The quickest documented repair is to stop the DayZ server, clear every entry from workshop.mods in the hosting panel, save the configuration, reinstall all installed Workshop content, and start the server again. The error usually means the launcher received an invalid or empty mod list; in some cases a mod contains publishedid = 0 in its meta.cpp metadata.
What “Workshop has an ID of 0” means
DayZ launchers use Steam Workshop metadata to identify the mods a server requires. A normal Workshop item has a published identifier that the launcher can read. An ID of 0 is a failure value, not a useful Workshop item ID.

GTXGaming describes the message as meaning that a mod is not being properly loaded by the DayZ launchers. The open-source Pterohost implementation documents a lower-level cause: some Workshop authors ship publishedid = 0 in meta.cpp, the metadata file inside a mod. If the server advertises that value, a launcher can reject the server or receive an empty required-mod list.
The same symptom can also come from a stale or malformed server mod list. Therefore, an ID of 0 does not by itself prove that the entire server installation is damaged or that one specific author is at fault. Start with the server-side reset, then use logs and controlled testing to identify a remaining conflict.

Do the first-line repair in this order
This procedure is the documented first response for the error. Panel names differ between hosts, but the relevant settings are normally in the server configuration editor and Steam Workshop management area.
- Stop the DayZ server. Do not edit the active mod list while the server process is running. A running process can overwrite the configuration or leave files locked.
- Open the hosting panel’s configuration editor. Locate the
workshop.modssetting. This is the server’s Workshop mod-list entry, not a client-only launcher option. - Remove every mod from the command line. Delete the complete contents of the mod list, then save the configuration and exit the editor. Do not leave a suspected item behind during this reset; the purpose is to remove stale and malformed entries together.
- Open Steam Workshop management for the server installation. Select the installed content view and run Reinstall All. This repopulates the local Workshop files rather than merely reusing the existing copies.
- Start the server. Wait for startup to finish, then query the server with the DayZ launcher or the launcher you normally use. Confirm whether the required-mod list is now populated and whether the ID-0 message has disappeared.
Clearing workshop.mods and reinstalling installed Workshop content removes a bad list entry and refreshes the files that the server advertises. It is a first-line repair, not a guarantee against a genuine mod conflict or invalid metadata supplied by an author.

Why removing the list and reinstalling helps
The server has two related but separate pieces of information: the configuration that tells it which mods to load, and the Workshop files and metadata available on disk. A stale configuration can continue advertising an item that no longer exists at the expected location. Conversely, a damaged or incomplete Workshop installation can leave the configuration pointing at content whose metadata cannot be read.
The reset addresses both sides in a controlled sequence. Removing the list prevents the server from starting with the old set of entries. Reinstalling all installed Workshop content gives the server a fresh local copy before you build a new list. Starting with an empty list also makes the next test meaningful: if the launcher responds normally, a later failure can be tied to a mod you add rather than to the original stale state.

If the error comes back after the reset
Check whether one item or the whole list is affected
Run the launcher or server query immediately after the reinstall and record exactly what it reports. If all required mods are missing, suspect the server configuration, Workshop installation, or startup process. If one item alone is shown with ID 0, concentrate on that Workshop item’s files and metadata instead of repeatedly reinstalling unrelated mods.
Do not assume that a launcher display of zero identifies a valid item called “0.” It is normally a signal that the launcher could not obtain a usable published ID.

After the clean start, add only a few required mods to workshop.mods, save, restart, and query the server. Continue in small groups. When the error returns, remove or divide the most recently added group and test again. This binary-style isolation is faster and produces clearer evidence than restoring a large list all at once.
Keep a written record of the order in which each group was added. The record lets you reproduce the failure and prevents a known-bad entry from being accidentally reintroduced while you troubleshoot another one.

Put dependencies before the mods that require them
GTXGaming warns that mod conflicts and required load order can cause the problem to recur. If a mod depends on a framework, library, map, or other package, place the dependency first in the server’s list, followed by the mod that uses it. Apply one ordering change at a time and restart before making another change.
A correct order cannot repair a Workshop item whose published metadata is invalid, but an incorrect order can create a separate startup failure that looks similar from the launcher. Treat ordering and metadata as two different checks.

