-entity data for the reported type, ID and position. Remove only the identified record when the editor lets you do so.
- If the record cannot be safely isolated, reset the entire affected chunk as a last resort. This can remove terrain changes, containers, machines, items and structures in that chunk.
- Save the duplicate, start the server and test it. Keep the untouched backup until the world has been checked from multiple dimensions and by affected players.
Region editing is powerful but unforgiving. A wrong dimension, chunk or tag can create a second problem that is harder to diagnose than the original crash.
6. Use Forge or NeoForge removal options only when documented
Some mods provide a configuration flag that removes or skips a corrupt entity during world loading. A hosting guide places a Forge 1.13-and-newer server configuration in the world’s serverconfig folder, with a file commonly named forge-server.toml. The exact path and flag names are version-dependent, and the same setting may not exist in current Forge or NeoForge builds.

Use this route only when the mod’s documentation identifies the option for your exact version. Change it on the copied world, start the server, verify that the object was handled, and then revert the temporary flag after the server boots. Leaving a broad removal setting enabled can delete legitimate entities on future loads.
7. Treat CoFH Core wildcard removal as a last-resort tool
Modpacks that include CoFH Core may expose a command intended to remove entities even when their chunks are unloaded. The wildcard form is dangerous: it can match intended mobs as well as the corrupt object. Confirm the command syntax for the installed CoFH Core and pack version, narrow the target as much as possible, and run it only against a backup copy first. If you cannot prove what the wildcard matches, restore a clean backup or use an editor instead.
What not to rely on
Removing the mod by itself
Uninstalling the named mod can stop new code from running, but it does not undo entity data already stored in the world. It can also make the world less readable if other blocks or items depend on that mod. Make a backup, use the mod’s supported migration or removal procedure, and still clean up or restore the affected entity.
Old Paper configuration advice
Older guides mention a Paper setting for removing corrupt tile entities. Third-party reporting says that option was removed from current builds, but its present status is not verified here. Do not assume that a setting found in an old tutorial exists on your Paper version. Check the configuration generated by your exact build and consult current Paper documentation before changing it.

Deleting random region files
Deleting region files without coordinates is a blunt reset. It can remove many chunks and still fail to remove the object if you chose the wrong dimension or region. Use it only when you have a verified backup and have deliberately accepted the loss of the complete region.

The server crashes immediately after every start
Keep it offline, restore the latest clean backup, and test the version combination on a copy. If no usable backup exists, identify the coordinates from the crash report and edit the affected chunk offline. Do not repeatedly start the live server; each failed load can complicate recovery and may overwrite logs needed for diagnosis.

The report names a machine, chest or furnace
Follow the “Block entity being ticked” path. Verify the dimension and coordinates, then use a mod-supported cleanup or an NBT editor. Removing nearby mobs will not repair a block entity, and breaking a visually similar block in another location will not touch the stored record named by the report.
The report has no coordinates
Prefer a clean backup. Without a location, a targeted command cannot be made safely, and a random chunk reset can destroy unrelated construction. Compare crash reports from different starts; if later reports reveal a location or a consistent mod name, use that evidence before editing files.

- Verify that the command or editor changed the correct dimension and chunk.
- Check whether a second entity of the same type was saved nearby.
- Recheck Minecraft, loader, mod and Java compatibility; the original cause may still be present.
- Restore the backup and test the world with the suspected mod disabled only on a copy. If the world then loads, follow the mod author’s supported update or migration path rather than deleting random data.
Verify the repaired world before reopening it
- Start the server with the corrected version set and monitor the full startup log.
- Load the reported dimension and approach the former coordinates cautiously. Confirm that the server remains online through several restarts.
- Check player inventories, containers, machines, portals and other dimensions for collateral loss.
- Ask affected players to test the area before restoring normal access.
- Make a new backup only after the repaired world has passed those checks, and retain the pre-repair copy for rollback.
Keep a short incident record containing the crash-report fields, versions, chosen fix and result. If the crash happens again, that record distinguishes a recurring software incompatibility from a one-time corrupted save.
Preventing another ticking-entity crash
- Keep scheduled, restorable world backups rather than relying on a single recent copy.
- Change one mod, loader or Java version at a time on a test copy.
- Match the server’s Minecraft, loader, mod and Java versions to the pack’s documented combination.
- After adding a large mod or machine, load and save a test area before inviting players into it.
- Keep crash reports and server logs long enough to compare repeated failures.
- Document dimension names and backup dates so an emergency restore does not overwrite the wrong world.
When to ask for specialist help
Escalate to the modpack or server-software maintainer when the crash remains after a clean restore, the report implicates several mods, or the world contains valuable data that an editor could damage. Provide the Minecraft version, loader and Java versions, mod list, complete crash report, coordinates, dimension and the exact change that preceded the failure. Remove private player information before posting logs publicly, but do not omit the lines that identify the ticking object.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will restarting the server fix a ticking-entity crash?
Usually not. If the same invalid entity is saved in the world, each restart loads it again and reproduces the crash. Use a clean backup or remove the identified object after making a backup.
Can I fix a ticking block entity with /kill?
A normal mob selector is not the right tool for a chest, furnace or machine. Follow the block-entity coordinates in the report and use a supported mod cleanup, backup restore or offline NBT/region edit.
Is deleting the offending mod enough?
No. Removing the mod may prevent its code from running, but the damaged entity data can remain in the world. Correct the version problem and separately restore or clean the saved data.
What should I do if I have no backup?
Stop the server, preserve the current world, and work on a duplicate. If coordinates are available, attempt the narrowest offline edit possible; if they are not, seek help before deleting regions.
