If the Xbox app will not open, stays on a loading screen, shows an empty library, or refuses to start a game, work from the least disruptive checks toward the diagnosis that matches your symptom. Close and reopen the app, restart Windows when updates are pending, update Windows and Microsoft Store, then use the Xbox app’s Repair and Reset options before reinstalling. Reserve Gaming Services removal and clean-boot testing for cases that specifically justify them.
First identify what is actually failing
“Xbox app won’t open,” “Xbox app stuck loading,” and “Xbox app not showing games” describe different failure points. The right fix depends on whether Windows cannot launch the app, the app opens but cannot populate account data, or one game fails after the app is working.

Before changing anything, sign in to the Microsoft account that owns the game or subscription. If the problem started after an update, note whether Windows has asked for a restart. Microsoft’s Store guidance says app availability can also depend on region, family settings, account sign-in, device compatibility, and device authorization; an absent title is not automatically a broken Xbox installation. Also check Xbox status at the time you are troubleshooting. A service-side problem can resemble a local loading failure, while a status page cannot explain an app that crashes before it displays a window. Treat status as context, not as proof of the cause.

Use this low-risk order of operations
The sequence below keeps reversible checks ahead of actions that clear data or alter installed services. Stop when the symptom is resolved; do not apply the Gaming Services procedure to a generic loading problem simply because the app is an Xbox product.
1. Close the app and restart Windows
- Close the Xbox window. If it appears frozen, open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc, select Xbox or a related unresponsive process, and choose End task.
- Open the app again from the Start menu. A second launch distinguishes a transient hang from a repeatable failure.
- Restart the PC, especially if Windows recently installed updates or is showing a restart notification. A pending restart can prevent Store apps or their dependencies from registering correctly.
Microsoft’s general Store-app instructions place closing and reopening, updating, and restarting ahead of repair or reinstall. They are general Windows Store-app guidance rather than a promise that every Xbox-specific launch issue will be fixed.
If the app opens after the restart, test the original action rather than assuming the problem is gone. Open the library, select the title that previously failed, and note whether the same error returns. That distinction helps support determine whether the interruption was temporary or whether an underlying package or account issue remains.
2. Update Windows and Microsoft Store
- Open Settings > Windows Update, install available updates, and restart if Windows requests it.
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Select Library, then Get updates. Allow Store updates to finish, including updates for Xbox and its supporting components.
- Launch Xbox again after the Store queue is clear.
If Microsoft Store itself will not open, record that fact. It points toward Store installation or cache trouble rather than an Xbox-only problem and makes the cache step below more relevant.
Do not interrupt a Store update by repeatedly launching and closing Xbox. Let the queue finish, then restart if Windows or the Store requests it. If only one title is unavailable while other Store apps install normally, keep the focus on that title’s account, region, compatibility, or authorization requirements instead of treating the whole Store as broken.
Reset the Microsoft Store cache when Store behavior is involved
wsreset.exe resets the Microsoft Store app cache; it does not reset the Xbox app’s saved data. Use it when Store pages fail to load, downloads remain stuck, or Store updates appear inconsistent.
- Press Windows+R to open the Run dialog.
- Type
wsreset.exeand select OK. - A blank command window normally appears. Microsoft says it closes after about ten seconds and the Store opens automatically.
- Return to Microsoft Store > Library > Get updates, let updates complete, and try Xbox again.
These are Microsoft’s documented Store-cache steps; details and related availability checks are in the Store app availability article. Do not confuse this cache reset with the Xbox app’s Reset button, which has a different effect.

Repair, reset, or reinstall the Xbox app
Windows provides separate Repair and Reset actions for many Store-distributed apps. The labels vary slightly between Windows 10 and Windows 11, but the path is normally through the app list.
Try Repair first
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps. On some Windows 10 builds this is labeled Apps & features.
- Find Xbox, select the three-dot menu, and choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair. Windows checks the app package without intentionally clearing its stored app data.
- When the button finishes, launch Xbox and check whether the original symptom changed.
Use Reset only after Repair fails
Select Reset in the same Advanced options page if Repair made no difference. Reset clears the app’s local data and returns its settings to an initial state. You may need to sign in again and allow the app to rebuild its local library information. It does not remove your Microsoft account or cancel a subscription, but it can discard locally stored app preferences and state.
Write down any account, library, or installation details you need before selecting Reset. The action is designed to clear the app’s local state, not to remove installed games, but the app may need to rediscover them and reauthenticate afterward. If the Advanced options page has no Repair or Reset button, skip to the Store reinstall path rather than using an unrelated command.