Read the server’s startup logs
Inspect the host’s Web Console, server_console, and script_log after each controlled restart. Look at the first warning or error associated with a mod, not only the final launcher message. The logs may identify a missing dependency, an item that failed to mount, an incompatible script, or the exact Workshop entry that was rejected.
Save the relevant lines, including the mod name and the time of the restart. A log excerpt without the surrounding startup context can hide the first failure and leave you chasing a later consequence.

Check updates and compatibility after a DayZ update
GTXGaming advises updating the server and its Workshop mods after a DayZ update, then checking each mod’s Workshop page for compatibility information. A game update can expose an old mod, change a dependency requirement, or make an otherwise valid load order fail.
Update the server and the affected Workshop content consistently rather than mixing an updated server with an intentionally old copy of one dependency. If a mod author specifies a required version or dependency on the Workshop page, follow that information when rebuilding the list.
When the problem is inside a mod’s metadata
Pterohost’s implementation documentation notes that some authors ship publishedid = 0 in meta.cpp; it describes zero as the placeholder written before an item has an ID. If one Workshop item continues to report zero after the server list has been cleared and the content reinstalled, the defect may be in that item’s published metadata rather than in your host configuration.
Use the isolation process to establish that pattern: test the server without the item, confirm that other mods produce normal IDs, then add the item by itself or with only its dependencies. Do not delete unrelated working mods or repeatedly rebuild the entire server once the evidence points to a single package.

Community reports describe republishing or updating the mod as a possible author-side correction. Those reports are anecdotal, so treat republishing as something the author may need to do, not as a guaranteed administrator fix. A server operator can report the exact item, the ID-0 message, and the relevant log lines to the author; the author must correct and publish valid metadata if the package itself is defective.
A practical isolation workflow
Use this sequence when the clean reinstall did not resolve the message:
- Stop the server and verify that the current
workshop.modslist is saved somewhere safe before changing it. - Remove all entries again, save, and start with no optional mods. Query the server to establish a clean baseline.
- Add the required dependency or framework group first. Restart and inspect the Web Console,
server_console, andscript_log. - Add the next small group, restart, and query the launcher. Record whether IDs and the required-mod list are normal.
- When the error returns, split the last group and test each half. Continue until one item or dependency relationship is isolated.
- Test the suspected item without unrelated content. If it alone produces ID 0 after a reinstall, document the result for the mod author or host support.
- Once the list works, add the remaining items in dependency order and keep a copy of the known-good configuration.
This method separates configuration problems from content problems. It also limits downtime because each restart tests a small, understandable change.
Common mistakes that prolong the error
- Editing while the server is running: stop the process first so the panel can save the intended configuration.
- Removing only the item that appears as zero: the first-line repair calls for clearing the complete
workshop.modslist before reinstalling installed content. - Reinstalling without clearing the list: fresh files cannot correct a stale command-line entry that is still being advertised.
- Restoring every mod at once: a large restoration hides which item or dependency reintroduced the failure.
- Ignoring load order: dependencies must precede the mods that require them.
- Reading only the launcher text: the Web Console,
server_console, andscript_logcan reveal the first rejected item or dependency. - Assuming every recurrence is a host fault: a mod can contain
publishedid = 0in its own metadata. - Mixing update states: after a DayZ update, verify the server, each Workshop mod, and the compatibility notes together.
Choosing a hosting workflow for easier recovery
The error can be investigated on a self-hosted machine or through managed DayZ server hosting. The important difference is not a particular provider; it is whether the workflow gives you direct access to the controls and evidence needed for this repair.

What to send support or a mod author
A precise report shortens the handoff. Include the DayZ server version, the time of the failed restart, the exact Workshop item name and ID shown by the launcher, the order of entries in workshop.mods, and the relevant lines from Web Console, server_console, and script_log. State whether you stopped the server, cleared the full list, ran Reinstall All, and tested the item alone.
That information distinguishes a stale server list from a dependency conflict and from an item that publishes publishedid = 0. Avoid sending only a screenshot of the launcher message; it does not show which stage failed.