Reinstall from Microsoft Store
- Uninstall Xbox from Settings > Apps > Installed apps if the uninstall option is available.
- Open Microsoft Store and use Library to locate Xbox, or search for the official Xbox app listing.
- Select Install and wait for the Store transaction to complete before launching it.
- Sign in with the account that owns the game or subscription, then test the app with a known-installed title.
Microsoft’s general procedure for Store apps covers repair, reset, and reinstall at Fix problems with apps from Microsoft Store. That page does not claim these actions solve every Xbox launch failure, so retain the exact error if reinstalling changes nothing.
When the Xbox library is blank or a game is unavailable
An empty library can be an account or eligibility issue rather than a launch defect. Check these conditions before repeatedly reinstalling:
- Account: Confirm that Xbox and Microsoft Store are signed in to the intended Microsoft account. A different account can make owned games or subscriptions appear to be missing.
- Region: Microsoft says app and title availability can vary by region. A listing absent in one region is not evidence that the app is malfunctioning.
- Family settings: Family restrictions can hide or block an app or game.
- Device compatibility: Windows edition, hardware requirements, and device authorization can determine whether an item is offered for installation.
- Pending restart: Finish Windows or Store updates and restart before judging an installation failure.
- Store state: If Store pages, updates, or downloads also fail, run
wsreset.exeand update the Store before changing Xbox data.
Capture the exact title, account, and message. Microsoft’s guidance for apps that cannot be found or installed is the appropriate reference for availability and authorization checks.
If the library is blank but the Store and another Store app work, compare the account shown in each app before changing Windows settings. If only one game is affected, test another installed title; a successful second launch narrows the issue to the original game or its entitlement rather than the Xbox shell itself.

Handle Gaming Services errors by Windows version and code
Gaming Services messages are not interchangeable. The Microsoft knowledge-base article KB5004327 was published in June 2021 for Windows 10 and the specific errors 0x80073D26 and 0x8007139F when Gaming Services is installed or started.

Windows 10 with 0x80073D26 or 0x8007139F
For that exact combination, Microsoft identifies installing update KB5004476 as the resolution. Check Windows Update and install the update applicable to the affected Windows 10 build, then restart as requested.
The KB5004327 workaround
The same article documents a fallback that removes the Gaming Services app package and related service registry entries, restarts Windows, and reinstalls Gaming Services. It requires an administrator account, elevated PowerShell, and changes to service-related registry data. Because it removes installed components and uses elevated privileges, follow the current Microsoft instructions on the KB page exactly, verify that your Windows version and error match its scope, and keep a recovery path available. It is not a routine first step for an Xbox app that merely spins or refuses to open.
Before attempting that workaround, copy the displayed code exactly and confirm that the machine is running Windows 10, not merely an Xbox app on a newer Windows build. A similar-looking Gaming Services prompt can have a different cause. If Windows Update offers the documented resolution, prefer that supported update over manual removal.
Other Gaming Services messages
For a different error code, a current Windows build, or a message that does not match KB5004327, do not copy commands from an unrelated forum answer. The available Microsoft material does not establish one universal command sequence for every Gaming Services failure. Use Xbox or Microsoft Support instructions that correspond to the precise code and version, and preserve the message for escalation.
Use a clean boot only as a diagnostic test
If Windows, Store, cache, repair, reset, and reinstall steps leave the same launch failure, a non-Microsoft startup program or service may be interfering. A clean boot starts Windows with nonessential startup items and services disabled so you can test that hypothesis.
- Follow Microsoft’s current clean-boot procedure for your Windows version and note the settings you change.
- Restart with non-Microsoft startup items and services temporarily disabled.
- Try the Xbox app and, if it opens, a game that previously failed.
- If the symptom disappears, re-enable disabled items in groups and restart between tests until the conflicting program or service is isolated.
- Restore normal startup settings when testing is complete.
A clean boot does not identify the culprit by itself; it only makes a background conflict more plausible if Xbox works in that state. The recommendation comes from a Microsoft Q&A discussion, not from a universal Xbox troubleshooting article. The thread includes moderator advice dated June 5, 2026 and an AI-generated answer dated June 4, 2026 that Microsoft labels as potentially incorrect, so treat the procedure as isolation rather than a guaranteed cure: view the Microsoft Q&A thread.
Do not leave startup items disabled after testing unless you deliberately want that configuration. If Xbox works only in a clean boot, restore normal startup and then re-enable a small group at a time. The first group that brings the failure back identifies where to investigate; it does not prove that every item in that group is responsible.
